TOP THREE INVENTIONS
Would you be able to name the top three technological inventions of modern times? One
of the national newspapers has recently asked its readers this question and here are the
results.
3.1. __
Let’s start with number three on the list. A traditional version of this has been available
all over the world for ages. However, it was only due to inventing its computer form that
music has become even more popular. MP4 players are now accessible to everyone and
it is only a matter of time before other song storage media become a thing of the past.
3.2. __
Next on the list comes the Global Positioning System, or GPS as it is more commonly
known. Indeed, this device is even more useful than we may think for when we are
travelling. For example, there are lots of ways in which GPS can make our journeys easier.
Not only does it keep us going in the right direction in an unknown place but it also informs
us about the nearest petrol stations, traffic jams or the time left to reach our destination.

Among all digital innovations, the mouse is easily the most overlooked useful device.
Nowadays, we cannot imagine using our PCs without one of them. However, we need
to remember that during the times when computers were huge awkward things, it was
considered impossible that such a tiny device would be able to make them operate.
Despite this, the mouse was, in fact, a great technological advancement of the 1960s.

Zadanie 4.
Przeczytaj tekst, z którego usunięto cztery zdania. Wpisz w luki 4.1.–4.4. litery,
którymi oznaczono brakujące zdania (A–E), tak aby otrzymać logiczny i spójny tekst.
Uwaga! Jedno zdanie nie pasuje do żadnej luki.
David Beckham is Britain’s most recognised sportsman. With all the teams he has played
with in his career, he has managed to win more cups and championships than any other
player in the history of the English game.
Beckham’s career began when he was only 17 years old, that is in 1992, when he signed
a professional contract with Manchester United. 4.1. __These trophies include the
English Premier League, the FA Cup and the European Champions League in 1999.
He stayed with the team for over ten years until 2003. 4.2. __
While he was at Real Madrid, Beckham became the first British footballer to play a hundred
matches in the European Champions League. 4.3. __ Earlier, in 1999 and 2003, he came
second place in the FIFA ‘World Player of the Year’ award.
In the last five years of his career, Beckham played for LA Galaxy in the USA and Paris
Saint Germain in France. While playing in Paris, he did something absolutely amazing.
4.4. __ Indeed, few sportsmen would be willing to do something so generous. Finally,
on 16th May 2013, Beckham played his last professional football match, during which
he received a standing ovation from the fans.
A. Namely, he donated his salary to a children’s charity.
B.
Manchester United is one of the best football clubs in Europe.
C.
This is when he left Manchester United for Real Madrid.
D. But this was not his first major individual achievement.
E. During his time with them, the team won a number of cups and titles.

Przeczytaj informacje o trzech osobach (5.1.–5.3.) oraz opisy czterech restauracji
(A–D). Do każdej osoby dopasuj restaurację, która mogłaby ją zainteresować. Wpisz
odpowiednią literę obok numeru każdej osoby. Uwaga! Jedna restauracja nie pasuje

5.1. __
Wendy
I really love eating out! I just
love trying out new places and
appreciate simple cooking.
I particularly enjoy small
restaurants, not too smart with just a few
tables, which simply serve good quality food.
The only problem is money: I’m a student
and can’t afford to visit any classy expensive
restaurants.
5.2. __
Dave
When I eat out, it’s usually
with my family. I like to take
my parents to dinner once
a month. I usually pay quite
a lot, because we choose to go to rather
elegant restaurants. I can’t take my parents
to a fast food place, right? I also appreciate
good service: the waiter has to take good
care of us.
5.3. __
Rita
I must say that I’m not a big fan
of eating out. I mean not having
to cook is great, but I don’t
need to spend time in a smart
restaurant, enjoying a meal with my friends.
All I need is to enter a place, buy some food,
eat quickly and leave. And, of course, the less
I pay, the better.
A. La Francetta
If you’re looking for a classy restaurant,
this is the place for you. The menu offers
a wide selection of the finest dishes which
are accompanied by a nice bottle of wine.
It is not only the food, but also the
professional waiters that are really
impressive.
B. Go-Slow
Contrary to what the name suggests, the
restaurant is a fast food joint, where you
simply go in and out. But there is one
big difference! The place claims to have
the fastest service in town. And the staff
take good care of the customers at very
reasonable prices.
C. JonJoe
The food served here is absolutely delicious.
However, the restaurant is pretty difficult
to classify. It resembles a fast food place,
but the prices on the menu are expensive.
The owners say that this is because of the
high quality products that they use to prepare
their unique dishes.
D. Luigi and Sons
It’s a small, family-run restaurant, perfect for
an evening with friends. They have a rather
short menu with only a few dishes. All the
meals are really fresh as the menu changes
each day. The food is tasty and fairly cheap:
good value for money!
