The Gdańsk Development Strategy until 2015 adopted by the City Council includes “enhancing Gdańsk’s role as the World Capital of Amber” among its strategic goals. For several years now, we have consistently been consolidating the city’s standing in this regard by such efforts as popularising knowledge about amber and developing amber research. That was precisely the reason for my initiative to establish the World Amber Council in 2006, which now gathers over a dozen specialists from throughout the world – experts who deal with amber research, its history, properties and deposits. The support of the city authorities has also lead to the founding of the Amber Museum; each year the city budget allocates significant funds to enlarge the Museum’s collection of antique and contemporary amber art, as well as its collection of natural amber nuggets and amber inclusions. The authorities of Gdańsk also support amber science clubs, amber lessons, workshops and outdoor games for kids and young people and hold honorary auspices over the School on the Amber Road competition. Po raz pierwszy mieszkańcy i goście Gdańska będą mogli uczestniczyć w otwartym seminarium, podczas którego światowej sławy eksperci przybliżą zagadnienia związane z konserwacją zabytkowych wyrobów i dzieł sztuki z bursztynu. Paweł Adamowicz Prezydent Miasta Gdańska I am happy that this year’s meeting of the World Amber Council will take place during Gdańsk City Day. For the first time the people of Gdańsk and its visitors will be able to take part in an open seminar, where experts of worldwide renown will explain issues related to the conservation of historical amber artefacts and works of art. The session of the World Amber Council will be accompanied by a publication with the abstracts of the addresses of the WAC members, which highlight many intriguing scientific, cultural and economic events related to amber throughout the world, in Europe and in Gdańsk. I am convinced that by reading these materials we will broaden our general knowledge about the Gold of the North and help to promote Gdańsk – the World Capital of Amber. Zwykle posiedzenia mają charakter konferencji, podczas której poruszane są aktualne problemy branży bursztynowej w skali świata, krajów i regionów. W tym roku będziemy omawiać światowe i regionalne aktualności bursztynowe obejmujące głównie lata 2007–2009, które dotyczą geologii (nowe złoża, wydobycie), osiągnięć naukowych (fizyka, chemia, paleontologia, konferencje, kongresy), sztuki (muzealnictwo, moda, wzornictwo, konserwacja) oraz zagadnień gospodarczych (targi, podaż surowca, kondycja branży bursztynowej, promocja). Podczas obrad uprzywilejowaną pozycję zajmuje problematyka dotycząca bursztynu bałtyckiego, pochodzącego z rejonu Zatoki Gdańskiej oraz rozwoju bursztynnictwa w Gdańsku i w regionie pomorskim. Established in Gdańsk in 2006, upon the initiative of Mayor of Gdańsk Paweł Adamowicz, the World Amber Council meets once a year. Usually, the WAC’s sessions have the form of a conference where the current affairs of the amber industry are discussed on the global, national and regional scale. This year we will discuss global and regional amber news covering chiefly the period from 2007 to 2009, concerning geology (new deposits, extraction), scientific achievements (physics, chemistry, palaeontology, conferences, congresses), art (museums, fashion, design, conservation) and economic issues (fairs, raw amber supply, the condition of the amber industry, promotion). Issues concerning Baltic amber, which comes from the area of the Bay of Gdańsk and the development of the amber industry in Gdańsk and the Pomeranian region will have a privileged position during the sessions. Largest amber deposit in the cretaceous in Europe? Miało to miejsce w lutym 2008 r. In the Spanish province Cantabria, near the caves of El Soplao, ca. 3 km distance from Rábago, two lady geologists discovered the amber deposit in the slope at the side of a new built road. This was in February 2008. Only at the end of July, 2008 this new discovery was revealed to the public and praised as the most important and largest amber deposit in Europe. From the beginning, the variety of colours and the abundance of inclusions was what surprised the experts most. The inclusions of this amber deposit are said to surpass everything known so far. Up to now the layer near Rábago has yielded midges, wasps, spiders, and the scarce blue amber which is thought to be the oldest in the world. In the meantime more details have been published. The amber originates from Cretaceous time, i.e. its age is 110 million years. Such deposits are very rare, particularly those with insect and plant inclusions. Amber sites from sauriers’ time are known in the Near East (Lebanon, Jordan), the west of France, South England, Myanmar. In Spain, deposits of this age are to be found in Peńacerrada-Moraza (the famous Alava amber site) and Sant Just (Teruel). Well preserved inclusions are scarce in most of these old deposits. In the opinion of Spanish experts the El Soplao deposit is the largest and most fossil rich of its kind from the Cretaceous. The amber producing tree is said to be a coniferous tree, an Araucaria. Leaves from the genus Frenelopsis are frequently found, also imprints of their typical veins. According to the experts the deposit is of some extent which is rather unusual for this kind of deposits. Up to now an amber bearing layer of 25 m length and one AK TUALNOŚCI BURSZT YNOWE Według ekspertów badane złoże jest rozległe w sposób dość niezwykły, jak na ten typ nagromadzeń. Dalszymi pracami wydobywczymi kierują dwie odkrywczynie, dr Idoia Rosales i dr María Najarro z hiszpańskiego Instytutu Geologii i Górnictwa (IGME). This is said to be only the “peak of the iceberg”. Under the lead of the two discoverers, Dr. Idoia Rosales and Dr. María Najarro of the