NeoLit – Koło Naukowe Anglistów
Od roku 1996 do 2008 pełniłem funkcję opiekuna i animatora Koła Naukowego Anglistów „NeoLit”,
które wraz z grupą studentów (spośród których większość posiada dziś stopień doktorski), powołaliśmy do istnienia. „NeoLit” szybko stał się jednym z najaktywnieszych studenckich kół naukowych Uniwersytetu Śląskiego. Stacjonarne debaty Koła, do udziału w których zapraszani byli naukowcy Uniwersytetu Śląskiego i goście Instytutu, zainspirowały działalność zakrojoną szerzej:
w kolejnych latach „NeoLit” organizował już cykliczne konferencje. Kiedy w roku akademickim
1999/2000 zostałem stypendystą międzynarodowej organizacji Civic Education Project, pozyskałem fundusze umożliwiające z jednej strony stworzenie nowych kursów akademickich, a z drugiej – na powołanie do istnienia recenzowanego czasopisma studentów i doktorantów NeoLit OnLine oraz na organizację sympozjów. Wówczas też konferencje „NeoLitu” rozwinęły się na skalę
międzynarodową. Dwie z nich miały miejsce w Polsce, jedna w Wielkiej Brytanii, a w ramach kolejnej, organizowanej przez Civic Education Project na Węgrzech, przedstawiły referaty dwie członkinie Koła. „NeoLit” funkcjonuje po dziś dzień, i tak jak dawniej–najbardziej zaangażowani jego
członkowie jeszcze przed ukończeniem studiów mogą się poszczycić publikacjami w „dorosłych”
monografiach i udziałem w krajowych i międzynarodowych konferencjach.
Wykłady otwarte
Oprócz animacji „NeoLitu” i zajęć dydaktycznych, prowadziłem też działalność propagatorską organizując wykłady otwarte na Uniwersytecie Śląskim w ramach prowadzonej przez dwa lata akcji
„Uniwersytet Zimowy Gazety Wyborczej”, regularnie prowadziłem zajęcia dla licealistów w ramach
Dni Otwartych Instytutu i wygłaszałem wykłady dla Uniwersytetu Trzeciego wieku. Organizowałem też seminaria i wykłady gościnne w szkołach średnich regionu, pracowałem w komisjach
olimpiad i konkursów anglistycznych. Tak jak w latach ubiegłych, obok moich bieżących obowiązków dydaktycznych i naukowych, prowadzę działalność popularyzującą naukę w ramach wykładów otwartych Śląskiej Nocy Naukowców, czy poprzez organizację otwartych konferencji, takich jak „A Whale of a Night” – dzień Hermana Melville’a, jaka odbyła się we współpracy z Konsulatem
USA w Krakowie i Ambasadą USA w Warszawie w katowickiej Bibliotece Śląskiej w marcu 2008
roku.
Wykłady i kursy gościnne za granicą, organizacja wymian (Erasmus)
Prowadziłem również wykłady gościnne w tak prestiżowych uczelniach amerykańskich, jak Massachussets Institute of Technology, czy Grinnell College, gdzie – jako profesor wizytujący – byłem
odpowiedzialny za stworzenie i przeprowadzenie sześciotygodniowego kursu poświęconego filozofii Hermana Melville’a. Pozyskiwałem też studentów LLP Erasmus prowadząc dla nich seminaria gościnne w Bolton Institute of Higher Education, University of York St. John, University of Birmingham, Uniwersytecie Sztokholmskim, Uniwersytecie „La Sapienza” w Rzymie oraz – w Polsce
– dla studentów Davidson College (USA).

W latach 2000–2002 pełniłem funkcję Egzaminatora z języka angielskiego w Studium Doktoranckim
przy Wydziale Filologicznym Uniwersytetu Śląskiego.
