FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Faith, hope, and love remain, these three; but the greatest of
these is love.

AN ONGOING MISSION
In his hometown synagogue, Jesus’
neighbors are amazed by his words. Nevertheless, they remind each other. “Is this not
Joseph’s son?”
Surely the people know who he is. The
carpenter’s son. The young man who had learned in this very
synagogue. The boy down the street.
Conflict arises as Jesus begins to define himself in a new way.
When he compares himself to the ancient prophets Elijah and
Elisha the tensions grow. The tensions multiply when Jesus
begins to tell of a new mission for God’s people: the good news
of the scriptures is intended for all.
In his famous passage from the First Letter to the Corinthians,
St. Paul reminds us of the eternal nature of love. Love does not
come to an end. In today’s readings, we are reminded that, like
love, Jesus’ mission cannot be contained. Jesus slips through the
crowd of persecutors and moves on to new challenges. We are
called to this same perseverance in the name of love.
YEAR OF FAITH
The “Year of Faith” gives us the opportunity to get involved in
the evangelization of our parish and to share the good news of
the Gospel and perhaps to encourage, just one person, to come
to Church—to return home. The following prayer should be
said at least once a day to enlighten our minds and strengthen
our will: May this Year of Faith be a year to help me appreciate the gift of faith, deepen my relationship with God and
strengthen my commitment to sharing faith with others. May
I recognize the face of Christ in those who are suffering and
help them along the journey of life. May I not grow lazy in
the faith. May I be enlightened in mind and heart by the word
of the Lord. May I be capable of opening the hearts and
minds of many to the desire of God and for true life, life without end. Amen.
DEVOTION TO THE DIVINE MERCY
The first Sunday of the month is devoted to the Divine Mercy
with special services at 3p.m. This afternoon we will sing the
Chaplet to the Divine Mercy followed by adoration and benediction. A devotion most dear to Our Lord is the veneration of
His passion at the very hour that recalls His death on the Cross.
We ask all parishioners to participate.

CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK REFLECTIONS
On Sunday, January 27, 2013 Bishop Robert McManus
opened the Catholic Schools Week celebration at St. Joseph
School in Webster with a Solemn Mass at our Basilica. The
uplifting and joyful Liturgy accompanied by the Children’s
Choir of St. Joseph School students with participation of various musical instruments provided a beautiful background for
the Bishop’s message. This year’s Catholic Schools Celebration
theme was “Catholic Schools Raise the Standards”.
Interpreting Sunday’s readings, the Bishop emphasized that
regardless of age, skin color or social status we are all important parts of Jesus’ Body, which is the Church, and are responsible for each other’s physical and spiritual needs. The Church
cares for those less fortunate through many ministries and social agencies. Through Catholic Schools the Church cares for
the spiritual needs of the children. The Bishop compared
Catholic schools to the care of loving parents who do not settle
for only “do your best and that’s enough”. The loving parents
just as the Catholic Schools will raise the standards and encourage the children to excel in everything they do.
PARTNERS IN EDUCATION AWARD
During the 9:30am Liturgy, Bishop McManus presented the
Partners in Education Award to Richard A. Nowak and Marie
M. Nowak. Mr. Nowak is a graduate of St. Joseph School, AllAmerican star athlete at the U. S. Military Academy at West
Point and successful businessman who lives in Texas. His
dedication to St. Joseph School is exemplary. In addition to the
many acts of financial support to St. Joseph School, he committed himself to an additional $400,000. He truly lives the ethos
of St. Joseph School and resembles the spirit of our forefathers
who sacrificed all they had to build our church and school. Mr.
Cushing, Principal of SJS, in his introduction said, “Mr. Nowak
has been exceedingly dedicated, inspirational and committed to
excellence when it comes to forming a quality educational experience for the students of SJS”. As I reflect on personalities
of people who are generous to children, I always find that they
are people of deep faith with a spirit of caring and sharing, with
the ability to make a sacrifice. There are people who have resources but lack the above mentioned qualities.
Mr. Nowak in his acceptance speech called himself a remote
parishioner and challenged all of us to step up to the plate and
see this project through.
May God Bless Richard and Marie and their stewardship to
St. Joseph School and to the Catholic Church.
UPDATE ON EXPANSION OF ST. JOSEPH SCHOOL
It was announced in December, that Bishop McManus gave
us permission to build the Gym for the students of St. Joseph
School. In view of the demolition of the Park Avenue School,
we have been in dire need for a facility for our physical education and athletic programs. It was a very timely and much appreciated gesture.
The additional $400,000 contribution from Mr. Nowak and
other donations, motivated Bishop McManus to allow us to add
a shell for the cafeteria/parish hall and kitchen during the gym
construction.
Once again, the extraordinary generosity of the Nowak’s
will most certainly have a great impact on the scope of this
project. They paid the full cost of the gym, so that monies from
other resources could be directed to the parish hall/kitchen and
cafeteria.
Most of us agree that an adequate, modern facility is necessary
for our parish to foster a sense of community to hold spiritual,
social and cultural activities. Lack of suitable space severely
impedes our potential to become an energetic and dynamic parish community.
So far most of the funds were raised from non-parishioners.
It is my hope that our devoted parishioners will continue the
legacy of our forefathers to complete this project.
Successful Catholic Schools Week– Msgr., Czarnecki, Mr.
Cushing, Mr. Skrocki, SJS staff and students wish to thank all
of the school families, parishioners and friends for making
Catholic Schools Week at SJS such a great and successful
week.
St. Joseph School Geography Bee-was held last week
which was a challenging experience for 10 finalists from grades
4, 5, 6, 7 & 8. The winners were: 3rd place, Shauna Harney;
2nd place, Paul Davey and 1st place, Bartosz Mamro. Congratulations to all participants. Bartosz will represent SJS and
compete at the Worcester area level of competition which leads
to the State Championship level.

