Romuald Piekarski (University of Gdańsk, Poland) Aristotle and Kant: Different Understandings of Virtue Post-Hobbesian conventionalism, which in Kant surrounds him and closes him off in the world of spidery constructions of modernity, would eventually detach him from Greek physics and the Christian God. It is in reference to his comprehension of virtue he went away from classical tradition through his doubts in the possibilities of “breeding of feelings”, associated improvements (hexis) with mechanical habits. And he limits himself to the never incessant dramatic tension inherent to the dualistic vision of Man. Continuing on this topic, the Aristotelian conception arêtes appears irrelevant on multiple grounds to followers of Kantian universalism. The attribution to Aristotle identification hexis with sedentary habits unwilling to search for new challenge is the product of the lumping together of neutralized Hume, Shaftesbury and others 18th century British empiricists. To them, It is necessary to reply that, when we have compared Kantian conception of Tugend with arête of Aristotle, we are brought to the unfortunate conclusion that—unintentionally-Kant together with the luminaries of the Enlightenment, contributed to the regard of respectable customs, these which crystallized the moral treasures of virtuous societies. It is thanks to these treasures that the virtuous traditional societies that of the ancient Greeks allowed them to respond to all manner of challenges. Everyone who finds these in their heritage can today still respond to all manner of ill and to the unbalanced achievements of the modern world.
