Moduł ma na celu doskonalenie praktycznej znajomości
języka angielskiego, w zakresie biernym i czynnym,
poprzez rozwinięcie u studentów umiejętności rozumienia
tekstów pisanych i mówionych na poziomie
zaawansowanym oraz poszerzenie zasobu słownictwa.
Istotnym celem modułu jest też zaznajomienie studenta ze
specyfiką tłumaczenia, pisemnego i ustnego,
zróżnicowanych typów tekstów. Moduł zapoznaje
studentów z różnorakimi rejestrami językowymi oraz
kontekstem ich występowania. Przygotowuje studentów
do efektywnego wypowiadania się z zastosowaniem
poznanego słownictwa i zachowaniem schematu
organizacji wypowiedzi właściwego dla danej sytuacji
komunikacyjnej oraz przy doborze odpowiednich form
argumentacji i technik retorycznych. Zaznajamia też z
przebiegiem
procesu
tłumaczenia,
podejściami
właściwymi dla różnych dziedzin, jego ograniczeniami i
sposobami rozwiązywania różnorakich trudności, jakie w
powyższym procesie mogą napotkać studenci.
Celem modułu jest dalsze rozwijanie świadomości
teoretyczno-literackiej studentów oraz ich umiejętności
interpretacyjnych. Moduł przybliża zagadnienia związane
z tendencjami i prądami obecnymi we współczesnych
literaturach anglojęzycznych i poprzez lekturę zarówno
tekstów literackich jak i towarzyszących im tekstów
krytycznych i teoretycznych skupia się na rozwijaniu
umiejętności myślenia analitycznego i krytycznego w celu
wypracowania wysokiej sprawności interpretacyjnej.
The module aims at improving the students’ passive and
active command of English by developing their
comprehension skills of written and spoken advanced
English texts and by broadening their vocabulary. An
important component of the course is related to the
specificities of oral and written translation of various types
of texts. The module introduces students to the contexts of
language registers and the rules regarding their use in
written compositions. The students train effective
communication skills employing recently acquired
vocabulary and organizational schemes appropriate to
specific communicational situations, argumentation and
rhetorical techniques. The module introduces students to
the translation process and to various approaches related
to specific areas of communication as well as to their
potential constraints.
This module aims to further students’ knowledge
connected with literary theory in order to develop their
interpretive skills. By exploring the current tendencies and
phenomena characteristic of particular Anglophone
literatures in the context of relevant critical and theoretical
writings the module enhances analytical thinking and
encourages adopting critical perspectives on literature and
culture at large.

pojęcia z zakresu logiki, semiotyka strukturalistyczna,

problems. Throughout the course, the students become
acquainted with the main premises of the most important
semiotics schools and their influence upon humanities in
general. The discussion explores a broad range of
semiotic concepts, including the definition and structure of
the sign, sign categorization, the fundamentals of logic,
structural semiotics, symbolism, iconicity, metafunctions,
sequential analysis, ideology, communications codes,
social codes, hermeneutic codes, cultural codes, codes of
perception. The theoretical discussion is grounded in a
practical analysis of literary texts, mass media,
advertising, texts of high and popular culture.
Celem modułu jest wprowadzenie do zagadnień
językoznawstwa kontrastywnego, ze szczególnym
uwzględnieniem analizy kontrastywnej języka polskiego i
angielskiego. Studenci zapoznają się z zakresem studiów
kontrastywnych na tle innych form językoznawstwa
porównawczego oraz zostają wprowadzeni w zagadnienia
związane z różnorodnością realizacji podstawowych
uniwersalnych kategorii gramatycznych w różnych
językach, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem języka
angielskiego i polskiego. Studenci poznają główne formy
kontrastów między polskim i angielskim (strukturalny,
kategorialny oraz funkcjonalny) oraz podstawowe różnice
na poziomie frazy rzeczownikowej oraz czasownikowej, a
następnie analizę rozszerzoną do poziomu zdaniowego,
uwzględniając zdania złożone, pytania, negacje, zdania
egzystencjalne, stronę bierną i inne formy bezosobowe.
The module introduces basic notions related to the area
of contrastive linguistic studies. Particular attention is paid
to the contrastive analysis of the Polish and English
tongues. The students learn about contrastive linguistic
studies with regard to other forms of comparative
linguistics and are introduced to the aspects of realizations
of basic, universal grammar categories in various
languages, especially Polish and English. The students
are introduced to main forms of contrasts between Polish
and English (structural, categorical and functional) as well
as to fundamental differences on the level of the noun and
verb phrases and, later, on the sentence level, including
relative clauses, questions, negations, existential clauses,
passive voice and other impersonal forms.