Żyjemy w świecie, który jest owładnięty
manią doraźnej skuteczności, i taką
mentalność wnosimy również do Kościoła
i do naszego przeżywania wiary. Bywa, że
w różnych sytuacjach wycofujemy się
z dania świadectwa wierze, motywując to tym, że „to i tak nic
by nie dało”. Tymczasem chrześcijańskie świadectwo ma
uobecniać Chrystusa, niezależnie od tego, czy zostanie On
natychmiast przyjęty, czy nie. Bóg przygotowywał proroka
Jeremiasza na przeciwności, a Jezus przyszedł do Nazaretu
świadom tego, że żaden prorok nie jest mile widziany w swojej
ojczyźnie. Niech niedzielne spotkanie z Chrystusem
w Eucharystii uwalnia nas od lęku przed przyznawaniem się do
Niego, zwłaszcza wobec przeciwności.

REFLEKSJA NA TYDZIEŃ SZKÓŁ KATOLICKICH
W ubiegłą niedzielę, 27 stycznia, biskup Rober McManus
uroczystą Eucharystią rozpoczął obchody Tygodnia Szkół
Katolickich w naszej parafii i szkole. W czasie uroczystej
Liturgii, upiększonej śpiewem chóru dziecięcego przy
akompaniamencie różnorodnych instrumentów, biskup
podzielił się swoją refleksja na temat wartości edukacji
katolickiej. W tym roku przyświeca nam hasło: „Catholic
Schools Raise the Standards” „Szkoły Katolickie Podwyższają
Standardy”.
Odnosząc się do czytań niedzielnych, biskup zaznaczył, że
bez względu na nasz wiek, kolor skóry czy status społeczny,
wszyscy jesteśmy ważnymi członkami Mistycznego Ciała
Chrystusa, jakim jest Kościół i jako tacy jesteśmy
odpowiedzialni za siebie nawzajem zarówno w sferze fizycznej
jak i psychicznej. Poprzez szkoły katolickie, Kościół troszczy
się o potrzeby duchowe dzieci. Biskup porównał szkołę
katolicką do dobrych rodziców, którzy nie mówią tylko „zrób
to co potrafisz i wystarczy”, ale ciągle zachęcają swoje dzieci i
podwyższają wymagania tak, by doskonaliły się we wszystkim,
co robią.

