THE GIFT OF PEACE
We are offered another vision in
today’s second reading, a vision of
the New Jerusalem, “coming down
out of heaven from God” Read
between the lines describing the radiant city, and we find that the greatest
beauty revealed is the beauty of
perfect symmetry and order, a city
founded on the faith of the twelve tribes of Israel and the
Twelve Apostles, lit only by the glory of God. The first
reading and the Gospel are linked to this idealized
description of the New Jerusalem. In both we read of
distress and disturbance countered by the gift of peace.
“My peace I give to you,” Jesus assures his disciples at the
Last Supper. In keeping with that gift, the apostles and
elders, in the reading from Acts, decide not to disturb the
peace of new Gentile believers. The undue burden of circumcision will not be imposed on them. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
Liturgy of the Day Ascension Thursday
Today’s celebration is a reminder that
we live in the time between Christ’s
first coming and his second coming,
between his ascension and the final
day at the end of time. In this
in-between time we have a job to do:
we are to continue his mission on
earth. As we gather today at God’s
invitation, may our prayer be to
remain faithful and diligent disciples
until the end. At the end of today’s Gospel, we hear
that the apostles left the site of Jesus’ ascension with
great joy. How could they be so happy at his departure? They knew that he would be with them from
then on in everything they did. As we hear God’s
holy word proclaimed today, let us listen for clues to
how we too can be people of joy, continually praising
God.

ALL THE ADVANTAGES
His sacrifice for us.
We want to give our children what we didn’t have; but
let’s make sure we give them what we did have: our faith.

Maryja - Nauczycielką modlitwy (cz. II)
Drugi rodzaj modlitwy, o którym dwukrotnie
wspomina św. Łukasz (2,19.51), to „rozważanie w
sercu”, czyli medytacja, kontemplacja. Maryja
rozważała to, co o Jezusie objawili aniołowie
pasterzom. Inni poprzestali na dziwieniu się tym, co
mówili pasterze; Ona rozważała to w swoim sercu.
Rozważała także słowa swojego Syna, który
powiedział, gdy Go odnaleziono w świątyni
jerozolimskiej: „Potrzeba, abym był w sprawach
Ojca mojego”. Maryja wnikała w słowa Jezusa.
Słowa te są zawarte w Ewangelii. I znowu mamy
by rozważał w swoim sercu”. Wielki mistrz
modlitwy, współczesny teolog Tomasz Merton, tak
pisze o modlitwie kontemplacyjnej: „To właściwie
owe pozornie bezużyteczne elementy życia
modlitwy, kontemplacja, cisza i «pustka» czynią
życie prawdziwie życiem. Bez kontemplacji liturgia
staje się jedynie pobożnym widowiskiem, a
paraliturgiczna modlitwa – zwykłą paplaniną. Bez
kontemplacji modlitwa myślna jest tylko jałowym
ćwiczeniem
umysłu.
Bez
kontemplacji
i
wewnętrznej modlitwy Kościół nie może wypełnić
swej misji przemiany i zbawienia ludzkości. Bez
kontemplacji obróci się w sługę cynicznych potęg
doczesnego świata, niezależnie od tego, jak gorąco
jego
wierni
będą
zapewniali
o
swoim
zaangażowaniu w walkę o królestwo Boże”. Wiele
w
naszym
życiu
zależy
od
modlitwy
kontemplacyjnej.
Maryja rozważająca w swym sercu słowa i
czyny Jezusa przypomina Kościołowi wszystkich
czasów, co powinno być treścią rozważania – a
powinno nią być słowo Boże, Ewangelia. Psałterz
był Jej modlitewnikiem i śpiewnikiem, zaś słowa i
czyny Jezusa, słowa o Jezusie – księgą medytacji.
