Lenten Regulations
Ash Wednesday, the first day of the Lenten season, and Good Friday are days of Fast and Abstinence in the Catholic Church..
Abstinence from meat is to be observed by all Catholics 14
years old and older on Ash Wednesday and on all the Fridays of
Lent. When we FAST we may take only one full meal. Two
smaller meals are permitted, if necessary, to maintain strength
according to one’s needs; however, eating solid foods between
meals is not permitted. Catholic who are 18 yrs. of age but not
yet 59 are bound by the Fasting regulations on Ash Wednesday
and on Good Friday.
Blessed ashes will be distributed on Ash Wednesday, February 17th during the 7AM, and 8AM, Masses and during the
11AM, 4PM services and during the 6:30PM Polish Mass and
8PM Spanish Mass.
English Lenten Retreat
We will look forward to welcome Fr. Edmund Faliskie, a Redemptorist priest, from the Baltimore Province who will conduct
our parish Lenten Retreat.
All parishioners are invited to participate in the retreat that will
begin at the 5PM Mass on Saturday, February 20th and at the
8:30 AM Mass on Sunday, February 21st.
On Saturday, February 20th, the sacrament of the Anointing
of the Sick will be celebrated at the 5PM Mass. Please inform
your family and friends, especially those who are in ill-health,
about this opportunity to receive the Sacrament of the Sick.
Fr. Faliskie will also preach at the 8AM Mass during the week
of the retreat.
Evening services will take place on, Monday, Feb. 22nd
through Thursday, February 25 at 7pm in the church.
Everyone is invited to make a special effort to participate in
the Lenten Retreat so that you may nourish your faith and to
come to a better understanding of your relationship with the
Lord, Jesus.
Neighborhood Watch Meeting
A Neighborhood Watch meeting will take place on Tuesday,
February 16, 2010 at Woodbine School 3001 S. 50th Ave. The
meeting will begin at 6:30 PM. Everyone that has concerns
about the neighborhood is invited to attend the meeting.

Set up will be on Friday, March 19th from noon to 8:00 P.M.

HOMECOMING: CATHOLICS RENEWING THEIR FAITH
For those Catholics who were intrigued by the TV ads to learm
more about their faith, there will be an adult formation series in
Lent called HOMECOMING: CATHOLIC RENEWING THEIR
FAITH. This 5-week series will take place in 19 parishes around
the Archdiocese of Chicago. St. Frances of Rome, 1428 S. 59th
Ct. in Cicero, ILl will hold the formation series on Mondays from