KORONKA DO MIŁOSIERDZIA BOŻEGO
Dzisiejszej niedzieli gromadzimy się na wspólnej modlitwie Koronką do Miłosierdzia Bożego. Jest to godzina modlitwy o
potrzebne łaski dla nas i dla naszych bliskich. Odmawianie Koronki jest drogą otwarcia się człowieka na doświadczenie Bożego
Miłosierdzia i stanowi istotny element świadczenia miłosierdzia bliźnim, tym bardziej, że z tą modlitwą związane są obietnice
Chrystusa: „Przez odmawianie tej koronki podoba mi się dać wszystko, o co mnie prosić będą" (Dz. 1128). Wyjaśnia jednak, że
przez koronkę można wyprosić to wszystko, co jest zgodne z wolą Bożą (Dz. 1731). Określenie „wszystko" oznacza w powyższym
kontekście zarówno dobra duchowe - zbawcze, jak i doczesne, tak dla całych społeczności, jak i dla indywidualnych osób. Pan Jezus
wielokrotnie zachęcał lub wręcz nakazywał „nieustanne" odmawianie Koronki do Miłosierdzia Bożego. Swym zasięgiem mistyczka
miała obejmować w czasie modlitwy całą ludzkość: grzeszników, znajdujących się w niebezpieczeństwie popełnienia grzechu,
konających, zagrożonych potępieniem, a także osoby nie znające Boga czy też za mało Go kochające (Dz. 929). Chrystus zapewniał
ją, że obdarzy łaską nawrócenia i dobrej śmierci umierających, gdy będzie przy nich odmawiana Koronka do Bożego Miłosierdzia
(Dz. 811). Zapewniał także o swojej obecności przy tych osobach: „Gdy tę koronkę przy konających odmawiać będą, stanę
pomiędzy Ojcem a duszą konającą nie jako Sędzia sprawiedliwy, ale jako Zbawiciel miłosierny" (Dz. 1541). Pan Jezus dał jej
poznać, iż w tej koronce jest wielka pomoc dla konających (Dz. 834-835). Odmawianie koronki stanowi nie tylko drogę świadczenia
miłosierdzia innym ludziom, ale wiążą się z tym także obietnice Chrystusa w stosunku do osób praktykujących tę modlitwę (Dz.
848). Dotyczą one w szczególny sposób godziny śmierci: „Ktokolwiek będzie ją odmawiał, dostąpi wielkiego miłosierdzia w
godzinie śmierci (...), niepojętych łask pragnę udzielać duszom, które ufają mojemu miłosierdziu" (Dz. 687). Ta wielka obietnica
dotyczy z całą pewnością nawrócenia i śmierci w stanie łaski. Chrystus zapewnił mistyczkę, że wszyscy szerzący cześć Bożego
Miłosierdzia i odmawiający koronkę „w godzinę śmierci nie doznają przerażenia. Miłosierdzie moje osłoni je w tej ostatniej
walce" (Dz. 1540). Powyższa obietnica wskazuje na potrójny wymiar łaski udzielanej umierającym - brak lęku, pokój duszy i
spokojną śmierć.
W objawieniach Chrystus zachęcał apostołkę Bożego Miłosierdzia do nieustannego odmawiania koronki i do rozszerzania
znajomości tej formuły modlitewnej wśród jak najliczniejszej rzeszy wierzących. Przedstawił też podstawowe warunki, jakie
powinny być spełnione przy odmawianiu koronki: ufność i wytrwałość w modlitwie oraz pełnienie dzieł miłosierdzia przez czyn,
słowo i modlitwę. Recytacja koronki powinna więc wypływać z ufności w Miłosierdzie Boże i być jej zewnętrznym wyrazem,
ponieważ Bóg udziela swych łask tylko tym, którzy ufają Jego miłosierdziu (Dz. 687).
