Every Wednesday, all of us have the opportunity to worship our Lord Jesus Christ in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament that is exposed
on our altar from 8:30AM to 7PM. One of the
benefits of Eucharistic adoration is that you
determine how to spend your time with Jesus.
You can just sit in the presence of our Lord,
pray your rosary, read your Bible, or do some other spiritual
reading.
If you wish to request a mass for a deceased member or a blessing or to ask for
the health of a loved one or friend, you may
do so at the rectory. We are open Monday—Thursday from 9 AM to 5 PM and on
Friday from 10:30 to 6:30 PM. A SMALL
DONATION OF $10 PER INTENTION IS REQUIRED.

Luke 2:16-21
The shepherds find Jesus in a manger
in Bethlehem.
Background on the Gospel Reading
Today's reading is a continuation
from the Gospel proclaimed at the Christmas Mass at midnight. In it the shepherds act upon the message they receive
from the angel and go to find Jesus in the manger in Bethlehem. In their visit to the manger, the shepherds find things
just as the angel had said. The shepherds' visit, therefore, is a
moment of fulfillment, manifestation, and the beginning of
the salvation we receive through Christ.
In the context of today's Solemnity, this reading
also helps us focus on Mary as the Mother of God. The reading tells us at least three things about Mary as a mother.
First, Mary is described as a reflective person, keeping the
reports of the shepherds in her heart. Second, we are reminded of how obedient Mary was to God when she named the
baby Jesus as the angel Gabriel had directed. Third, this
reading shows Mary and Joseph faithfully observing their
Jewish tradition by having Jesus circumcised.
Mary's faithfulness to God is evident in all three of
these things. Her reflection upon the events in her life indicates that she was a person of prayer. This prayer made possible her obedience to God and God's will, even if the outcome was not clear. Finally, her faithfulness to a community
of faith grounded her relationship with God and enabled her
to participate in God's plan of salvation.
Because of Mary's faithfulness to God, she was able
to receive the gift of God's Son and accept her role in God's
plan for salvation. By doing so, she models for us the path of
discipleship and is also called Mother of the Church.
Our call to discipleship also includes these three
aspects. First, discipleship means prayer and reflection on
the events of our lives that we might see God's presence and
work in our lives. Second, discipleship means obedience to
God and God's will. Third, discipleship includes fidelity to a
community of faith.
This American saint was born in
Bohemia in 1811. He was looking
forward to being ordained in 1835
when the bishop decided there
would be no more ordinations. It is
difficult for us to imagine now, but
Bohemia was overstocked with
priests. John wrote to bishops all
over Europe but the story was the
same everywhere no one wanted
any more priests. John was sure he
was called to be a priest but all the
doors to follow that vocation seemed to close in his face.
But John didn't give up. He had learned English by
working in a factory with English-speaking workers so he wrote
to the bishops in America. Finally, the bishop in New York
agreed to ordain him. In order to follow God's call to the priesthood John would have to leave his home forever and travel
across the ocean to a new and rugged land.

In New York, John was one of 36 priests for 200,000
Catholics. John's parish in western New York stretched from
Lake Ontario to Pennsylvania. His church had no steeple or
floor but that didn't matter because John spent most of his time
traveling from village to village, climbing mountains to visit
the sick, staying in garrets and taverns to teach, and celebrating
the Mass at kitchen tables.
Because of the work and the isolation of his parish,
John longed for community and so joined the Redemptorists, a
congregation of priests and brothers dedicated to helping the
poor and most abandoned.
John was appointed bishop of Philadelphia in 1852.
As bishop, he was the first to organize a diocesan Catholic
school system. A founder of Catholic education in this country,
he increased the number of Catholic schools in his diocese
from two to 100.
John never lost his love and concern for the people -something that may have bothered the elite of Philadelphia. On
one visit to a rural parish, the parish priest picked him up in a
manure wagon. Seated on a plank stretched over the wagon's
contents, John joked, "Have you ever seen such an entourage
for a bishop!"
The ability to learn languages that had brought him to
America led him to learn Spanish, French, Italian, and Dutch so
he could hear confessions in at least six languages. When Irish
immigration started, he learned Gaelic so well that one Irish
woman remarked, "Isn't it grand that we have an Irish bishop!"
Once on a visit to Germany, he came back to the
house he was staying in soaked by rain. When his host suggested he change his shoes, John remarked, "The only way I could
change my shoes is by putting the left one on the right foot and
the right one on the left foot. This is the only pair I own."
John died on January 5, 1860 at the age of 48.

