Lenten Regulations
Abstinence from meats is to
be observed by all Catholics
14 years old and older on all
the Fridays of Lent.
When we FAST we may
take only one full meal. Two
smaller meals are permitted
if necessary to maintain
strength according to one’s
needs, but eating solid foods
between meals is not permitted. Catholic who are 18 yrs
of age but not yet 59 are bound by the Fasting regulations on
Ash Wednesday.
Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of Fast and Abstinence and it is also encouraged to do so on Holy Saturday.
Blessed ashes will be distributed during the 7am, 8am, Masses
and during the 11am, 4pm services and during the 6pm Spanish
Mass and 8pm Polish Mass.
The season of Lent is a preparation for the celebration of Easter.
By the threefold discipline of fasting, almsgiving and prayer the
church keeps Lent from Ash Wednesday until the evening of
Holy Thursday. All of the faithful should undertake serious practice of these three traditions.
“On weekdays of Lent, it is strongly recommended to participate
in daily Mass and self-imposed observances of fasting. In light of
grave human needs which weigh on the Christian conscience in
all seasons, we urge particularly during Lent, generosity to local,
national and world programs of sharing of all things needed to
translate our duty to penance into a means of implementing the
right of the poor to their part of our abundance.” (U.S. Bishops
statement on penitential observances.)
The dates for the next two Religious
Education (CCD) classes are February
9th and February 16th. Classes begin
at 8:00am. Dismissal is at 10am.
A Neighborhood Watch meeting will be held on Tuesday,
February 19, 2008 at Woodbine School. The meeting will
begin at 6:30pm. Issues concerning our neighborhood will
be discussed.

ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL—IN-
PEW PLEDGE SUNDAY
For those parishioners who did not
attend Mass in our church or did not
make an in-pew pledge last weekend,
we will invite them to make an in-pew
pledge to the Archdiocesan Annual
Catholic Appeal-2008, this weekend. We
appeal to your generosity of all of our parishioners to support our
efforts to raise our goal of $20,653 that is assigned to our parish
this year.
Please be reminded that all proceeds collected during the 2008
Annual Catholic Appeal Campaign at St. Mary of Czestochowa
will be used to pay down our debt of $200,000 owed to the Archdiocesan Bank. Most importantly the Archdiocese will match all
funds raised, up to the amount of the parish goal, and apply them
to the parish debt.
Whatever monies we raise that exceed our goal will also be applied to our debt. For this present school year our parish received
a $200,000 grant from the 2007 Catholic Appeal. However, during 2006 we had to obtain a loan in the amount of $200,000 to
support our school and parish. This amount is our present debt
that we hope to reduce from funds raised during the 2008 Catholic Appeal
The Annual Catholic Appeal campaign is much different than
a one time special collection. It is a pledge campaign where you
can make a gift, payable over five months.
Your generosity in responding to the in-pew pledge today will
greatly help our parish to reduce its debt to the Archdiocesan
Bank. May God reward your generosity!
School News
The next Family Mass will be celebrated at 5pm on Saturday,
February 9th. Everyone is invited to pray with the school families at
this Mass.
The Missionary Image of Our Lady of Guadalupe will hold a place
of honor in the school from February 23rd through March 1st.
On March 3rd, students that attend area Public Schools are invited
to a “Shadow Day.” Students will follow a St. Mary student’s class
schedule and learn about St. Mary’s School. Lunch will be provided
and all visiting students will receive a free gift.
Registration of new students for all grades for the 2008-09 school
year is taking place. Please call the school at 708-656-5010 for
information about registration. A tour of the school is always available upon request.
The school is in need of a volunteer tutor for one 2nd grade student who needs help to learn reading skills. This help is needed
during the school. Please call the school principal, Mr. Al Theis, if
you are interested in volunteering to help with this task.

Fr. Kevin MacDonald, CSsR is anxious to
meet with our parishioners during the English Lenten Mission he will preach beginning at the 5pm Mass on Saturday, February 9th. The Anointing of the Sick will be
celebrated during this Mass. Fr. Kevin will
also speak during the 7:30am and 9am
Masses on Sunday, February 10th and during the 8am Masses during the Mission.
Evening services, Monday, Feb. 11
through Thursday, February 14th will begin
at 7pm in the church.

about the English Lenten Mission.

The Archdiocesan Council of Catholic Women is sponsoring
“Padres Plus on Parade - Chicago Style,” a talent showcase of
priests and nuns representing each of the archdiocesan vicariates. The production includes the velvety smooth voices of several of our priests. It features classical, jazz and ragtime numbers; there are even a few surprises. A portion of the proceeds
from this event will benefit the Retirement Fund for Religious and
PRMAS, the retirement fund for priests.

