ALTAR GUILD
We owe deep gratitude to the Altar Guild under the leadership
of Fred and Sylvia Kitka for the beautiful and traditional Christmas decorations at our Basilica. Many volunteers including
parishioners, visitors and friends worked tirelessly to transform
our Basilica into a Christmas vision.
May this blessed season fill these devoted volunteers with
lasting gifts from the New Born Messiah.

THE HOLY FAMILY OF JESUS, MARY AND JOSEPH

Over all other virtues put on love,
that is, the bond of perfection.

LOVE
For generations, various cultures regarded
family life merely as a utilitarian necessity.
Sirach introduces honor and respect. For Jews
and Christians alike the value of family goes
even further. The family is seen as the indispensable school where love is learned. Paul
addresses the Colossians and offers a list of virtues that make
for a solid and happy church. These values also make for a
happy family at ease with itself and its members: mercy, kindness, humility, meekness, patience, forgiveness. As a capstone,
Paul urges love, which brings all of these domestic virtues to
perfection.
Paul seems to be on a roll as he lauds the virtues of the
church at Colossae. With such heartfelt virtues, it is no wonder
Paul burst into song. Who wouldn't? Its clear that the center of
the church is love. It is clear that no matter how far from home
the members travel, the heart remains and all the members are
connected by the gravitational pull of mutual love,. a love first
learned in family life.
FEAST OF THE HOLY FAMILY: JESUS, MARY
AND JOSEPH will be celebrated this Sunday, Dec. 29th.
The devotion to the Holy Family was born in Bethlehem,
together with the Baby Jesus. The shepherds went to adore the
Child and, at the same time, they gave honor to His family.
Later, in a similar way, the three wise men came from the East
to adore and give honor to the newborn King with gifts of gold,
frankincense and myrrh that would be safeguarded by His family.
Christ, Himself, was the first devotee of His family. He
showed His devotion to His mother and foster father by submitting Himself with infinite humility to the duty of filial obedience towards them.
Let us imitate the Holy Family and say a prayer dedicating
your family to the Holy Family.
After each Mass this weekend there will be a special blessing
for all families. May God build our parish community, through
the intercession of our good patron, St. Joseph and Blessed
Mother to be a family of faith, dedication and unity.
FIRST FRIDAY
We will observe First Friday of the month on January 3rd.
Mass at 7:00am will be offered for the deceased members of the
Sacred Heart Society and members and parishioners are invited
to attend and recite the usual prayers with the Litany to Sacred
Heart of Jesus.
We ask scheduled adorers to participate at their appointed
time. Adoration will conclude at 3:00pm with the Chaplet to the
Divine Mercy and Benediction.
The Mass at 7:00pm will be celebrated in the Polish language

ANGEL TREE DONORS
I would like to express my personal gratitude to those who
responded to the Angel Tree requests. The toys, games and
books will put a smile on the children’s faces and will keep
them occupied for a while. I am profoundly thankful for the
tuition assistance which will help needy families whose circumstances may have changed recently. Your generosity
will allow us to provide a solid Catholic education and form
their character for life. Your gifts for the school technology
program will be used for upgrades. Donations for heating
will be distributed to parishioners who need help in paying
utilities.
Thank you for your support in making a difference in the
lives of many people. God Bless You!
CHRISTMAS AT ST. JOSEPH BASILICA
Celebrating Christmas at our Basilica is a very unique and
rewarding experience. Our choirs, including the children’s
choir under the direction of Robert Wojcik with the accompaniment of talented musicians provided the special musical
“aura” during the Liturgy.
Many from near and far joined us for this celebration and
it was a pleasure to meet all our visitors and accept their
greetings and good wishes.
We are indebted to many who combined their talents and
to make Christmas 2013 at St. Joseph Basilica another
memorable annual experience.
HAPPY NEW YEAR
As the year 2013 wanes, a new year will be ushered in and
greeted by thousands of people across the world. We all
have different visions of what lies ahead for us.
First of all we should give thanks for all blessings received
this year especially the gift of life, good health and good
friends.
As we look forward to 2014 and make resolutions we must
remember those who do not worship or have drifted away
and we must offer our outreach and discipleship to them to
be “called home”. We look forward to the opening of our
new gym in early Spring. Please pray for our school and
parish. Happy New Year to All!

