FOURTH SUNDAY OF ADVENT
December 22, 2013
They shall name him Emmanuel, which means
“God is with us.”
~Matthew 1:23
EMMANUEL
To name someone or something means that we
have a relationship with that entity. Family names
indentify us with our heritage; nicknames denote
familarity or a special bond. In the Old Testament,
the meaning of a name ran deep. It identified one’s
mission, even one’s very being.
The amazing name „Emmanuel” was first uttered by Isaiah
as he described to the frightened King Ahaz the promised one
who would come to redeem the people. Emmanuel is not a
frightening philosophical name, such as Omnipotent,
Omniscient, Almighty. It does not connote distance and
transcendence. It does not generate reverential fear. The name
Emmanuel is the name given to the one who is coming. It
means „God is with us.” God is entrusted to the care of a
virgin, who will bear his child. Only God would be so
compassionate to draw so near, to be so available and
vulnerable. Only God could love this well.
POLISH EXCHANGE STUDENTS
Our nine visiting students from Poland safely returned home
last week after an emotional farewell with the new friends and
host families. They truly represented the high standards of their
private school in Warsaw and made a lasting impression on SJS
students.

Applause!! Applause!! To our talented students who participated in the School Christmas Pageant “And Heaven and Nature Sing! This presentation delighted and emanated the joy
and enthusiasm of our young thespians.
We are grateful to our play director, Svetlana Mozheiko, and
her assistant, Aleksandra Gronek, Choreographers, Lidia Nolle
& Dorota Kucala, Donald Cushing, Richard Skrocki, the faculty, Robert Wojcik, Sylwia Kohut, Ewa Mamro, Wieslaw Pieniazek, Eugene Rudnicki and all who helped with many tasks
such as--with costumes, scenery, lighting, etc.

CHRISTMAS VIGIL (WIGILIA)
Tuesday, Dec. 24th is the Vigil of Christmas. Traditional
rituals, symbols of the family Christmas Eve Vigil began millenniums ago in Poland, Slovakia and Lithuania. This practice
continues wherever the blessed Oplatek, the Christmas Wafer
is shared. The custom seems to unite the past with the present.
Heaven with earth. An empty place at the table is in memory of
ancestors, departed loved ones or unexpected guests which is
based on Scripture that when you invite a stranger, you invite
Jesus.
May this Christmas Vigil meal unite your family in the spirit
of joy, love and peace.
CHRISTMAS SCHEDULE 2013
Christmas is the most celebration day of the year. We will begin
with the Vigil Mass at 4:00pm on Tuesday, December 24th. As
always, our Basilica choirs and our school children will enhance
the vigil liturgy. The bilingual celebration at midnight will begin
at 11:30pm with a Concert of Carols, followed by the candlelight
procession with the children going to the manger and the blessing
of the creche. Musicians who recorded our new Christmas CD will
accompany the choir.
Children are asked to arrive in the sacristy before 11:45pm to
receive the candles for the procession to the creche.
Christmas morning masses will begin at 8:15am, with Family
Mass at 9:30 for our children and religious ed. The last Mass at
11:00am with the Polish Children’s choir will be in Polish.
At this special and sacred time everyone is invited and urged to
come to church and participate in the Eucharist. We ask that you
arrange your social activities of the day so that every child will
have the opportunity to attend divine worship on Christmas Day.
The altar servers are requested to report for their scheduled Masses
20 minutes before the beginning of the Liturgy.
Our Basilica choirs accompanied by musical instruments spent
much time in preparing their unique presentations of Christmas
carols; the Altar Guild devoted their time and talent to provide
inspirational scenery to recall the first Christmas. Therefore, we
kindly ask you to invite your family members and friends to join us
to experience the traditional Christmas „aura” at our Basilica
CHRISTMAS MESSAGE
We are nearing the time when human hearts are filled with
joy and expectations-it’s called Christmas. Through this special
time families gather and exchange gifts, sing Christmas carols
and enjoy each others company.
God became one of us, trusted us so we would be assured of
his presence in our daily lives. Today with renewed joy we can
look at the newborn Baby Jesus who brings us peace and happiness. May this sacred day become a blessed time for all of us,
sharing the oplatek and life with one another and opening our
hearts to His blessings which he shares in abundance with people of good will. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

MOBSTER FOOD DRIVE
Thank you to all parents and children of St. Joseph School for
their overwhelming show of support for the 2013 WebsterDudley Mobster Food Drive. This group filled a box truck 3
times and filled the pantry to capacity. Also they collected over
$1K in cash donations and filled a 15 passenger van with toys
for Webster children this Christmas.
Special congratulations to the 5th graders who filled three
boxes of food and earned a Pizza party to be held in January.
All the children will enjoy an “out of uniform day” for their
efforts.

Przygotowujemy się na święto Narodzenia
naszego Pana, Jezusa Chrystusa, prawdziwego
człowieka
z ludzkim
rodowodem,
a jednocześnie prawdziwego Boga, który
powstając z martwych zwyciężył śmierć
i grzech. Jego posłannictwo wyraża imię „Emmanuel” –
„Bóg z nami”. Wiara w Boże wcielenie jest więc nie
tylko przyjęciem za pewnik określonej prawdy
teologicznej, lecz przekonaniem, że wszechmocny Bóg
na zawsze opowiedział się po naszej stronie i że także
dziś obdarza łaską i pokojem tych wszystkich, którzy Go

W ubiegłym tygodniu, po bardzo emocjonującym
pożegnaniu z rodzinami i nowymi przyjaciółmi, powrócili
do domów uczniowie ze Szkół Pijarskich. Dziewięcioro
odwiedzających nas dzieci dało prawdziwe świadectwo
standardów wychowania i edukacji w katolickich
szkołach w Polsce.
Bardzo dziękujemy wszystkim rodzinom, które przyjęły
pod swój dach gości z Polski: Steve i Sylvia Kohut,

