PASSING THE TEST
“Test” is a four-letter word. Spelling
tests, driving tests, SATs, all bring a knot
to the stomach. Tests are something we
would rather forgo, but also something we
must undergo. Lent. Too, is a four-letter
word and is also a kind of test, for the only
way to Easter is to pass through Lent.
Today’s reading from Deuteronomy commends Israel for its
faith in the God who saves. No matter the tribulation, Israel’s
faith enables it to persevere. This faith/test theme also appears
in the reading from Romans. Paul boldly asserts that faith in
Christ will see the believer through any trial.
The Gospel passage makes it clear that even Jesus was
tested. It describes a test, a struggle between good and evil,
that dramatically demonstrates Jesus’ faith in the power of
God’s life in him. This power enables him to overcome temptation. This power is with all of us who celebrate the test of
Lent, a power enabling us to pass with flying colors.

THE FEAST OF THE CHAIR OF ST. PETER
On February 22nd, we will celebrate the festivity of the Chair
of St. Peter. This signifies the primacy of Peter and the authority and power given to him by Jesus. Pope John Paul II selected this day as a day of indulgence at St. Joseph Basilica.
We encourage parishioners to take advantage of this special
privilege by offering these indulgences, plenary or partial, not
only for the souls in purgatory but also for the living. Indulgences can be obtained by visiting St. Joseph Basilica, praying
for the intention of our Holy Father and receiving Holy Communion (confession if necessary).

LENTEN REFLECTIONS
With imposition of ashes, last Wednesday, we began our pilgrimage of forty days to the holy mountain of the resurrection
of Jesus Christ on Easter Sunday. Traditionally these days are
associated with prayers, fasting and alms giving. These forty
days are connected with the desert where Jesus encountered
many temptations before he began his public ministry. Each
human life resembles the experience of the desert with difficulties, temptations, disappointments, etc.
The Lenten Season offers us a new opportunity to reflect on
our life in Christ and focus our attention upon the things that
really matter in life. In the “Year of Faith” we want to increase
the participation in Sunday and week day Masses.
We may take advantage of many devotional practices that we
offer during this time of the year such as, Stations of the Cross,
Gorzkie Zale and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. Each
one of us is challenged to make a personal choice and renew
our life of faith.
COLLECTION FOR THE CHURCH IN LATIN AMERICA
We will take up the Collection for the Church in Latin America next week. Latin American Catholics are often characterized by their warm, humble and passionate hearts. They have
been blessed by a rich culture as well as natural resources.
However, in these times of economic struggle, poverty and violence are still major obstacles in their daily lives. Your support
helps give hope to people in the region, especially the youth
who seek to live faith. It is more important than ever that we
support the Church in Latin America and the Caribbean. Please
be generous in next week’s collection. Please refer to enclosed
flyer for more information.
WE ARE BLESSED WITH GOOD PARISHIONERS!!
Last weekend’s snowstorm has been a problem for all of us
especially for the parish. It was extremely difficult to keep up
with the plowing, sanding, spreading salt and other safety precautions of the church and school parking lots with our limited
resources
We are most grateful to Father Gregory, Eugene, Wieszek
and Marek Rudnicki, and John Szymczak who worked tirelessly for many hours to assist us in this effort. We are grateful
to our parishioner, Mr. Darek Ochocki who brought in his
heavy equipment (free of charge) during this critical time.

PARTNERS IN CHARITY
The Annual Partners in Charity Appeal is scheduled for the
weekend of March 2 & 3 in all the parishes of the Diocese of
Worcester. This appeal supports 28 vital programs in our Diocese. The quota for our parish is the same as last year $25,000.
The chair-persons for our parish are Betty Sabaj and Carolyn
Swierzbin. We gratefully appreciate their dedication and their
gift of time to oversee this fundraising undertaking. Your gift
to the appeal this year will provide assistance for the poor, the
sick, the young, the aged, the disabled, families in crisis and

ANNUAL SAINT JOSPEH SCHOOL AUCTION
SAVE THE DATE-We will hold our Annual Auction and
Beer/Wine Tasting with a Western Theme on April 27th at 200
Sportsman Club beginning at 5:00pm. We are planning a Western styled menu and decorations and invite all parishioners to
this important annual event.