Studencki Korpus Dyplomatyczny
Obecnie opiekuję się szczególną edukacyjną grą, w ramach której Studencki Korpus Dyplomatycznym, złożony ze studentów anglistyki UŚ, we współpracy z Konsulatem Stanów Zjednoczonych Ameryki w Krakowie włączy się w organizację wydarzenia pod tytułem „Election Night” w katowickim Centrum „American Corner”
Szkoła Języka Polskiego i Kultury Polskiej
Regularnie współpracuję też ze Szkołą Języka Polskiego i Kultury Polskiej Uniwersytetu Śląskiego
prowadząc wykłady dla studentów programu Erasmus oraz dla międzynarodowych słuchaczy
Letniej Szkoły Języka Polskiego i Kultury Polskiej w Cieszynie.

Opiekuję się stale studentami Międzyinstytutowego Studium Humanistycznego oraz osobami
studiującymi w ramach Indywidualnego Toku Studiów.

Do tej pory wypromowałem 41 magistrów.
Osiągnięcia w sferze organizacyjnej
Praca dla Instytutu
Niezwykle istotnym elementem mojej pracy na Uczelni jest praca organizacyjna. Przez kilka lat
pełniłem funkcję Sekretarza Rady Instytutu. Byłem także twórcą i administratorem pierwszego
instytutowego serwisu internetowego, który w nowoczesny – jak na owe czasy – i skuteczny
sposób uczynił informacje o działalności i osiągnięciach mojej jednostki dostępnymi globalnie.
Organizacja konferencji
Jako organizator lub współorganizator odpowiedzialny byłem za cztery międzynarodowe konferencje Instytutu Kultur i Literatur Anglojęzycznych. Nawiązałem i rozwinąłem współpracę
naukową z Akademią Muzyczną im. Karola Szymanowskiego w Katowicach, która przyniosła
w efekcie dwie konferencje i dwie monografie. Jednak wśród najistotniejszych osiągnieć w
tej dziedzinie należy wymienić organizację jednego z najważniejszych amerykanistycznych
wydarzeń ostatnich lat, powierzonej mi Szóstej Międzynarodowej Konferencji Towarzystwa
the Melville Society pod patronatem Prezydenta RP, zorganizowanej we współpracy z Miastem
Szczecin i Ambasadą USA w Warszawie, a ostatnio – powierzenie mi organizacji Światowego
Kongresu Międzynarodowego Towarzystwa International American Studies Association, który
odbędzie się w Szczecinie, 3-6 sierpnia 2013.
Działalność w sferze organizacji czasopism
Nawiązanie stałej współpracy z czasopismem Er(r)go, w redakcji którego od stycznia 2013 roku
pełnię funkcję zastępcy redaktora naczelnego, pozwoliło mi zdobyć doświadczenia, które prze[30]
łożyły się na moją działalność w International American Studies Association i pracę w Zarządzie
tego międzynarodowego Towarzystwa, a w końcu dały w efekcie współzałożycielstwo i współredagowanie recenzowanego czasopisma IASA – Review of International American Studies.
Działalność na rzecz społeczności Uniwersytetu i umiędzynarodowienia
Jednocześnie, oprócz wpisanej w moje obowiązki organizacji konferencji oraz, z wyboru, reprezentowania Pracowników Młodszych w Radzie Wydziału Filologicznego, moja praca na rzecz
społeczności Uniwersytetu Śląskiego przyniosła w efekcie kilka nowych międzynarodowych
umów z ważnymi ośrodkami naukowymi w świecie, takimi jak University of Birmingham w Wielkiej Brytanii, Uniwersytet „Sapienza” w Rzymie, Uniwersytet w Zagrzebiu, czy Davidson College
w USA (prace przygotowawcze trwają).
Nowe kierunki i przedmioty
Istotnym efektem mojej działalności w Civic Education Project było wprowadzenie w siatki zajęć
nowego przedmiotu „Przekład jako zjawisko kulturowe”. Najważniejszym jednak osiągnięciem
w sferze tworzenia programów nauczania było stworzenie od podstaw idei, a następnie implementacja i koordynacja innowacyjnych w skali kraju Studiów Projekowania Rozrywki Interaktywnej (SPRINT), które realizowane będą od roku 2012/2013 we współpracy z branżą deweloperską w Instytucie Kultur i Literatur Anglojęzycznych (SPRINT-WRITE), na Wydziale Informatyki
(SPRINT-CODE), na Wydziale Artystycznym (SPRINT-WRITE) oraz, od roku 2014, w Szkole Zarządzania Uniwersytetu Śląskiego i/lub w Uniwersytecie Ekonomicznym im. Karola Adamieckiego
w Katowicach (SPRINT-MANAGE)
Promocja dostępności badań
Jestem także autorem projektu „Obecni w świecie”, którego realizowana aktualnie implementacja usprawni globalne udostępnianie wyników badań uczonych z Uniwersytetu Śląskiego
i uczelni współpracujących.