En aquel tiempo, los pastores
fueron a toda prisa hacia Belén y
encontraron a María, a José y al
niño, recostado en el pesebre.
Después de verlo, contaron lo
que se les había dicho de aquel
niño, y cuantos los oían quedaban
maravillados. María, por su parte,
guardaba todas estas cosas y las meditaba en su corazón.
Los pastores se volvieron a sus campos, alabando y
glorificando a Dios por todo cuanto habían visto y oído, según
lo que se les había anunciado.
Cumplidos los ocho días, circuncidaron al niño y le
pusieron el nombre de Jesús, aquel mismo que había dicho el
ángel, antes de que el niño fuera concebido.
El primer día del año...para María, Madre de Dios
Hoy celebramos una fiesta que hace referencia al título más
sorprendente que puede tener una criatura humana: Madre
Dios... Lo cual significa que el Salvador del mundo no sólo
nació "en" ella, sino "de" ella. El Hijo formado de sus entrañas
es el mismísimo Hijo Dios, nacido en la carne.
El Evangelio nos narra los acontecimientos de la Navidad, remarcando la imposición del nombre, dado por el ángel
antes de la Concepción: JESÚS (que significa YHWH [nombre
sagrado e inefable de Dios en el A.T.] salva); nombre puesto
por orden divina... misterioso, cargado de significado salvífico
[con todo y por todo lo que significa el "nombre" para los semitas] (ver a este respecto lo que dice el Catecismo de la Iglesia
Católica al explicar el II mandamiento...).
La invocación de ese nombre trae la salvación. Nosotros tenemos el nombre del Señor sobre nosotros: somos cristianos... ¡No lo digamos con tanta ligereza!
Así, se abre el año con esa fórmula que pide la bendición y el favor de Dios. Él nunca se la ha negado la humanidad;
pero con Cristo esta Bendición es irrevocable.
Comienza el año civil; y se lo celebra de diversos modos:
1. En estas fiestas, se suele hacer mucho ruido (bailes, fuegos
artificiales, pirotecnia,...) mucho ruido ¿Y "pocas nueces"...?
2. Para muchos, las fiestas están cargadas de melancolía (paso
de los años; "los que ya se han ido"; nostalgias; recuerdos...).
Muchos desean "que las fiestas pasen pronto"...
3. Para los pobres (que no son pocos), el dolor de no poder participar de las alegrías festivas... o de hacerlo con muchas limitaciones.
Pensemos cómo vivimos interiormente las fiestas. Sin interioridad, todo lo otro es vacío, pura exterioridad e hipocresía: festejamos... nada.
¿Cuál es el motivo para alegramos por las fiestas? El Amor de
Dios, experimentado en estos días como una fuerza que quiere
renovarnos incesantemente. Navidad es el comienzo de una
nueva creación (Dios a hecho con el hombre una Alianza Eterna: Cristo).
Todo comienzo de algo (también el del año civil) debe
remitirnos a este comienzo: al de la Alianza Nueva y Eterna...
(la que no pasará jamás, y por ende radicalmente diversa de lo
que no permanece, lo que es pasajero, transitorio (tiempo; apariencias; exterioridades)... Éste es el fundamento de nuestra

