They were all astounded and glorified God, saying, ‘We have never seen anything like this.”’ Have you taken any time lately to think about how truly good God has been to you? He may not have to cure your paralysis if He has already given you the gift of mobility. But do we glorify and thank Him for such simple gifts as sight, and speech and general health? Do we generously give back to God in proportion to all the many blessings He has given to us? Word of Life. The Church’s position on the matter of abortion is unambiguous. The child in his or her mother’s womb is a human life which must be protected. Abortion, which is the destruction of an innocent unborn child, is contrary to God’s will, for the value and dignity of human life must be protected from conception to natural death. The Church . . . Must be committed to offering help and support to women and couples tempted to seek an abortion, while remaining close to those who have had this tragic experience and helping them to grow in respect for life. She acknowledges the courage of governments that have legislated against the culture of death—of which abortion is a dramatic expression—in favor of the culture of life. SEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME February 19, 2012 It is I, I, who wipe out, for my own sake, your offenses; your sins I remember no more. —Isaiah 43:25 FORGIVENESS OF SINS Isaiah announced the word of the Lord: “See, I am doing something new!” And what was this new thing? A promise for a people who “did not call upon me” and “grew weary of me”; a promise of forgiveness. “It is I, I, who wipe out . . . Your offenses; / your sins I remember no more”. Paul told the Corinthians—and tells us—that Jesus is God’s ”yes,” and that all God’s promises are fulfilled in Jesus. Does that include God’s promise to forgive sins? Mark gives the answer when he relates how some people lowered a paralytic through a hole in the roof, seeking a cure. As far as we can tell, no one requested forgiving the man’s sins. But that’s what Jesus did, exactly as Isaiah had announced. Then, lest anyone doubt his authority on earth to forgive sins, Jesus said, “Pick up your mat, and go home”. The man “rose, picked up his mat at once, and went away. The second collection this week is for Utilities & Energy. Next week’s second collection is designated for the Church in Latin America. We believe utilizing tools like Facebook will help us meet these objectives. Using Facebook, we will share the most current campaign-related information and updates more frequently. Please help us reach our goal of 300 Likes. Please visit www.facebook.com/ PartnersInCharity Reminder - Now is the time to subscribe to the Catholic Free Press or to renew your subscription. Polish Saturday School and the 125th Jubilee Committee would like to thank everyone who joined us for the traditional Valentine dance on Saturday, February 11th at PACC. Those in attendance enjoyed a table of assorted hors d'oeuvres prepared by the Jubilee Committee, delicious buffet dinner (including two kinds of pierogis) prepared by Maria Czapnik from Worcester, and the huge selection of homemade desserts provided by the parents of the Saturday School children. We would like to thank Ursula Kokosinski for treating us to “paczki” (Polish donuts) which is a traditional dessert with which we bid farewell to the carnival season before Lent. Music was provided by the live band “Sygnal” from New Britain, CT. Highlight of the evening was a performance by recently formed adult branch of the “Piast” folk group who presented the traditional Polish dance “Polonaise”. This social event was indeed a sign of mutual friendship within our Parish Family. Thank you! LENTEN REGULATIONS Lenten fast and abstinence regulations for the Diocese of Worcester are as follows: Abstinence from meat is to be observed by all Catholics fourteen (14) years of age and older on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday and all the Fridays of Lent. Those who are bound to fast may take only one full meal. Two smaller meals are permitted if necessary to maintain strength according to one’s needs, but eating solid foods between meals is not permitted. Catholics should not lightly excuse themselves from these prescribed Lenten penitential practices. LENTEN SCHEDULE Ash Wednesday. The Lenten season is marked with three important Penance practices: fasting, prayer and almsgiving. DONATIONS Saint Joseph Basilica-In memory of Alphonse Kozub; $100 from family and friends. In memory of Bessie Tremblay; $50 from Appleton Papers and Elizabeth Sabaj. In memory of Helen Baron; $75 given by American Legion Post 41. In memory of Georgette Scarglia; $50 given by Dorothy Cozzens. Saint Joseph School Music Fund-In memory of Terry Miller; $50 from M/M Joseph Ryzewski; $25 M/M Mark Miller. 125th Anniversary Jubilee Fund-I am pleased to report that our parishioners donated $3579 during the month of January. I am grateful for all these donations especially those who fulfilled their $1000 pledge. The Jubilee Celebration Day is only a few months away and the work to be done is substantial and time consuming, therefore we would like to begin after Easter. Some of the issues which must be addressed include cooling and heating systems, in the church, finishing the entrance of the Basilica, the sound system in the church and also the Our Lady of Czestochowa Chapel, etc. Every family is affected by these difficult economic times and yet we have to respond to various charities including the Church. Various religious denominations are faithfully giving 10% to the church, from unexpected financial blessings, inheritance, sale of property, etc. In our conscience in total honesty before God we have to make our personal decisions. JUBILEE YEAR With the beginning of the Lenten Season and our Jubilee Year, it would be appropriate to take a look across the generations of our ancestors and ponder who we are? What we stand for? Do we live up the values of our forefathers? It is clearly evident that sense of community, goodness, holiness and adherence to the Church principals bound the previous generations together. In that environment they not only described ,but truly demonstrated their virtues, formed their character and developed their Catholic identity. They lived as a family and from the family they learned about generosity, hospitality, fairness even if the family was not perfect. No one of the family embodies all of the virtuous and positive traits, nevertheless the family collectively portrays what kind of person we want to be. In other words, values belong first to the family, before the individual acquires them. Whatever we learned from our families, the majority of us were able to preserve it against the external forces such as secular culture or influence of the internet, etc., which brutally invades our family life. The Lenten Season should help us to get in touch with the roots of our families with the heritage of our parish and values which formed our Catholic personality. Through personal prayer, retreat and our good deeds we want to “return home” to the legacy of our ancestors. Page 4 OFFICE OF RELIGIOUS EDUCATION No Religious Ed Classes-on Feb. 20th—Winter Break. On pozostaje wierny danemu słowu. W takich okolicznościach ludzie rozwijali swoje osobowości i formowali swoje charaktery. Wykorzystajmy czas jaki daje nam Wielki Post, abyśmy poprzez dobre uczynki, osobistą modlitwę, rekolekcje, uczynki miłosierdzia, w świadomości spuścizny przekazanej nam przez poprzednie pokolenia, powracali do domu rodzinnych wartości.
