Stewardship Note: “Martha, who was busy with all the details
of hospitality, came to him and said . . .’Tell her to help me.’

it.” Few stories in Scripture better portray the fact that stewardship is an attitude, not an activity. Martha was busy, but Mary
had the right attitude. Pray and time spent with Christ is essential.
SIXTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

It is [Christ] whom we proclaim, admonishing everyone
and teaching everyone with all wisdom, that we may present
everyone perfect in Christ.

LISTEN
The first reading tells of the “annunciation” of
the birth of Isaac. It is profoundly mysterious,
beginning with the appearance of the “three
men.” This reading illustrates God’s active role
in our history.
The second reading treats a universal experience—suffering. Paul sees suffering as the mark of discipleship. He finds joy in the suffering he endures because it is for
the sake of the church. Through his preaching he hopes all
people will come to accept Christ.
The Gospel paints a lovely picture of Jesus at rest among his
friends. Luke has placed the incident right after the parable of
the Good Samaritan. But lest “activism” be seen as the only
path, we now hear Jesus’ call to sit quietly and listen to the
word of God. We have to be like both of the sisters. Even in
our harried and noisy world, there is an insistent call to sit back
SACRED HEART SOCIETY
The Executive Board of the Sacred Heart Society will meet
on Sunday, July 21st after the 8:15am Mass in the school
Conference room.
ST. JOSEPH POLISH WOMEN’S CLUB
We ask all members to meet on Tuesday, July 23rd at
6:30pm in the school cafeteria to discuss the club’s annual
fundraiser.
NOVENA/FEAST OF SAINT ANNE
Friday, July 26th, is the Feast Day of St. Anne and St.
Joachim, the parents of the Blessed Virgin Mary. We will celebrate this festivity at the Basilica on Sunday, July 28th.
A triduum will begin, according to tradition, on Thursday,
July 25th after 6:30am Mass, continue on Friday, July 26th,
Saturday, July 27 and conclude on Sunday, July 28th at 8:15 am
Mass.
According to church resources, the cult of St. Anne originated in the 6th century. Devotion to St. Joachim dates to the
8th century, however the names of the parents of Blessed Virgin Mary were already known in the 2nd century and were held
in great devotional esteem. St. Anne is the patroness of mothers and grandmothers.

It has been customary throughout the Catholic world to enroll
children to the care of St. Anne. Under the leadership of St.
Anne Society of St. Joseph Basilica the children at their baptism are enrolled under the care of St. Anne. There is a special
book with their picture placed at the altar of our Blessed
Mother. Once a year there is a Mass said for all the children
enrolled in the care of St. Anne. If your child was baptized in
the last several years, but you did not enroll your child you may
do so at this time by calling the rectory or Gen Lariviere at
(508 ) 943-1781.
St. Anne Society members pray for all enrollees on the 26th
of each month.
We invite parents and children to come to Mass on Sunday,
July 28th for a special blessing on the Solemnity of St. Anne.
New members of the Society and the Executive Board will be
installed at this 8:15am Mass.
It would be appropriate if the mothers and grandmothers of
the children enrolled would become members of the St. Anne
Society in a common effort to pray to God through the intercession of St. Anne for the children.
NEW HOLYDAY SCHEDULE
The new schedule for HolyDays of Obligation is as follows:
Vigil Mass 5:00pm; celebrated HolyDay 6:30am and 8:30am
(children’s Mass) - 5:00pm and 7:00pm (Polish).
The 6:30 am Mass will allow people who work to attend
Mass before work. At 5:00pm on both the Vigil & Holyday
Masses will be in English and at 7:00pm (Polish).
We hope this new schedule will be more convenient for the
majority of our parishioners.
SCHOOL NEWS
In our continuous effort to provide the highest level of education across all grades, we are pleased to announce that we are
adding to the Pre-K curriculum Macmillan/McGraw Hill’s
“Little Treasures Reading Program”. The “Little Treasures”
series is a developmentally appropriate, research based Pre-K
instructional plan. It is designed to prepare our children for the
academic and social requirements for Kindergarten. It is divided into ten units, organized around popular Pre-K themes
which include language development, phonological awareness,
alphabet recognition, print awareness, social emotional development and family involvement. It also provides integrated
literacy, math science, social studies and music lessons. High
quality literature coupled with explicit instruction and ample
practice, insures all children to have what they need to learn
and grow as life long readers and writers.
This new addition will expand our educational arsenal and
provide continuity with our current reading program, for K to
grade 5, which was purchased and implemented two years ago,
at a cost of $40,000.
Currently we are placing registrations for Kindergarten on a
waiting list; the Pre-k program is almost filled and if you plan
on registering your child to St. Joseph School, please do so as
soon as possible. As usual we give preference to our parishioners providing space is available.
PARISH COUNCIL
Election of new Parish Council members will take place during the weekend of July 27th/28th and due vacations will also
extend to August 3rd/4th. Three parishioners will be elected
to serve a 3-year term beginning September 2013.
Ballots will be placed in the pews for selection of new members.
We want to take this opportunity to thank our members for
serving for many years whose terms are expiring: George Baldowski, Sheryl Bergeron, Jane Gaudreau, Genevieve Lariviere,

