David Beckham needs little introduction. He’s probably one of the most famous celebrity
footballers and fashion icons.
1. …………………………
He was born on May 2nd, 1975 in London as the son of Sandra Georgina, a hairdresser and
David Beckham, a kitchen fitter. As a boy, he played regularly and when asked what he was
going to do as an adult, he always repeated to his teachers’ disbelief he would be
a professional football player.
2. …………………………
David’s parents were fanatical Manchester United (MU) supporters who used to travel to Old
Trafford, MU’s ground, to watch the team’s home matches. David inherited their passion for
this team and soon began attending one of Bobby Charlton’s football schools in Manchester,
where because of his talent he won the chance to take part in a training session at FC
Barcelona.
3. …………………………
His football career started at Ridgeway Rovers before he moved to Tottenham Hotspurs.
However, his real dream came true, when he joined his beloved club, Manchester United in
1992 aged just seventeen. During his time there, United won the Premier League title six
times, the FA Cup twice, and the UEFA Champions League in 1999. He left United for Real
Madrid and went to play for Los Angeles Galaxy, where he became the captain of the team.
4. …………………………
During his outstanding career Beckham has captained England about 60 times, has twice been
runner-up for FIFA World Player of the Year, he was the first British footballer to play 100
Champions League matches and was Google’s most searched-for of all sports topics. He
received an OBE, an honorary title, from the Queen for his sports successes and he still is
a very popular sports figure all over the world.
5. …………………………
In 2005, Beckham founded the David Beckham Academy football school in London and in
Los Angeles. The academies offered football training to boys and girls aged 3-15. They ran
a schools programme, too. However, both closed soon afterwards. David then decided to
develop a mobile academy to travel around the UK as well as to other countries.

6. …………………………
However, Beckham’s fame is not limited to the game only. His relationship and marriage to
Victoria, a famous member of the musical group Spice Girls, contributed to David’s position
outside the world of sport. Beckham became known as a fashion icon, and together with
Victoria, the couple became popular with clothing designers, health and fitness specialists,
fashion magazines, perfume and cosmetics manufacturers and even hair stylists.
7. …………………………
The player is also known for his charity work. He has helped UNICEF since he started to play
for Manchester United. In January 2005, Beckham became a Goodwill Ambassador for
UNICEF’s Sports for Development programme. More recently Beckham has offered his
contributions to the Unite for Children, Unite against AIDS and Malaria No More campaigns.