skills of academic text editing using the tools of
information technology. During the classes students
become familiar with advanced issues involved in text
editing and learn the standards of text editing, selected
bibliographic standards and style sheets. Students
improve their skills of using word processing programmes,
as well as programmes supporting the processing and
presentation of data (MS Excel, databases, multimedia

course achieve an advanced level of knowledge of text
editing programmes, allowing them to edit their
dissertations and other academic texts. The technical
competences acquired during the course include: the
ability to prepare bibliographies and footnotes in
accordance with chosen standards, knowledge of text
editing software and the advanced functions of word
processing programmes, text editing teamwork skills, the
ability to use spreadsheets and simple databases in the
field of data processing and presentation, the ability to
work with bibliography managers as well as with software
and sites supporting humanities research (Web of
Science, Google Scholar Citations etc.).

thorough training in academic writing with an emphasis on
the characteristics of academic discourse and its written
forms. The course focuses on helping the students
improve their writing skill and develop new academic

Moduł przybliża zagadnienia związane z podstawowymi
teoriami i strategiami tłumaczenia różnorodnych tekstów w
języku angielskim (literackich i nieliterackich) oraz ma na
celu wykształcenie praktycznych umiejętności tłumaczenia
tych tekstów.
Ponadto, moduł rozwija umiejętności studentów w

skills necessary to translate such texts.
Furthermore, the module develops the students’ skills of
creative writing, introducing aspects of the storyline and
plots, integrating these elements with those already
familiar to the students (character and characterization,
types of narration, dialogues) and emphasising genre and
stylistic differences. The aim of the module is to prepare
students to their own creative work with and within various
genre formats.

Kurs stawia sobie za cel przybliżenie studentom
podstawowych zagadnień kulturowych zarówno w ujęciu
synchronicznym jak i diachronicznym za szczególnym
uwzględnieniem ich teoretyczno- filozoficznego zaplecza.
Jako przedmiot zdecydowanie interdyscyplinarny porusza
zatem w równym stopniu problematykę teoretycznej
refleksji nad współczesnymi i historycznymi zjawiskami
kulturowymi jak i prezentuje cały szereg ich praktycznych

The course offers an interdisciplinary, diachronic and
synchronic study of fundamental aspects of culture
approached from a theoretical-philosophical perspective. It
concentrates on a theoretical and historical exploration of
selected aspects of culture to present their practical
manifestations and variety of representations. In general,
the course is a theoretically rich and contextually broad
analysis of cultural phenomena and their social-cultural
genealogies.

Przekład jako zjawisko kulturowe to przedmiot w
nowatorski sposób łączący zagadnienia z teorii i praktyki
przekładu z metodologią studiów kulturowych. Celem
zajęć jest uświadomienie studentom zależności między
możliwością postrzeżenia zjawisk/bytów we własnym
języku (metanarracji własnej kultury) a postrzeganiem
zjawisk/bytów w języku obcym (metanarracji innej kultury)
i ułatwienia rozumienia mechanizmów funkcjonowania
tekstów (także intersemiotycznych) w kontekście kultury,
w której powstały. W efekcie student rozpoznaje
zależność pomiędzy przyjętymi (lub odziedziczonymi)
normami translatorskimi a decyzjami podejmowanymi w
trakcie tłumaczenia i potrafi przenieść wiedzę teoretyczną
na grunt własnej praktyki interpretacyjnej i decyzji
translatorskich.
“Translation as a cultural phenomenon” is an innovative
course addressing problems of theory and practice of
translation in light of major methodological approaches to
literary and cultural studies. The objectives of the course
are the following: to make students aware of the
interdependence between one’s capability of perceiving
phenomena/entities in one’s own language and in
metanarratives of one’s own culture and the ability to
perceive phenomena/entities in another language and in
metanarratives of another culture; to enhance their
understanding of the mechanisms responsible for the
functioning of texts (including intersemiotic texts) in the
context of the culture in which they came into existence.
As a result, the student gains the ability to recognize and
acknowledge the relationship between adopted or
inherited cultural norms and translation-related norms, and
thereby also to see the consequences of the
interconnectedness between these norms and particular
decisions made while translating.
In effect, the student is capable of implementing his or her
theoretical knowledge in his or her own interpretive
practice, thus obtaining indispensable tools to make
informed translatological choices.