ST. JOSEPH POLISH WOMEN’S CLUB
St. Joseph Polish Women’s Club-monthly meeting will be
held on Tues., Feb. 26th at 7:00pm in the school cafeteria.
After the business meeting, there will be a presentation on
the art of wine making and the benefits of dark chocolate, followed by tasting of wine and chocolate. The hostesses for the

PIERWSZA NIEDZIELA WIELKIEGO POSTU

„Ale cóż mówi: Słowo to jest blisko ciebie, na twoich ustach i w sercu
twoim. Ale jest to słowo wiary, którą głosimy.” (Rz 10, 8)
ZDAĆ EGZAMIN
„Abyśmy doszli do paschy wieczystej...”
„Doszli”, bo jesteśmy w drodze. Zmiana
jest zapisana w naszej ludzkiej naturze.
Składając dziś Ofiarę eucharystyczną,
„uroczyście rozpoczynamy zbawienny dla
nas okres Wielkiego Postu”. Czas pokuty
to znaczy uczenia się, jakich wyborów
dokonywać w życiu. Co przyjąć, a co odrzucić, aby
„postępować w rozumieniu tajemnicy Chrystusa”. On sam, w
czasie kuszenia na pustyni, w swoich wyborach karmił się
Bożym słowem. Możemy wierzyć, że w czasie tego Wielkiego
Postu Jego słowo będzie „blisko nas”, aby nas prowadzić.
Dzisiejsza druga kolekta jest przeznaczona na pokrycie kosztów utrzymania i energii.
Druga kolekta w następną niedzielę będzie przeznaczona na pomoc Kościołowi w Ameryce Łacińskiej.

Gorzkie Żale – w każdą niedzielę o godz. 15:00
Droga Krzyżowa – w piątki o godz. 13: 30 po angielsku wraz z
uczniami Szkoły św. Józefa, oraz o godz. 19: 00 po polsku.
Spowiedź – codziennie po ostatniej Mszy porannej, we wtorki w
godzinach od 19: 00 do 20: 00, w soboty o godz. 15:00.
Msze dla dzieci – W każdą niedzielę o godz. 9: 30. Zapraszamy na nie
wszystkie rodziny z dziećmi. Jak co roku, zachęcamy dzieci do
przeżywania Wielkiego Postu poprzez czynienie dobrych uczynków?
Przy wejściach do Kościoła będą znajdowały się specjalne kartki, na
których dzieci będą zapisywały swoje dobre uczynki, a następnie
przynosiły je do ołtarza w trakcie precesji z darami.
ŚWIĘTO KATEDRY ŚW. PIOTRA
W piątek 22 lutego obchodzimy Święto Katedry św. Piotra. Dzień
ten przypomina nam o pierwszeństwie św. Piotra oraz o mocy i
władzy, jaką został obdarzony prze Jezusa on i jego następcy. Od
kiedy nasz kościół został podniesiony przez Papieża do rangi Bazyliki,
również i my możemy cieszyć sie przywilejami związanymi z władzą
Piotrową. Każdy, kto w tym dniu nawiedzi naszą Bazylikę może
otrzymać odpust zupełny lub cząstkowy, jeśli jest w stanie łaski,
odmówi modlitwę i intencji Ojca św. Oraz przyjmie Komunię św.
REFLEKSJA WIELKOPOSTNA
Wraz z posypaniem głów popiołem w ubiegła środę, rozpoczęliśmy
naszą czterdziestodniową pielgrzymkę do świąt Zmartwychwstania
Jezusa Chrystusa. Tradycyjnie dni te są powiązane z modlitwą postem
i jałmużną. To również czas, w którym dołączamy do Jezusa
poszczącego na pustyni i zmagającego się z wieloma pokusami.
Każdy z nas również powinien udać się na pustynie, aby zmierzyć się
ze swoimi trudnościami, pokusami i rozczarowaniami.
Czas Wielkiego Postu daje nam nową możliwość zastanowienia się
nad naszym życiem w Chrystusie i skupia naszą uwagę na rzeczach,
które faktycznie w tym życiu są ważne. Może warto zastanowić sie,
przy okazji również „Roku Wiary” nad uczestnictwem w życiu
liturgicznym. Wiele nabożeństw wielkopostnych daje nam możliwość
zagłębienia sie bardziej w naszą duchowość i dokonania wyboru życia
w wierze.
ZBIÓRKA NA KOŚCIÓŁ W AMERYCE ŁACIŃSKIEJ
W przyszła niedzielę będziemy zbierali ofiary na pomoc Kościołowi
w Ameryce Łacińskiej. Cieszy się on wieloma bogactwami takimi jak
gorliwość, zaangażowanie czy, pokora. Posiada głęboką i różnobarwną
kulturę. Nie mniej jednak w czasach kryzysu ekonomicznego bieda i
związana z nią przemoc stanowi jeden z poważniejszych problemów a
jakimi musi sie on zmagać na co dzień. Wasza pomoc będzie
wparciem dla wiernych z tamtego regionu, szczególnie dla młodych,
którzy poszukują żywej wiary. Prosimy, zatem o hojność i otwartość
serca. Bóg Zapłać!
PODZIĘKOWANIE ZA POMOC
W ubiegłym tygodniu wszyscy musieliśmy zmagać się ze skutkami
śnieżycy. Jednak dzięki wytężonej pracy parafian dość szybko
uporaliśmy się w odśnieżeniem parkingu i chodników. Chcemy bardzo
serdecznie podziękować panom: Eugeniuszowi Rudnickiemu,
Wiesławowi Rudnickiemu, Markowi Rudnickiemu oraz Johnowi
Szymczak za wiele godzin spędzonych przy tej pracy. Szczególnie
chcemy wyrazić naszą wdzięczność panu Dariuszowi Ochockiemu,
który poświęcił zarówno swój czas, ale również wykorzystał ciężki
sprzęt do usuwania śniegu z parkingów. Bóg Wam Zapłać za pomoc i
poświęcenie!