Gospel : Luke 6:17,20-26
Jesus teaches the crowd the way to happiness.
Last Sunday we heard Jesus call Peter to be his
disciple. Jesus then travels with Peter and the other
disciples. Luke reports acts of healing (a person
with leprosy and a paralytic man) and the call of
Levi, the tax collector. Jesus also replies to questions from the Pharisees regarding fasting and the observance of
the Sabbath.
Today's gospel reading is the beginning of what is often called
the Sermon on the Plain. We find a parallel to this passage in Matthew 5:1-7,11 that is often called the Sermon on the Mount. As
these titles suggest, there are differences and similarities between
these gospel readings.
When spoken from the mountaintop in Matthew's Gospel, we
can't miss the impression that Jesus is speaking with the authority
and voice of God. The mountaintop is a symbol of closeness to
God. Those who ascend the mountain see God and speak for
God; recall the story of Moses and the Ten Commandments. As
Luke introduces the location of Jesus' teaching, Jesus teaches on
level ground, alongside the disciples and the crowd. Luke presents
Jesus' authority in a different light. He is God among us.
Another distinction found in Luke's version is the audience.
Luke's Sermon on the Plain is addressed to Jesus' disciples, although in the presence of the crowd; Matthew's Sermon on the
Mount is addressed to the crowd. In keeping with this style, the
Beatitudes in Luke's Gospel sound more personal than those in
Matthew's Gospel—Luke uses the article “you” whereas Matthew
uses “they” or “those.” There is also a difference in number: Matthew describes eight beatitudes; Luke presents just four, each of
which has a parallel warning. (We will continue to read from this
series of teachings next week on the seventh Sunday in Ordinary
Time. Because of the date of Easter this year, however, we will not
hear the reading from eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time in 2007.)
The form of the Beatitudes found in Luke's and Matthew's Gospel is not unique to Jesus. Beatitudes are found in the Old Testament, such as in the Psalms and in Wisdom literature. They are a
way to teach about who will find favor with God. The word blessed
in this context might be translated as “happy,” “fortunate,” or
“favored.”
As we listen to this Gospel, the Beatitudes jar our sensibilities.
Those who are poor, hungry, weeping, or persecuted are called
blessed. This is, indeed, a Gospel of reversals. Those often
thought to have been forgotten by God are called blessed. In the
list of “woes,” those whom we might ordinarily describe as blessed
by God are warned about their peril. Riches, possessions, laughter, reputation . . . these are not things that we can depend upon
as sources of eternal happiness. They not only fail to deliver on
their promise; our misplaced trust in them will lead to our demise.
The ultimate peril is in misidentifying the source of our eternal happiness.
The Beatitudes are often described as a framework for Christian
living. Our vocation as Christians is not to be first in this world, but
rather to be first in the eyes of God. We are challenged to examine
our present situation in the context of our ultimate horizon, the
Kingdom of God.

hacían vuestros padres con los falsos profetas.

La Cuaresma es un tiempo privilegiado para intensificar el camino de la propia conversión. Este camino
supone cooperar activamente con la gracia, para dar
muerte al hombre viejo que actúa en nosotros. Se trata
de romper con el pecado que habita en nuestros corazones, alejarnos de todo aquello que nos aparta del
Plan de Dios, y por consiguiente, de nuestra felicidad
y realización personal.
La Cuaresma es uno de los cuatro tiempos fuertes del
año litúrgico y ello debe verse reflejado con intensidad en cada uno de los detalles de su celebración.
Cuanto más se acentúen sus particularidades, más
fructuosamente podremos vivir toda su riqueza espiritual.
Por tanto habrá que esforzarse, entre otras cosas:
► Para que se descubra que en este tiempo son distintos tanto el enfoque de las lecturas bíblicas (en
la santa misa prácticamente no hay lectura continua), como el de los textos eucológicos (propios y
determinados casi siempre de modo obligatorio
para cada una de las celebraciones).
► Para que los cantos, sean totalmente distintos de
los habituales y reflejen la espiritualidad penitencial, propia de este tiempo.
► Para lograr una ambientación sobria y austera que
refleje el carácter de penitencia de la Cuaresma.

Jezus zeszedł z nimi na dół i zatrzymał się na
równinie. Był tam duży poczet Jego uczniów i
wielkie mnóstwo ludu z całej Judei i Jerozolimy
oraz z wybrzeża Tyru i Sydonu; A On podniósł
oczy na swoich uczniów i mówił: Błogosławieni
jesteście wy, ubodzy, albowiem do was należy
królestwo Boże. Błogosławieni wy, którzy teraz
głodujecie, albowiem będziecie nasyceni. Błogosławieni wy, którzy teraz płaczecie, albowiem
śmiać się będziecie. Błogosławieni będziecie,
gdy ludzie was znienawidzą, i gdy was wyłączą
spośród siebie, gdy zelżą was i z powodu Syna
Człowieczego podadzą w pogardę wasze imię
jako niecne: cieszcie się i radujcie w owym
dniu, bo wielka jest wasza nagroda w niebie.
Tak samo bowiem przodkowie ich czynili prorokom. Natomiast biada wam, bogaczom, bo odebraliście już pociechę waszą. Biada wam, którzy teraz jesteście syci, albowiem głód cierpieć
będziecie. Biada wam, którzy się teraz śmiejecie, albowiem smucić się i płakać będziecie.
Biada wam, gdy wszyscy ludzie chwalić was
będą. Tak samo bowiem przodkowie ich czynili
fałszywym prorokom.