NOVENA TO SAINT JOSEPH
We invite parishioners and friends who seek Divine assistance in their personal and family life through the intercession
of St. Joseph to join us on Wednesday, July 24th at 7:00pm in
our Basilica.
The Eucharistic Ministers will process with the statue of St.
Joseph from the Chapel of Our Lady of Czestochowa to the
sanctuary.
Please print your intentions legibly and place in the box provided. They will be read out loud or silently as specified during the Mass.
CEMETERY WATER DIFFICULTIES
Recently we have been experiencing problems with our water supply at the St. Joseph Garden of Peace. We have been
advised that the best solution at the present time is to replace
the existing system. We have received a proposal from a local
firm who estimates the cost to be approximately $7,000. Although water is available from the street to the garage area it is
difficult to carry water to the far side of the cemetery.
We apologize for the inconvenience, especially in this torrid
month of July. Please use the tap below the maintenance garage or perhaps you could transport water from your home until
this situation is remedied.
In addition, the backhoe broke down and must be repaired at
a significant cost, not only as much for the parts but especially
for the labor.
OFFICE OF RELIGIOUS EDUCATION
If you have not registered your son or daughter for Religious
Education classes for the 2013-2014 session, please do so as
soon as possible. There are several upper classmen who have
not yet returned their forms. The fee is $30 for one child and
$50 for two or more children. Forms are available at the entrances to the Basilica.
ONE MINUTE MEDITATIONS
When bad things happen consider this: Jesus knows how you
feel. Without cause, he was beaten, tortured, humiliated and
murdered. It doesn’t get much worse than that. Asking Jesus
to help you accept your sufferings will make them easier to
bear.

Science in Boston is holding an exhibit until Oct. 20, 2013
which includes fragments of the Dead Sea Scrolls and a
comprehensive collection of antiquities from Israel. This may
offer an excellent opportunity for youth or adult groups,
especially in a parish or cluster which would like to kick off
Biblical studies for young people and adults.