Budowanie partnerskich relacji między miastami i regionami
Rozszerzając współpracę między Uniwersytetem Śląskim a Uniwersytetem Szczecińskim, doprowadziłem też do nawiązania partnerskiej współpracy pomiędzy Miastem Katowice, Województwem Śląskim i Miastem Szczecin, której elementem będzie organizacja wspomnianego
Światowego Kongresu IASA, Szczecin 2012.
Reprezentowanie Uniwersytetu Śląskiego w otoczeniu akademickim i biznesowym
Niezależnie od tych działań, z powołania JM Rektora Uniwersytetu Śląskiego reprezentowałem
Uniwersytet Śląski jako członek oficjalnej delegacji odbywającej wizytę roboczą w West Chester University of Pennsylvania, West Chester, PA, USA. Reprezentowałem także mój Uniwersytet
i Miasto Katowice w rozmowach z międzynarodowymi korporacjami, takimi jak IBM czy Hewlett
Packard. Pozostaję stale do dyspozycji władz miejskich i regionalnych w kontaktach z Ambasadą Stanów Zjednoczonych i partnerami amerykańskimi.
Działalność recenzencka
Wieloletnia praca w międzynarodowych towarzystwach naukowych, takich jak wspomniane
już the Melville Society i International American Studies Association, czy działalność w ramach
członkowstwa American Studies Association, Modern Language Association czy Polskiego
Towarzystwa Studiów Amerykanistycznych wiąże się z regularnym recenzowaniem artyku[31]
łów (peer reviews). Jednak recenzją szczególną, którą miałem zaszczyt przedstawić w ostatnim
czasie, była recenzja dorobku profesora Johna Mattesona, zdobywcy nagrody Pulitzera z 2008
roku, nominowanego do tytułu „Distinguished Professor”, o jaką zwrócił się do mnie Komitet
do Spraw Nominacji nowojorskiego CUNY.
Podsumowanie
W sferze organizacyjnej, jestem odpowiedzialny za prawidłowy rozwój programów SPRINT
i rozwój konktaktów z branżami powiązanymi z tymi programami, organizuję Światowy Kongres International American Studies Association, który odbędzie się we współpracy z Uniwersytetem Szczecińskim w roku 2013. Współorganizuję także program „Erasmus Under Sail” w kooperacji z biurem armatorskim s/v „Fryderyk Chopin”.
W sferze dydaktycznej – oprócz zwykłych zajęć kursowych – opiekuję się trójką studentów
MISH, jestem współodpowiedzialny za działanie powstającego właśnie Studenckiego Korpusu
Dyplomatycznego i współuczestniczę w działaniach otwartych, propagujących naukę, prowadząc wykłady w ramach Dni Otwartych Instytutu Kultur i Literatur Anglojęzycznych UŚ.