Spanish Institute of Geology and Mining (IGME), the excavations are being continued. Three scientists specialized in Spanish amber take part in them. It is meanwhile part of a national project with financial support from the Ministry of Science and Research, in which Spanish, French, Italian, and American scientists participate. All of them belong to a multi-discipline group that is going to study and describe the finds of El Soplao. The scientist assume that the unusual abundance and the quality of the amber inclusions of El Soplao will increase the number of discoveries of new genera and species and more detailed information regarding the palaeoecology of the Cretaceous forests will be obtained. In the Cretaceous the diversification and dispersion of pollen-collecting insects coincided with the appearance of the first angiosperms – one more fact that enhances the importance of this deposit and gives hope for further interesting results and more knowledge (of the evolution). Bursztyn z El Soplao, fot. W. Weitschat Amber from El Soplao AK TUALNOŚCI BURSZT YNOWE Odkrycie bursztynu w Australii Tekst: częściowo autorstwa Dana Bickela (Denisia, 2009). 8 Amber ne ws Australian amber discovery Co-written by Dan Bickel Until recently, Australia was not known to have amber deposits, apart from small amounts associated with Tertiary coal in the state of Victoria. However, since 2003 pieces of amber have been found along the high tide mark on the eastern or Coral Sea shoreline of Temple Bay. This area is remote wild country and can only readily be reached by boat, which may account for its rather late discovery. When fisherman Dale Wicks and his partner Beth Norris went for evening walks on the remote coast of Cape York Peninsula in far north Queensland, they became intrigued by large chunks of strange-looking rock in the beaches. Luckily they decided to send a specimen away for scientific analysis, with astonishing results. The couple had stumbled across an ancient treasure on the sand, the first amber to be discovered in Australia. Many of the pieces, some as large as footballs, contained well preserved flies, beetles, spiders, flowers, fungi, moss, fern spores, pollen and even water and air bubbles from a distant past, perhaps as much as 50 million years ago. Hank Gothelp, a palaeontologist at the University of NSW, who has been studying the amber, considered it to be one of the most significant finds in Australia because of the volumes of information the specimens contain. Colchester i in. (2006) poddał próbki kopalnej żywicy z Półwyspu Jork standardowym badaniom mineralogicznym, m.in. spektrofotometrii w podczerwieni FTIR oraz chromatografii gazowej i spektrometrii masowej. Amber ne ws also is derived from an Agathis species, of which there are four extant species in Queensland. Some 300 arthropod inclusions have been found so far in Cape York amber. These include ants, spiders, wasps, beetles, flies, termites, mites, and other taxa. As well, there is abundant plant material, including pollen and blossom fragments. The geological source of the amber has not been discovered. However, amber pieces are possibly washed Wciąż jeszcze nie określono botanicznego pochodzenia bursztynu z Półwyspu Jork Jednak podobieństwo jego mineralogicznych wyróżników do cech szczególnych kopalu kauri z Nowej Zelandii wskazuje, że również on pochodzi od gatunku Agathis, z którego w Queensland przetrwały cztery gatunki. During 2007 a scientific expedition was to look for the source of the amber, the main deposit on land from which the chunks have been eroded and washed into the sea before ending up on the shore. The search will not be easy as it is incredibly remote in this part of Queensland. W bursztynie z Półwyspu Jork znaleziono dotychczas około 300 inkluzji stawonogów, m.in. mrówki, pająki, osy, chrząszcze, muchy, termity, roztocza i inne taksony. Ponadto występuje w nim bogaty materiał roślinny, w tym pyłek i fragmenty kwiatostanów. Hundreds of pieces have been collected ranging from a few millimetres to almost 20 cm in diameter, and with colours from yellow to opaque deep brown and dark red. Colchester et. al. (2006) subjected samples of the fossilized Cape York resin to standard mineralogical testing, including FTIR and gas-chromatography mass spectrometry. Specimen were found to represent both, copal and true amber resin. They also showed the Cape York resins to be broadly similar to Baltic amber and Kauri gum (copal) but sufficiently different in finer details to have their own distinctive signature. The botanical origin of the Cape York amber is yet to be determined. However, the similarity of its mineralogical signature to that of New Zealand kauri copal suggests it 9 Bursztyn australijski Australian amber down creeks to the coast during monsoonal rains, and then redeposited and/or carried alongshore by currents. Therefore, Cape York amber joins Baltic amber as being the second major occurrence where most pieces have been found on flotsam on beaches. Along the strandline the Cape York amber occurs together with pumice. This fact could possibly indicate that the amber does not come from the mainland, but was transported by ocean currents from a far away country. Thus, it will be difficult to find the geological source of the Cape York amber. AK TUALNOŚCI BURSZT YNOWE 10 Amber ne ws AK TUALNOŚCI BURSZT YNOWE 11 Amber ne ws 1991). The present state of knowledge in respect to amber chemistry has been recently summarized by VáVRA (2009). (1992). Badania bursztynu przeprowadza się zazwyczaj z jednego z poniższych powodów: 1. Określenie indywidualnej odmiany mineralogicznej danej żywicy 2. Identyfikacja imitacji – podróbek i/lub falsyfikatów 3. Określenie możliwych źródeł roślinnych („drzewa bursztynonośne”) 4. Pochodzenie (archeologicznych) próbek bursztynu. Do wszystkich tych różnych aspektów rosnąca liczba