MESSAGE OF HIS HOLINESS POPE BENEDICT XVI FOR LENT 2012 "We Must Not Remain Silent Before Evil" "Let us be concerned for each other, to stir a response in love and good works" (Heb 10:24) Dear Brothers and Sisters, he Lenten season offers us once again an opportunity to reflect upon the very heart of Christian life: charity. This is a favourable time to renew our journey of faith, both as individuals and as a community, with the help of the word of God and the sacraments. This journey is one marked by prayer and sharing, silence and fasting, in anticipation of the joy of Easter. T This year I would like to propose a few thoughts in the light of a brief biblical passage drawn from the Letter to the Hebrews: "Let us be concerned for each other, to stir a response in love and good works". These words are part of a passage in which the sacred author exhorts us to trust in Jesus Christ as the High Priest who has won us forgive‐
ness and opened up a pathway to God. Embracing Christ bears fruit in a life structured by the three theological vir‐
tues: it means approaching the Lord "sincere in heart and filled with faith" (v. 22), keeping firm "in the hope we profess" (v. 23) and ever mindful of living a life of "love and good works" (v. 24) together with our brothers and sisters. The author states that to sustain this life shaped by the Gospel it is important to participate in the liturgy and community prayer, mindful of the eschatological goal of full communion in God (v. 25). Here I would like to reflect on verse 24, which offers a succinct, valuable and ever timely teaching on the three aspects of Christian life: concern for others, reciprocity and personal holiness. 1. "Let us be concerned for each other": responsibility towards our brothers and sisters. This first aspect is an invitation to be "concerned": the Greek verb used here is katanoein, which means to scruti‐
nize, to be attentive, to observe carefully and take stock of something. We come across this word in the Gospel when Jesus invites the disciples to "think of" the ravens that, without striving, are at the centre of the solicitous and caring Divine Providence (cf. Lk 12:24), and to "observe" the plank in our own eye before looking at the splinter in that of our brother (cf. Lk 6:41). In another verse of the Letter to the Hebrews, we find the encouragement to "turn your minds to Jesus" (3:1), the Apostle and High Priest of our faith. So the verb which introduces our exhorta‐
tion tells us to look at others, first of all at Jesus, to be concerned for one another, and not to remain isolated and indifferent to the fate of our brothers and sisters. All too often, however, our attitude is just the opposite: an indif‐
ference and disinterest born of selfishness and masked as a respect for "privacy". Today too, the Lord’s voice sum‐
mons all of us to be concerned for one another. Even today God asks us to be "guardians" of our brothers and sis‐
ters (Gen 4:9), to establish relationships based on mutual consideration and attentiveness to the well‐being, the integral well‐being of others. The great commandment of love for one another demands that we acknowledge our responsibility towards those who, like ourselves, are creatures and children of God. Being brothers and sisters in humanity and, in many cases, also in the faith, should help us to recognize in others a true alter ego, infinitely loved by the Lord. If we cultivate this way of seeing others as our brothers and sisters, solidarity, justice, mercy and compassion will naturally well up in our hearts. The Servant of God Pope Paul VI stated that the world today is suf‐
fering above all from a lack of brotherhood: "Human society is sorely ill. The cause is not so much the depletion of natural resources, nor their monopolistic control by a privileged few; it is rather the weakening of brotherly ties between individuals and nations" (Populorum Progressio, 66). He has planned an itinerary that will take full advantage of the IEC program as well as giving participants a variety of wonderful sightseeing opportunities. Tour participants will visit the Cliffs of Moher in County Clare and the Shrine at Knock in County Mayo before arriving in Dublin for the IEC opening ceremonies on June 10. The tour includes admission to each day of the Conference, including the closing ceremonies at Croke Park on June 17. There will also be sightseeing activities during the week, including a day trip to Belfast in Northern Ireland. March 3‐4, 2012 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, After decades of oppressive communistic rule, the Church in Central and Eastern Europe is challenged to provide the residents of this region the essential pas‐
