A PARISH GIFT FOR ALL: ADVENT SCRIPTURAL
REFLECTIONS
Last year our parishioners were offered a scripturally
based day-to-day reflections for Advent & Lent. Following a
favorable response from the members of our congregation,
we would like to once again provide a booklet entitled “Five
Minutes with the Word.” May the Advent reflections contained in the booklet above help us ponder the true, noncommercial meaning of Christmas.

Rite of Acceptance - a ritual of the RCIA process. We will

will complete their initiation into our faith through the
Sacraments of Eucharist and Confirmation, also at the Easter
Vigil. As a parish community, we promise our prayers and

We have purchased four new Roman Missals for the upper & lower churches to conform to the new translation of
the Mass that will begin on November 27th. A large version
of the missal will remain on the altar and a smaller one will

GOD HAS A DIFFERENT PLAN
We begin the season of Advent with a heartfelt call for
our own repentance. We remember God’s faithful love for
us, and call upon God to help us to turn back. For
“behold, you are angry, and we are sinful” (Isaiah 64:4).
In the first reading and in the psalm, we recall God’s
promises and lament our unfaithfulness and our guilt. We
call upon God’s might and power in order to save us.
With Isaiah, we ask God to “rend the heavens and come
down, / with the mountains quaking before you” (Isaiah
63:19).
Yes, God is faithful to us, because we are the work of
God’s hands. God is the potter, we are the clay. And yet,
our concept of how God will come to save us is rooted in
our own expectations of a warrior God who crushes
mountains and thunders into our lives with great noise
and glory. But God has a different plan: the Incarnation.

TODAY’S READINGS
First Reading - We are the clay and you, O Lord, are the
potter: we are the work of your hands
(Isaiah 63:16b -17, 19b; 64:2-7).
Psalm - Lord, make us turn to you; let us see your face
and we shall be saved (Psalm 80).
Second Reading - God is faithful; by God you were
called to fellowship with the Son (1 Corinthians 1:3-9).
Gospel - Be watchful! Be alert! You do not know when
the time will come. (Mark 13:33-37).
A MESSAGE FROM FR. LUKE
As you recall, every parish in our diocese has been
involved in a strategic planning process called Christ
Jesus Our Hope. It's purpose is to identify means and
resources by which challenges facing individual parishes
can be addressed. A letter from Bishop DiMarzio to our
parishioners was read at the Masses last weekend. I would
like to highlight an important message from that letter.
Bishop Nicolas DiMarzio writes: "A number of
challenges surfaced during both your parish's self-study
and the subsequent analysis done by the Diocesan
Planning Commission. The first is the need to create a
multi-year financial plan designed to maintain a balanced
budget for the parish. It is also necessary to identify and
address all remaining repairs and deferred maintenance
issues for the parish's buildings, to be completed over the
next three to five years. Finally, the parish must create as
quickly as possible both a Finance Council and Pastoral
Council, in accordance with the law of the Church and
the norms of this Diocese. The Commission unanimously
concluded that these issues can be effectively addressed
without the need for any reconfiguration of the parish."
TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
Advent calendars appear now in many homes, and new
- fangled formats are even available on line. Children
have fun opening the doors and windows keyed to the
days counting down to Christmas. Behind each door is a
picture related to the Christmas mystery, perhaps a
scripture verse or saying, but more and more these days
something totally unconnected to religious life, like a
small toy or a chocolate treat, appears instead. The
Advent calendar is not very old as traditions go. We can
trace it back to German-speaking Christians, both
Protestant and Catholic. Lutherans might have originated
the custom by placing chalk marks on doors starting
December 1, lighting candles every day, or placing a new
religious picture on the wall each day during Advent. The
oldest known hand-made calendar goes back to 1851, and
the first printed ones appeared in 1908 in Germany with
Bible verses behind the doors. By far the most interesting
calendar is a building, the town hall (Rathaus) of
Gengenbach in Germany’s Black Forest. Every year the
townspeople invite an illustrator of children’s books to
create twenty-four paintings or motifs for each of the
twenty-four main windows of the building. Every night
the people gather to see a new window opened and
illuminated.
Very few commercial Advent calendars pay much
attention to the core values of our liturgical calendar: the
pivotal place of Sunday, the importance of Advent feasts
like Saint Lucy and Saint Nicholas, and the clear shift in
tone on December 17 from Advent longing and
preparation toward imminent hope in Christ’s coming.
That kind of creativity is left up to you!

Czuwajcie więc, bo nie wiecie, kiedy pan domu
przyjdzie: z wieczora czy o północy, czy o pianiu
kogutów, czy rankiem. By niespodzianie przyszedłszy,
nie zastał was śpiących. Lecz co wam mówię, mówię
wszystkim: Czuwajcie.”

