Katedra Azji Południowej Wydział Orientalistyczny UW uprzejmie informuje, że 23 maja 2013, godz. 15.00, sala St. Schayera WO UW Prof. Monika Boehm-­‐Tettelbach (Heidelberg) wygłosi wykład Sants, Yogis, Sufis: Literary and religious intersections in early modern Rajasthan Abstract The impact of Haṭhayoga and Sufism on the Sants has been abundantly demonstrated, a nd aspects of the issue have a lso b een d ebated in light of current concerns, especially those of communalism. For this, the a lmost emblematic figure remains Kabīr. Talking of the Sants, we usually focus on poets, that is, on literary evidence. Are we, however, also in a position to trace how actual b ehaviour and critical d iscourse were impacted? And can we point to the ways in which the traditions negotiated one another’s positions? The talk will focus on testimonies for such negotiation amongst the three traditions. For this, eastern Rajasthan, which is continuous with Marwar to the west and Haryana and Panjab to the north, will s erve as the cultural laboratory, so to say. This regional approach is considered helpful for breaking down evidence of vast temporal and geographical expanse and complexity to precise, more manageable and specific configurations. The anchor of the talk will be the Dādūpanth, a once powerful and variegated Sant group that from the 17th century produced a spate of literature and had or has retained settlements in the region where the traditions reviewed engaged with one another. Examining particular places, actors and clusters implicating the three traditions, it will b e illustrated how the Sants responded to the hathayogic and Sufi traditions and how the impact was more often than not mutual. Whereas the time-­‐frame of the talk is the early modern p eriod, certain lines of d evelopment can b e pursued into the present. Serdecznie zapraszamy wszystkich zainteresowanych!