El ayuno y abstinencia de carne es manada torio el
Miércoles de ceniza y el Viernes Santo. El ayuno es
una sola comida fuerte y es requerida para las personas mayores de 18 a los 59 años. Todos los Viernes
durante la Cuaresma no se come carne y esto es para
personas mayores de 14 años de edad.

La Cuaresma es un tiempo privilegiado para intensificar
el camino de la propia conversión. Este camino supone
cooperar activamente con la gracia, para dar muerte al
hombre viejo que actúa en nosotros. Se trata de romper
con el pecado que habita en nuestros corazones, alejarnos
de todo aquello que nos aparta del Plan de Dios, y por
consiguiente, de nuestra felicidad y realización personal.
La Cuaresma es uno de los cuatro tiempos fuertes del año
litúrgico y ello debe verse reflejado con intensidad en
cada uno de los detalles de su celebración. Cuanto más se
acentúen sus particularidades, más fructuosamente podremos vivir toda su riqueza espiritual.
Por tanto habrá que esforzarse, entre otras cosas:
► Para que se descubra que en este tiempo son distintos
tanto el enfoque de las lecturas bíblicas (en la santa
misa prácticamente no hay lectura continua), como el
de los textos eucológicos (propios y determinados casi
siempre de modo obligatorio para cada una de las celebraciones).
► Para que los cantos, sean totalmente distintos de los
habituales y reflejen la espiritualidad penitencial, propia de este tiempo.
► Para lograr una ambientación sobria y austera que
refleje el carácter de penitencia de la Cuaresma.

Jezus, widząc tłumy, wyszedł na górę. A gdy usiadł,
przystąpili do Niego Jego uczniowie. Wtedy otworzył
swoje usta i nauczał ich tymi słowami: Błogosławieni
ubodzy w duchu, albowiem do nich należy królestwo
niebieskie. Błogosławieni, którzy się smucą, albowiem
oni będą pocieszeni. Błogosławieni cisi, albowiem oni
na własność posiądą ziemię. Błogosławieni, którzy
łakną i pragną sprawiedliwości, albowiem oni będą
nasyceni. Błogosławieni miłosierni, albowiem oni miłosierdzia dostąpią. Błogosławieni czystego serca, albowiem oni Boga oglądać będą. Błogosławieni, którzy
wprowadzają pokój, albowiem oni będą nazwani synami Bożymi. Błogosławieni, którzy cierpią prześladowanie dla sprawiedliwości, albowiem do nich należy
królestwo niebieskie. Błogosławieni jesteście, gdy /
ludzie/ wam urągają i prześladują was, i gdy z mego

Mt 5,1-12a
Wielki Post
W całym Kościele w Wielkim Poście odbywały się nauki, które dawał kandydatom do przyjęcia Chrztu świętego sam miejscowy biskup.
On także przeprowadzał końcowy egzamin i
uroczyście udzielał tego sakramentu w noc
wielkanocną przed świtem pamiątki Zmartwychwstania Pańskiego wobec całej wspólnoty kościelnej. Do dziś zaleca się, by chrzest osób dorosłych
odbywał się właśnie w Wigilię Paschalną i był poprzedzony
tzw. skrutyniami, odbywającymi się na przestrzeni Wielkiego
Postu.
W okresie Wielkiego Postu, który jest czasem pokuty i nawrócenia, Kościół, przypominając słowa Jezusa, proponuje trzy
drogi przybliżania się do Boga: post, jałmużnę i modlitwę. Liturgia tego okresu jest dość wyciszona. Dominującym kolorem
szat liturgicznych jest fiolet. Z obrzędów Mszy świętej znika
uroczysty hymn "Chwała na wysokości Bogu" (śpiewany jedynie w czasie przypadających w Wielkim Poście uroczystości,
np. św. Józefa - 19 marca, czy Zwiastowania Pańskiego - 25
marca) oraz radosna aklamacja "Alleluja" (nawet w uroczystości i święta) śpiewana przed odczytaniem fragmentu Ewangelii
(zastępuje ją aklamacja "Chwała Tobie, Królu wieków" albo
"Chwała Tobie, Słowo Boże"). Zakazane jest przyozdabianie
ołtarza kwiatami, zaś gra na instrumentach muzycznych dozwolona jest tylko w celu podtrzymania śpiewu. Z rzadka także
odzywają się dzwony. Jedynym wyjątkiem od tych ostatnich
zastrzeżeń jest IV Niedziela Wielkiego Postu, zwana Niedzielą
Laetare. W okresie Wielkiego Postu zabroniony jest udział w
zabawach. Organizuje się także zwykle kilkudniowe rekolekcje,
które mają pomóc w dobrym przeżyciu tego czasu. W wielu
kościołach zachował się zwyczaj ustawiania krzyża, przy którym można klęknąć i ucałować rany Chrystusa. Zwykle stoją
przy nim świece i kwiaty.