SCHOOL NEWS
Faculty, students and staff celebrated an early Christmas
Dinner in the cafeteria this past Wednesday. They shared
the oplatek (wafer) sang carols in Polish, French and Spanish
and enjoyed a dinner of ham, potatoes, veggies, rolls with
jello for dessert.
We thank Mr. Cushing, Mr. Skrocki,
Robert Wojcik, Rich Cushing, Eugene Rudnicki, David
Trites, Cindi Bourbeau, Sr. Jeanne, Sr. Valenta and Sr. Mary
Ann. We appreciate everyone’s help.
Our Christmas Pageant actors and actresses were treated to
cookies and ice cream in the school cafeteria for their fine
stage presentation last Sunday at the Bartlett Auditorium.
Both of these treats were compliments of Monsignor
Czarnecki.
Later in the day the children, faculty and staff enjoyed the
Charlie Cook Christmas Show on Wed., which showcased
the musical talents of our students.
National Migration Week– will be observed across the
country from January 5-11. In our parish we will celebrate
Migration Day on Sunday, at 9:30am Family Mass. This
year’s theme is “Out of the Darkness.”
Update on Gym - The Lauring Company is working with
National Grid to replace the electrical pole which is an obstacle to the construction. Trenches are being dug for a new
transformer which will be one source of electricity for the
school as well as the new building. You probably noticed that
the rebars arrived and are being inserted in the foundation of
the project.
Catholic School Week will be celebrated from Sun., Jan.
26th through Sat., Feb. 1st.
This year’s theme is
“Community faith knowledge and service”.
UPCOMING EVENTS
St. Mary’s Jr/Sr High School in Worcester is hosting
Open house/shadow day - Wednesday, January 8, 2014.
March for Life-will take place on Wed., Jan. 22, 2014 in
Washington, DC. You may begin to plan for this 41st annual
march now. Busses will leave Worcester on Tues., Jan. 21
following the Respect Life Mass and travel to DC for the
Mass at the Basilica of National Shrine of the Immaculate
Conception in the morning, followed by the march at noon.
Busses will return to Worcester on Thurs., Jan. 23. Cost is
$80 per seat for registrations postmarked by Dec. 31 & $90
thereafter.
Adult Bible Study - St. Anthony of Padua is again having
two Bible Studies classes that anyone is invited to attend.
Attendees have been coming from many different churches in
the area. Monday’s class starts at 9:30am and is on the Exile
in the Old Testament. Wednesday's class starts at 6pm and

NIEDZIELA ŚWIĘTEJ RODZINY

Święta Rodzina. Maryja i Józef
bezgranicznie ufali Bogu. Dlatego też
potrafili zaufać sobie nawzajem i Panu
Jezusowi, choć być może niejednokrotnie – jak w dzisiejszej Ewangelii – nie
rozumieli tego, co im powiedział, tego, co miał
czynić. Oni jednak trwali przy sobie w miłości, którą
rozlewał Pan Bóg w ich sercach, którą obdarzał ich
Syn, Ten, którego mieli przy sobie, ale i z drżeniem
serca szukali. Oni trwali w bezinteresownej służbie i
posłuszeństwie, którego uczył ich ich On sam –
przez całe życie będąc posłusznym. Posłusznym aż
do śmierci.
PIERWSZY PIĄTEK
Zapraszamy na pierwszy piątek miesiąca,

ANGEL GIVING TREE
Chciałbym wyrazić moją osobistą wdzięczność tym, którzy odpowiedzieli na prośby o wsparcie znajdujące
się na Angel Giving Tree. Zabawki, gry i książki z pewnością wywołają uśmiechy na twarzach dzieci i dadzą
im dużo radości z zabawy. Jestem głęboko wdzięczny za pomoc i wsparcie na rzecz opłat za naukę w szkole,
które pomogą potrzebującym rodzinom, których sytuacja finansowa stała się trudna w ostatnim czasie i jest im
ciężko zdobyć środki na wykształcenie swych dzieci w szkole katolickiej. Wasze prezenty ofiarowane na rzecz
programu technologicznego będą użyte do unowocześnienia wyposażenia dydaktycznego naszej szkoły.
Ofiary na ogrzewanie będą przekazywane do parafian, którzy potrzebują pomocy w opłaceniu rachunków za