Działalność naukowa, dydaktyczna i organizacyjna ostatnich osiemnastu lat przyniosła mi
w sumie ponad sto publikacji, siedem stypendiów i grantów, udział w ponad pięćdziesięciu

i portalach poświęconych muzyce morza, prowadzący warsztaty poświęcone pisaniu tekstów
piosenek oraz zachowania estradowego, laureat (wraz z zespołem) wszystkich najważniejszych
nagród w dziedzinie muzyki żeglarskiej w Polsce, a także podwójnego drugiego miejsca w konkursie CARA Awards 2005 w kategoriach Najlepszą Płytę Folkową A Cappella oraz Najlepszego

The “NeoLit” Research Society
Between October 1996 and September 2008, I had been the academic advisor and animator
of the “NeoLit” Research Society. Since October 1st, 1996, when, together with a group of enthusiastic students (most of whom now hold doctoral degrees), I co-founded the “NeoLit,” the Society has become one of the most active of all student research organizations within the University of Silesia in Katowice. The initial debates of the Society, featuring guest lectures and seminars
by scholars of our Alma Mater and international guest speakers, inspired the “NeoLit” members
to expand the scope of their activity. Beginning with the year 1997, the “NeoLit” would regularly
organize its own conferences. After I became a Civic Education Project Local Faculty Fellow in 1999,
I gained access to mechanisms securing funding allowing me, on the one hand, to develop new
academic courses and, on the other, to call into existence a new peer-reviewed, grad-student-run
journal NeoLit On-Line and to support the organization of “NeoLit” conferences. Since then,
the “NeoLit” events have gained an international dimension: to-date, two international conferences
were organized in Poland, one in Great Britain and one, organized by the Civic Education Project
in Hungary, was attended by two “NeoLit” members, who presented their papers in the international forum of CEP students and faculty. Today, supervised by one of former “NeoLit” activists,
who now is a faculty member of the Institute of English Cultures and Literatures, the Society remains a model student research organization. Its members regularly present their work not only
in student conferences, but also in international academic events gathering experienced scholars.
N0t infrequently, they get their work published even before they graduate.
Open lectures, competition boards, animation of student mobility, Erasmus
Apart from the animation of the “NeoLit” and teaching regular courses, I have also been committed
to propagation and popularization of scholarship. I have been involved in a variety of outreach activities, including, among others, an open lecture series for the “Gazeta Wyborcza Winter University Project,” regular open lectures for high school students at my home University, visiting seminars at high schools of the Silesian region, regular events within the frame of the annual Open
Days of the Institute of English Cultures and Literatures, as well as lectures for the students of the Third
Age University or open lectures held for general public under the auspices of the annual Silesian
Night of Scientists and Scholars, organized by the universities associated in the Silesian University
Network. Apart from cyclical events, in which I participate on regular basis, I also organize special
events, such as “A Whale of a Night”—an open conference dedicated to Herman Melville, in collaboration with the US Embassy in Warsaw and the US Consulate General in Cracow, and held
at the Library of Silesia in Katowice in March 2008.
I regularly work on examination boards for the so-called “Olympics of English,” an annual
all-Polish event for high school students, the top twenty finalists of which are granted a choice
of a place in any English department in Poland.
An important element of my work oriented toward the popularization of Polish scholarship
and my own University is the animation of interest among the students of partnering Universities
under the auspices of the LLP Erasmus. I have offered guest seminars to students and faculty
at Bolton Institute of Higher Education (now: University of Bolton), University of York St. John, University of Birmingham, and Stockholm University. Such actions often result in signing new LLP

Erasmus contracts, as was the case with my collaboration with University “Sapienza” in Rome,
or the University of Zagreb.
Guest lectures and courses
I have also been promoting Polish academia as Visiting Scholar, holding guest lectures for such
prestigious institutions as Massachussets Institute of Technology or Grinnell College, where, as Internatinal Visiting Fellow, I was responsible for creating and delivering a six-week short course dedicated to Herman Melville’s existentialism. (For a full list, please see: Attachment 3.3.: “List of Conferences and Guest Lectures”).
Ph.D. Program Examination Boards
In the years 2000–2002 I served on the Examination Board of the Ph.D. Program of the Faculty
of Philology at the University of Silesia in Katowice, in the capacity of the Examiner in English.
Student Diplomatic Corps
At present, I am involved in the animation and supervision of a unique educational game, in which
students of the Institute of English Cultures and Literatures organize themselves into a Student Diplomatic Corps and collaborate with the US Consulate General in Cracow for the purpose of the organization of the events of the “Election Night,” to be held at the “American Corner” at the Library
of the University of Silesia in Katowice.
