ASCENSION THURSDAY
This coming Thursday, May 9th
2013, the Roman Catholic Church celebrates a Solemnity of the Ascension of
Our Lord. It is part of our belief that
Christ after His resurrection has ascended into heaven from where He shall
come again on the last day to judge the
living and the dead. The Ascension
Thursday is a holy day of obligation.

THE WORKINGS OF THE SPIRIT
TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
Anyone who has seen a loved one off to a new
adventure knows how difficult it is to rejoice, even when
we are reasonably optimistic about their future. So, we
can imagine how difficult it must have been for the
disciples to rejoice in Jesus’ announced departure.
Today’s Gospel is part of Jesus’ Last Supper discourse,
recorded only by John. Jesus announces shocking news.
He must go to the Father, and they should rejoice in this.
To help them through this, Jesus gives his disciples his
give of peace and promises an Advocate.
From our privileged position in history, we can see
that all that Jesus promises comes to pass. The Church has
grown and still exists on this earth because of the abiding
Spirit. But living by the Spirit and entering into the peace
of Christ is no small task. Jesus doesn’t promise the
apostles a rose garden. He is realistic about the costs of
discipleship. And, mercifully, he is also clear about its
rewards.
Frequent fliers today have many ways to accrue air
miles, so one doesn’t always have to endure long hours in
cramped seats to earn free hours in cramped seats. In St.
Paul’s day, there were no such perks, nor would there
have been any legal system for him to protest the
shipwrecks he endured. He had other rewards in mind.
The churches that he established in the catalogue of cities
from today’s first reading must have been very different
from one another. Language, culture, customs, religious
history, obstacles to community, social challenges, the
places where they met, their clothing, their bread and
wine, all distinct, particular to the area.
There were social customs as well: in a Christian
household, the only place where a slave would be able to
stand legally as an equal with the master would be at the
table of the Lord, because at that table a new world of
reconciliation was imaged. While Paul revered local
customs, he was relentless about challenging the ways
that people lived their Christian lives and how their
worship reflected them. It is much the same today, as a
global Catholic Church seeks to respect local customs and
culture, allowing for differences in many things, yet
always giving expression to the underlying presence of
Christ, who binds us all together into his body.

SZÓSTA NIEDZELA WIELKANOCNA
Uniósł mnie anioł w zachwyceniu na górę wielką i
wyniosłą, i ukazał mi Miasto Święte - Jeruzalem,
zstępujące z nieba od Boga, mające chwałę Boga. źródło
jego światła podobne do kamienia drogocennego, jakby
do jaspisu o przejrzystości kryształu: Miało ono mur
wielki a wysoki, miało dwanaście bram, a na bramach dwunastu aniołów i wypisane imiona, które są imionami
dwunastu pokoleń synów Izraela. Od wschodu trzy bramy
i od północy trzy bramy, i od południa trzy bramy, i od
zachodu trzy bramy. A mur Miasta ma dwanaście warstw
fundamentu, a na nich dwanaście imion dwunastu
Apostołów Baranka. A świątyni w nim nie dojrzałem: bo
jego świątynią jest Pan, Bóg wszechmogący oraz
Baranek. I Miastu nie trzeba słońca ni księżyca, by mu
świeciły, bo chwała Boga je oświetliła, a jego lampą –
Baranek. Apokalipsa 21:10-14.22-23
Niech Bóg się zmiłuje nad nami i nam błogosławi,
niech nam ukaże pogodne oblicze.

Jezus powiedział do swoich uczniów: Jeśli Mnie kto
miłuje, będzie zachowywał moją naukę, a Ojciec mój
umiłuje go, i przyjdziemy do niego, i będziemy u niego
przebywać. Kto Mnie nie miłuje, ten nie zachowuje słów
moich. A nauka, którą słyszycie, nie jest moja, ale Tego,
który Mnie posłał, Ojca. To wam powiedziałem
przebywając wśród was. A Pocieszyciel, Duch Święty,
którego Ojciec pośle w moim imieniu, On was
wszystkiego nauczy i przypomni wam wszystko, co Ja
wam powiedziałem. Pokój zostawiam wam, pokój mój
daję wam. Nie tak jak daje świat, Ja wam daję. Niech się
nie trwoży serce wasze ani się lęka. Słyszeliście, że wam
powiedziałem: Odchodzę i przyjdę znów do was.

REFLEKSJA NA TEMAT CZYTAŃ...
Zmartwychwstały
Jezus wstępuje do Ojca i posyła Kościołowi Ducha
Świętego. To misterium jest treścią całego Okresu
Wielkanocnego. Duch Święty nieustannie aktualizuje
tajemnicę Paschy Jezusa Chrystusa, czyli Jego
odkupieńczej śmierci i zmartwychwstania. Kościół
prowadzony przez Ducha Świętego oczekuje na powrót
Chrystusa i objawienie się niebieskiego Jeruzalem,
w którym każdy z nas ma przygotowane dla siebie

Primera lectura - La cuestión de si los gentiles

LA OBRA DEL ESPÍRITU
Cualquiera que haya visto partir a un ser amado hacia
una nueva aventura sabe que es difícil alegrarse, aun
cuando nos sintamos razonablemente optimistas sobre su
futuro. De modo que podemos imaginar lo difícil que
debió ser para los discípulos alegrarse cuando Jesús les
anunció su partida. El Evangelio de hoy es parte del
discurso durante la Última Cena y sólo Juan lo relata.
Jesús hace un anuncio perturbador. Debe ir al Padre y
ellos deben alegrarse. Para ayudarlos, Jesús les da su paz
y les promete un Abogado o Paráclito.
Desde nuestra privilegiada posición en la historia,
podemos ver que todo lo que Jesús promete, pasa. La
Iglesia ha crecido y aún existe en este mundo gracias a la
presencia del Espíritu. Pero vivir por el Espíritu y entrar
en la paz de Cristo no es tarea fácil. Jesús no les promete
a sus apóstoles un jardín de rosas. Él es realista sobre el
costo de ser un discípulo. Y, misericordiosamente,
también describe con gran claridad sus premios.

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE
Tristemente una vez que muchos latinoamericanos
llegan a los Estados Unidos es difícil regresar a sus tierras
de origen, ni siquiera para visitar. Por esta razón, muchos
pueblos latinoamericanos han construido santuarios a sus
vírgenes y santos patrones en tierra estadounidense. De
esta manera buscan estar cerca al suelo que les trajo a luz,
que les nutrió con frutas, verduras, flores, cantos,
costumbres y tradiciones.
En Miami el pueblo cubano ha construido una ermita
dedicada a la Virgen de la Caridad del Cobre, cuya capilla
del Santísimo fue bendecida en la fiesta de la Ascensión
del Señor. Debajo de su altar principal se guarda una
piedra hecha con tierra de las distintas provincias de
Cuba. Es bello el hecho, porque de esta manera todo
cubano que se acerca al altar del Señor puede estar cerca
de su terruño aunque sea solo por un momento.
Que hay en la tierra que nos llama tanto a nosotros los
latinos. Será que el libro del Génesis tiene razón, Dios
forma toda persona del polvo y el corazón latino anhela la
tierra de la que fue sacado.