autorów (np. Beck, Sawkiewicz, Kosmowska-Ceranowicz) stosuje spektroskopię w podczerwieni, którą wprowadził Hummel (1958). Identyfikację rozmaitych związków o niskiej masie cząsteczkowej umożliwiło zastosowanie chromatografii gazowo-cieczowej/spektroskopii masowej – czyli metody wprowadzonej do chemicznych badań nad bursztynem w Polsce przez Urbańskiego i in. (1976). Do identyfikacji indywidualnych odmian mineralogicznych bursztynu oraz potencjalnych tworzyw sztucznych Chemical studies of fossil resins started at least with the isolation of succinic acid – probably in the form of its anhydride – from amber in 1546 by Agricola (1494–1555), the famous ‘father of mineralogy’. Studies of amber are in fact closely related to the history of organic chemistry and the development of its various analytical techniques. A considerable amount of detailed knowledge about the chemistry of fossil resins has been yielded by a considerable number of authors within the last few decades: the high-molecular-mass compounds (‘HMM’ – the ‘polymer backbone of ambers’), as well as the low-molecular-mass compounds (‘LMM’) have thus been described for various types of ambers. Modern chemical studies of fossil resins have also resulted in the introduction of a chemical classification of ambers and related substances as first published by Anderson & al. (1992). Amber studies are usually performed for one of the following reasons: 1. Identification of single mineral species of ambers 2. Identification of imitations – fakes and/or forgeries 3. Determination of possible botanical sources (the ‘amber trees’) 4. Provenance of (archaeological) amber samples. For all these four different aspects infrared spectroscopy has been applied by a steadily increasing number of authors (e.g. Beck, Savkevich, Kosmowska-Ceranowicz) after having first been introduced by Hummel (1958). The identification of various low-molecular-mass compounds has become possible by means of the application of gas liquid chromatography/mass spectroscopy – a method introduced into amber chemistry in Poland by Urbański & al. (1976). For the identification of single mineral species of amber as well as for the identification of possible plastic material used in the production of imitation of ambers pyrolysis gas chromatography has been applied with good success (e.g. HECK, 1999; SHEDRINSKY & al., Georg Bauer (Georgius Agricola), zwany ojcem mineralogii, swoje bogato ilustrowane dzieło o górnictwie, rudach i minerałach, hutnictwie oraz obróbce metali ukończył w 1550 roku w Chemnitz w Saksonii. Georg Bauer (Georgius Agricola), known as the father of mineralogy, completed his lavishly illustrated book on mining, ores and minerals, metallurgy and metalworking in 1550 in Chemnitz, Saxony. stosowanych w produkcji imitacji bursztynu z powodzeniem stosuje się pirolityczną chromatografię gazową (np. Heck, 1999; Shredinsky i in., 1991). Realizing all the detailed results achieved so far, there remains nevertheless still much to be done: many of the different rare species of amber are still largely understudied in fact. An atlas of infrared spectra for different species of amber and related organic minerals is badly needed too; chromatographical characterizations and data for as many as possible types of amber should be summarized and physical characteristics (e.g.: melting point, refractive index) given. Such extensive studies can be performed with good success only on the basis of a broad cooperation with colleagues from Poland. One of the main goals of such a cooperation should be the establishment of an updated list of valid and invalid names of fossil and subfossil amber minerals and related substances. Such studies should also include important types of copals (‘recent to subfossil resins’). For any modern study of chemical and physical characteristics of amber the application of rather expensive laboratory equipment is an utmost necessity; in future studies we plan to include however also a critical evaluation of different more inexpensive methods of ‘classical’ chemistry hoping to be able finally to recommend the one or the other simple test as a method of discrimination between different species of subfossil and fossil amber species. AK TUALNOŚCI BURSZT YNOWE 12 Amber ne ws Inkluzje – stan badań i nowe możliwości Inclusions – current state of research and new possibilities Wiesław Krzemiński Wiesław Krzemiński W okresie powojennym powoli zaczęło powracać zainteresowanie badaniami nad bursztynem bałtyckim. The post-World War II period saw a gradual comeback of interest in research on Baltic amber. Museum and private collections of amber inclusions which were re-accumulated from scratch made it possible to take up serious scientific research once again. Bursztyn bałtycki liczący ok. 40 mln lat dzięki ogromnej ilości inkluzji stanowi doskonałą, pośrednią bazę do badań nad ewolucją i pokrewieństwami w wielu grupach bezkręgowców od początku kredy do faun współczesnych. A special impulse to stimulate fossil fauna research, including research on inclusions in Baltic amber, was the popularisation of cladistic methods of research on the phylogeny of the living world, as well as the discovery of many fossil resins with inclusions from various geological periods from the Lower Cretaceous all the way to very young copal. Due to the vast number of inclusions it contains, Baltic amber, which is ca. 40 million years old, is an excellent indirect base for research on evolution and relationships among many groups of invertebrates from the early Cretaceous to contemporary fauna. Many important discoveries were made thanks to the intensification of surveys and the ever-growing number of researchers who study contemporary and fossil fauna. A new order of insects (Mantophasmatodea) has been described, as well as many families, orders and species in very many groups of