TVN24’s force is growing
The most opinion-shaping daily in October was Rzeczpospolita, radio station – RMF FM and
television station – TVN24, shows the latest “Poland’s top opinion-shaping media”, a study by
the Institute of Media Monitoring. The top fifteen includes three television stations, two opinion
weeklies and one Internet portal.
Like in the previous month, on the first position in October was Rzeczpospolita, which was cited 1173 times.
Second ranked was Dziennik, its score being 905 quotations. Lowest on the podium was Gazeta Wyborcza,
whose publications were referred to 825 times.
The most frequently cited publication in October was “Poles want new elections”, delivered by Wprost.

Score of Polska is the total of references to all the regional variations of the daily: Polska Dziennik Bałtycki, Polska Dziennik Łódzki,
Polska Dziennik Zachodni, Polska Gazeta Krakowska, Polska Gazeta Wrocławska, Polska Głos Wielkopolski, Polska Kurier Lubelski.
Just behind the podium was TVN24, quoted 688 times. The number of references to the station’s materials
nearly doubled which makes the channel rapidly getting closer to the press, long-standing absolute leaders. What
won TVN24 such a good result were interviews with politicians and experts, often cited by other media. Besides
TV24 there are two television stations classified: TVN (199 quotations, 11th position) and TVP Info (128
quotations, 13th position). In October RMF FM successfully defended its radio segment leader. It was cited 325
times (5th position), most often in the context of the Polish politics, popular opinion polls and economy, market
and finance news. That gave it advantage over Radio ZET (285 quotations, 7th position). Behind the two radio
stations, that is eighth and ninth ranked were weeklies of opinion: Wprost (275 quotations) and Newsweek (255
quotations). The only portal listed Onet.pl found itself on the 10th place, having been cited 218 times. It is worth
underlining Onet’s large advantage over other portals. Its runner-up – Interia.pl was referred to only 54 times.
An interesting thing is that there are only two weeklies of opinion on the October list. Higher in the rankings was
Wprost. It was quoted 275 times, nearly twice as many times as in the month before. The score of Newsweek
was similar – 255. Although the number of references to this weekly slightly increased as well, Newsweek did
not manage to keep the leading position in the opinion weekly segment. Polityka was not included in the top
fifteen titles this month.
In the classification there were two business and economy dailies. What deserves special attention is Gazeta
Prawna (180 citations, 12th position) again boosting its advantage over Puls Biznesu (127 citations, 14th
position). October was another month in a row that saw no tabloids among the leading fifteen. The last in the
rankings was Nasz Dziennik (109 citations). The daily, which had not been classified for quite a while, came
back owing to revelations on PKO illegally transferring PLN 2 billion from Poland, a piece of news frequently
quoted by other media.

Some of the key issues in October were: controversy around the Polish Football Association (PZPN), the
problem of financial crisis reaching Poland and possible preventive means, the conflict between the President
and the Prime Minister about Poland’s representation on the EU summit. The media also covered new findings
about the death of priest Popiełuszko, controversy around privatisation of Polish shipyards, preparations for Euro
2012, abduction of a Polish engineer in Pakistan, Poland’s entry to the euro area, details on planned exhumation
of general Sikorski and suspicions of collaboration of well-known scientist A. Wolszczan’s with PRL’s Security
Service (SB).
For the purpose of the present report the Institute of Media Monitoring analysed 8017 media pieces (press
clippings, radio and television broadcasts) within the period of 1-31 September. Reporters quoted news of other
media 8142 times (5290 times in the press, 1754 – on the television and 1098 – on the radio). The study covers
only the pieces which are not of the press review type.
Every month the Institute of Media Monitoring analyses all press publications, as well as television and radio
broadcasts, the authors of which refer to reports of other media outlets. There are nearly 900 press titles and
selected television and radio stations examined.
