“...We have now arrived at the heart of Holy Week, the culmination
of the Lenten journey. Tomorrow we shall enter the Easter Triduum,
the three holy days in which the Church commemorates the mystery
of the Passion, death and Resurrection of Jesus.
The Son of God, who, after becoming man in obedience to the Father, similar to us in all things save sin (cf. Heb 4:15), accepted to
do the Father’s will to the very end. He accepted the Passion and
the Cross out of love for us, to enable us to share in his Resurrection so that, in him and for him, we might live for ever in consolation
and in peace.
I therefore urge you to accept this mystery of salvation and to participate intensely in the Easter Triduum, the fulcrum of the entire
Liturgical Year and a time of special grace for every Christian. I
invite you in these days to seek recollection and prayer, so as to
draw more deeply from this source of grace. In this regard, with a
view to the forthcoming celebrations every Christian is asked to
celebrate the sacrament of Reconciliation, a moment of special
adherence to the death and Resurrection of Christ, to be able to
participate more fruitfully in Holy Easter...”

and Abstinence (no meat) in the Catholic
Church. Abstinence from meat is to be observed
by all Catholics 14 years old and older.
Fasting regulations are to be observed by
Catholics who are 18 yrs of age but not yet 59.
One full meal and two smaller meals are permitted, if necessary, to maintain strength according
to one’s needs; however, eating solid foods between meals is not
permitted.

Palm Sunday of the Passion of The Lord
Luke 22:14—23:56 (shorter form: Luke 23:1-49)
From the cross, Jesus speaks words of forgiveness and promises
that the good thief will be with him in paradise.
Background on the Gospel Reading
This Sunday, called Palm or Passion Sunday, is the first day of
Holy Week. Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and the Easter Vigil on
Holy Saturday are called the Triduum, three days that are the highlight of the Church year. There are two Gospels proclaimed at today's Mass. The first Gospel, proclaimed before the procession
with palms, tells of Jesus' triumphant entrance into Jerusalem.
Riding on a borrowed colt, Jesus was hailed by the crowds as they
shouted blessings and praise to God. This event is reported in
each of the four Gospels.
Luke's Gospel is the only one to report the exchange between Jesus and the Pharisees as Jesus enters Jerusalem. Jesus' response
shows that this event, and those yet to come, are part of a divine
plan. We hear this echoed again in Luke's description of the Last
Supper when Jesus speaks of Judas' betrayal, saying that the Son
of Man “goes as has been determined.”
At the Liturgy of the Word on this Sunday, the events of Jesus'
passion are proclaimed in their entirety. In Lectionary Cycle C, we
read the passion of Jesus as found in the Gospel of Luke. We will
hear these events proclaimed again during the Triduum when we
read the passion of Jesus from the Gospel of John.
Throughout Luke's Gospel we see that Jesus' words and actions
proclaim the Kingdom of God. This motif continues throughout
Luke's passion narrative. Jesus appears to be in total command of
events at the Passover meal as he hands over the kingdom to his
disciples. He welcomes them to the Passover meal announcing
that this will be his last until the Kingdom of God is fulfilled.
As throughout Luke's Gospel, however, the disciples show little
understanding of this kingdom that Jesus often announces. Following the meal, the disciples argue about who is the greatest. Jesus
takes the opportunity to distinguish the meaning of leadership in
the Kingdom of God from the forms of leadership seen in the world.
Jesus initiates a conversation with Simon and predicts his denial.
Jesus then instructs his disciples to prepare themselves for the
events that will follow. His words reveal an awareness of the challenges that all of them will face in the days ahead. As the disciples
and Jesus enter the Mount of Olives, Jesus indicates the importance of the disciples' time in prayer, telling them that through
prayer they will be able to face the challenges ahead.
As he prays, Jesus is tested. In the garden, an angel is sent to
strengthen him and to prepare him for the events ahead. After this
moment, Jesus is again in charge of the events and circumstances.
In Luke's Gospel, Jesus is portrayed as active and vocal throughout his passion. When one of the disciples strikes the high priest's
servant, Jesus heals the man, an event reported only in the Gospel
of Luke. Jesus stops the disciples' protest against his arrest by
noting that this is the “time for the power of darkness.” Jesus engages and responds when brought before the Sanhedrin; his words
speak about the “power of God” that will bring about the reign of
the Son of Man. When questioned by Pilate, Jesus responds with

just one phrase; yet before Herod, Jesus refuses to speak.
When Luke describes the Way of the Cross and Jesus' crucifixion,
he calls to our attention many events that are not reported in the
other Gospels. Throughout his Gospel, Luke has paid heed to the
women who accompanied Jesus. Now, on the road to Calvary,
Jesus speaks to the women who walk with him. Only Luke reports
Jesus' words of forgiveness spoken from the cross. And only Luke
reports the dialogue between Jesus and the good thief. Finally, in
contrast with the Gospels of Mark and Matthew, Luke reports no
words of abandonment spoken by Jesus on the cross. Instead,
Jesus, in full command until his death, commends his spirit to his
Father and takes his final breath.
Throughout Holy Week, we will continue to reflect on the events of
Jesus' passion and death. As we meditate on the cross, we ask
again and anew what it means to make the statement of faith that
Jesus, in his obedient suffering and dying, revealed himself to us
as God's Son and brought to fulfillment the Kingdom of God.
We wish to thank our Religious Education students and
their families for their generous contribution of $529.15 to the Rice Bowl campaign. This
money will be send to the Catholic Relief Service. This organization provides for those in need throughout the world.

