A VISIBLE GOD
We find it difficult to convey ideas to people unless we can actually show them something, demonstrate what we mean. God, who
is invisible and truly beyond human understanding, apparently faces the same difficulty. People want to see, not just listen to
an idea. So God gave us Jesus Christ, God
made visible in the world.
During these past weeks we have seen how Jesus was revealed as an infant to the shepherds and the magi, and then
began his adult “public life” at his baptism by John. Today’s
Gospel reading tells us of his “first sign, “ providing wine for
the wedding guests at Cana.
Of course, even Jesus, God made visible, was not always
easily understood in his own day, nor is he even now. So we
have to ponder what we see: the poverty and simplicity of his
birth, his humility and openness before John the Baptist, his
kindness and compassion toward people in their ordinary problems, such as running short of wine at a wedding. Yet it is in
coming to know Jesus that we come to know God.

faced by thousands of Catholic faithful living in the United
States. The millions who live in these places, called home mission dioceses, rely on the Catholic Home Missions Appeal,
whose theme is “Strengthening the Church at Home.” Your
generosity would provide grants that support priestly and religious vocations, faith formation and education for leaders to
attend to the unique needs of their faith communities.

St. Joseph School Catholic School Week Calendar
Sunday, Jan. 27th-Family Mass at 9:30am celebrated by
Bishop McManus and presentation of “Partners in Education
Award” to Richard A. and Marie M. Nowak. Brief program
and reception to follow in school cafeteria. We will hold Open
House from 11:45am—2:00pm including tours, a scavenger
hunt and book fair.
Monday, Jan. 28–school wide food drive and Buddy Bingo
Tuesday, Jan. 29-The Secret World of Bubbles presentation.
Wednesday, Jan. 30-Patriotic Hat Day, each student will
write a letter to President Obama, “A Tribute to Elvis” at

HELP NEEDED
Two families whose children attend St. Joseph School are
presently experiencing severe financial difficulties. Family (A)
have two children at SJS, whose father lost his job and the
mother has been diagnosed with an incurable illness which
gravely affected their daily lives.
Family (B) have three children in SJS, parents are facing
personal problems which affected their family life, income of
only one parent makes it impossible to continue their children's
Catholic education.
Unfortunately the victims of the above situations are the children, who cannot help themselves. What they need most at this
critical time is stability in their psychological development
which the school can provide. It would be detrimental and
cruel to deny them a Catholic education because of their predicament.
Perhaps there are parishioners who are sensitive to the needs
of children and who would consider assisting these families.
SAINT JOSEPH SCHOOL NEWS
Our students, Thomas Dziechciarz, Bartosz Mamro, Alexandra Sobczak and Justyn Sudyka participated in the “Stand Up,
Speak Out” Student Leadership Conference for Catholic middle
school students held at Assumption College on Jan., 9th. They
joined other schools in the diocese for an enriching day sponsored by the Roche Center for Catholic Education at Boston
College. They participated in group activities including workshops on speaking and listening, clarifying values, and team
building. Congratulations to all!

SOLID EDUCATION
President Obama announced new measures to improve our
children’s safety in schools. Safety has a double meaningsafety from someone who wants to harm you and preventing an
individual from harming himself or others. The police can
protect you in many cases from outside physical threats but
cannot influence a person not to carry out a violent act. This
requires a lot of prayer, faith, values and tradition which only
Catholic schools can offer. Spiritual development of an individual is just as important as his/her scientific and physical
achievements.

Respect Life Mass at St. Paul Cathedral-Please join us in
prayer on Thursday, Jan., 24 at 7:30pm as we commemorate the
40th anniversary of the tragic Roe v. Wade decision and pray

“Reflections on the Letters of Paul”- discussion of Holy
Scripture will be held at St. Louis Church Hall on Thurs., Jan.

from investments in 2012 from the fund.

YEAR OF FAITH
All our efforts in the “Year of Faith” are directed toward
increasing the participation in the Holy Sacrifice of Mass on Sundays
and weekdays, especially on the First Friday and First Saturday of the
month. After each Mass we will recite a prayer asking for God’s help
and the inspiration of the Holy Spirit for a particular intention. This
week we will concentrate on the— so to speak— non-practicing
Catholics. Non practicing Catholics are not Catholics. The first
community of believers during the Apostle’s time were called
Catholics because they participated in daily Mass. We should direct
our efforts to those who officially left the Church by a personal formal
act or others who just stopped participating in Divine Worship. Our
mission is to reach out to them through prayer, positive word and bring
them back HOME.
The challenge of today is to recognize the distinctive character of
cultural hostility to the Catholic Church which was born of
indifference to the Bible and faith. This leads to the claim that the God
of the Bible is the enemy of human freedom, human maturity and
progress in scientific discoveries. In the 21st century this hostility may
lead to a new form of persecution directed at believers for the simple
reason that they believe in God and practice their religion. Modernity
and post-modernity has produced a toxic public culture that is
increasingly Christophobic. All of this presents a new challenge to the
Catholics who together with ordained leaders will engage those who
are disenchanted with the Church and indifferent to religion.
PRAYER LINE
All our activities are successful when they are supported by prayers.
We all need prayers in our personal life but especially in a time of
difficulty, sickness and other needs. At our Basilica we have a
“Prayer Line” which is comprised of many individuals who form a
“chain” for those who need spiritual help. Please contact Theresa