invertebrates which were unknown to science before. Evidence was found for the relationship of Baltic amber fauna with the fauna of tropical and subtropical areas, as well as for the dissimilarity of contemporary fauna and its Eocene counterpart at the species level (no common species). In spite of the as yet unsuccessful attempts to obtain DNA from animals entrapped in fossil resins, it seems almost a certainty that the development of research methods and new molecular techniques will soon provide us with access to this incredible wealth of genetic data. If and when this happens, both inclusion collections and research will take on a new value which cannot be overestimated. Były to z reguły wielkie obiekty o skomplikowanej konstrukcji i wymyślnych technikach realizacyjnych, niemających nic wspólnego z biżuterią, a nawet z szeroko pojętym złotnictwem. Surowe przepisy cechowe zakazywały łączenia bursztynu z metalami szlachetnymi, nawet wtedy gdy mogłoby to ulepszyć konstrukcję i korzystnie wpłynąć na wygląd dzieł. Zapewnienie artystom-bursztynnikom zaopatrzenia w odpowiedniej klasy bursztyn było w centrum uwagi władz Prus Książęcych i wielkich miast – Gdańska i Królewca. Dziś, kiedy znane zasoby bursztynu i możliwości techniczne jego wydobycia powiększyły się wielokrotnie, władze polityczne trzech krajów dysponujących lwią częścią zasobów: Rosji, Polski i Ukrainy utrudniają dostęp do złóż i monopolizują obrót wydobytym surowcem. However, the state is inept in managing it, which is reflected by the average of 3 tonnes of legitimately extracted material. The illegal extraction and smuggling (mainly to Poland) is at least 10 times greater. Wiesław Gierłowski In the modern era, when artistic amber handicraft reached the highest prestige in society, figurative sculpture was of the greatest importance, which in the late 17th century lead to the development of diverse techniques of artistic amber working. This in turn provided the conditions for the development of amber handicraft as a valued art form which was typical of the times. Modern-era amber pieces were commissioned by sovereigns as diplomatic gifts or were crafted for other employers from the highest echelons of society. These pieces were usually very large objects with complex structures made with the use of sophisticated techniques, which had nothing to do with jewellery, or even with broadly-understood goldsmithing. Strict guild regulations banned the combination of amber with precious metals, even if this were to enhance the structure of the works and improve their appearance. Providing amber artists with the right quality amber was very much in the centre of attention of the authorities of Ducal Prussia and the great cities of Gdańsk and Königsberg. Today, when the known amber resources and the technological capabilities of amber extraction have grown manifold, the political authorities of the three countries with the lion’s share of the resources: Russia, Poland and Ukraine, are hindering access to the deposits and monopolising the trade of the extracted raw material. Export regulations in Russia have led to high quality raw amber being sold almost exclusively to Hong-Kong, Taiwan and Japan at €1,300–1,500 per kilogram, while the companies associated with the state-owned Kaliningrad Amber Industrial Complex (Wikwol, Pajurio Gintaras and Tairus) which supply the European market, receive Bieda szyby na Sambii koło portu lotniczego w Kaliningradzie “Poor man’s shafts” in Sambia near Kaliningrad Airport Szyb z widoczną niebieską ziemią na płytkim złożu Muromskim Shaft with visible blue earth in the shallow Muromskoye Deposit W Polsce dysponującej zasobami szacowanymi przez Państwowy Instytut Geologiczny na 902.000 ton wydobywa się ilości śladowe. In Poland, which according to the State Geological Institute, has resources estimated at 902,000 tonnes, only trace amounts are extracted. Apart from the social depreciation of the industry from a courtly art form to mass souvenir production, the insufficient supply has led to measurable economic consequences: – makes it easy for mine workers to steal the best quality output (it is easy to sell the stolen amber) – leads to mass illegal extraction (in Sambia, Volyhn, the Vistula River Delta), which given the avoidance of environmental protection requirements, lease fees and taxes makes for lethal competition for legitimate mines – discourages investment in amber extraction and working due to the unavoidable involvement with the crime world and the threat of unprofitability due to the activity of the “grey economy” develops various forms of smuggling: from the individual practices (Kalinigrad – Pomerania, Wolyhn – Lublin Region) to mafia-organised mass smuggling to the Far East and the USA makes it easier to market copal and synthetic resin forgeries. Obie zorganizowano we współpracy z Niemieckim Instytutem Paleontologii. Nasze bogate doświadczenie i wysoka jakość umożliwiają nam oferowanie usług nawet Królowej Belgii, Cesarzowi Japoniii i wielu innym głowom państw. In accordance with the programme, the Art Centre of Baltic Amber was set up. One of the objects of Art Centre of Baltic Amber is to present the processing of amber. We organise amber processing lessons for students and visitors from different towns of Lithuania and all the world. We show this old profession at fairs in Vilnius. In this centre we organise artist exhibitions. Lectures, seminars are read by well known Lithuanian scientists and academics (such as Vilnius University Rector Adomas Butrimas and ethnologist Grazina Kadzyte). Various projects about amber are organised here. Such exhibitions as Dominican Amber and World Amber were a success here. Both were organised in partnership with the Germany Palaeontology Institute. Another gallery, The Cross Mountain, was opened later. Its visitors can learn more about the phenomenon