Abstracts Tomasz Michta OD PRZESZŁOŚCI KU PRZYSZŁOŚCI. ZARYS HISTORII I DZIAŁALNOŚCI KOŁA NAUKOWEGO BAJT Abstract: Established in 2003 and based in the Department of Languages for Special Purposes at the University of Warsaw, the BAJT Student Research Group is concerned with many facets of LSP research. The article summarizes the history of BAJT from the moment of its birth until the present day, offers a brief description of the main research projects conducted by the group, and suggests prospects for future developments. Special attention is given to the creation of the Experimental Terminological Database, which has served as the basis for the compilation of terminological dictionaries included in “Debiuty Naukowe” (“Research Debuts”), a book series published by BAJT. Liliana Religa, Weronika Szemińska TŁUMACZE W ROZTERKACH Abstract: In February 2007, in an attempt at realising their passion for literature, a group of students at the Department of Languages for Special Purposes founded a study group for literary translations. Under the auspices of Krzysztof Fordoński — an English philologist and translator of literature — the study group holds meetings in the form of lectures and practical workshops concerning translation of poetry, prose, and films. The aim is to translate various texts from and into four languages: English, German, Polish and Russian, thus learning diverse translation techniques, methods of interpretation, and editing. The study group has also organised a student conference (in co-operation with the “BAJT” research group) as well as two poetry translation contests. Iwona Drabik JĘZYK JAKO FUNDAMENT INTELEKTUALNEJ DZIAŁALNOŚCI CZŁOWIEKA Abstract: Prior to any discussion on translational strategies, it must first be reiterated what words such as „language‟ and „cognition‟ refer to in general, and how the interrelations between linguistic abilities and mental processes are defined. The idea of linguistic relativity and the theory of cognitive determinism are confronted. Subsequently, the Language of Thought hypothesis and its translational implications are reported. Human concepts are represented in a mentalese allowing complex thoughts to be built up by combining simpler ones in various ways. The article presents conclusions drawn from several in-depth analyses regarding the manner in which the inborn linguistic potential may be expanded within the human cognitive development. Further investigation concentrates on the possibilities of exteriorizing scientific thinking in the form of scientific texts, using adequate discursive techniques. Translator as a linguistic intermediary is to select one of the following predetermined techniques: (1) code switching, (2) paraphrasing, (3) adaptation or (4) condensation. The last one is applicable chiefly to academic texts and consists in constructing a thesaurus of terms. Jan Łompieś PRZEDSIĘBIORCA JAKO HOMO COMMUNICANS W ŚWIECIE BIZNESU Abstract: The article discusses certain aspects of business communication and communication acts performed by businesses and entrepreneurs in the course of their business activity. To a considerable extent, each entrepreneur and business manager acts as homo communicans who communicates not only with his external partners but also with employees within the company. To this end, the entrepreneur uses one or more technolects in addition to his ethnolect, not to mention his communicative and specialist competence. Moreover, the entrepreneur‟s competence to interpret market signals and messages from the outside environment considerably contributes to the success or failure in his business undertaking. The author suggests classifying the communication acts in business on the basis of typologies developed in the research literature. The classification includes almost all types of communication acts in business. In the short term, most of these acts aim to ensure the smooth functioning of the company, while in the long term every business‟s aim is to gain profits. Marek Łukasik IDEALNY – OPTYMALNY – MAKSYMALNY SŁOWNIK TERMINOLOGICZNY Abstract: The paper discusses specific issues arising at various stages of specialized dictionary-making. Derived from the principles of terminographical work and the outcomes of both general and detailed terminographical analysis, the notions of the ideal, optimal and maximal terminological dictionary are elucidated. They give rise to a discussion on specialized dictionary parameters that would best reflect theoretical requirements, needs of dictionary users, and the nature of specialized knowledge encoded in term-carrying texts. Mariusz Mela O METAFORZE TECHNOLEKTALNEJ NA PRZYKŁADZIE NIEMIECKIEGO JĘZYKA GOSPODARKI Abstract: The article is concerned with the issue of metaphors in both general and specialised texts. The author quotes various theories regarding the metaphor and provides examples from German economic press. Another aim of the article is to elucidate the intention of authors using metaphors in economic texts and to show its complexity and diversity. Wioletta Mela WYBRANE ZAGADNIENIA KONSTRUOWANIA WIELOJĘZYCZNEGO TEZAURUSA Z DZIEDZINY UBEZPIECZEŃ Abstract: The paper deals with some issues connected with the construction of a multilingual thesaurus of insurance terminology. The considerations presented in the work are based on a thesaurus titled "RussianPolish-English Thesaurus of Car Insurance Terminology", compiled for the purpose of the author‟s MA thesis. First, the understanding of the word „thesaurus‟ over the centuries is briefly presented, thus constituting an introduction to the issues of three terminographical principles. The principles in question are then presented in the context of the terminological set under consideration. Limiting a terminological set of lexical units means distinguishing the conceptual base reflecting the structure of professional knowledge. The principle of interlingual harmonization of terminology consists in associating national lexicons with the primary terminological system, a step that constitutes an obligatory requirement for the development of professional knowledge. It is further stated that terminology systematization is, in the first place, achieved by means of the so-called „terminological square‟, a method for organizing terminology with the help of the thesaurus technique. Such phenomena as the degree of paradigmatic term completeness or polyhierarchy are also discussed. Tomasz Michta O SŁOWNIKU SYSTEMOWYM NA MATERIALE TERMINOLOGII CHEMICZNEJ Abstract: Providing an adequate representation of a concept system in a specialized dictionary remains a major challenge for terminographers. Based on a conceptual classification of terms, the systematic dictionary may prove a powerful tool for understanding the relations between the concepts. The paper explores the theoretical foundations for compiling systematic dictionaries of specialized terminology and discusses some practical issues in preparing a systematic dictionary of chemistry. Weronika Szemińska TERMINOLOGICZNY SŁOWNIK PRZEKŁADOWY: W POSZUKIWANIU NARZĘDZIA DOSKONAŁEGO Abstract: The aim of the article is to propose a characterisation of the translation dictionary, including its place in the typology of lexicographic works, particularly in opposition to the ordinary bilingual dictionary. Among the features considered are the structure of the dictionary, the technique of its construction, the types of equivalents offered, as well as the manner of representing specialised knowledge by means of the dictionary‟s design. The proposed description is to become a basis for the construction of models of specific lexicographic works.
