This workshop looks at how European societies instrumentalize the remembrance of a
‘better‘ pre-dictatorial past in post-dictatorial situations and asks for regional and European
patterns of fitting periods of dictatorship into master narratives of national history. South
European case studies are Spain, Portugal, and Greece where right-wing dictatorships
ended in the mid-1970s, East European cases are Bulgaria, Romania, Ukraine, Latvia and
Poland where communist regimes collapsed in 1989-91. In addition to intra-regional
comparisons attempts at inter-regional ones will be undertaken.
The workshop is the closing conference of the Leipzig-based research project „National
Self-Assertion in Post-Dictatorial Societies on the Semi-Peripheries of Europe: Historical
Cultures in Poland and Spain Compared“, financed by VolkswagenFoundation from 2002
to 2006. Discussed at the workshop will be the draft of a follow-up project “Historicizing
Dictatorship: Coming to Terms with the Recent Past in Southern and Eastern Europe“
taking Portugal, Greece, Latvia and Ukraine as case studies.
Celem warsztatów jest porównanie sposobów, w jakie europejskie społeczeństwa byłych
dyktatur przetwarzają pamięć „lepszych” czasów oraz poszukiwanie regionalnych i
ogólnoeuropejskich prób włączenia okresów dyktatur w wielkie narracje historii
narodowych. Studia szczegółowe dotyczą Europy Południowej: Hiszpanii, Portugalii i
Grecji, w których prawicowe dyktatury trwały do połowy lat 70-tych, oraz Europy
Wschodniej: Bułgarii, Rumunii, Ukrainy, Łotwy i Polski, gdzie reżimy komunistyczne
załamały się w latach 1989-91. Przypadki te będą porównywane zarówno w skali
regionalnej, jak i ponadregionalnej.
Warsztaty zamykają prace nad projektem badawczym „Rozpracowywanie dyktatorskiej
przeszłości i utwierdzanie się co do własnej tożsamości grupowej na obrzeżach Europy:
kultura historyczna w Polsce i w Hiszpanii w perspektywie porównawczej”, finansowanym
przez Fundację Volkswagena a realizowanym w Lipsku w latach 2002-2006. Podczas
warsztatów zostanie poddany dyskusji kolejny projekt: „Uhistorycznienie dyktatury:
oswajanie historii najnowszej w Południowej i Wschodniej Europie”, operujący case
studies Portugalii, Grecji, Łotwy i Ukrainy.
