DAILY SCRIPTUAL REFLECTIONS IN A BOOKLET
“ FIVE MINUTES WITH THE WORD”
“Five Minutes with the Word” is a daily meditation based
on the Mass readings for each day of Lent. Take it with you
on the subway or bus or put it by the bedside. It will be
available in both English & Spanish.
BREAD & SOUP MEAL
A simple meal of soup & bread is a wonderful way to
nourish your hunger with a scaled-down meal. It reminds us
that God is the One for whom we ultimately hunger and
thirst. Moreover, the meal gives us an opportunity to meet
new friends in our parish family. When & Where?
Saturday, March 22nd at 6:00PM following the evening
Eucharist, and Sunday, March 30th at 2:00PM - all served in
the parish Center. Entrance to the Center is from Newkirk
Ave and from the lower church. You are asked for an offering of $5-7 to cover the cost.
STRENGTH AGAINST TEMPTATION
TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
The first Sunday of the season of Lent always includes
a Gospel account of the temptation of the Lord Jesus in
the desert by the devil. This year, the story is set against
the backdrop of the first reading from Genesis, which
recounts the very first temptation by the devil. That story
is set in a garden of delight. The Gospel story is set in the
desert. As believers, we know that temptation comes our
way in our own gardens of delight as well as the deserts
of our lives. As Lent begins, our attention is drawn to that
temptation within each of us to become like God - we
want control, power, and answers to all of life’s difficult
questions. As communities of faith, we are given this
season of repentance so that we can join our hearts with
others on the difficult journey of conversion. We look to
God and to one another for strength against temptation.
Today, we know more about the beginnings of Lent
than our ancestors did. We know that Lent is first of all
about baptism, and secondly that it is about the desire of
all the baptized to renew the power and potential of that
sacrament at Easter. For centuries, this deep truth was
largely obscured, but today documents have come to light
to reshape the Church’s thinking and practice.
One source, discovered in the 1880s, is the pilgrim
diary of a Spanish nun, Egeria, writing her sisters a
detailed travelogue of a fourth-century sojourn in
Jerusalem during Holy Week. She describes in vivid
detail her participation in liturgies that are close cousins
of our own Holy Week prayer, from a festive procession
with palms to a procession to the cross. Her greatest
delight is in the huge number of elect: men, women, and
children who experience a time of deep retreat and
identification with Christ’s cross, guided by the bishop
and supported by their godparents’ constant nurture. The
discovery of Egeria’s diary proved to be a moment of
grace for the Church; after a long period of “ecclesial
amnesia,” we know at last that baptism is really the work
of a whole community of faith, convened by God.

1 NIEDZIELA WIELKIEGO POSTU
Duch wyprowadził Jezusa na pustynię, aby był
kuszony przez diabła. A gdy przepościł czterdzieści
dni i czterdzieści nocy, odczuł w końcu głód. Wtedy
przystąpił kusiciel i rzekł do Niego: Jeśli jesteś
Synem Bożym, powiedz, żeby te kamienie stały się
chlebem . Lecz on mu odparł: Napisane jest: Nie
samym chlebem żyje człowiek, lecz każdym słowem,
które pochodzi z ust Bożych. Wtedy wziął Go diabeł
do Miasta Świętego, postawił na narożniku
świątyni i rzekł Mu: Jeśli jesteś Synem Bożym, rzuć
Jeszcze raz
wziął Go diabeł na bardzo wysoką górę, pokazał
Mu wszystkie królestwa świata oraz ich przepych i
rzekł do Niego: Dam Ci to wszystko, jeśli upadniesz
i oddasz mi pokłon. Na to odrzekł mu Jezus: Idź
precz, szatanie! Jest bowiem napisane: Panu, Bogu
swemu, będziesz oddawał pokłon i Jemu samemu
służyć będziesz. Wtedy opuścił Go diabeł, a oto
aniołowie przystąpili i usługiwali Mu.
Mateusz 4, 1-11
Chrystus kuszony na pustyni robi coś dokładnie
przeciwnego niż Adam kuszony w raju. Odpowiedź
na diabelską intrygę jest w posłuszeństwie: „Bogu
samemu będziesz służył”. Dlaczego mam być Bogu
posłuszny? To pytanie jest zrodzone z lęku. Można
więc zapytać inaczej: Dlaczego mam być posłuszny
lekarzowi, który mi przepisuje terapię, lektorowi
angielskiego,
który
uczy
wymowy,
posłuszeństwem a miłością. o. Tomasz Kwiecien OP,