of Cross Mountain and get a better understanding of the Catholic mentality of the Lithuanian people. It is of great importance for us to show amber to everyone, we are very pleased that every year we have thousands of tourists from France, Belgium, Great Britain, USA, Russia, Italy, Spain, Poland, Canada, Israel, Japan and many other countries. But we think it is very essential to present Baltic amber in other countries as well. To this end we had amber exhibitions in Reykjavik, Iceland; Ottawa, Canada; Chicago, USA; and at the Vittoriano Museum in Rome, Italy. Our rich experience and high quality let us offer our service even to the Queen of Belgium, the Emperor of Japan and many other heads of state. Last year we put our experience to our new book called The Mysterious Amber World and the film Baltic Amber on DVD. Our intense activity lets us spread the beauty of amber all around the world. Aktualności bursztynowe z Polski Amber news from Poland Barbara Kosmowska-Ceranowicz Barbara Kosmowska-Ceranowicz W ostatnich kilku latach w Polsce miała miejsce wyraźna intensyfikacja działań związanych z istotnymi zagadnieniami dotyczącymi bursztynnictwa i bursztynologii. Over the last few years, Poland has seen a clear intensification of efforts related to important issues concerning both the amber business and amber science. This is due to the continuation and popularisation of research that has been going on for years, important anniversaries that took place in 2008, numerous amber exhibitions organised by museums, the activity of societies, especially the International Amber Association, as well as efforts aiming to develop both the market and raw amber prospecting. Ostatnio do grona wymienionych miast, choć jeszcze bez wyraźnego kierunku specjalizacji, dołącza Elbląg – między innymi współorganizator „Mistrzostw Świata w Poławianiu Bursztynu”. Piśmiennictwo polskie dotyczące bursztynu (aktualnie w opracowaniu Działu Bursztynu MZ PAN) wykazuje z roku na rok wzrastającą liczbę publikacji. Amber research is conducted in many centres, primarily in Warsaw, where it is dedicated to deposits, fossil resins, botanical and zoological inclusions, as well as to conservation for the purposes of archaeology and museums, Gdańsk – with focus on zoological inclusions, amber identification, amber imitations and conservation, Cracow – which deals with zoological inclusions, Katowice – zoological inclusions and amber properties. Recently the above cities have been joined by Elbląg and although it has yet to have a clear speciality, its activities include the organisation of the World Amber Fishing Championships. The number of Polish scientific papers on amber (currently under compilation at the Amber Department at the Museum of the Earth of the Polish Academy of Sciences (PAN) is growing year by year. W roku 2008 dla Ministerstwa Środowiska powstało opracowanie o perspektywach wykorzystania polskich zasobów bursztynu pt. „Prognozy zasobowe bursztynu w Polsce”. Aktualnie rozpoczynający się projekt ba- In 2008, a study was compiled for the Polish Ministry of the Environment on the prospects of utilising Poland’s amber resources entitled Forecasts of Amber Resources in Poland. It became the basis for a joint council of amber businesspeople and amber deposit researchers to discuss the possibilities of becoming independent from exclusive supplies of raw amber from abroad; the council was called in February 2009 by Dr. Henryk Jacek Jezierski, Undersecretary of State at the Ministry of the Environment, and Poland’s Chief Geologist. The research project on the 25 REGIONAL Amber ne ws Identification of the Geological and Deposit Conditions of Amber Localities in Poland, which has recently begun, is a good harbinger for the breaking of the stagnation in raw amber prospecting, which has been the case for some time. In 2008, we have had anniversary conferences, which as always showcased the crop of research and often brought interesting syntheses as well. The 60th anniversary of the Polish Academy of Sciences’ (PAN) Museum of the Earth in Warsaw was commemorated with a volume of The Works of the Museum of the Earth dedicated to amber research (49, 2008, 142 pages). The 10th anniversary of the University of Gdańsk’s Museum of Amber Inclusions was celebrated with a two-day (5–6 December 2008) scientific conference on The Role of Gdańsk in Amber Inclusion Research and a Special Issue of Bursztynisko (31, 2008, 72 pages). The conference was also part of the annual series of meetings: the Symposium of the Fossil Insect Section of the Polish Entomological Society (PTE) and the 23rd Meeting of Amber Researchers at the Museum of the Earth. The papers of the 15th Seminar at the Gdańsk Amberif Fair (15 March 2008) on Organic Inclusions and the Discoveries of Amber and other European Fossil Resins were, as always, published in the Amberif 2008 booklet. (Museum of the Earth/Scientific Conferences / Abstracts 25, 2008, 36 pages). The results of the seminars held at the Fair were finally edited and thanks to our partnership with the Gdańsk International Fair Co. (MTG) will be published in the second volume of Amber – Views, Opinions. The 50th anniversary of jewellery design at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Łódź was highlighted by the publication of the Złote Kreacje (Gold Creations) exhibition catalogue (2008, 126 pages). 10-lecie Muzeum Inkluzji w Bursztynie Uniwersytetu Gdańskiego, uczczono konferencją naukową „Rola Gdańska w badaniach inkluzji bursztynowych” i wydaniem numeru specjalnego Bursztyniska The 10th anniversary of the University of Gdańsk’s Museum of Amber Inclusions was celebrated with scientific conference on The Role of Gdańsk in Amber Inclusion Research and a Special Issue of Bursztynisko W 2008 roku odbyły się konferencje jubileuszowe, które jak zwykle ukazały plon badań, a nierzadko przyniosły ciekawe ich syntezy. 