REFLEKSJA
Z
POCZĄTKIEM
NOWEGO
ROKU
LITURGICZNEGO... Nowy rok kościelny, liturgiczny
rozpoczyna się dokładnie od pierwszej niedzieli
Adwentu, a kończy na sobocie 34. tygodnia zwykłego.
Po drodze mamy w nim okazję przeżyć okres Bożego
Narodzenia, czas Wielkiego Postu i Wielkanocy i
najdłużej trwający, równie obfity w przeżycia - okres
zwykły. Już na pierwszy rzut oka widać, że choć rok
kalendarzowy ma tyle samo dni i tygodni, co rok
liturgiczny - to różnią się wieloma elementami (początek
roku liturgicznego przypada na koniec listopada lub
początek grudnia). Podstawową różnicą jest jakby
zupełnie inna filozofia: rok liturgiczny ma na celu głosić
chwałę Bożą i uświęcać wiernych. Stąd też cała historia
zbawienia, przekazana nam na kartach Biblii, wtłoczona
zostaje w ramy jednego roku, byśmy mogli stopniowo
odsłaniać całe Misterium Chrystusa: oczekiwanie,
zwiastowanie, nadejście, działalność, śmierć, powrót,
nowe życie. Co więcej: na kontemplację tych Bożych
tajemnic mamy nie jeden rok, ale tyle lat, ile Pan Bóg da
nam żyć. Bo każdy rok jest okazją, byśmy na te
wydarzenia spojrzeli inaczej, nieco dojrzalej. Co roku
jesteśmy w jakimś sensie inni - inaczej przeżywamy
Adwent czy Boże Narodzenie, mając lat 5, 18, 35 czy 80.
Nasz udział w roku liturgicznym porównuje się czasem
do spirali: kręcimy się w kółko - ale każdy dzień jest na
innym miejscu tego koła. Cała chrześcijańska mądrość
polega na tym, by ten ruch w koło postępował ciągle w
górę - jak w spirali, to znaczy: by przeżycia roku
liturgicznego z roku na rok były coraz głębsze, bardziej
zrozumiałe, wnoszące w nasze życie kolejne, nowe
wartości duchowe, dające nam szansę weryfikowania
naszego postępowania.

CELEBRACIONES PARROQUIAL EN DICIEMBRE
En Diciembre la comunidad hispana tendrá varias
celebraciones tales como:
1. A partir del sábado, 3 de Diciembre, tendremos eventos
religiosos como el rezo del santo rosario, rezo de la santa
novena y misa. Todo se realizará en la parte atrás de las iglesia
(St. Joseph House), comenzando a las 7:30PM. Cada noche
estará dedicada a orar por las familias que con anticipacion se
han registrado en nuestro calendario de actividades. Tambien
habrán sacerdotes para confesar los dias jueves y vienes.
DIOS TIENE OTRO PLAN
Comenzamos el tiempo de Adviento con un llamado
sincero al arrepentimiento. Recordamos el amor fiel que
Dios siente por nosotros y le pedimos que nos ayude a
emprender el camino de regreso: “estabas airado porque
nosotros pecábamos” (Isaías 64:4). En la primera lectura
y en el salmo, recordamos las promesas de Dios y
lamentamos nuestra rebeldía y nuestra culpa. Invocamos
el poder de Dios para salvarnos. Con Isaías, le decimos a
Dios: “Ojalá rasgaras los cielos y bajaras, /estremeciendo
las montañas con tu presencia” (Isaías 63:19).
Sí, Dios nos es fiel, porque somos hechura de las
manos de Dios. Dios es el alfarero, nosotros el barro. Y
sin embargo, nuestro concepto de cómo Dios vendrá a
salvarnos se origina en nuestra expectativa de un Dios
guerrero que estremece las montañas y llega a nuestra
vida con ruido y gloria. Pero Dios tiene otro plan: la
Encarnación.

Primera lectura - Isaías ruega por el retorno del Señor

bendiciones que los corintios han recibido debido a su fe

2. El dia domingo, 11 de diciembre, tendrémos la misa a las
7:30PM con mariachis, café y aguape.
3. El dia lunes, 12 de diciembre, a las 5:00AM, habrá la
serenata a la virgen, seguida por un cafe y antojitos mejicanos.
El mismo dia, a las 7:30PM, se celebrará la solemne misa en
HONOR A LA VIRGEN DE GUADALUPE, seguida por la
procesión alrededor del blóque. Esto se seguirá con mariaches y
comida.
4. El dia viernes, 16 de diciembre, comenzaremos las
tradicionales posadas/novenas de Navidad. Estarán cantando el
coro de niños. Será en el baseman de la escuela a partir de las
7:00PM.
