R.C.I.A
On Sunday, Feb. 26th, as a parish community, we will send
our catechumen and candidates to Bishop DiMarzio where he
will acknowledge their journeys of faith and welcome them into
the Rite of Election. At the 9AM Spanish Mass, we will pray
for 6 candidates (Jennifer Aguirre-Martinez, Eduardo Cunyarachi, Andrea Katherine Galeano-Andrade, Maria Esmeralda
Osorio, Andres Tellez, and Eliazar Torres). At the 10:45AM
Mass, we will pray for our catechumen (Dorie Jackson) and two
candidates (Donna Brace and Wendy Roman). All of them will
complete their initiation into the Catholic faith at the celebration of the Easter Vigil on April 7th.

DAILY SCRIPTUAL REFLECTIOS I A BOOKLET
“ FIVE MIUTES WITH THE WORD”
“Five Minutes with the Word” is a daily meditation based on
the Mass readings for each day of Lent. Take it with you on the
subway or bus or put it by the bedside.
COCERT OF “LAST SEVE WORDS OF CHRIST O
THE CROSS” BY JOSEPH HAYD.
Concert preformed by a Slavic Arts Ensemble will take
place on Sunday, March 4th in the lower church at 5:00PM.
LETE COI HOLDERS
Lenten coin holders are available in the vestibule of the
church. You may want to use this as a means of “almsgiving”
which is one of the practices we focus on during Lent. If possible, we ask that you change coins into bills when you return the
holder.
LETE RETREAT I THE IGATIA TRADITIO
Mr. Robert Giugliano, Ph.D., Spiritual Director at Mt. Manresa Retreat House on Staten Island, will be with us during Lent
to lead us in prayer as we prepare for the celebration of the
Easter Triduum. The retreat will begin this week and continue
for the five weeks of Lent. A weekly meeting of one hour and a
half will be conducted on Tuesday mornings after the 9:00AM
Mass, and Thursday evenings from 7:30PM to 9:00PM. You
may choose the day that is most convenient for you.
BREAD & SOUP MEAL
A simple meal of soup & bread is a wonderful way to nourish your hunger with a scaled-down meal. It reminds us that
God is the One for whom we ultimately hunger and thirst.
Moreover, the meal gives us an opportunity to meet new
friends in our parish family. When & Where? Two Saturdays
of Lent, March 17th & 24th following the 5:00PM Eucharist
and two Sundays of Lent, March 18th & 25th at 2:00PM in St.
Joseph House. Entrance to the Center is from Newkirk Ave and
from the lower church. You are asked for an offering of $7 to
cover the cost.
FILM “QUO VADIS”
Showing will take place on Sunday, March 11th, at 4:00PM
in the theatre of St. Joseph’s Center.
REPET AD BELIEVE I THE GOSPEL
TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITIO
Lent is the time of year we devote to scrutinizing our
lives in the light of our baptism into the death and
resurrection of Jesus. Today’s readings are a nice
shorthand catechism of what our baptized lives mean. As
Noah passed through the waters of the flood to a covenant
with God, so did we enter into a covenant, a promised
relationship with God through our baptism.
Peter’s letter gives an explicit explanation of what our
baptism means: it is an appeal we make to God for a clear
conscience. How do we obtain this clear conscience? The
words proclaimed by Jesus immediately following his
temptation show us the way: “Repent, and believe in the
gospel” (Mark 1:15). It might be a good spiritual exercise
to keep these readings before us throughout the entire
season of Lent, a means to help us return to a life lived by
our baptismal promises.
By the First Sunday of Lent, many people have given
up on “giving up.” Yet experiencing hunger for favorite
things is a sign of a desire to face our deepest hungers.
We do not embrace fasting as individuals, but rather as
the community’s way of life in this season. Sometimes it
helps to see Sunday as an oasis in the Lenten desert, a
place where fasting is not as strictly observed. If we count
the days of the Lenten calendar, starting backward from
the end of Lent on Holy Thursday, it is difficult to
measure the forty days. Many are surprised to learn that
the Sundays are counted as part of Lent, but are not
counted in tallying the forty days of the Lenten fast. For
that, we count the fast backward into last week, beginning
on Ash Wednesday. So, until today we have been in the
Lenten fast, days that function as a kind of overture to a
symphony of conversion.
Today Lent solemnly begins, marked in many places
by the sending of catechumens and candidates to the
bishop for the call to the Easter sacraments. Tomorrow
with them, we embrace the Lenten fast again. Today we
are exactly forty days from the opening of the Paschal
Triduum on Holy Thursday.

fuerza.