Moduł ma na celu pogłębienie i dalsze doskonalenie przez
studentów praktycznej umiejętności tłumaczenia tekstów
literackich. Studenci zdobywają bardziej zaawansowana
wiedzę na temat strategii i metod przekładu oraz uczą się
odnosić ją do tekstu o większym stopniu skomplikowania
w celu znalezienia rozwiązań wyodrębnionych problemów
i stworzenia tekstu o jak największych walorach
literackich. Stosują tez w przekładzie wiedzę o literaturze i
kulturze oraz zaawansowane kompetencje językowe.
Istotnym elementem modułu jest kształtowanie
umiejętności bardzo wnikliwej analizy tekstu, samodzielnej
bądź na forum, w celu opracowania i przyjęcia najbardziej
adekwatnej strategii tłumaczeniowej oraz efektywnego
zorganizowania czasu pracy.
The course’s aim is to develop students’ practical abilities
to translate literary texts. Students acquire the knowledge
of various methods and strategies of translation. They
learn how to apply those strategies to various literary texts
in order to produce texts of equivalent literary value.
During the process of translation they use their literary and
cultural knowledge as well as advanced language skills.
An important aspect of the course is to practice the ability
of close reading and interpretation of literary texts in order
to apply the most effective translation strategy and time
management.

Moduł ma na celu dalsze doskonalenie praktycznej
znajomości języka angielskiego poprzez rozwinięcie u
studentów umiejętności rozumienia tekstów pisanych i
mówionych na poziomie CPE oraz poszerzenie czynnego
i biernego zasobu słownictwa, w tym także
specjalistycznego z zakresu min. podróży, rozrywki,
transportu, emocji i innych dziedzin. Moduł pogłębia też
wiedzę studentów na temat elementów tekstu literackiego,
oraz wprowadza dalsze elementy takie jak punkt widzenia,
manipulacja perspektywą czy „szczegół znaczący”.
Zaznajamia on studentów z technikami oddziaływania na
czytelnika poprzez emocje. Ważnym elementem modułu
jest tez motywowanie studentów do kreatywnego
odnoszenia się do danych tematów czy teorii literackich,
oraz samodzielnego poszukiwania inspiracji czy środków
wyrazu, które najbardziej trafiałyby do odbiorcy.
The module aims to further students’ practical knowledge
and skills of English by developing their skills related to
the comprehension of written and spoken English on an
advanced level (CPE) and by broadening their vocabulary,
including specialised vocabulary related to travel,
entertainment, transport, emotions and other areas of
activity. The module also broadens students’ knowledge of
the elements of a literary text and introduces other
aspects, such as the point of view, manipulation of the
perspective or the “meaningful detail”. The students are
acquainted with the techniques of emotional influence on
the reader. They are also continuously motivated to
creatively rework given themes or literary theories and to
independent search for inspiration or ways of expression
particularly effective for their audiences.

stanowi
przekrojowe spojrzenie na problematykę funkcjonowania
środków masowego przekazu (zwłaszcza nowych mediów
elektronicznych) w realiach współczesnych społeczeństw
post-industrialnych. W programie wykładów i ćwiczeń
szczególne znaczenie jest przypisywane ekonomicznym,
politycznym i społecznym (więziotwórczym) funkcjom
mediów masowych oraz ich powiązaniem z
poszczególnymi wymiarami struktury społecznej. Ze
względu na tak sprecyzowany charakter poruszanych
zagadnień, przedmiot stanowi interdyscyplinarne
połączenie teorii i metod badawczych wyrosłych na
gruncie współczesnych badań kulturowych (cultural
studies), socjologii, socjologii ekonomicznej oraz nauk
politycznych.
Aspects of Media Studies is a module presenting a
multifaceted view on the mass media (especially the new
media) in the context of contemporary post-industrial
societies. The lectures and seminars focus on the political,
economic and social (“bond-forming”) functions of the
mass media and their relations with various dimensions of
social structures. This interdisciplinary course combines
theories and methodologies connected with contemporary
cultural studies, social studies, economic sociology and
political sciences.