toral and human needs which are taken for granted by many throughout the world. As an example, in the Republic of Azerbaijan Mother Teresa of Calcutta’s Sisters of Charity operate a home‐
less shelter which furnishes food, medical care and transitional housing to those in need. Additionally, the sisters visit the poor and elderly who are unable to travel, thus bringing the light of Christ to those living in the darkness of poverty, illness and loneliness. The Collection for the Church in Central and Eastern Europe not only funds shelters and medical dispensa‐
ries but enables the formation of religious and lay min‐
isters in order to foster the faith of future generations. On behalf of these ministers of the Gospel and those in need throughout Central and Eastern Europe, thank you for your generous support of this collection. May Our Lord continue to bless you and your loved ones as we strive to live with a deep sense of solidarity for the needs of others within our parishes, our Arch‐

Orędzie Ojca Świętego Benedykta XVI na Wielki Post 2012 r. «Troszczmy się o siebie wzajemnie, by się zachęcać do miłości i do dobrych uczynków» (Hbr 10, 24) Bracia i siostry! ielki Post ponownie daje nam sposobność do refleksji nad tym, co stanowi centrum życia chrześcijańskiego – miłością. Jest to bowiem odpowiedni czas, abyśmy z pomocą Słowa Bożego i sakramentów odnowili naszą drogę wiary, zarówno osobistą, jak i wspólnotową. Jest to droga pod znakiem modlitwy i dzielenia się, milczenia i postu, w oczeki‐
waniu na radość paschalną. W tym roku chciałbym przedstawić parę myśli w świetle krótkiego tekstu biblijnego, zaczerpniętego z Listu do Hebrajczyków: «Troszczmy się o siebie wzajemnie, by się zachęcać do miłości i do dobrych uczynków» (10, 24). To zdanie występuje w perykopie, w której natchniony pisarz zachęca do pokładania ufności w Jezusie Chrystusie jako Najwyższym Kapłanie, który wyjednał nam przebaczenie i dostęp do Boga. Owocem przyjęcia Chrystusa jest życie według trzech cnót teologalnych: należy przystępować do Pana «z sercem prawym, z wiarą pełną» (w. 22), by trwać niewzruszenie w nadziei, którą wyznajemy (por. 23), troszcząc się nieustannie wraz z braćmi o «miłość i dobre uc‐
zynki» (por. 24). Mówi się też, że dla umocnienia tej ewangelicznej postawy ważne jest, by uczestniczyć w spot‐
kaniach liturgicznych i modlitewnych wspólnoty, mając na względzie cel eschatologiczny: pełną jedność w Bogu (por. w. 25). Skupię się na wersecie 24, który w paru słowach przekazuje cenną i zawsze aktualną naukę na temat trzech aspektów życia chrześcijańskiego; są nimi troska o bliźniego, wzajemność i osobista świętość. 1. «Troszczmy się» – odpowiedzialność za brata Pierwszym elementem jest wezwanie do tego, by «się troszczyć» – występuje tu grecki czasownik katanoein, który oznacza: uważnie obserwować, być uważnym, przyglądać się w sposób świadomy, dostrzegać pewną rzeczywistość. Spotykamy go w Ewangelii, kiedy Jezus mówi uczniom, by «przypatrzyli się» ptakom na niebie, które Boża Opatrzność otacza gorliwą troską, choć się nie trudzą (por. Łk 12, 24), i zachęca, by «dostrzec», że mamy belkę we własnym oku, zanim zobaczymy drzazgę w oku brata (por. Łk 6, 41). Znajdujemy go również w innym fragmencie Listu do Hebrajczyków, jako zachętę, by «zwrócić uwagę na Jezusa» (por. 3, 1), Apostoła i Arcykapłana naszego wyznania. A zatem czasownik rozpoczynający wezwanie, o którym mówimy, zachęca, by patrzeć na drugiego człowieka, przede wszystkim na Jezusa, i by troszczyć się o siebie nawzajem, by nie okazywać dystansu, obojętności wobec losu braci. Tymczasem często dominuje postawa przeciwna: obojętność, brak zainteresowania, które rodzą się z egoizmu, mas‐