SZESNASTA NIEDZIELA ZWYKŁA

"Jego to głosimy, upominając każdego człowieka
i ucząc każdego człowieka z całą mądrością,
aby każdego człowieka okazać doskonałym w Chrystusie." (Kol 1, 28)
Kiedy słyszymy o apostolstwie i powołaniu do
świętości, przychodzą nam na myśl męczennicy
za wiarę, wielcy kaznodzieje, asceci. Wydaje się
że życie w rodzinie, zabieganie o sprawy
doczesne wyklucza apostolstwo i świętość.
Tymczasem „potrzeba niewiele albo tylko
jednego”. Żyjemy aktywnie, czynimy wiele, ale nic nie
powinno przesłaniać nam Boga. Niech jedynym powodem
naszych działań będzie miłość do Boga i bliźniego! Relacjami
kształtowanymi w miłości, wzajemną uwagą i troską, wreszcie
dobrze wykonywaną pracą nie tylko można, ale i trzeba się
modlić.
NOWENNA DO ŚW. ANNY
W dniach od 18 do 26 lipca w sanktuarium w Sturbridge
odbywa się 125 Nowenna do św. Anny. Tegoroczny temat
nowennowych rozważań brzmi: "Z wdzięcznym sercem".
W ciągu dziewięciu dni różnorodni goście prezentują
rozważania powiązane z powyższym tematem. Zapraszamy
parafian do wzięcia udziału w tym bardzo głęboko duchowym
wydarzeniu. Wszystkich zainteresowanych prosimy o kontakt z

WYBORY DO RADY PARAFIALNEJ
Wybory nowych członków do Rady Parafialnej odbędą się w

NOWENNA DO ŚW. JÓZEFA
W najbliższą środę, jak co tydzień już od dwóch miesięcy,
spotykamy się na połączonej ze Mszą św. Nowennie do św.
Józefa. Zapraszamy wszystkich parafian i przyjaciół. Bardzo
prosimy o wpisywanie intencji drukowanymi literami.
Jednocześnie przypominamy, że kartek z intencjami nie
przechowujemy na następny tydzień (następną nowennę). Jeśli
ktoś chce, aby modlić się w danej intencji przez szereg kilku
nowenn musi zapasywać intencję każdego tygodnia.
POTRZEBNI OCHOTNICY
Jak każdego lata w szkole, korzystając z nieobecności dzieci,
przeprowadzane są różnorodne prace remontowe. Zawracamy
się z prośba do osób, które byłyby zainteresowane praca przy
malowaniu ścian w klasach. Chętnych do pomocy prosimy o

TRUDNOŚCI Z WODĄ NA CMENTARZU
Jak wiadomo, od wiosny borykamy się z problemami z wodą
na cmentarzu. Problem ten narasta od wielu lat i z czasem, w
miarę jak cały system się starzeje, sytuacja staje się coraz
gorsza. Idealnym rozwiązaniem byłaby wymiana wszystkich
rur na nowe. Niestety jest to praca bardzo kosztowna. Jedna z
lokalnych firm wyceniła ją na około 7000 dolarów.
Bardzo prosimy o korzystanie z kranu, który znajduje się przy
garażu. Serdecznie przepraszamy za niedogodności, które stają
szczególnie uciążliwe w upalnym lipcu.
NOWY ROZKŁAD MSZY ŚW.
W święta, które przypadają dni powszednie będzie
obowiązywał następujący rozkład Mszy św.: w przeddzień
święta Msza wigilijna o godz. 17:00, w dzień święta 6:30, 8:30
(z dziećmi szkolnymi), 17:00 i 19:00 (po polsku). Mamy
nadzieję, że nowy rozkład będzie bardziej odpowiedni dla
parafian, którzy w dni świąteczne chcą uczestniczyć we Mszy.
RELIGIA
Przypominamy o zapisywaniu dzieci na katechizację na
przyszły rok szkolny tak szybko jak to możliwe. Opłata wynosi
$30 za jedno dziecko oraz $50 za dwoje lub więcej dzieci.
Formularze zapisowe są dostępne przy wejściach do Bazyliki.
Te same formularze i warunki obowiązują przy zapisie do
Bierzmowania.
SACRED HEART SOCIETY
Zebranie zarządu Sacred Heart Society odbędzie się dziś
(21 lipca) po Msz św. o godz. 8:15 w sali konferencyjnej.

