In Sicily (Italy) the contamination by hydrocarbons is principally connected to the damage of industrial brownfield sites. At present time in Europe, a lot of local administrations are engaged to be against the problem and to guarantee the resident population for the health risk, trying to use at best the financial resources by National and European Funds. One of the most promising low cost strategies for the remediation of polluted environments by hydrocarbons is represented from the actions aimed to accelerate in situ the natural process of biodegradation, but there are other solutions and technologies that need more demonstration and diffusion at local level.