Paz, cuya Jornada mundial cada año celebramos precisamente
hoy.
Volvamos a mirar las cosas que nos rodean, pero con
esta perspectiva: pensemos en las cosas que se fueron con el
año y los años que pasaron... y pongámoslas en manos Dios.
Pero sepamos que todo lo que hayamos hecho con amor, y por
amor tiene un valor que permanece, y está "eternizado" en la
presencia del Señor.
Todo lo hecho por amor, aunque pequeño, aunque los
demás no lo noten, ha sido tomado en cuenta por Dios, y lo
encontraremos renovado en Él.
También las personas que se han ido... Y así, nuestros lazos de
amor, lejos de perderse, serán renovados y glorificados en la
Resurrección.
"Nada se pierde, todo se transforma..." también en el orden espiritual.
Frente al año viejo, y al nuevo, tengamos una mirada
de Fe: evaluemos desde el amor que hemos puesto y hemos de
poner para hacer las cosas.
El tiempo pasa, pero el amor permanece; y allí debemos encontrar el motivo de nuestra alegría: en el amor vivido y en el "por
vivir".
"En el atardecer de la vida e juzgará el Amor”, nos recuerda
San Juan de la Cruz.
Un nuevo año ha "atardecido"...
Un año más de vida... y un año menos para llegar al cielo.
Un año con sus alegrías... y sus amarguras.
En vista a los acontecimientos de la vida de cada uno de ustedes, quiero hoy recordarles nuevamente que con todos sus engaños, trampas y sueños rotos, éste sigue siendo mundo hermoso, que vale la pena vivir como camino al cielo.
En este valle de lágrimas, la alegría que da el Espíritu
Santo es más fuerte que cualquier pena... Esa alegría profunda,
serena, misteriosa, radiante... (quien la conoce, entiende lo que
estoy diciendo... y a quien no la conoce, le repito con el salmo
33: "prueben y vean qué bueno es el Señor...").
Pongamos hoy nuevamente nuestra vida en manos de
María Santísima. Ella pondrá el año que termina en manos del
Padre Misericordioso, y la en el que comienza en manos del
Hijo Providente... ella que es Soberana de los Ángeles, pero
mucho más aún es nuestra: sangre y dolor de nuestra raza humana.
Amén.

Uroczystość Świętej Bożej Rodzicielki Maryi
Pasterze pośpiesznie udali się do Betlejem i znaleźli
Maryję, Józefa i Niemowlę, leżące w żłobie. Gdy Je
ujrzeli, opowiedzieli o tym, co im zostało objawione
o tym Dziecięciu. A wszyscy, którzy to słyszeli,
dziwili się temu, co im pasterze opowiadali. Lecz
Maryja zachowywała wszystkie te sprawy i
rozważała je w swoim sercu. A pasterze wrócili,
wielbiąc i wysławiając Boga za wszystko, co słyszeli
i widzieli, jak im to było powiedziane. Gdy nadszedł
dzień ósmy i należało obrzezać Dziecię, nadano Mu
imię Jezus, którym Je nazwał anioł, zanim się
poczęło w łonie [Matki].

