From the Pastor
Every family and individual has a time of testing and pain. Mine occurred once again
recently with my father. These last six weeks have been spent with his illness and
finally his death and funeral. Even so, it was a time of great grace in that I was
able to be by his side and witness his strength and patience even in his debility.
What a great example he was to us. For those last days I was able to spend with
him, I am truly grateful.
At this time, I would like to first thank the wonderful staff at St. Ferdinand for
their aid and support. They freed me from worry about all of the cares here so that
I could concentrate on the arrangements for the funeral. They helped me in preparing the liturgy
for the funeral Mass by working on the program. To my colleagues at the rectory offices, I thank
you more than words can express.
To the many parishioners who sent me cards and notes of condolence, I thank you for helping to
alleviate the sense of loss one feels in these times and, more so, to help me feel connected to this
parish family where I have spent the last sixteen years.
To those who expressed their sympathy at the doors of the church, thank you too, for it has made
me aware of how important it is to acknowledge personally, in one manner or another, that someone who has suffered the loss of a loved one feels alone and needs to reconnect .
No one is self sufficient. We all need one another. Thank you all for being there.
As members of the parish faith
community, it is our responsibility to
remember both in concrete and spiritual
ways those who cannot celebrate with
us each week because they are ill.
Those who are sick in turn, remember
all of us daily in their prayers and in their sufferings. We
experience many blessings because of their remembering
us. And so ... please remember in your prayers:

School may be out for the summer, but MARKET DAY is
still here! Summertime grilling is the perfect time to enjoy
the outstanding quality of Market Day meats. The summer
sale will be held on SATURDAY, JULY 19 at 10:00 a.m. in
the school cafeteria. Order forms are available in the
church. This will be your only opportunity this summer to
keep your freezer stocked. Completed order forms are due
in Church by Sunday, July 11. Order on-line at www.marketday.com by noon, Wednesday, July 16. Any questions
call Tammy Sammarco 286-5235.
CLASS OF 2004! This is also the time to benefit our
incoming graduation class. The volunteers for this sale will
be parents and students of the Class of 2004. A portion of
the proceeds will be used to help offset graduation expenses. If you are an 8th grade family and are planning to volunteer please contact Mary Bucaro at 725-2629. Don't forget to place an order yourself.
2003-2004 VOLUNTEERS. Due to the lack of participation (number of orders placed each month), the number of
volunteers scheduled for each sale will be reduced this
next school year. Market Day is not only a valuable
fundraiser for the school it is a valuable volunteer opportunity for busy working families. Please support Market
Day by placing an order, especially when you are scheduled to volunteer at that sale.

Dear Father Cortesi and Parishioners
of St. Ferdinand’s —
Thank you for the May sharing check of
$1,055.00 for our parish and its ministries. We
really appreciate your caring and sharing.
Recently a crew from the Archdiocese came out to
survey our church boiler. They recommended that it be
removed and have a more efficient one put in. We’re
happy, we just don’t know how to celebrate a funeral
for a boiler. It was good and faithful till the end. It
deserves a fitting send off!
You’re in our prayers and in a special Mass I
offer each month.
With thanks,
Father Ray

Spod pióra Ks. Proboszcza
Ka¿da rodzina i ka¿dy z nas indywidualnie przechodzi okres próby i bólu. Mój nadszed³
po raz kolejny. Ostatnie szeœæ tygodni up³ynê³y pod znakiem ciê¿kiej choroby mojego ojca,
a w koñcu jego œmierci i pogrzebu. Choæ by³ to czas przepe³niony smutkiem, by³ jednoczeœnie pe³nym zadumy i wdziêcznoœci, ¿e mog³em trwaæ u jego boku i doœwiadczyæ
jego si³y i cierpliwoœci nawet w chorobie. Jakim wspania³ym przyk³adem by³ on dla nas.
Teraz chcia³bym w pierwszej kolejnoœci podziêkowaæ wspania³ym pracownikom Koœcio³a
Pomogli mi przygotowaæ liturgiê pogrzebow¹ i
program obrz¹dku.
najbli¿szego, szczególnie wtedy, gdy czuje siê samotna i potrzebuje siê odnaleŸæ.
Nikt nie jest samowystarczalny. Wszyscy potrzebujemy siebie nawzajem. Dziêkujê za to, ¿e jesteœcie.