kowanego przez pozorne poszanowanie «sfery prywatnej». Także dzisiaj z mocą rozbrzmiewa głos Pana, który wzywa każdego z nas do troszczenia się o bliźniego. Także dzisiaj Bóg nas prosi, abyśmy byli «stróżami» naszych braci (por. Rdz 4, 9), abyśmy tworzyli relacje nacechowane wzajemną troskliwością, zabieganiem o dobro drugiego i o jego pełne dobro. Wielkie przykazanie miłości bliźniego nakazuje i apeluje, by mieć świadomość, że jest się odpowiedzialnym za tego, kto tak jak ja jest stworzeniem i dzieckiem Bożym: fakt, że jesteśmy braćmi w człowieczeństwie, a często także w wierze, winien nas skłaniać do dostrzegania w bliźnim prawdziwego alter ego, nieskończenie umiłowanego przez Pana. Jeżeli zaprawiamy się w tym braterskim patrzeniu, wówczas solidarność, sprawiedliwość, a także miłosierdzie i współczucie w naturalny sposób rodzą się w naszym sercu. Sługa Boży Paweł VI twierdził, że współczesny świat cierpi przede wszystkim z powodu braku braterstwa: «Ludzkość jest ciężko chora. Przyczyną tej choroby jest nie tylko zmniejszenie się zasobów naturalnych i ich chciwe zgromadzenie przez niewielu, ile raczej rozkład braterskiej więzi zarówno między ludźmi, jak i między narodami» (enc. ON SYMPTOMS OF DAZZLING (EXPANDED) Copyright 2012 by John B. Reynolds ([email protected]) As a food technologist, I subscribe to something called Food‐
Track, an on‐line information service advising of global food safety issues in real time. I receive several FoodTrack email alerts at work each day, and since most of them have nothing to do with my auspices of the food safety world, I just delete them. Sometimes, though, I learn of things that have direct impact on my company’s business and these I investigate‐‐and act upon‐‐as necessary. And occasionally, I read things that simply catch my fancy, like the Chinese press release that inspired a presentation I gave at a south side parish last October and that I referenced‐‐
but without detail‐‐in a subsequent column. Now, the detail… “Kunming, 6/14/2011 (Xinhua News Agency): Sodium nitrites were blamed in the food poisoning of seventy‐four stu‐
dents and four teachers in a middle school in southwest China’s Yunnan Province, local authorities said Tuesday. The symptoms of dazzling and vomiting were discovered early Monday among the students and teachers...” Symptoms of dazzling? I immedi‐
ately emailed a guy who worked for me at the time‐‐Jason, a Purdue food science grad‐‐to see if he knew what this meant. It was clear that Jason and I were thinking similarly when he emailed in return saying no but adding, “Almost sounds like they should be taking more sodium nitrites.” Exactly! Through an Internet search, I found reference to the term in a 1920s‐something University of Pennsylvania medical journal with the researcher referring to “dazzling” as the bright, flashing lights some people complain of seeing, even with their eyes closed. I’ve since asked several friends and colleagues if they’d ever heard of the term in this context and I haven’t had a single taker. Most people seem to understand dazzling as I do‐‐
and as Jason did last summer‐‐and it’s the understanding prom‐
ulgated by the World English Dictionary’s online definition: “extremely clever, attractive, or impressive; brilliant; amazing.” By all means, pass the sodium nitrite! The WED has one more dazzling definition, though (“so bright as to blind someone temporarily”), and it’s the definition that comes to mind as I consider the transfiguration story in to‐
day’s Gospel. Here, Peter, James, and John go up the mountain with Jesus where he’s transfigured “and his clothes became daz‐
zling white…” Today we see Jesus in all of his Godly glory, afford‐
ing his disciples some eternal insight, perhaps, after hearing him speak just a few days prior of his upcoming passion and death. Christ’s transfiguration is our very own, of course, but first we must go to the cross with him. In one way or another, it’s what we’ve all signed up for, and Lent keeps this in front of us. Or should. We all show symptoms of dazzling on our best days‐‐on our most Christ‐like days‐‐and yet Jesus himself promises us that our dazzlingest days are still ahead of us. As Peter says on the mountain, “Rabbi, it is good that we are here.” Yea. Hold the nitrite. Pass the Lenten resolve. St. Ferdinand Parish

BAPTISM:
For Children: a pre-Baptism class is required for Baptism of the first
child. Classes are held in English on the first Wednesday of each
month at 7:30PM in the Church, and in Polish on the last Tuesday of
each month at 7:30PM in the Church. Following registration, the
sacrament of Baptism is celebrated in English on the second Saturday
each month at 6:00PM and on the fourth Sunday of the month at the
12:30PM Mass. The sacrament of Baptism is celebrated in Polish on
the first Saturday of the month at 6:00PM and on the third Sunday of
the month at the 3:00PM Mass. Please call the rectory to register at

For Adults: Classes are taught through the Rite of Christian Initiation