Święta Boża Rodzicielka Maryja
1 stycznia
Pierwszy dzień Nowego Roku to ósmy dzień
od Narodzenia Jezusa. Według prawa żydowskiego każdy chłopiec miał być tego dnia
obrzezany. W oktawę Bożego Narodzenia,
dziękując Bogu za przyjście na świat Chrystusa, Kościół obchodzi uroczystość ku czci
Matki Bożej, przez którą spełniły się obietnice dane całej ludzkości, związane z tajemnicą
Odkupienia. Tego dnia z wszystkich przymiotów Maryi czcimy
szczególnie Jej Macierzyństwo. Dziękujemy Jej także za to, że
swą macierzyńską opieką otacza cały Lud Boży.
Poświęcenie Maryi pierwszego dnia rozpoczynającego się roku
ma także inne znaczenie. Matka Jezusa zostaje ukazana ludziom
jako najdoskonalsze stworzenie, a zarazem jako pierwsza z tych,
którzy skorzystali z darów Chrystusa. Pragnienie wyakcentowania specjalnego wspomnienia Matki Bożej zrodziło się już w starożytności chrześcijańskiej. Kościół zachodni już w VII wieku
wyznaczył w tym celu dzień 1 stycznia.
Uroczystość Świętej Bożej Rodzicielki Maryi to najstarsze maryjne święto. Podkreśla ono wagę Jej macierzyństwa. Wprowadził je
do liturgii Kościoła papież Pius XI w roku 1931 na pamiątkę
1500. rocznicy soboru w Efezie (431). Pius XI wyznaczył na coroczną pamiątkę tego święta dzień 11 października. Reforma liturgiczna w roku 1969 nie zniosła tego święta, ale podniosła je do
rangi uroczystości nakazanych i przeniosła na 1 stycznia. Wybrano bardzo stosowny, nie przypadkowy dzień: oktawy Bożego
Narodzenia, aby po wyśpiewaniu hymnów dziękczynnych Wcielonemu Słowu, złożyć odpowiedni hołd Jego świętej Rodzicielce.
Maryja niewątpliwie jest osobą najbliższą Jezusowi ze względu
na szczególną rolę w dziele zbawienia. Jej niezwykłe posłannictwo i miejsce w chrześcijaństwie odsłania tekst Apokalipsy. Kościół od początku wierzył, że Jezus zachował ciało Maryi od skażenia śmiercią. Zabrał Ją z ciałem i duszą do nieba, koronując Ją
na Królową nieba i ziemi.
Macierzyństwo Maryi wobec Jezusa jest wyjątkowe, ponieważ
jest dziewicze. Maryja była Dziewicą zawsze: przed porodzeniem
Jezusa i po Jego urodzeniu, aż do śmierci. Kościół nie ustanowił
osobnego święta dla podkreślenia tego tytułu. Łączy go jednak
bezpośrednio z Boskim Macierzyństwem. Prawdę o dziewiczym
Macierzyństwie ogłosił jako dogmat na Soborze Laterańskim I w
roku 649. Jednak wiarę w tę prawdę Kościół wyraził również na
soborach poprzednich, np. w Chalcedonie (451) i w Konstantynopolu (553). Nadto prawdę tę akcentuje w wyznaniach wiary, w
orzeczeniach papieży, w pismach Ojców Kościoła i w liturgii.

Św. Jan Neumann, Redemptorysta - 5 stycznia
Biskup Filadelfii, Pennsylvania, USA, urodził się 28 marca 1811
roku, w Prachatyczach, Bohemia, jako syn Filipa Neumann i
Inés Lebis. Uczęszczał do szkoły w Budziejowicach i wstąpił do
tamtejszego seminarium w roku 1831. Jest pierwszym kapłanem, który wstąpił do Zgromadzenia w Ameryce. Śluby zakonne
składa Baltimore w roku 1842. Od samego początku jego zakonni współbracia bardzo go cenią za jego świętość, zapał apostolski i miły sposób bycia. Znajomość 6 współczesnych języków sprawia, że jest w sposób szczególny przygotowany do
pracy w wielojęzycznej społeczności amerykańskiej XIX wieku.
Pracuje w Baltimore i w Pitzburgu. W roku 1847 zostaje mianowany wizytatorem, czyli wyższym przełożonym Redemptorystów w Stanach Zjednoczonych. Ojciec Neumann został mianowany biskupem Filadelfii i konsekrowano go w Baltimore 28
marca 1852 roku. Diecezja jego jest olbrzymia i przechodzi
okres żywego rozwoju. Pierwszą rzeczą, której dokonał jako
biskup, było zorganizowanie diecezjalnej sieci szkół katolickich.
Był twórcą katolickiej formacji w swoim kraju, powiększył do stu
w swojej diecezji liczbę szkół katolickich. Oprócz licznych artykułów jakie pisał do katolickich czasopism, opublikował także
dwa katechizmy, a w roku 1849 - historię Biblii do użytku szkolnego. Do samego końca pozostawał aktywny. Dnia 5 stycznia
1860 roku, w wieku 48 lat, zakończył życie na jednej z ulic swego miasta biskupiego, zanim zdołano mu udzielić ostatnich Sakramentów. Beatyfikował go Papież Paweł VI 13 października
1963 roku, on też kanonizował go 27 czerwca roku 1977.
