BRONCHIAL ASTHMA IN URBAN AND RURAL CHILDREN OF GRODNO REGION, BELARUS A. Shpakou, T. Neviartovich Yanka Kupala State University of Grodno, Belarus The epidemiological situation of asthma in Grodno region among children and adolescents is rising. Due to the epidemiological data, it can not be excluded that official statistics do not reflect the actual incidence of allergic diseases in general and particularly asthma. Because of lack of similar population-based assessments for children in Belarus we implemented a respiratory health survey of urban and rural school children in the Grodno region. The primary objective of the study was to evaluate the prevalence of asthma its risk factors in urban and rural children. To explore the effects of parental history of asthma and allergy, dampness at home and to pets on the occurrence of the examined diseases. Source of Data. Population based respiratory health survey performed in 2010 (BUPAS Project) included 2606 urban and 2422 rural children, aged 7-15 years. Analysis involved physician-diagnosed asthma reported in questionnaires. The findings showed a low prevalence of asthma with apparent effects of gender, parents allergy, dampness in home and pets at home. The prevalence of asthma were roughly equal in urban and rural areas and was respectively 36 (1.36%) and 33 (1.38%). The main distinguishing parameters between children with asthma were the presence of asthma and allergic diseases in parents’ history and the child's assignment to the male sex (for urban children) and the presence of humidity and mold in house (for rural children). The prevalence of parental asthma was larger in urban families and similar difference was found in relation to parental allergy. The letter finding suggests that some asthma cases could be “labeled” as spastic bronchitis. In general, a low prevalence of asthma (underdiagnosis?) and a lack of conventional associations of analyzed diseases with selected risk factors supports the conclusion that measured occurrence of asthma as diagnosed by physicians is not a decisive source of information in the assessment of epidemiology of asthma, in the study population. So, the main criteria of the risk of the bronchial asthma development in urban children were: male gender and presence of bronchial asthma and allergies in the anamnesis of one parent. For rural children such symptoms were less: the presence of parental allergy, as well as mold and dampness in the house. Neviartovich Pa stwowy Uniwersytet im. Janki Kupa y w Grodnie, Bia oru Sytuacja epidemiologiczna rozpowszechnienia astmy w ród dzieci i m odzie y grodzie skiej wskazuje tendencje wzrostow . ównym celem badania by a ocena cz sto ci wyst powania astmy i jej czynników ryzyka u dzieci miejskich i wiejskich. Aby porówna skutki astmy zbadane wyst powanie astmy i alergii równie u rodziców i wp yw takich czynników ryzyka jak wilgo w domu i zwierz ta domowe. Wyniki bada wykaza y nisk cz sto wyst powania objawów astmy, która wynosi a odpowiednio 36 (1,36%) i 33 (1,38%). Analiz obj to 69 dzieci z astm rozpoznan przez lekarza. G ówne determinanty wyró niaj ce dzieci z astm s takie jak: obecno astmy i chorób alergicznych u rodziców, dzieci p ci m skiej z miast oraz obecno ci wilgoci i ple ni w domu u dzieci wiejskich. Cz sto wyst powania astmy i alergii u rodziców by a wi ksza w miejskich rodzinach. Generalnie, ustalona niska cz sto wyst powania astmy i brak tradycyjnych zwi zków analizowanych wybranych czynników ryzyka, co pozwala stwierdzi , e astma rozpoznana przez lekarza nie jest decyduj cym ród em informacji do oceny epidemiologii choroby w badanej populacji. ówne kryteria ryzyka rozpowszechnienia astmy oskrzelowej w ród dzieci miejskich by y: p m ska i obecno astmy oskrzelowej i alergii u rodziców. Dla dzieci wiejskich charakterystyczne takie objawy, jak: obecno alergii u rodziców jak równie ple i wilgo w domu. Podzi kowanie: badanie wspierane przez grant Kasa im.