OLTAR GUILD
Wyrażamy głęboką wdzięczność dla Altar Guild,
z Ferdynandem i Sylvią Kitka na czele, za wielki
wysiłek włożony w stworzenie pięknych,
tradycyjnych dekoracji świątecznych w naszej
Bazylice. Wolontariusze, w tym wielu parafian,
gości i przyjaciół, pracowali bez wytchnienia,
aby przygotować naszą Bazylikę na święto
Narodzenia
Pańskiego.
Dziękujemy
bardzo
serdecznie.
NOWA PŁYTA CD Z KOLĘDAMI
Z dumą prezentujemy nową płytę z kolędami
nagraną pod kierunkiem naszego organisty, Roberta
Wójcika z udziałem chóru naszej Bazyliki. Chórowi
towarzyszyło
w
czasie
nagrania
wielu
utalentowanych muzyków, co sprawia, że
prezentowana płyta jest wyjątkowa i przyjemna w
odbiorze. Płyty można nabyć w cenie 10 dolarów za
sztukę. Płyty CD są dostępne na plebanii.
SZCZĘŚLIWEGO NOWEGO ROKU
Nowy Rok jest okazją do dziękowania Bogu za
nowy czas, który nam daje, bo w tym czasie
dokonuje się proces naszego zbawienia. Nowy Rok
wiąże się też z naszymi postanowieniami i
zadaniami. Do ich wypełnienia potrzebna jest
wytrwałość, ponieważ będziemy musieli się
zmierzyć z nowymi problemami i obciążeniami.
Bądźmy więc wytrwali w modlitwie, we współpracy
z innymi ludźmi, w szerzeniu dobra, w składaniu
świadectwa wiary oraz w dążeniu do zażyłości z
Bogiem. Pan Jezus powiedział: „…kto wytrwa do
końca, będzie zbawiony”.
Nowy Rok to początek kolejnej szansy. Szansy na
naprawienie zła i niesprawiedliwości wobec innych
ludzi. W kolejnym roku możemy zacząć wszystko
jeszcze raz. Po to są postanowienia noworoczne. To
swego rodzaju plan naprawy samego siebie, aby stać
się lepszym człowiekiem i zbliżyć się do Boga.
ŚWIĘTO RODZINY
Święto świętej Rodziny zaczęto obchodzić w różnych krajach i diecezjach od wieku XVIII. Po raz pierwszy
ustanowił je 4 listopada 1684 r. w Kanadzie, za aprobatą papieża Aleksandra VII, biskup Francois
Montmorency-Laval. Na stałe do liturgii wprowadzono je za pontyfikatu papieża Leon XIII, który na prośbę
kard. Bausa, arcybiskupa Florencji, 20 listopada 1890 r. wydał dekret aprobujący "kult czci zwrócony ku
Rodzinie Świętej". Zatwierdził je papież Leon XIII (+ 1903). W swoich pismach, m.in. w Neminem fugit (z
14 czerwca 1892 r.) i Cum nuper niejeden raz zachęcał on do naśladowania Najświętszej Rodziny. Wskazywał
też na dobrodziejstwa, jakich można oczekiwać dzięki pobożności i związkom ze Świętą Rodziną: postęp w
miłosierdziu, świętość obyczajów, atmosfera pobożności. W jednej ze swoich encyklik napisał: "Pod opieką
Najświętszej Matki i św. Józefa w zupełnym ukryciu wychowywał się Jezus, Słońce sprawiedliwości, zanim
swym blaskiem oświecił narody. Niewątpliwie jaśniała w tej Rodzinie wzajemna miłość, świętość obyczajów
i pobożne ćwiczenia - jednym słowem wszystko, co rodzinę może uszlachetnić i ozdobić, aby dać na wzór
naszym czasom". Leon XIII był też pierwszym, który wskazał na małżeństwo jako miejsce uświęcenia
(Arcanum divinae sapientiae), nadrabiając wielowiekowy brak spojrzenia na rodzinę jako na miejsce postępu
duchowego i służby w Kościele. Papież Benedykt XV (+ 1922) rozszerzył święto świętej Rodziny na cały
Kościół.
Kiedy więc papież Benedykt XV ustanowił święto Najświętszej Rodziny w 1921 roku, nie wprowadzał on
nowego do liturgii Kościoła nabożeństwa, ale rozciągnął tylko na wszystkie diecezje i narody nabożeństwo,
które było już bardzo znane w całym świecie katolickim. W liście Episkopatu Polski do wiernych z 23
października 1968 roku czytamy: "Dziś ma miejsce święto przedziwne; nie święto Pańskie ani Matki
Najświętszej, ani jednego ze świętych, ale święto Rodziny. O niej teraz usłyszymy w tekstach Mszy świętej, o
niej dziś mówi cała liturgia Kościoła. Jest to święto Najświętszej Rodziny - ale jednocześnie święto każdej
rodziny. Bo słowo «rodzina» jest imieniem wspólnym Najświętszej Rodziny z Nazaretu i każdej rodziny.
Każda też rodzina, podobnie jak Rodzina Nazaretańska, jest pomysłem Ojca niebieskiego i do każdej zaprosił
się na stałe Syn Boży. Każda rodzina pochodzi od Boga i do Boga prowadzi".