School of the Polish Language and Culture
I regularly collaborate with the School of the Polish Language and Culture at the University of Silesia
in Katowice, offering lectures for students learning Polish within the frames of such programs as LLP
Erasmus or the University of Silesia Summer School of the Polish Language and Culture, held annually in Cieszyn, Poland.
Inter-Institute Program in Humanities/Individual Organization of the Program of Studies
I regularly serve as a designated supervisor of individual students working within the structures
of the Inter-Institute Program in Humanities, or those whose GPA renders them eligible for the socalled Individual Programs of Studies.
M.A. Graduates
To date, I supervised 41 students who successfully defended their M.A. dissertations and received
their graduate degrees.
ORGANIZATIONAL ACHIEVEMENTS
Service to my Home Institute
One of the most important aspects of my organizational work at the University is service
to the Institute of English Cultures and Literatures. Apart from my regular work oriented toward
the promotion of my Instutute at home and abroad, for several years I served as the Secretary
of the Institute Council, participating in all Council Meetings. I was also the author and administrator of the first online service of the Institute, which, in the early years of the Internet, rather
efficiently served the purpose of disseminating information of my Institute’s profile, of research
interests and achievements of my Colleagues, of events and conferences the Institute organized, and of its teaching offer to global online community. The service also offered a “proto-elearning” capacity, popularly used by students and teachers alike, which, at the time, was a rare
functionality.

Conference organization
As organizer, co-organizer, or co-chair, I was responsible for a number of international conferences of the Institute of English Cultures and Literatures (for details, see: Attachment 3.3. “List
of Conferences and Guest Lectures”), including events emerging as a result of my work toward
establishing and developing collaboration with the Karol Szymanowski Academy of Music in Katowice (which, thus far, has yielded two conferences and two collective monographs). However,
the most significant of my achievements in this field I consider the organization of two worldwide-scale Americanist events: the organization of the 6th International Melville Society Conference in Szczecin, Poland, 2007, and the organization of the International American Studies
Association World Congress, to be held in Szczecin, 3-6 August 2013.
Organization of Learned Journals
My long-term collaboration with Er(r)go, the learned journal of theory, literature and culture,
of which journal I have become an Associate Editor in January 2013, gave me the necessary
experience to effectively support activity of the International American Studies Association,
translating into my work as an At Large Member of its Board—first, as the officer responsible for the Association’s online presence, and, soon thereafter, as the founder and co-editor
of the IASA organ: the peer-reviewed journal Review of International American Studies. The RIAS,
founded in 2006, has recently entered its sixth year of activity. Since its inception, from year
to year, RIAS has been gaining a stronger and stronger position within the space of American
Studies world-wide.
New courses and curriculum development
An important effect of my work as a Civic Education Project Local Faculty Fellow was the introduction of two new courses into the M.A. curricula at my home institution: “Translation as a Cultural Phenomenon” and “Literary and Cultural Theory in Interpretive Practice: A Supplementary
M.A. Seminar.” My most important achievement in this respect, however, has thus far been
the conceptualization, organization and implementation of a brand new multiprogram, realized in four faculties of the University of Silesia: the SPRINT (Studies of the Production of Interactive Entertainment). The innovative multiprogram is to be launched as of October 1st, 2012,
in collaboration with Game-Dev industry. It will be realized at the Institute of English Cultures
and Literatures (SPRINT-WRITE), the Institute of Information Technology and Computer Science (SPRINT-CODE), the Faculty of Fine Arts (SPRINT-ART) and, beginning with October 2014,
also at the University of Silesia School of Management and/or at the Karol Adamiecki University
of Economics in Katowice (SPRINT-MANAGE).
Promotion of research
I am also the author of the project code-named “Globally Present,” whose current implementation is expected to facilitate global access to the results of research carried out by the faculty
at the University of Silesia and collaborating institutions, and hence, also to bring a marked
increase in the recognition of their work world-wide.
Building partnerships between Cities and Regions
Expanding the collaboration between the University of Silesia and the University of Szczecin,
I also helped negotiate the establishment of the partnership between the City of Katowice,

the Voivodship of Silesia and the City of Szczecin, of which an element is the organization
of the IASA World Congress.