Środa Popielcowa wypada w tym
roku 6-go lutego. Msza Święta w
tym dniu w języku polskim będzie
o godz. 8-ej wieczorem. Msze
Święte w języku angielskim będą o
godz. 7:00 i 8:00 z rana oraz w
języku hiszpańskim o 6:00
wieczorem. Będą także dwa
nabożeństwa posypania głów
popiołem o godzinie 11:00 AM i 4:00 PM w języku
angielskim i hiszpańskim.
Podczas wszystkich Mszy Świętych będziemy
posypywać głowy popiołem na znak rozpoczęcia
czterdziestodniowej pokuty.
W Środę Popielcową obowiązuje post
Ścisły dla osób w przedziale wiekowym
od 18 do 59 lat. Jest to również dzień
wstrzemięźliwości od pokarmów
mięsnych dla tych, którzy ukończyli 14
lat. Post i wstrzemięźliwość od
pokarmów mięsnych obowiązuje we wszystkie piątki
Wielkiego Postu.
Osoby zapisane do naszej parafii mogą
uzyskać informację o ofiarach złożonych w roku 2007 na naszą parafię, w
ten sposób będzie można odpisać tę
kwotę od podatku.

Kurs przed Chrztem dziecka
Przypominamy, że w każdą trzecią niedzielę miesiąca w naszej
parafii po Mszy św. o godz.
10.30 odbywa się kurs przygotowujący rodziców i chrzestnych
do chrztu dziecka.
Osoby zamierzające ochrzcić
dziecko w naszej parafii są proszone o zgłoszenie się na ten
kurs prze chrztem dziecka. Dlatego należy pamiętać, aby:
► zgłosić się do kancelarii parafialnej przynajmniej
półtora miesiąca prze chrztem. (Aby uczestniczyć w
kursie przygotowującym)
► Przy zapisaniu chrztu jest wymagany akt urodzenia
dziecka.

Monday through Thursday there will be a Mission Homily during the

MISSION TOPICS
MONDAY EVENING 7:00 P.M.
Symbol: BIBLE, representing God’s communication to all people
Topic: SALVATION; God’s dream for our happiness, and our response
Goal:
To deepen our acceptance of God’s tremendous love for us.
TUESDAY EVENING 7:00 P. M.
Symbol: EASTER CANDLE, representing the risen Jesus who conquers
sin and death
Topic: SIN, RECONCILIATION AND HEALING; living the life of
conversion
Goal: To be freed of the burden of our sinfulness and of past grudges
and pains.
Priests will be available for the Sacrament of Reconciliation (confession)
Tuesday evening.
WEDNESDAY EVENING 7:00 P. M.
Symbol: BREAD, representing Jesus, the Bread of Life
Topic: THE EUCHARIST; nourishment for the journey to be Eucharist.
Goal: To grow in our appreciation of the Eucharist , and how we are
called to be Eucharist to the world.
THURSDAY EVENING 7:00 P. M.
Symbol: ALTAR, representing Jesus pouring Himself out for us.
Topic:
YOUR MISSION; Our baptismal vocation is to share in the work
of Jesus Christ.
Goal:
To become aware of how we need to go forth and proclaim the
Good News
After the Thursday evening Mission celebration please join us for wine and cheese, coffee and
goodies in Makuch Hall.
OUR MISSION PRAYER
God, Our Father, we offer you praise and thanksgiving for all the many
gifts you have given us through Jesus, Your Son.
We thank you especially for the gift of our parish MISSION.
Loving and gracious God, quiet our minds and hearts that we may be
open to the gift of your truth. Grant that our mission may be:
A Time of Grace for all,
A Time of growth for the young,
A Time of refreshment for the old
A Time of renewal for families,
A Time of healing for the broken
A Time of joy for the sorrowing,
A Time of challenge for the complacent,
A Time of forgiveness for the sinner,
A Time of strength for the holy,
A Time of homecoming for those who have been away.
Grant, most Loving God, that our Mission may bring down your richest
blessings on each and every member of our Parish community.
We pray through the intercession of Mary, our Mother, in the name of
Jesus Christ who lives with you and the Holy Spirit forever. Amen