W całym Kościele w Wielkim Poście odbywały się nauki, które dawał kandydatom do
przyjęcia Chrztu świętego sam miejscowy
biskup. On także przeprowadzał końcowy
egzamin i uroczyście udzielał tego sakramentu w noc wielkanocną przed świtem pamiątki
Zmartwychwstania Pańskiego wobec całej
wspólnoty kościelnej. Do dziś zaleca się, by chrzest osób dorosłych odbywał się właśnie w Wigilię Paschalną i był poprzedzony tzw. skrutyniami, odbywającymi się na przestrzeni
Wielkiego Postu.
W okresie Wielkiego Postu, który jest czasem pokuty i nawrócenia, Kościół, przypominając słowa Jezusa, proponuje trzy
drogi przybliżania się do Boga: post, jałmużnę i modlitwę.
Liturgia tego okresu jest dość wyciszona. Dominującym kolorem szat liturgicznych jest fiolet. Z obrzędów Mszy świętej
znika uroczysty hymn "Chwała na wysokości Bogu" (śpiewany jedynie w czasie przypadających w Wielkim
Poście uroczystości, np. św. Józefa - 19 marca, czy Zwiastowania Pańskiego - 25 marca) oraz radosna aklamacja
"Alleluja" (nawet w uroczystości i święta) śpiewana przed
odczytaniem fragmentu Ewangelii (zastępuje ją aklamacja
"Chwała Tobie, Królu wieków" albo "Chwała Tobie, Słowo
Boże"). Zakazane jest przyozdabianie ołtarza kwiatami, zaś
gra na instrumentach muzycznych dozwolona jest tylko w celu
podtrzymania śpiewu. Z rzadka także odzywają się dzwony.
Jedynym wyjątkiem od tych ostatnich zastrzeżeń jest IV Niedziela Wielkiego Postu, zwana Niedzielą Laetare. W okresie
Wielkiego Postu zabroniony jest udział w zabawach. Organizuje się także zwykle kilkudniowe rekolekcje, które mają pomóc w dobrym przeżyciu tego czasu. W wielu kościołach zachował się zwyczaj ustawiania krzyża, przy którym można
klęknąć i ucałować rany Chrystusa. Zwykle stoją przy nim
świece i kwiaty.

czterdziestodniowej pokuty.

Kurs przed Chrztem dziecka
Przypominamy, że w każdą trzecią niedzielę
miesiąca w naszej parafii po Mszy św. o godz.
10.30 odbywa się kurs przygotowujący rodziców i chrzestnych do chrztu dziecka.
Osoby zamierzające ochrzcić dziecko w naszej
parafii są proszone o zgłoszenie się na ten kurs prze chrztem
dziecka. Dlatego należy pamiętać, aby:
► zgłosić się do kancelarii parafialnej przynajmniej półtora miesiąca prze chrztem. (Aby uczestniczyć w kursie
przygotowującym)
► Przy zapisaniu chrztu jest wymagany akt urodzenia
dziecka.
Osoby zapisane do naszej parafii mogą
uzyskać informację o ofiarach złożonych
w roku 2009 na naszą parafię, w ten
sposób będzie można odpisać tę kwotę
od podatku.

również i dzisiaj wychodząc z kościoła można nabyć nowy numer
Tygodnika Katolickiego
„Niedziela”. Znajdziemy tam bardzo ciekawe artykuły na temat
życia kościoła w Polsce także naszej Archidiecezji. Czytając ten
tygodnik a także inne publikacje np.:
„Różaniec”, „Anioł stróż”, „Rodzina Radia Maryja” pogłębiamy naszą wiarę oraz miłość do Boga i Kościoła.
Jest także do wzięcia za darmo gazeta „Katolik”