Representing University of Silesia
Independently of the activities listed above, by the nomination of the Rector of the University
of Silesia I represented my Alma Mater as a member of the official delegation to West Chester University of Pennsylvania, West Chester, PA, USA. By the same nomination, I represented
the University of Silesia in Katowice, the Silesian University Network and the City of Katowice
in negotiations with international corporations: IBM and Hewlett Packard. On permanent basis,
I am at the disposal of the local government of the Voivodship of Silesia and the City of Katowice
facilitating their contacts with the Embassy of the United States of America and other US Partners.
Serving as a referee/reviewer
Many years of active work in international learned societies, such as the Melville Society or International American Studies Association, as well as my long-term membership in such societies
as American Studies Association, Modern Language Association or Polish Association for American Studies, translate into duties related to peer reviewing of articles submitted for publication
in a variety of venues. Likewise, I am regularly asked to review academic outputs of my Western
Colleagues coming up for tenure, promotion, or nominated for distingished positions. The most
important of such reviews thus far was the review of the academic output of professor John
Matteson, the 2008 Pulitzer Prize Winner, in endorsement of his nomination for CUNY Distinguished Professorship, which was solicited from me in 2012 by the Nominating Committee
of the City University of New York.
SUMMARY
Organization-wise, I am currently responsible for the proper functioning of the SPRINT programs as well as for the development of contacts with industries related to these programs.
At the same time, I organize and co-chair the IASA World Congress, Szczecin 2013. I am also
responsible for the organization of the project titled “Erasmus Under Sail” in collaboration
with the s/v “Fryderyk Chopin” Owners Office.
In the area of teaching, apart from my regular teaching duties, I supervise three students
of the Inter-Faculty Program in Humanities (MISH) and I am responsible for the development
of the Student Diplomatic Corps.
I also actively participate in outreach activities of my Institute and my University, propagating and popularizing scholarship within frames of a variety of events, including the Open Days
of the Institute of English Cultures and Literatures, as well as in cyclical promotional events
organized by the University of Silesia.
My academic, didactic and organizational activity of the past eighteen years has yielded
the total of over 100 publications, seven stipends and grants, participation in over 50 conferences in Poland and world-wide, four Awards of the Rector of the University of Silesia, the supervision of 38 sucessfully defended M.A. dissertations and a nomintion to the most prestigious of all awards, Annual Student’s Laurel Award in the “Students’ Friend” category in 2009.
As of October 2013, by the nomination of His Magnificence the Rector of the University of Silesia, I have taken on the responsibilities of the Rector’s Plenipotentiary
for Recruitment, as well as member of two University Committees: The Committee
for the Impovement of Administration and The Committee for Fundraising.

since 1988—member of the a cappella sextet Banana Boat, co-organizer of artistic events,
member of the jury panels in musical competitions, reviewer of musical albums, writer for periodicals and portals dedicated to maritime culture, organizer of workshops dedicated to songwriting and stage performance, winner (as member of Banana Boat) of all the most important
maritime music awards in Poland and a dual first runner-up in the CARA Awards 2005 competition in the category of the Best World Music Album and Best World Music Song A Cappella
(awarded by the Contemporary A Cappella Society of America). Also, for a number of weeks
the song “Little Look” performed by Eleanor McEvoy and Banana Boat would win popular votes
in the prestigious Polish Radio 3 Hitlist. The collaboration between Eleanor McEvoy and Banana
Boat resulted in the Polish Music Lovers Award for the Banana Boat in the categories of The
Folksong of the Year (“Ukraina,” Banana Boat & Eleanor McEvoy) and Musical Collaboration with
International Artist of the Year (“Little Look,” Banana Boat & Eleanor McEvoy). The Banana Boat
gave nearly 500 concerts in Poland, Ireland, Germany, France, the Netherlands, Czech Republic,
Italy, United States and Canada.

2011—initiator and organizer of MARIFESTI: the International Conference of the Organizers
of Festivals of the Culture of Oceans, Seas, Rivers and Lakes, a body connecting the Organizers of the most important maritime events in Europe and Canada.
