BABY SHOWER
Each year, the Church celebrates "Sanctity of Life
Month" during January. This time is set aside to remind
us of the sacredness of human life from conception to
natural death. Many issues challenge our beliefs - abortion, capital punishment, physician-assisted suicide, stem
cell issues - to name a few.
On January 22nd, in particular, we are reminded of the
anniversary of the Supreme Court's decision to legalize
abortion. For many years, our parish has participated in
a project to help support young, unwed mothers who turn
to the Church for help in bringing their babies to birth.
This is a small, but very positive and effective way of directly assisting women who may have considered aborting their unborn child.
On the weekends of January 16/17 and 23/24, we will
sponsor a "Baby Shower". When you come to Mass, we
ask that you bring new items for babies up to one year of
age, such as pampers, undershirts, stretchies, onesies,
blankets, crib sheets, clothing, etc. Boxes will be placed
by the front doors of the upper and lower churches to receive your donations. We are grateful for whatever support you can give to this project.
PARISH PANTRY COLLECTION
St. Rose of Lima has an on-going parish drive to collect donations for the food pantry. There will be a collection box situated in the upper and lower church vestibule
to collect donation of canned goods.
BISHOP KEARNEY HIGH SCHOOL GIFT AUCTION CARD PARTY
This year’s event will take place on Thursday, March
3, 2016, at the Dyker Beach Golf Course, 1030 86th St.,
and 7th Ave., Brooklyn. There will be complimentary
parking. The hours will be from 7:00PM - 11PM, and will

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
GOD’S BELOVED
Some year a rather eccentric quirk of the calendar
places this great feast on a Monday, but now it’s here for
our delight on a Sunday, as it should be. In the old
calendar, it was the octave day of Epiphany, exactly as it
is this year. It is the absolute end of the Christmas season,
and tomorrow we enter Ordinary Time.
As we conclude the Christmas season, there is one
more treasure from our tradition worth mentioning.
Everyone knows the “Twelve Days of Christmas.” British
Catholics invented it to teach the catechism to their
children at the time of the Reformation. The partridge in a
pear tree is, of course, Jesus in the tree of the Garden of
Eden. Each number is a clue to help children remember
aspects of our faith: two testaments in the Bible; three
Persons in the Trinity (or the virtues of Faith, Hope, and
Charity); the four evangelists; and the five golden rings,
the Torah, the first five books of the Bible. Then we have
the six days of creation, the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit,
the eight beatitudes, the nine fruits of the Holy Spirit, the
Ten Commandments, the eleven faithful apostles, and the
twelve points of belief in the Apostle’s Creed. For
persecuted Catholics, the beloved carol helped the faithful
to stay under the radar and have some fun passing on the
tradition to their children.
Only one week has passed since we celebrated the
feast of the Epiphany. No longer are we focused on the
images of the child Jesus surrounded by his parents and
the magi at the manger in Bethlehem. Today, it’s as if the
Church has pushed the “fast forward” button in the life of
Jesus. Today we celebrate his baptism in the Jordan.
When the Lord Jesus rises from the waters of baptism, the
heavens open and a voice announces, “You are my
beloved Son; with You I am well pleased” (Luke 3:22).
This event sets the stage for the unfolding of Jesus
Christ’s life and work, which will become our focus for
the rest of the year as we tune our ears to Saint Matthew’s
Gospel. As we prepare ourselves for this work, let us be
reminded that we, too, were counted among God’s
beloved at the moment of our own baptism.

Gdy więc lud oczekiwał z napięciem i wszyscy snuli

Duchem Świętym i ogniem. Kiedy cały lud przystępował

Przed stworzeniem świata Duch Pański spoczywał
nad wodami, przygotowując je niejako na uczestnictwo
w początku stwórczego dzieła Boga. Nad Jordanem ten
sam Duch zstępuje niczym gołębica, by przez wcielone
Słowo dać nowy początek, zwiastujący całemu
stworzeniu powrót do utraconego dziedzictwa. Ten sam
Duch i teraz napełnia wodę życiodajną mocą, by
wszyscy w niej zanurzeni w sakramencie chrztu stawali
się nowym stworzeniem. Odnówmy dziś w sobie
pragnienie życia pełnią łaski otrzymanej na chrzcie
świętym.

LAS AGUAS BAUTISMALES
Cuando se planta un césped nuevo, debe regarse
constantemente. Los jardineros dicen que esto “teje” el
césped al suelo. Lo mismo sucede cuando se injerta una
rama a un árbol: el cataplasma que los une debe estar
húmedo en todo momento. El agua es lo que mantiene
unidas a las células de nuestro cuerpo. Con razón las
religiones de todas las épocas y culturas han usado tanto
este símbolo. Cuando Jesús se sumerge en el Jordán para
ser bautizado, se “teje” a todo aquello que lo precedía. Al
sumergirse en el Jordán, se hizo uno con el pueblo de
Israel que había cruzado el río para llegar a su Tierra
Prometida. Junto a Juan Bautista, Cristo se tejió a la
tradición profética que presagiaba la venida del Reino de
Dios. Jesús se había convertido plenamente en humano en
las aguas del vientre de María y al participar del rito del
Bautismo del arrepentimiento, se sintió identificado con
nuestra frágil y pecaminosa humanidad. Por las aguas del
Bautismo Cristo continúa injertando nuevos miembros a
su Cuerpo, la Iglesia; gracias a nuestro destino de vida
eterna, por estas aguas somos limpiados del pecado y
recibimos la promesa de la gracia. Para nosotros, como
para Jesús, las aguas bautismales también inauguran
nuestra misión de proclamar la Buena Nueva.

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE
¿Recuerdas tu bautismo? Permítanme compartir mi
testimonio. No recuerdo los eventos del día en que me
bautizaron, pero tengo años recordando que, gracias a
Dios y mis padres, estoy bautizado. Trato de vivir mi vida
recordando mi bautismo, buscando que mi
comportamiento sea digno de una persona bautizada.
Fui bautizado al mes de haber nacido, y confirmado
cuando tenía sólo un añito (eran otros tiempos). Hice mi
primera (y no última) comunión a los siete años.
Continuaba asistiendo a las clases de catecismo
(doctrina), no obstante, cuando cumplí 17 años, sentí que
algo me faltaba. Mis amigos protestantes me invitaban a
sus Iglesias, pero yo buscaba a Dios en mi Iglesia
católica. Un día, gracias al grupo carismático recibí el
bautismo en el Espíritu Santo y desde ese momento mi
vida cambió. Ahora sé que el Espíritu lo había recibido en
mi bautismo, Confirmación y Primera Comunión, lo
único que debía hacer era permitirle actuar en mi vida.
Creo que en la vida de muchos cristianos, el Espíritu
Santo sigue esperando que le den permiso de actuar. Y tú,
¿qué esperas? Pídele al Espíritu que se mueva en tí y vive