29 czerwca œwiêto Aposto³ów Piotra i Paw³a
Pewnym jest, ¿e œw. Aposto³owie Piotr i
Pawe³ byli przeœladowani w Rzymie. Legenda
Domy i miejsca rozrywek zosta³y zniszczone. Ludzie byli coraz
najwiêkszych liderów chrzeœcijañstwa Piotra i Paw³a.
Gdy Piotr us³ysza³ o narastaj¹cych przeœladowaniach
- uciek³ z Rzymu. Lecz ujrza³ Jezusa id¹cego w
kierunku Rzymu. “Dok¹d idziesz?” zapyta³ Piotr
(“Quo vadis?”) “Do Rzymu by jeszcze raz zostaæ
ukrzy¿owanym” odpowiedzia³ smutnie Jezus. Piotr,
powrotem do miasta.
Piotr i Pawe³ spotkali siê w dzieñ egzekucji. Pawe³
by³ wiêziony w Rzymie pod postaci¹ aresztu
domowego. Poniewa¿ Pawe³ by³ obywatelem
rzymskim unikn¹³ œmierci jaka czeka³a Piotra
- ukrzy¿owanie w centrum miasta. Pawe³
mia³ byæ stracony przez œciêcie g³owy poza
murami Rzymu.
29 czerwca Piotr i Pawe³ szli objêci wzd³u¿
alei Ostian.
razy. W tych miejscach trysnê³y fontanny (dziœ na
tych miejscach stoi Klasztor Trzech Fontann. Mnisi
wyrabiaj¹ czekoladê.). Poniewa¿ arena publiczna
pochowane w grobie ¿ebraka. Ten grób jest dzisiaj
wizytówk¹ Watykanu.
29 czerwca jest œwiêtem aposto³a ¯ydów i aposto³a
Galilejczyków. Wspólnie zanieœli œwiatu przes³anie
Chrystusa. W niektórych krajach dzieñ ten jest
œwiêtem narodowym.

•There’s more to life than college and/or a job. Living
out the young adult years, the twenties and thirties,
whether you are married or single, whether you live at
home, are building a home of your own, or are out on
your own, is one of the most exciting times in life. If you
are in college, you begin contemplating career opportunities and watch your skills develop. If school is already a
memory, your education and skill is at work, making
money and building up your own skill and personal
integrity. Yet school and/or career are not ends in themselves. Often times they open up more questions than they
answer.
This summer Our Lady of Victory will be hosting a fourweek speaker series exclusively for young adults.
Theology-on-Tap will deal with young adult issues and
questions. The program will be a gathering of young
adults from neighboring parishes in a common search for
meaning. Besides lively topics, Theology-on-Tap will present some very challenging speakers. Watch for it. It
begins the week of July 13th.
We invite you to join us on Monday evenings, from 7:309:30 p.m. in the School Hall.

Saints Peter and Paul, Apostles

Saints Peter and Paul
by Paul Turner
That Saints Peter and Paul suffered martyrdom
under persecutions in Rome is virtually certain.
The legends about their death lack historical
proof, but they make a great story:
Fire broke out in Rome in 64 A.D. under Nero,
the emperor-violinist. Housing and places of
amusement were destroyed. The people grew
angry at Nero, who blamed the Christians for the blaze and
persecuted them. To placate the people in their continuing
distress, Nero ordered the death of Christianity’s two
greatest leaders, Peter and Paul, in the year 67.
When Peter heard about the growing persecutions, he fled
Rome. But he saw a vision of Jesus walking back toward
the city of Rome. "Where are you going?" Peter asked.
("Quo vadis?") "To Rome, to be crucified again," Jesus
mournfully replied. Peter, knowing he had to follow his
master, turned about and went back to the city.
On the day of their execution, Peter and Paul met. Paul
had been in prison in Rome, under house arrest. Since he
was a Roman citizen he avoided the kind of death which
awaited Peter — crucifixion in the city. Paul was to be
beheaded outside the city walls. On June 29, Peter and
Paul embraced on the Ostian Way. Peter marched north
toward the public arena; Paul marched south outside the city gate. When Paul was beheaded, his
head bounced three times. A spring of water
gushed forth at each place. (The monastery of
the three fountains stands on the site today. The
residents make chocolate.) Since the main civic
arena had been destroyed in the fire, Peter was
crucified in a makeshift location. Claiming he
was not worthy to be killed like his master, he was turned
upside down on the cross. After he died, his body was
buried in a pauper's grave. That grave is the sight of the
Vatican.
On June 29 we celebrate the apostle of the Jews and the
apostle of the Gentiles. Together they brought the message
of Christ to the world. So significant is their feast that in
some countries it is a holy day of obligation. In the United
States, when the feast falls on Sunday, it takes the place of
the usual ordinary time liturgy. It helps us celebrate our
mission to bring Christ to the world, no matter the cost.
Paul Turner, pastor of St. John Regis Parish in Kansas City, MO,