special intention or if you would like to join this dedicated and caring
group.
JANUARY 22 DAY OF PRAYER AND PENANCE FOR THE
LEGAL PROTECTION OF UNBORN CHILDREN
All diocese of the United States will observe as a particular day of
prayer for the full restoration of the legal guarantee of the right to life
and or penance for violations to the dignity of the human person
committed through acts of abortion.
To take part in this national prayer campaign we can attend daily
Mass and offer it for an end to abortion— or pray the Rosary—or
engage in some form of fasting—or pray for the conversion of mind
and heart of those who support or have been involved in abortion in
any way—or pray for our country’s elected officials that they may
enact laws that protect human life from the moment of conception to
natural death, respect the constitutional and God-given right to
religious freedom and rights of conscience.
Our participation in the shared commitment to the sacredness of
human life and the dignity of the human person will with God’s grace,
truly work toward the building up of a Culture of Life and a
Civilization of Love.

Religious Education-Holiday no classes on Jan. 21-Classes will
resume on January 28th at 5:30 in St. Joseph School.
Confirmation Class-will meet on Sunday, January 20th at 8:30am in
the school followed by participation in the Liturgy at 9:30am.
FIRST FRIDAY MASS
It appears that it has become difficult for members of the Sacred
Heart Society and parishioners to come to 7:00am First Friday Mass,
especially during the winter time. Therefore, the Adoration of the
Blessed Sacrament on First Friday will begin after the 8:30am Children’s Mass.
The members of the Sacred Heart Society are invited to participate
in the 8:30am children’s Mass and right after the Liturgy they will
recite their usual prayer with the Litany to Sacred Heart of Jesus. The
Mass at 7:00am for the living or deceased members of Sacred Heart
Society will continue to be scheduled and parishioners including members of the Society are always welcome to participate.

„Wówczas narody ujrzą twą sprawiedliwość i chwałę twoją wszyscy królowie.
I nazwą cię nowym imieniem, które usta Pana oznaczą.” (Iz 62, 2)
Patrząc na swoje życie, możemy zobaczyć, że
nawet, jeśli nie ma w nim poważnego cierpienia
czy dużych problemów, to jednak „czegoś” w nim
brakuje. Nie potrafimy naprawdę cieszyć się
pełnią życia, nawet jeśli realizujemy różne nasze
pragnienia i cele. To właśnie oznaczają słowa
Maryi z dzisiejszej Ewangelii: „Nie mają już
wina”. Wino to znak świętowania, obfitowania,
radości, a także jeden z symboli Ducha Świętego. Jezus Chrystus jest
jedynym, który może nam dać prawdziwe spełnienie, który może
naszemu życiu nadać prawdziwy smak i uczynić je, pośród naszej
codzienności, naszych prac i cierpień, nieustającym świętowaniem.
Pozwólmy dzisiaj obdarować się Chrystusowi, zwłaszcza podczas
Eucharystii.
Druga kolekta dzisiejszej niedzieli jest przeznaczona na pokrycie kosztów utrzymania i energii.
Druga kolekta w przyszłą niedzielę będzie przeznaczona na Catholic Home Mission Appeal.

Tysiące Katolików w Stanach Zjednoczonych zmaga się na co dzień
z problemem niedostatecznej katechizacji oraz posługi duszpasterskiej.
Owe wspólnoty wiernych i diecezje są nazwane „misjami
domowymi”. To właśnie z myślą o nich funkcjonuje „Catholic Home
Mission Appeal”, aby „wzmocnić kościół domowy”. Dzięki Waszym
ofiarom możliwe jest wsparcie formacji powołań kapłańskich i
zakonnych oraz kształcenie liderów i animatorów, którzy później
posługują we swoich wspólnotach parafialnych.

W najbliższy poniedziałek 21 stycznia będziemy świętowali dzień
urodzin Marcina Lutra Kinga Jr. W związku z tym, że jest to święto
ogólnonarodowe, zarówno szkoła jak i plebania będzie nieczynna.
MSZE PIERWSZOPIĄTKOWE
Wydaje się, że w ostatnim czasie, uczestnictwo we Mszy św. i
adoracji w pierwsze piątki o godzinie 7:00 dla członków Sacred Heart
Society. Dlatego też rozpoczęcie Adoracji Najświętszego Sakramentu
zostaje przesunięte na czas po Mszy o godz. 8:30. Natomiast
tradycyjnie Msza św. o godz. 7:00 będzie odprawiana w intencji
członków Sacred Heart Society.
PRAYER LINE
Wszystko, czego się podejmujemy, powinniśmy wspierać naszą
modlitwą. Co więcej, potrzebujemy modlitwy w naszych codziennych
sprawach i zmaganiach, szczególnie gdy doskwierają nam poważne
problemy, choroby czy nieoczekiwane trudności. W naszej parafii
funkcjonuje „Prayer Line”, czyli grupa osób, które nieustannie modlą
się w poszczególnych intencjach osób w potrzebie. Osoby chcące
prosić o modlitwę w jakiejś intencji bądź też chcące dołączyć do grupy