Zajęcia katechetyczne w poniedziałki, jak zwykle o godz. 17:30.
Bierzmowanie. Najbliższe spotkanie 24 lutego, o godz. 8:30.
PARTNERS IN CHARITY
Tegoroczna edycja Diecezjalnej akcji Parters in Charity rozpoczyna
się w weekend 2-3 marca. Z zebranych funduszy prowadzonych jest
28 programów charytatywnych w diecezji, obejmujących pomoc
biednym, chorym, rodziną w trudnej sytuacji, osobom starszym itp. W
akcji uczestniczą wszystkie parafie i każda z nich jest proszona o
konkretną sumę. Naszą parafię poproszono o 25 tyś. Dolarów – tak jak
w ubiegłym roku.

Przypomnienie – zachęcamy wszystkich parafian do prenumeraty,
bądź odnowy prenumeraty katolickiego tygodnika Catholic Free Press.
W Roku Wiary warto zatroszczyć się by znalazło się w naszych
domach to katolickie źródło informacji. Warto być na bieżąco z
lokalnymi, diecezjalnymi, narodowymi i ogólnoświatowymi
zagadnieniami, którymi żyje Kościół. Dla łatwiejszej prenumeraty
odpowiednie koperty znajdują się w rodzinnych pakietach.

ZNACZENIE WIELKIEGO POSTU c.d.
Czyż to jest post, jaki Ja uznaję, dzień, w którym się człowiek
umartwia? Czy zwieszanie głowy jak sitowie i użycie woru z popiołem
za posłanie – czyż to nazwiesz postem i dniem miłym Panu?” (Iz 58, 4
-5). O jaki post więc chodzi? – „Czyż nie jest raczej ten post, który
wybieram: rozerwać kajdany zła, rozwiązać więzy niewoli, wypuścić
wolno uciśnionych i wszelkie jarzmo połamać; dzielić swój chleb z
głodnym, wprowadzić w dom biednych tułaczy, nagiego, którego
ujrzysz, przyodziać i nie odwrócić się od współziomków” (Iz 58, 6-7).
Życie i działalność Jezusa pozwalają nam lepiej zrozumieć znaczenie
autentycznego postu. Na początku działalności publicznej Jezus został
wyprowadzony przez Ducha na pustynię i tam pościł przez
czterdzieści dni. Źródłem Jezusowego pragnienia postu oraz
gwarancją, że nie było to zwykłe „ćwiczenie fizyczne” jest
przynaglenie Ducha Świętego. Kuszony przez diabła, by zrezygnował
z postu i zamienił kamienie w chleb, Jezus gromi go, mówiąc: „Nie
samym chlebem żyje człowiek, lecz każdym słowem, które pochodzi z
ust Bożych” (Mt 4,4). Autentyczny post chrześcijański jest
wymownym przypomnieniem, że są w życiu rzeczy ważniejsze niż
pożywienie. Takie przypomnienie może pomóc w zwróceniu naszej
myśli ku Bogu. Post pomaga nam uświadomić sobie obecność Boga w
otaczającym nas świecie. Otwiera też nasze serca i oczy na braci
cierpiących głód i niedostatek. W Ewangelii św. Mateusza, podczas
kazania na górze Jezus mówi o poście w tym samym kontekście, co o
jałmużnie i modlitwie. Przestrzega, by nie stał się on praktyką czysto
zewnętrzną. Nie pościmy po to, by zrobić wrażenie na ludziach. Post
nie powinien być też powodem do smutku i przygnębienia. Ma to być
okazja do radości. Autentyczny post otwiera na przyjęcie miłosierdzia
Bożego. Bóg Ojciec użycza swoich darów tym, którzy poszczą
czystym sercem z miłości do Niego. W związku z uzdrowieniem
opętanego chłopca, Jezus przypomina, iż post i modlitwa dają moc do
zdecydowanego odrzucenia szatana. Jeden z pisarzy nazwał post
„modlitwą ciała”. Katechizm przypomina, że bez nawrócenia serca,
czyny pokutne pozostają bezowocne i kłamliwe. Wykorzystajmy, więc
ten czas właściwie.