En aquel tiempo, Jesús echó a andar delante, subiendo hacia
Jerusalén. Al acercarse a Betfagé y Betania, junto al monte llamado de los Olivos, mandó a dos discípulos, diciéndoles: "Id a la
aldea de enfrente; al entrar, encontraréis un borrico atado, que
nadie ha montado todavía. Desatadlo y traedlo. Y si alguien os
pregunta: "¿Por qué lo desatáis?", contestadle: "El Señor lo necesita". Ellos fueron y lo encontraron como les había dicho. Mientras
desataban el borrico, los dueños les preguntaron: "¿Por qué desatáis el borrico?" Ellos contestaron: "El Señor lo necesita." Se lo
llevaron a Jesús, lo aparejaron con sus mantos y le ayudaron a
montar. Según iba avanzando, la gente alfombraba el camino con
los mantos. Y, cuando se acercaba ya la bajada del monte de los
Olivos, la masa de los discípulos, entusiasmados, se pusieron a
alaba¡ a Dios a gritos, por todos los milagros que habían visto,
diciendo: "¡Bendito el que viene como rey, en nombre del Señor!
Paz en el cielo y gloria en lo alto."

Dicho esto, Jesús elevó los ojos al cielo y
exclamó: “Padre, ha llegado la hora;
¡glorifica a tu Hijo para que tu Hijo te dé
gloria a tí!

Jezus ruszył na przedzie, zdążając do Jerozolimy.
Gdy przyszedł w pobliże Betfage i Betanii, do góry
zwanej Oliwną, wysłał dwóch spośród uczniów, mówiąc: Idźcie do wsi, która jest naprzeciwko, a wchodząc do niej, znajdziecie oślę uwiązane, którego jeszcze nikt nie dosiadł. Odwiążcie je i przyprowadźcie
tutaj. A gdyby was kto pytał: Dlaczego odwiązujecie?, tak powiecie: Pan go potrzebuje. Wysłani poszli
i znaleźli wszystko tak, jak im powiedział. A gdy
odwiązywali oślę, zapytali ich jego właściciele: Czemu odwiązujecie oślę? Odpowiedzieli: Pan go potrzebuje. I przyprowadzili je do Jezusa, a zarzuciwszy na nie swe płaszcze, wsadzili na nie Jezusa. Gdy
jechał, słali swe płaszcze na drodze. Zbliżał się już
do zboczy Góry Oliwnej, kiedy całe mnóstwo
uczniów poczęło wielbić radośnie Boga za wszystkie
cuda, które widzieli. I wołali głośno: Błogosławiony
Król, który przychodzi w imię Pańskie. Pokój w niebie i chwała na wysokościach. Lecz niektórzy faryzeusze spośród tłumu rzekli do Niego: Nauczycielu,
zabroń tego swoim uczniom. Odrzekł: Powiadam
wam: Jeśli ci umilkną, kamienie wołać będą.

W Eucharystii, Jezus oddaje się w nasze ręce.
W jaki sposób ja daję siebie Bogu?

Wielki Tydzień - czas bezpośrednio poprzedzający Święta Wielkanocne - wykształcał się w
liturgii stopniowo. Początkowo sam post przed
Wielkanocą trwał zaledwie 3 dni. Z czasem
wprowadzono okres 40-dniowego postu - i wyróżniono Wielki Tydzień. Na treść wydarzeń
Wielkiego Tygodnia składają się triumfalny
wjazd Pana Jezusa do Jerozolimy w Niedzielę Palmową, ostatnie dyskusje Chrystusa z Sanhedrynem w świątyni, przepowiednie Chrystusa o
zburzeniu Jerozolimy i o końcu świata, Ostatnia Wieczerza i Męka Pańska, wreszcie chwalebne Zmartwychwstanie. Obrzędy liturgiczne tych
dni są tak wkomponowane, aby ułatwić odtworzenie tych wypadków,
bezpośrednio związanych z tajemnicą odkupienia rodzaju ludzkiego,
pobudzić do refleksji i wielkiej wdzięczności, doprowadzić do pojednania
się w sakramencie Pokuty, odnowić w Kościele pierwotną gorliwość w
służbie Bożej. Wielki Tydzień ma tak wysoką rangę w liturgii Kościoła,
że nie dopuszcza nawet uroczystości. Gdyby zaś takie wypadły, odkłada się je na czas po Wielkanocy i jej oktawie (np. uroczystość Zwiastowania).
Wielki Tydzień otwiera Niedziela Palmowa. Nazwa tego dnia pochodzi
od wprowadzonego w XI w. zwyczaju święcenia palm. Liturgia bowiem
wspomina uroczysty wjazd Jezusa do Jerozolimy, bezpośrednio poprzedzający Jego Mękę i Śmierć na Krzyżu. Witające go tłumy rzucały na
drogę płaszcze oraz gałązki, wołając: "Hosanna Synowi Dawidowemu".
O uroczystym wjeździe Pana Jezusa do Jerozolimy piszą wszyscy czterej Ewangeliści. Samo to świadczy, jak wielką rangę przywiązują do
tego wydarzenia z życia Jezusa Chrystusa.
"Święte Triduum Paschalne Męki i Zmartwychwstania Pańskiego jaśnieje jako szczyt całego roku liturgicznego. Triduum Paschalne rozpoczyna
się Mszą Wieczerzy Pańskiej, osiąga swój szczyt w Wigilii Paschalnej i
kończy się nieszporami Zmartwychwstania Pańskiego" - czytamy w
kalendarzu liturgicznym. Wielki Czwartek, Wielki Piątek i Wielka Sobota
stanowią trzy etapy jednego wydarzenia zbawczego, którym jest Pascha, czyli przejście Jezusa Chrystusa przez mękę i śmierć do nowego
życia w zmartwychwstaniu. To Misterium Paschalne Chrystusa jest
źródłem życia nadprzyrodzonego dla tych, którzy przez wiarę i chrzest
zostali w Nim zanurzeni.