WIARA I SZKOŁA
Tradycja, Magisterium Kościoła, historia wychowania oraz opinie
współczesnych pedagogów zgodnie wskazują, że podstawowym
miejscem wychowania jest rodzina. Rodzice są głównymi
wychowawcami swych dzieci i ich prawo, a zarazem obowiązek
spełniania tej funkcji jest czymś pierwotnym i mającym pierwszeństwo
w stosunku do zadań wychowawczych innych osób. Szkoła ma jednak
zasadnicze znaczenie wśród instytucji, które wspierają rodzinę w
wypełnianiu jej posłannictwa wychowawczego. Gdy zatem mowa o
odpowiedzialności społeczeństwa za wychowanie przyszłych pokoleń,
nie można przeoczyć ważnej funkcji szkoły, jaką jest wspieranie
człowieka: wychowywanego i wychowującego. Sobór Watykański II
podkreśla, że między wszystkimi środkami wychowania szczególne

wytrwałą troskliwością władze umysłowe, rozwija zdolność
wydawania prawidłowych sądów, wprowadza w dziedzictwo kultury
wytworzonej przez przeszłe pokolenia, kształci zmysł wartości,
przygotowuje do życia zawodowego, sprzyja dyspozycjom do
wzajemnego zrozumienia się, stwarzając przyjazne współżycie wśród
wychowanków, różniących się charakterem i pochodzeniem. Ponadto
stanowi jakby pewne centrum, w którego wysiłkach i osiągnięciach
powinny uczestniczyć równocześnie rodziny, nauczyciele, różnego
rodzaju organizacje rozwijające życie kulturalne, obywatelskie,
religijne, państwowe i cała społeczność ludzka.
W edukacji chrześcijańskiej celem priorytetowym jest zdobycie
przez dziecko, dzięki zabiegom rodziców, szkoły i Kościoła, pełni
człowieczeństwa. Szkoły nie da się traktować jako instytucji odrębnej
od innych placówek wychowawczych i zarządzanej osobno, musi ona
być powiązana ze światem polityki, ekonomii, kultury i ze
społeczeństwem jako całością. Szkole Katolickiej wypada odważnie
stawić czoło nowej sytuacji kulturalnej, zająć krytyczne stanowisko,
jako instancji wobec programów wychowawczych różnych stron,
stanowić przykład i bodziec dla innych instytucji zajmujących się
wychowaniem, być przedmurzem problemów edukacyjnych wspólnoty
kościelnej. Warto zwrócić uwagę przede wszystkim na wychowujący
wymiar szkoły, nie tylko kształcący i przekazujący wiedzę zgodnie z
programem. Szkoła winna być wspólnotą osób: uczniów, rodziców i
nauczycieli.
Na podstawie doświadczeń historycznych i kulturowych można
stwierdzić, że autorytet i pewien kredyt zaufania był związany z
piastowanym stanowiskiem. Jeśli wypełniało się na przykład
powołanie nauczyciela, kapłana czy stróża prawa, miało się znaczący
status społeczny. Obecnie autorytet określa nie habit, prawo,
rozporządzenia, praca w takiej czy innej instytucji, ale człowiek
samym sobą. Stąd też powołanie nauczyciela wymaga szczególnych
przymiotów umysłu i serca, jak najstaranniejszego przygotowania i
ciągłej gotowości do odnowy i dostosowania się. To są główne
powody, dla których katolicki wychowawca jest wezwany do
sumiennego kierowania się chrześcijańską wizją człowieka, w zgodzie
z nauczaniem Kościoła. Tak pojęta praca wychowawcza, odnajdując
wzór człowieczeństwa w Jezusie Chrystusie, zmierza do możliwie
pełnego i wszechstronnego rozwoju człowieczeństwa wychowanków.
Niewątpliwie ważną rolę pełni permanentne doskonalenie warsztatu
własnej pracy poprzez rozwój środków aktywizujących, stosowanie
nowoczesnych metod kształcenia, uczenia i wychowania. „Poznacie
ich po ich owocach. Czy zbiera się winogrona z ciernia albo ostu figi?
Tak każde dobre drzewo wydaje dobre owoce, a złe drzewo wydaje złe

świadkami wiary. Ich tożsamość konstytuowana jest jednocześnie
przez misję zleconą przez Kościół, niezbędną wiedzę, dojrzałą
osobowość i pogłębioną duchowość, która w naturalny sposób
przekazują swoim wychowankom.