ST ANNE SOCIETY
Stowarzyszenie św. Anny kontynuuje nabór nowych
członków, których uroczyste przyjęcie odbędzie się niedzielę
28 lipca na Mszy św. o godz. 8: 15. Wszystkich

KULT ŚW. ANNY
Kult św. Anny sięga dawnych wieków chrześcijaństwa. W
550 r. cesarz Justynian Wielki wzniósł kościół pod Jej
wezwaniem w Konstantynopolu. W Europie Zachodniej
pierwszy klasztor poświecony św. Annie powstał w 701 r. we
Francji (Floriac koło Rouen). Jednak na szeroką skalę Jej kult
upowszechnił się za sprawą powracających ze wschodu z
wypraw krzyżowych rycerzy, w XIII i XIV w. Powstało wiele
kościołów pod Jej wezwaniem, zaczęły mnożyć się miejsca
pielgrzymkowe we Francji, Niemczech, Austrii.
Pod patronatem św. Anny powstało 5 zakonów żeńskich. W
muzyce kościelnej poświęcono Świętej aż 118 hymnów i 36
sekwencji (XIV - XVI w.). Św. Anna została ogłoszona
patronką wielu miejscowości.
W Polsce rozkwit kultu rozpoczął się w XVI w. Popularne
były również bractwa pod wezwaniem św. Anny. Jedno z
najbardziej prężnych powstało za panowania Anny Jagiellonki i
Stefana Batorego. Jego celem było przeciwstawienie się
reformacji, a także zwalczanie pijaństwa i innych społecznych
patologii. Członkowie musieli odznaczać się nienaganną opinią
i wykształceniem. Do Bractwa św. Anny należeli między
innymi kanclerz Jan Zamojski i król Zygmunt III Waza. Imię
Anna nadawano w Polsce córkom rodów królewskich i
magnackich (Anna Jagiellonka, Anna Radziwiłówna).
Kult św. Anny zakorzenił się w Polsce głęboko, czego
dowodem jest ponad 180 świątyń, w tym kilka sanktuariów.
Szczególnie znany jest klasztor Sióstr Dominikanek w Świętej
Annie koło Częstochowy. Ponad 600 lat temu na tych
bagnistych terenach objawiła się św. Anna. Pasterzowi, który
pilnował swego stada, ukazały się trzy Osoby: Postać z
Dzieckiem na ręku i stojąca obok Niewiasta. Widzenie to
powtarzało się, więc na miejscu objawień ustawiono figurę
ukrzyżowanego Chrystusa, a niedługo potem kaplicę
poświęconą św. Annie, w której umieszczono figurę świętej,
znalezioną podobno na miejscu objawień.
Św. Annę szczególnie ukochał prastary i polski Śląsk, bo
była mu bardzo bliska przez swe niezwykłe przywiązanie do
rodziny, a Ślązacy są ludźmi, wśród których kult rodziny i
matki wybija się na pierwsze miejsce.
Pierwsze ośrodki kultu św. Anny powstały we Wrocławiu
(1386) i w Oleśnie (1414). W kościele oo. franciszkanów w
Opolu znajduje się kaplica z 1309 r., a w niej polichromia
przedstawiająca św. Annę z Matką Bożą i Dzieciątkiem Jezus
na rękach.
Największym ośrodkiem kultu Świętej jest w Polsce Góra
Świętej Anny na Opolszczyźnie. Miejsce to nazywane dawniej
było Górą Chełmską lub Górą św. Jerzego. Tu, we wspanialej
świątyni, zbudowanej w latach 1480-1516, znajduje się
niewielka figurka z drzewa bukowego mająca 66 cm
wysokości, przedstawiająca św. Annę Samotrzecią, trzymającą
na lewej ręce swoją Córkę Maryję, zaś na prawej swego
Wnuka, Jezusa Chrystusa. Rzeźba, pochodząca z XV w., ma
ogromną wartość historyczną, artystyczną oraz kultową. W
ciągu wieków oo. franciszkanie, stróżowie sanktuarium,
rozbudowali to miejsce. Powstała kalwaria z czterdziestoma
kaplicami, powstał Dom Pielgrzyma i Grota Lurdzka, gdzie
odbywają się doroczne uroczystości odpustowe.