60-lecie Muzeum Ziemi PAN w Warszawie uczczone zostało tomem Prac Muzeum Ziemi poświęconym badaniom nad bursztynem (49, 2008, ss.142). 10-lecie Muzeum Inkluzji w Bursztynie Uniwersytetu Gdańskiego, uczczono dwudniową (5–6.12.2008) konferencją naukową „Rola Gdańska w badaniach inkluzji bur- The last two years have seen impressive European Amber Celebration in Wieluń organised by the Museum of the Wieluń Region, the Polish Amber Road Association and the local authorities lead by the Deputy Starost. The event was substantially supported with two seminars. We have also seen valuable individual initiatives, such as G. Gierłowska’s largest collection of amber imitations in the world, which for years has been the touchstone for the Amber Laboratory’s work. It has become a discussion forum for the researchers of amber’s properties, without which the Gdańsk Fair would be practically unimaginable. Rośnie też (choć wolno) świadomość, nawiązująca do tradycji sprzed setek lat. 27 REGIONAL Amber ne ws the Amberif landscape. For several years now, the Museum, just as the Museum of the Earth’s Amber Department, has also been a regular at the Warsaw Gold Silver Time Fair as part of the Museums at the Fair series, in the form of monographic amber exhibitions. AKTUALNOŚCI BURSZTYNOWE regionALNE Piętnaste seminarium prowadzone w ramach gdańskich targów Amberif 2008 „Inkluzje organiczne oraz znaleziska bursztynu i innych żywic kopalnych Europy” zostało opublikowane tradycyjnie w zeszycie. The papers of the 15th Seminar at the Gdańsk Amberif Fair on Organic Inclusionsand the Discoveries of Amber and other European Fossil Resins were, as always, published in the Amberif 2008 booklet The activities of recent years have become more and more important not only for the development of the amber industry in Poland, but also for its increased promotion of “amber tourism.” We have also seen a rise (albeit slow) in the awareness of a tradition going back hundreds of years ago. We are beginning to understand that the Ripa succini (the Vistula Sandbar and the neighbouring areas on the southern Baltic coast) remains an important deposit and accumulation area for more and more valuable amber, which is more abundant in Poland than any other jewellery stone. Aktualności bursztynowe z Rosji Amber news from Russia Aleksandr Krylov Alexandr Krylov Wśród rosyjskich wydarzeń bursztynowych roku 2008 przede wszystkim należy wymienić projekt firmy AMBER HOUSE pod nazwą „Słońce w prezencie”. Among the “amber” events in Russia 2008 first of all one should mention AMBER HOUSE company project “Sun as a Present”. “Sun as a Present” is the first business project in Russia aimed at charity exceptionally. The Company collected and presented amber items made by the best amber masters in Russia. All of these items are exclusive, some of them – unique. These artworks are presented in the catalogue and at the Gallery ”Amber House” in SaintPetersburg on Nevskiy prospect, where one can admire and buy them. Muzeum Bursztynu w Kaliningradzie zaprezentowało szereg bardzo interesujących ekspozycji; były to: „60-lecie Kombinatu Bursztynowego”; „Złoto Bałtyku” (ze zbiorów muzealnych) The Company tried to reach few targets: from one side, to acquaint people with the first-class amber items, popularizing and developing amber art, from the other side, to help masters in selling their artworks. But the main point is that all profit from product sale is forwarded to medical care for children with cancer diseases. It is very symbolic that the amber, this magic stone which is valued also for its healing power since ancient time brings not only an esthetic pleasure to its owner, but also practically beneficial – workable relief to seriously ill children. Of course, it is rather difficult to develop charity projects in time of financial crisis, but AMBER HOUSE keeps on his activity and I do hope it will be successful. 2008 was rich with exhibitions. Kaliningrad Amber museum presented a number of very interesting exhibitions: “60th anniversary of Amber industrial complex”; “Baltic gold” (from museum funds) – in Tsaritsino museum (Moscow), State art museum (Kazan’, Tatarstan); “Amber spring” – exhibition from the collection of Kaliningrad amber companies; personal exhibition “Worlds of Andrey Kavetsky”; “Union of Earth and Water” – from the collection of Armory Museum (Moscow); “Sun stone” – in the Museum of applied art and design (Riga, Latvia); pres- AKTUALNOŚCI BURSZTYNOWE regionALNE – w muzeum w Carycynie (Moskwa), Państwowym Muzeum Sztuki w Kazaniu w Tatarstanie; „Bursztynowa Wiosna” – wystawa z kolekcji kaliningradzkich firm bursztynniczych, autorska wystawa „Światy Andrieja Kaweckiego”; „Związek Ziemi i Wody” – z kolekcji moskiewskiej Izby Zbrojnej; “Słoneczny kamień” – w Muzeum Sztuki Użytkowej i Projektowania (Ryga, Łotwa); wystawa przeglądowa najlepszych bursztynników kaliningradzkich „Bursztynowa Plaża Rosji” w Cannes (Francja), i in. Opublikował on również obszerny album pt. 28 REGIONAL Amber ne ws AKTUALNOŚCI BURSZTYNOWE regionALNE REGIONAL Amber ne ws entation exhibition of Kaliningrad best amber masters “Amber beach of Russia” in Cannes (France) and others – 19 all in all. A number of bookshops and publishing houses showed interest in this album. We should pay attention to the fact that practically no new publications were presented during the last years. The only edition one can find is devoted to the revival of the Amber Room. This deteriorates the developing of the amber art while giving very rough idea of what it really is. This direction must be worked on much harder. “Zsarskoselskaya yantarnaya masterskaya” held two exhibitions – artworks made by the masters of the workshop, in the Art museum (Aachen, Germany) and “Amber icons” in Bari (Italy). Among the most significant artworks one can mention big amber picture “Russia” made by A. Wśród nich dla 150–160 produkcja wyrobów była głównym nurtem działalności. Liczbę osób związanych z branżą bursztynową eksperci administracji Obwodu określają na 20 tys. Jednak według ocen ekspertów niezależnych w biznesie bursztynowym regionu obecnie działa nie więcej niż 200 firm i przedsiębiorców, a ogólna liczba zatrudnionych nie przekracza 3 tys. osób. Największe firmy branży zostały połączone w trzy stowarzyszenia zawodowe: Bursztynowy Sojusz (24 firmy), Bursztynowy Alians (15), Stowarzyszenie Rzemiosł Ludowych (4). One próbują negocjować warunki dostaw surowca z Kombinatu oraz koordynować działania wobec władz regionalnych. Kaliningradzki Kombinat Bursztynu pracuje w składzie dwu spółek akcyjnych (z 100% kapitałem państwowym) – kopalni oraz produkcji jubilerskiej (343 i 208 pracowników w 2007 r.). W chwili wprowadzenia w Kombinacie zarządu zewnętrznego w 2003 r. liczba zatrudnionych wynosiła 1350 osób. 370 firms and individual businessmen who make and sell amber goods were registered in the region in the beginning of 2009. Amber jewelry manufacturing is the primary activity for 150–160 of them. The officials of the regional government estimate the number of the workers involved in the amber industry at 20,000 persons. However, in the opinion of independent experts there are in fact no more than 200 operating firms and no more than 3,000 persons employed in the region’s amber business today. The large firms are incorporated in three public organizations: the Amber Union (24 firms), the Amber Alliance (15) and the Association of Homecrafts (4). They try to coordinate their requirements and actions towards both the supplier of raw material (the Factory), and to the regional authorities. The Kaliningrad Amber Factory consists of two joint-stock companies (100% property of the state) – an open-cast mine and jeweller manufacture (343 and 208 employees in 2007; whereas during the moment of introduction of external management in 2003, the Factory employed 1,350 persons). Ilość nielegalnie pozyskanego bursztynu jest nieznaczna. Handel surowcem i wyrobami bursztynowymi Od 10. października 2008 r. Kombinat prowadzi sprzedaż surowca zgodnie z nowym regulaminem. Zgodnie z obliczeniami ekspertów rządu Obwodu w 2007 r. w sumie sprzedano surowca i wyrobów bursztynowych na około 1,1 mld rubli (30 mln € zgodnie z ówczesnym kursem). W 2008 r. sprzedaż wzrosła o 30%. W pierwszym kwartale 2009 r. sprzedaż wyrobów spadła o 20–30%, a wg samych producentów – o 30–40%. 30 REGIONAL Amber ne ws Service stopped the operation of two self-made mines, dug by a dredge, near the settlement Bezymyanka. Gathering of amber also still takes place in the area where the pulp from the open-cast mine is dumped to the sea; in area of the settlement Sinyavino private persons extract amber, washing away the soil with pumps. The volume of illegally extracted amber is insignificant. Trade in raw material and amber goods Since October 10th, 2008 the Factory has been selling raw amber according to the new rules: affiliated companies and large dealers (which buy more than € 0.55 million worth of raw material a year) receive a discount of up to 20%. All other entities, upon the purchase of amber of large fractions (2nd and 3rd class), are obliged to buy simultaneously amber of small fractions (4th and 5th class). For those who refuse to purchase “crumbs”, an additional premium of up to 20 % is charged in addition to the wholesale price for large fractions. Therefore, the market price of the raw material is approximately 40 % higher for the majority of the Kaliningrad manufacturers, who usually buy no more than 100 kg of amber a month, than for the commercial entities connected with the Factory. The plans of the regional government to create an Amber commodity exchange were not realized. The last time wholesale prices for amber rose significantly was in the spring of 2008 (40% on average) and since then they have not changed. The export prices, according to a release from the Factory’s press service, are only 10% higher than domestic prices. However, in view of VAT refund and the 20% discount for wholesale distributors, the export prices are significantly lower than those for domestic purchasers. This has led to unequal conditions for the Kaliningrad manufacturers. The recommendation by the regional government that the Factory should sell at least 20% of its raw material to local enterprises, issued in June 2008, has not been carried out. As a result, on October 12th, 2008 Governor G. Boos put forward a motion that the central government in Moscow establish an export duty on raw amber at the rate of 25%. According to the regional government, in 2007 the sale of raw amber and amber goods totaled 1.1 billion rubles (€30 million at the exchange rate of the time); in 2008 sales grew by 30%. 36 REGIONAL Amber ne ws Communes and the Pomeranian Regional Tourist Organisation, we are organising the 1st Forum of the Cities of the Amber Route and the meeting of the World Amber Council, which will be accompanied by a seminar open to the public. Czynniki zewnętrzne, a szczególnie w przypadku odkryć archeologicznych: długotrwałe zaleganie w ziemi na niewielkich głębokościach, ponad poziomem wód gruntowych powodują procesy wietrzenia. Baltic amber aka succinite, has been used by humankind since ca. 15,000 years BCE, with sun-, fire- or gold-coloured amber artefacts being beautiful, but impermanent. External factors, especially in the case of archaeological finds: long-term deposition in the ground at shallow depths, above the level of ground water, lead to weathering processes. For this reason many historical artefacts require immediate conservation intervention. The conservation process takes place in stages which are the same for all amber objects: – Cleaning – removal of dirt which covers the object or its