Praktyki multimedialne, wykraczające swoim znaczeniem
lub formą produkcji i dystrybucji poza tradycyjne
znaczenia audiowizualnych praktyk kulturowych, stają się
coraz ważniejszą formą uczestnictwa w kulturze oraz
zyskują pozycję jednych z ważniejszych form konsumpcji
kultury. Kompetencje praktyczne (współ)tworzenia kultury
poprzez własne produkcje multimedialne wymienianie są
zatem wśród kluczowych kompetencji, niezbędnych do
świadomego uczestnictwa w kulturze. Celem kursu jest
prezentacja i dyskusja najważniejszych stanowisk
teoretycznych, podejmujących tematykę znaczenia form
multimedialnych we współczesnej kulturze, uzupełnione o
praktyczny instruktaż projektowania i tworzenia prostych
autorskich form multimedialnych. Studenci poznają
współczesne praktyki multimedialne, metodologię krytyki
humanistycznej, dotyczącej tych praktyk oraz podstawowe
techniki pracy z multimediami. Studenci kształcą również
umiejętności analizy multimediów oraz procesów

transcending the scopes of traditional audio-visual media,
have become a crucial form of participation in culture.
Obviously, they have also gained an important status
among forms of consumption of culture. Acquiring of
practical competencies of (co)creating of culture by active
participants has become a significant marker of a
conscious participation in culture. This course aims, then,
to address several theoretical approaches to multimedia
practices, their meaning and position in contemporary
culture, as well as to instruct students to design and
create simple original multimedia projects. Through skilloriented practice students learn about the significance of
selected multimedia practices, but also about the
methodologies of humanistic critique of these practices.

i stworzenia tekstu o jak największych walorach
literackich. Stosują tez w przekładzie wiedzę o literaturze i
kulturze oraz zaawansowane kompetencje językowe.
Istotnym elementem modułu jest kształtowanie
umiejętności bardzo wnikliwej analizy tekstu, samodzielnej
bądź na forum, w celu opracowania i przyjęcia najbardziej
adekwatnej strategii tłumaczeniowej oraz efektywnego
zorganizowania czasu pracy.
The course’s aim is to develop students’ practical abilities
to translate literary texts. Students acquire the knowledge
of various methods and strategies of translation. They
learn how to apply those strategies to various literary texts
in order to produce texts of equivalent literary value.
During the process of translation they use their literary and
cultural knowledge as well as advanced language skills.
An important aspect of the course is to practice the ability
of close reading and interpretation of literary texts in order
to apply the most effective translation strategy and time
management.

Celem zajęć jest przygotowanie studentów do tłumaczenia
tekstów specjalistycznych z różnych dziedzin. Ćwiczenia
praktyczne poprzedzone są wstępem z zakresu
traduktologii. Studenci zapoznają się z definicją tekstu
specjalistycznego oraz propozycjami jego klasyfikacji, co
pozwala im właściwie zidentyfikować tego typu tekst i
odróżnić go od innych. Następnie poznają, z punktu
widzenia teorii tłumaczeniowych, specyfikę przekładu
tekstów specjalistycznych: podstawowe problemy,
najczęściej spotykane błędy i stosowane techniki
tłumaczeniowe. Zagadnienia teoretyczne omawiane są w
oparciu o gotowe tłumaczenia lub prace studentów.
Część praktyczna zajęć obejmuje przede wszystkim
tłumaczenie, głównie z języka obcego. Słuchacze pracują
na tekstach o różnym stopniu trudności i tematyce.
Przewidziany jest podział zajęć (i tekstów) na bloki
tematyczne, co umożliwi bardziej szczegółową analizę
terminologii z zakresu wybranych dziedzin. Proponowane
bloki tematyczne to:

The aim of the course is to prepare students for translating
specialised texts from various fields. Practical classes are
preceded with an introduction into the field of translation
studies; students will be familiarized with the definition of a
specialised text and with the suggestions as to its
classification, which will allow them to properly identify
such a type of text and distinguish it from other texts. Then
they will learn the specificity of translating specialised
texts from the point of view of the translation theory,
including: basic problems, the most common errors, and
most often used translation techniques. Theoretical issues
will be discussed on the basis either of translations
prepared by the teacher or students’ works.
The practical part of the course includes translating,
mainly from a foreign language into Polish. Students work
on texts of varying difficulty and subject matter. A division
of the classes (and texts) into thematic sections is
planned, which will enable a more detailed analysis of the
terminology in selected areas. The proposed thematic
sections are:

będącej owocem samodzielnego i twórczego opracowania

Equipped with proper intellectual tools, in the course of the
seminar the student learns to professionally address
problems of their interest within the limits of the expertise
demarcated by the syllabi of all courses within the M.A.
program. As a result, the student gains the capability to
efficiently employ both his or her overall academic
knowledge and his or her skills in using English for
academic writing toward the production of a dissertation
meeting globally accepted standards of academic writing
and sound in terms of the methodology of academic

Celem przedmiotu Wykład Monograficzny jest pewnego
rodzaju resume podstawowego zasobu wiedzy z literatury,
kultury, estetyki oraz filozofii angloamerykańskiej z
elementami kultury europejskiej, by przygotować studenta
do dyskusji w czasie obrony pracy magisterskiej. Jest to
także forma pobudzenia aktywności intelektualnej poprzez
zainteresowanie lekturą tekstów literackich, estetycznych,
filozoficznych, innych niż te, które stanowiły kanon
literacko-teoretyczny w czasie studiów filologicznych.
Wykład ma pobudzić do myślenia i kojarzenia faktów,
zjawisk i koncepcji, ale także do podsumowania wiedzy z
zakresu literatury, kultury i filozofii z elementami estetyki,
etyki, czy innych nauk humanistycznych, by pokazać
interdyscyplinarność wiedzy i zależność jednej dziedziny
od innej. Ma także wskazać praktyczne aspekty zdobytej
wiedzy w życiu codziennym i funkcjonowaniu
społeczności, różnice w chromatycznej kartografii wielu
tożsamości europejskich i pozaeuropejskich. Tematem
wykładu może być np. rola podmiotu w budowaniu
dyskursu literackiego od średniowiecza do okresu
ponowoczesności.

The Monographic Lecture aims at providing a resume of
basic knowledge of literature, culture, aesthetics and
Anglo-American philosophy with the elements of
European culture, which is supposed to prepare the
student for the discussion during the defense of the
student’s M.A. thesis. It also intends to instigate
intellectual activity by means of making the student
interested in reading a different set of literary, aesthetic
and philosophical texts than those which constituted the
literary-theoretical canon during the student’s earlier
philological studies. The lecture aims at making the
student think and associate facts, phenomena and
concepts, but also at summarizing knowledge of literature,
culture and philosophy with the elements of aesthetics in
order to highlight interdisciplinarity of knowledge and
interdependence of various disciplines. The lecture also
intends to show practical aspects of knowledge relevant
for everyday life and functioning of the society, as well as
differences in chromatic cartography of multiple European
and extra-European identities. A possible theme of the
lecture can, for instance, be the role of the subject in the
construction of literary discourse between the Middle Ages
and Modernity. Recalling texts of particular periods and
arranging them chronologically shows gradual changes in
understanding of reality.

Kurs stawia sobie za cel przekazanie zarówno wiedzy
teoretycznej jak i umiejętności praktycznych związanych z

kulturowych. Ćwiczenia koncentrują się zatem w równym
stopniu na lingwistycznej analizie konkretnych tekstów
pod kątem potencjalnych problemów translatorskich jak i

The aim of the course is to convey theoretical knowledge,
as well as to shape practical skills in the field of the
broadly understood translation of texts of culture. The
tutorials concentrate on the linguistic analysis of individual
texts with regard to problems they may present in
translation, as well as provide the students with an
opportunity to apply the theoretical knowledge in practical
translation, taking under consideration the particular
challenges that are posed by translating artifacts of
culture.
