TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

Sometimes the treasures of art can provide us with
clues about traditions. Take, for example, the miter, the
conical hat with lappets, or back-flaps that fall to the
shoulders. This cap is worn by bishops in the Catholic
West. Eastern Catholics favor a crown, but we have this
curious headpiece. In Greek, the word means “turban.”
Old paintings and mosaics provide clues about headgear
for bishops, and there is very little artistic evidence for the
miter before the year 1000. Before then, some kind of
head covering might have been worn to offset the damp
and chill of unheated churches. The pope, as far back as
the seventh century, often wore a cap called a camelaucum. Around that time, artists painting St. Peter began to
portray their subject wearing this hat. By the year 1000 or
so, the pope began to grant similar helmet-shaped headgear as gifts to visiting abbots and bishops. They returned
home with these new chapeaus, and before long everybody wanted one!
Today, miters are granted not only to bishops, but to
certain favored abbots and occasionally abbesses. Pope
Benedict XVI set aside the tradition of the papal tiara in
favor of the miter, even on his coat of arms. Pope Paul VI
was the last pope to have a coronation. As recently as the
1960s, miters were towering skyscrapers of jewels and
rich silks, but now a simplicity of style is favored by bishops. Miters are here to stay, and experienced altar servers
know how to await the bishop’s removing of the miter,
since he does not wear it when he is saying the presidential prayers or the Eucharistic Prayer.

VALUES TO LIVE BY
SAINT JOHN MARY VIANNEY (1786-1859)
Today’s scriptures contain some catch phrases that are
still quite familiar in our world: “All is vanity,” and “Eat,
drink, and be merry” are both scriptural in origin. In the
same way that it is easy to pray last week’s Lord’s Prayer
thoughtlessly, it is easy to let the potent passages of
scripture that are built on these common sayings glide
right off our slick ears.
Last week’s scriptures instructed us to listen
attentively to the Lord, so that we might pray carefully.
Our listening and our prayer are intimately connected. In
the same way, this week we learn that our values and our
living are connected as well. It has become quite common
to ask, “Do you own your possessions or do they own
you?” Like the familiar maxims from today’s readings,
we might be tempted to quote this saying flippantly, and
think that in the quoting of it we have truly considered it,
perhaps lived it. Not true, Qoheleth, Paul, and Jesus tell
us today. It is not wrong to treasure or cherish things of
earth or of our own humanity; it is only wrong when those
things we cherish are not of God, are not of the selfgiving Christ.

A busy pastor jokingly suggests the secret of John
Vianney’s holiness: “He died seventeen years before
telephones!” Call they didn’t, but visit they did, keeping
Vianney eighteen hours a day in the confessional. Stories
abound of reading hearts and exorcisms, but Vianney’s
first miracle was getting ordained. Difficulty with studies
delayed him, prompting the rector’s apology to the
bishop, “So far to ordain just one, especially this one!”
The bishop, who could not know he was ordaining the
future patron saint of parish priests, replied, “No burden
to ordain one good priest!” In Ars, only an elderly handful
attended Mass, “praying,” one told Vianney, “for a priest
with brains.” But he stayed forty-two years, fulfilling the
promise he made the day he arrived. In a sculpture just
outside the village Vianney points skyward: “Show me
the way to Ars,” he tells a boy, “and I’ll show you the
way to heaven.” To someone who feared there was no
heaven beyond the grave, Vianney smiled, “My child, it
would have been heaven enough to have lived as Jesus’
disciple on earth.”

Jest nieraz człowiek, który w swej pracy odznacza się
mądrością, wiedzą i dzielnością, a udział swój musi on
oddać człowiekowi, który nie włożył w nią trudu. To także
jest marność i wielkie zło. Cóż bowiem ma człowiek z
wszelkiego swego trudu i z pracy ducha swego, którą
mozoli się pod słońcem? Bo wszystkie dni jego są
cierpieniem i zajęcia jego utrapieniem. Nawet w nocy
serce jego nie zazna spokoju. To także jest marność.

Podczas Mszy świętej gromadzimy się wokół ołtarza,
świadomi największego skarbu, jaki otrzymaliśmy od
Boga. Właściwa hierarchia wartości porządkuje nasze
odniesienia do świata oraz rzeczywistości
nadprzyrodzonej. Warto posłuchać św. Pawła
i „przyoblec się w nowego człowieka”, oświeconego
mądrością płynącą z Ewangelii oraz karmiącego się
pokarmem duchowym. Pan zawczasu napomina swoich
słuchaczy: „Uważajcie i strzeżcie się chciwości”.
Zabiegajmy więc o te bogactwa, które są zadatkiem życia
wiecznego.

Hoy el mensaje de las Escrituras contiene algunas
frases todavía familiares en nuestro mundo: “Todo es
vanidad” y “come, bebe y sé feliz” tienen su origen en la
Biblia. Así como resulta fácil rezar el Padre Nuestro sin
pensar, también es fácil dejar que los potentes mensajes
bíblicos que se fundan en dichos de sentido común se
deslicen por nuestros resbaladizos oídos.
El mensaje bíblico de la semana pasada nos instruyó a
escuchar atentamente al Señor, para que podamos rezar
con cuidado. Nuestro oír y nuestro rezar están
íntimamente ligados. De igual manera, esta semana
aprendemos que nuestros valores y nuestra vida también
están ligados. Se ha tornado común preguntar: “¿Eres
amor de tus posesiones o son ellas las que te poseen?” Al
igual que las máximas de las lecturas de hoy, podemos
sentirnos tentados a citarlas sin más, y pensar que al
hacerlo verdaderamente las consideramos, y tal vez las
vivimos. No es verdad, nos dicen hoy Qohelet, Pablo y
Jesús. No es malo atesorar o deleitarnos en las cosas de la
tierra o de nuestra propia humanidad; sólo está mal
cuando lo que nos deleita no es de Dios, y no son del
Cristo que se entrega.
