In contrast to other species of animals, the shrikes are characterized by the rare behavior, which is the impaling of their prey on spikes or thorns of the shrubs and trees or the barbed wire used as the elements of fences in agriculture. There are proposed many hypotheses concerning such way of storing the food of Lanius species. This study present the results about this behaviour of red-backed shrikes Lanius collurio collected in an agricultural landscape of extensive farming 10–15 km from Siedlce. Despite the good knowledge of the breeding biology, ecology and composition of food, so far the role of storing the food by this species has not been solved. The studies was conducted by 4 breeding seasons of this species, i.e., since 2012 to 2015 there was found 92 broods of 62 pairs nested and it was found 444 preys in larders of the redbacked shrikes. Among preys dominated Coleoptera, Orthoptera and Diptera. Storaged prey have function of the larders and are used in the period of feeding nestlings and fledglings, when the demand for food is the greatest. The preys aren’t stored for the periods of inclement weather and not only by the males with the best fitness (the largest ones). Probably, the impaled preys are mark the borders of the territory of the given pair (male) at the beginning of the breeding season of shrikes. The preys aren’t impaling only in the territories with the greatest abundance of potential food. Key words: red-backed shrike, food storage, agricultural landscape, eastern Poland
