TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
Forty days after
Christmas, today’s ancient
feast is an extension of the
shining days of Christ’s coming into the depths of winter.
This is the day when, for a thousand years, the Church
has blessed a year’s supply of candles. In many places, a
procession forms outside the Church. The core memory is
of Simeon and Anna’s meeting with the infant Jesus and
his parents outside the temple on the fortieth day after the
child’s birth, and the delight of going to the table of the
Lord for the Eucharist, a foretaste of our final meeting
with Christ.
For some Christians, today is known as “The
Meeting,” suggesting not only the encounter in the
Temple, but also our assembly at the Lord’s table and our
longing for the kingdom. One story suggests that the
commotion made by so many candle-bearing, hymnsinging faithful in the wintry fields of Germany on their
joyful way to Mass stirred the badger from hibernation to
examine this promise of springtime. The interrupted nap
of the groundhog is amazingly linked to the light of
Christ driving away the shadows of the world’s darkness.
This beautiful feast only rarely falls on a Sunday. What
better reason could there be for candles at dinner tonight?

Dear Young People and Adults who care about them,
After much discussion, it is apparent that we need to
offer the opportunity for young people in our parish
community to have some experience of Teen Ministry.
Some believe the need is already being met at the high
school and through other family sources.
This is an attempt to address the issue at this particular juncture. It has been a while since the leadership of St.
Ferdinand reached out to high school age youth with the
gifts of its blessings.
Our Teen Ministry will be modest at the beginning,
but there is a hope that St.Ferdinand could provide a
consistent effort capable of fostering relationship for the
teens to our parish, and as a gateway to deeper understating and participation in our faith.
We know from experience, a recipe for success of
these kinds of programs is a broad base of adult leadership to best communicate with and serve the youth. We
will have our first “Welcome” and Open Gym on
February 9th at 3:00 p.m. for high school teens.
The day’s events will conclude shortly before 5:00
p.m. when the gym is being used for other activities. We
are in an evolving process and there will be the necessary
growing pains and changes, but through the grace of our
Lord Jesus Christ, we will have life and some fun along
the way.
If you are interested, as a “leader” or a teen, just
show up, or give me a call at 622/3022 ext 366. Your
concerns and suggestions are always welcome.
In His praise,
Joseph Kummer
Director of Religious Education

As members of the parish faith
community, it is our responsibility to
remember both in concrete and spiritual
ways those who cannot celebrate with us
each week because they are ill. Those who
are sick in turn, remember all of us daily
in their prayers and in their sufferings. We experience many
blessings because of their remembering us. And so ... please
remember in your prayers:

Our Financial Support of St. Ferdinand Parish
Last weekend the people of St. Ferdinand Church donated $12,860.71 in the regular offertory collection. We
thank you for your ongoing support and stewardship of God’s blessings. The cold winter weather is affecting our Mass
attendance, and subsequently our offertory collection. We ask that all of our parish families be mindful of their stewardship and “make up” your weekly or monthly offertory envelopes at a subsequent Mass. This is very important to our
budget, particularly in the winter and summer when Mass attendance fluctuates significantly.
Currently we are finishing the six month financial report for the Archdiocese and we have also begun the budget
process for next year. Presently, collections are down in most parishes in the Archdiocese. It appears our collections for
the first seven months here at St. Ferdinand’s are down about 4%. This will influence our budgeting process as well as
limit what we are able to accomplish to spread the Gospel for the remainder of this year.
Your interest in the financial well-being our parish is appreciated.

Serdecznie zapraszamy na pielgrzykê z okazji
25-LECIA PONTYFIKATU
umi³owanego OJCA ŒW. JANA PAW£A II
oraz rocznicy og³oszenia œwiêtym Ojca Pio
22 kwietnia - 1 maja 2003
Marka Jurzyka –
duchowego opiekuna pielgrzymki : tel: (773) 622-5900 wewn. 5
Minionej jesieni Ojciec œw. Jan Pawe³ II rozpocz¹³ 25 rok pos³ugiwania na Stolicy
Piotrowej.
by g³osiæ Dobr¹ Nowinê wszelkiemu stworzeniu. Papieskie podró¿e i ca³a apostolska
aktywnoœæ Papie¿a ods³oni³y obraz Ojca Œw. jako cz³owieka wielkiego serca i niezrównanej
dobroci. Niezwykle donoœnie s³ychaæ by³o jego g³os wzywaj¹cy do budowania trwa³ego
wykorzystywanymi, chorymi i biednymi.
Koœcio³a, ani wreszcie trudnoœci zwi¹zane z ograniczeniami wieku.
w s³owach i w modlitwie.
- mi³oœæ do Ojczyzny.
Có¿ dopiero my, Polacy, czy
TACA NIEDZIELNA
W zesz³ym tygodniu parafianie Koœcio³a œw. Ferdynanda z³o¿yli donacjê w wysokoœci $12,860.71. Dziêkujemy wam za
nieustanne wspieranie naszej parafii.
obni¿a.
nasz bud¿et i mo¿e ograniczyæ dzie³a ewangelizacyjne do koñca tego roku.
Szczerze doceniamy wasz wk³ad na rzecz parafii.

•More that just the Battle of Belmont. Every Shamrock alum
knows that the “Battle of Belmont” is one of the most intense
basketball games of the year. Featuring area and conference
rivals St. Patrick and Holy Cross, the game has become a
highlighted date on both team’s schedules. This year’s game is
set for February 7 at St. Patrick, and promises to be a good
one, with the teams sitting in first and second in the conference.
To add to the atmosphere, the alumni office at St. Patrick is
sponsoring an Alumni Homecoming for the game. Tickets to
the homecoming festivities cost $20 and include entrance to
the game and a post game party. Proceeds raised for the event
will benefit the Max Kurland Scholarship Fund. For information or to RSVP, contact Tom Meilinger at (773) 205-3770.

Presentation of the Lord

PRESENTATION OF THE LORD
by Paul Turner
The Presentation of the Lord pulls many favorite
mementos from the Catholic cupboard: candles,
blessings, Christmas, and church. The Mass of
February 2 begins with a blessing of lighted candles held by the faithful, who glow with the memory of the birth of Jesus.
The origins of the feast lie in ancient Jewish custom. On
the 40th day after childbirth, parents brought the infant to
the Temple to present it to the Lord and to purify the
mother. St. Luke tells us that Joseph and Mary sacrificed
two birds for the occasion after the birth of Jesus. Count
up 40 days after Christmas and you'll come to February 2.
Until the 1960s, we used to call this day "The Purification
of Mary." The title changed for several reasons. We no
longer believe that women who give birth need purification, and the true significance of the feast concerns Jesus
coming to the Temple. He is the Promised One, whose
light will shine, beaming rays of hope to all the world.
Also on the old calendar, this feast closed the Christmas
season. Now we end the Christmas season with the
Baptism of the Lord. So, even though the date for the
Presentation still depends on Christmas, it has become a
feast of Ordinary Time. Since it is a feast of the
Lord, it takes precedence even when it falls on
Sunday.
The candles you hold for the blessing may come
from your parish, or you may bring your own
from home. If you like to use blessed candles for
household prayer throughout the year, here is your chance
to get them. On the day following this feast, our calendar
permits the option of commemorating St. Blase, a bishop
and martyr of the early church. Legend has it that he once
freed a child from choking, and while imprisoned under
persecution he received light from friends who visited his
cell with candles. Our church still uses candles from the
Presentation of the Lord in the blessing of the faithful's
throats on St. Blase's Day. Blessed candles in our churches
and homes signify the living presence of Christ in our
community. With Christ as our light we warm a lost and
wintry world.