CHRISTMAS SHOW
Brawo! Brawo! Dla naszych utalentowanych uczniów,
którzy wzięli udział w corocznym przedstawieniu
bożonarodzeniowym! Przedstawienie ukazało wiele
entuzjazmu i radości naszych młodych artystów.
Jesteśmy wdzięczni reżyserem przedstawienia: pani
Svetlana Mozheiko i jej asystentce pani Aleksandrze
Gronek, choreografom: pani Lidii Nolle oraz pani
Dorocie Kucala . Dziękujemy także za pomoc w realizacji
panu dyrektorowi Donald Cushing oraz panu Richard

którzy angażowali się wiele zadań, takich jak

WIGILIA BOŻEGO NARODZENIA
Już we wtorek, obchodzimy Wigilię Bożego
Narodzenia. Pierwsza gwiazdka na niebie, dzielenie
się opłatkiem i mnóstwo prezentów pod choinką to
tylko niektóre ze świątecznych tradycji. Nigdzie na
świecie Boże Narodzenie nie jest obchodzone tak
uroczyście, jak w Polsce i pośród Polaków. W
naszym sposobie obchodzenia Świąt mamy pod
dostatkiem tradycji wigilijnych.
Zanim zasiądziemy do wigilijnego stołu, szukamy
na niebie pierwszej gwiazdki. Jest ona symbolem
Gwiazdy Betlejemskiej i przypomina nam o
narodzinach Jezusa. Następnie przechodzimy do
wigilijnej wieczerzy, którą poprzedza dzielenie się
opłatkiem. Ten bardzo cienki niekwaszony chleb jest
symbolem miłości, dobra, pojednania oraz pokoju.
Dzieląc się opłatkiem łączymy się i składamy sobie
szczere życzenia. Opłatek, jako symbol darów od
Boga, ma przynieść domownikom szczęście.
Na wigilijnym stole powinno znaleźć się dwanaście
postnych potraw. Symbolizują one dwanaście
apostołów i dwanaście miesięcy w roku, a spożycie
każdej z nich przynieść ma pomyślność i dobrobyt na
kolejny rok.
Po kolacji wigilijnej obdarowujemy się prezentami.
Tradycja
wręczania
upominków
najbliższym
nawiązuje do historii biskupa diecezji Bari we
Włoszech. Jego hojność i troska o najbiedniejszych
jest do dziś symbolem miłości do bliźnich.
W wigilijny wieczór o północy wspólnie z całą
rodziną idziemy do Kościoła na Pasterkę, która jest
jedną z najważniejszych bożonarodzeniowych
tradycji w Polsce. Uroczysta Msza święta przypomina
o oczekiwaniu i modlitwie pasterzy w drodze do
Betlejem.
NOWA PŁYTA CD Z KOLĘDAMI
Z dumą prezentujemy nową płytę z kolędami
nagraną pod kierunkiem naszego organisty, Roberta
Wójcika z udziałem chóru naszej Bazyliki. Chórowi
towarzyszyło w czasie nagrania wielu utalentowanych
muzyków, co sprawia, że prezentowana płyta jest
wyjątkowa i przyjemna w odbiorze. Płyty będzie
można nabyć w cenie 10 dolarów za sztukę. Płyty CD
są dostępne na plebanii.
Przypomnienie: Kunszt naszego chóru będziemy
mogli podziwiać w czasie koncertu przed i w trakcie
Pasterki.
REFLEKSJA ŚWIĄTECZNA
Boże Narodzenie jest to czas, w którym tempo życia
troszkę zwalnia, przystaje, aby odpocząć. Wzrasta
jednak jego wartość i znaczenie. Każdy z nas, czasem
nawet mimo woli, zastanawia się nad tym, jaki był dla
innych, co zrobił dobrego, a co złego. Jak co roku
siadamy wspólnie z rodziną przy wigilijnym stole,
zapalamy lampki na choince, dzielimy się opłatkiem,
śpiewamy kolędy. To niezwykłe święta - święta Bożego
Narodzenia. Na pytanie dlaczego je obchodzimy,
większość z nas odpowiada: "Na pamiątkę narodzin
Jezusa Chrystusa, Syna Bożego". To nie tylko uczczenie
przyjścia Chrystusa na świat, ale także podsumowanie
naszego postępowania. W tym czasie my również
możemy narodzić się na nowo. Są jednak i tacy, którzy
traktują ten czas jako dzień wolny od pracy, długi
weekend.
Jednak, jak przeżyjemy ten okres i jakie uczucia on w
nas obudzi, zależy od nas, od naszej postawy i
przygotowania do świąt. W naszych domach
zostawiamy przy stole wolne miejsce dla gościa, który
zapuka do drzwi. A czy w naszych sercach będzie
miejsce dla Boga i drugiego człowieka?
DZIĘKUJEMY
Dziękuję bardzo za hojne wsparcie: czeki, karty
upominkowe i gotówkę, które otrzymaliśmy z okazji
“Felician Donation Day.” Dzięki Wam możemy

PROGRAM ŚWIĄTECZNY
Świętowanie Bożego Narodzenie rozpocznie się Mszą
Wigilijną o 16:00 we wtorek, 24 grudnia. Dwujęzyczna
Pasterka rozpocznie się o 23:30 z koncertem kolęd w
wykonaniu naszego Chóru, a następnie procesją przy
świecach z dziećmi do żłóbka i błogosławieństwem
żłobka.