fragment. – Impregnation – saturation with preparations which result in the consolidation of a cracked structure. – Gluing – joining damaged fragments together. – Filling in missing fragments – in order to recreate the full appearance of the object. – Finishing works – covering the object’s surface with a substance which protects it from the impact of external factors. W takiej sytuacji wydobycie ich nastręcza The degree to which an artefact is preserved determines the course of action. Conservation of amber objects which are in relatively good condition is limited to the cleaning of their surface on site and the careful washing in the laboratory. The next step is to secure the surface and provide the amber objects with appropriate storage conditions. However, it is more often the case that archaeological artefacts are in poor or very poor condition. In such cases their excavation causes many problems. In cases when Przegląd metod używanych do konsewacji zabytków archeologicznych, oparty na literaturze, uzmysławia potrzebę zastosowania czynności zabezpieczających bursztyn w terenie. W wielu sytuacjach jest to jedyna możliwość zachowania pierwotnego wyglądu. Pozwoli to na znacznie poszerzenie dalszych (laboratoryjnych) prac nad pełnym opisem i interpretacją zabytków. A conservator should be consulted in such cases. A review of the methods used to conserve archaeological artefacts, based on specialist literature, makes it clear that conservation procedures which preserve amber artefacts on site need to be used. In many cases, this is the only way to preserve their original appearance. This will enable a significant broadening of further work (in the laboratory) on the full description and interpretation of the artefacts. Szkatuła Gottfrieda Turaua wykonana w Gdańsku r. 1705 Coffer by Gottfried Turau made in Gdańsk in 1705 SEMINARIUM 42 SEMINAR SEMINARIUM 43 SEMINAR Pogodzenie celu trwałości i efektownego wyglądu obiektów, według oryginalnego zamysłu autora, z zasadą minimum ingerencji w materię dzieł jest zadaniem bardzo trudnym. Zawarta w roku 1972 w Paryżu – Międzynarodowa konwencja w sprawie ochrony światowego dziedzictwa kulturalnego i naturalnego stała się prawem zobowiązującym państwa do respektowania zasad wcześniej ustalonych w „Kartach”. Dzieła z tej kategorii w większości pozostają w dwóch kolekcjach muzealnych: – Muzeum Zamkowego w Malborku, podległego Ministerstwu Kultury i Dziedzictwa Narodowego – 25 obiektów – Muzeum Historycznego Miasta Gdańska, oddział Muzeum Bursztynu – 20 obiektów. The Principle of minimum intervention in historical artefacts versus the problem of their durability and appearance Wiesław Gierłowski The Athens Charter of 1931 and the Venice Charter of 1964, which formulated the basic premises of the preservation of historical monuments in their actual diachronic accumulation without any new additions, only allowed treatment which would restore durability and usability, without modern improvements or embellishments. The international convention on the preservation of the world cultural and natural heritage signed in Paris in 1972 became a law which obliged states to respect the principles determined earlier in these Charters. The following Lausanne Convention of 1990 was passed not on the premises of the protection of the cultural environment but on the premise of human rights, namely the rights of the long-deceased artists to the sanctity of their work. These substantive principles, confirmed by international law, are respected with special diligence in the planning and carrying out of conservation work on the few modern-era artefacts of amber sculpture and decorative art in Poland. These works are mostly kept in two museum collection: – The Castle Museum in Malbork, under the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage – 25 pieces – The Amber Museum branch of the Gdańsk History Museum – 20 pieces. Additionally, conservation assignments appear when artefacts are lent from abroad for a limited period of time in return for bringing them to a condition which would make their permanent exhibiting possible. Wszędzie wystąpiły problemy wytrzymałości konstrukcji, odnowienia różnorodnych detali, uzupełnienia brakujących elementów w tym fragmentów rzeźb figuralnych, problemy scalenia barwnego i kompozycyjnego i wyboru spoiw – mocnych lecz odwracalnych. Gierłowska Ołtarzyk bursztynowy i szkatuła Mauchera ze zbiorów Muzeum Zamkowego w Malborku Amber altar and coffer by Christof Maucher from the collection of the Castle Museum in Malbork, fot. G. Gierłowska Reconciling the goals of the artefacts’ durability and attractive appearance, according to the artist’s original concept, with the principle of minimum intervention into the matter of the works, is a very difficult task. I will discuss it on the example of the three most important modern-era artefact conservation assignments carried out over 30 years by various Polish conservators. The earliest example from 1967–69 is the grand cabinet of King Augustus II the Strong from the Grünes Gewölbe collection. The next examples include the conservation of the magnificent coffer by Christoph Maucher (which had already been conserved twice after its purchase) and the altar from the collection of the Castle Museum in Malbork performed in the 1990s. Each time there were problems with the durability of the structure, renovation of diverse details, filling in missing elements including fragments of figurative sculptures; problems related to colour and compositional blending and the choice of binders – strong, but reversible. In Maucher’s coffer there is still the problem of preserving or removing elements added during 19th century conservation work. All the objects I have selected as examples are available for viewing as part of the current exhibitions in Dresden and Malbork. 44 Wydawca/Publisher: Biuro Prezydenta ds.
