Our next CCD class will be held on March 22, 2014. Please
arrive on time.
Dear Parishioners,
We have received some distressing news from Fr.
Waldemar regarding the financial condition of the
parish. If we continue on with the same level of income and expenses, we will be approximately
$77,000 short at the end of June, and $90,000 short
at the end of the next fiscal year, June 2015.
As a result of these shortages, as of June 30th Fr.
Zbigniew will no longer be one of our parish priests,
although he may continue to live here. If we need him to help with
masses, we will have to pay him for each mass he says for us.
As of the same date our organist, Witold Socha will no longer be a
full-time employee of the parish. He will lose his health insurance,
and will be paid for each mass he plays. We will no longer be able to
count on him to play for our festivals and other parish events. He
may choose to leave St. Mary of Czestochowa for a better job.
There are two ways to avoid these terrible budget deficits. If every
family would be able to increase their weekly contribution by $2.00,
and if every family would make the effort to buy or sell their book of
raffle tickets, we would be in a more secure financial condition.

First Sunday of Lent
Matthew 4:1-11
Jesus fasts for 40 days in the desert and is tempted by the devil.
Background on the Gospel Reading
In each of the three Synoptic Gospels (Mark, Matthew, and Luke),
after Jesus' baptism by John, Jesus is reported to have gone to the
desert to fast and pray for 40 days. In each case, while in the desert, Jesus is tempted by the devil.
Matthew and Luke give more detail than Mark does, but each one
tells how the devil tempts Jesus in the desert. In Matthew, as in
Luke, the devil presents three temptations to Jesus. The devil
tempts Jesus to use his power to appease his hunger; he tempts
Jesus to put God's promise of protection to the test; and he offers
Jesus all of the kingdoms of the world if Jesus will worship the devil.
In each case, Jesus resists the temptation, rebuking the devil with
words from Scripture.
The account of Jesus' temptation in the desert is filled with allusions
and parallels to the Old Testament, including the story of the people
of Israel. The Israelites spent 40 years wandering in the desert in
Exodus, for example, and Jesus spends 40 days in the desert. As
the Israelites were tempted during the Exodus, so too is Jesus
tempted.
Each temptation offers insight into both God and the human condition. Jesus' rejection of the temptations shows that he will not put
God to the test. Grounding himself on the word and authority of
Scripture, Jesus rebukes the devil, confident in God's protection
and faithfulness.
As we start our journey through Lent, our Sunday readings call us to
adopt the same confidence that Jesus had in the face of temptation:
God's word alone will suffice; God's promise of protection can be
trusted; God alone is God.
A Reflection on Lenten Fasting

In the early Church and, to a lesser extent still today, there were two
fasts. There was the "total fast" that preceded all major feasts or
sacramental events. The ancient name for this fast was "statio" from
the verb "sto, stare" to stand watch, on guard or in vigil. The second
fast was a fast of abstinence from certain foods, e.g., meats or fats.
This was more an act of self-discipline and self-control. The statio
fast was total and a means of watching and waiting…i.e. for something. The fast of abstinence was more general and personal, to
help oneself be more disciplined or self-controlled. The total fast is
still kept today prior to reception of Holy Communion. Following
Holy Communion, the total fast ceases because Jesus had explicitly
stated that we don't fast when the bridegroom is here, in other
words, what we're keeping vigil for has arrived, the wait is over. On
the other hand, the fast of abstinence was allowed on Sundays because the continuity of abstinence can be important for it to be effective.
These initial observations, then, teach us that the Eucharist is always the end of a preparation. It is always the fulfillment of an expectation. In the Orthodox Church during Lent, they have Eucharist

only on Saturday and Sunday. But because Wednesdays and Fridays are total fast days, those two days are also days for the Communion service (Liturgy of the PreSanctified) which are held in the
evening, i.e., after the day of preparation. Fasting is always preparatory.
But how did fasting become such an important means of preparing
for the Eucharist and of learning virtue through self-discipline?
Christian fasting is revealed in an interdependence between two
events in the Bible:the "breaking of the fast" by Adam and Eve; and
the "keeping of the fast" by Christ at the beginning of his ministry.
Humanity's "Fall" away from God and into sin began with eating.
God had proclaimed a fast from the fruit of only one tree, the tree of
knowledge of good and evil (Gen. 2:17), and Adam and Eve broke it.
Fasting is here connected with the very mystery of life and death, of
salvation and damnation. Food perpetuates life in this physical
world, which is subject to decay and death. But God "created no
death." (Wis. 1:13) Humanity, in Adam and Eve, rejected a life dependent on God alone for one that was dependent rather on "bread
alone." (Dt. 8:3; Mt. 4:4; Lk. 4:4) The whole world was given to man
as a kind of food, as a means to life, but "life" is meant as communion with God, not as food. ("Their god is their belly." Phil. 3:19) The
tragedy is not so much that Adam ate food, but that he ate the food
for its own sake, "apart" from God and to be independent of Him.
Believing that food had life in itself and thus he could be "like God."
And he put his faith in food. This kind of existence seems to be built
on the principle that man does indeed live "by bread alone."
Christ, however, is the new Adam. At the beginning of his ministry in
the Gospel of Matthew, we read, "When He had fasted 40 days and
40 nights, He became hungry." Hunger is that state in which we
realize our dependence on something else—when we face the ultimate question: "on what does my life depend?" Satan tempted both
Adam and Christ, saying: Eat, for your hunger is proof that you depend entirely on food, that your life is in food. Adam believed and
ate. Christ said, "Man does NOT live by bread alone." (Mt. 4:4; Lk.
4:4) This liberates us from total dependence on food, on matter, on
the world. Thus, for the Christian, fasting is the only means by
which man recovers his true spiritual nature. In order for fasting to
be effective, then, the spirit must be a part of it. Christian fasting is
not concerned with losing weight. It is a matter of prayer and the
spirit. And because of that, because it is truly a place of the spirit,
true fasting may well lead to temptation, and weakness and doubt
and irritation. In other words, it will be a real fight between good and
evil, and very likely we shall fail many times in these battles. But the
very discovery of the Christian life as "fight" and "effort" is an essential aspect of fasting.
Christian tradition can name at least seven reasons for fasting:
1.From the beginning, God commanded some fasting, and sin entered into the world because Adam and Eve broke the fast.
2.For the Christian, fasting is ultimately about fasting from sin.
3.Fasting reveals our dependence on God and not the resources of
this world.
4.Fasting is an ancient way of preparing for the Eucharist—the truest
of foods.
5.Fasting is preparation for baptism (and all the sacraments)—for
the reception of grace.
6.Fasting is a means of saving resources to give to the poor.
7.Fasting is a means of self-discipline, chastity, and the restraining
of the appetites.

Primer Domingo de Cuaresma — ciclo A
. Mt 4, 1-11: "Jesús ayuna durante cuarenta días y es tentado."
Empezamos la cuaresma y recordamos nuestra débil realidad
humana. Intentamos estar cerca de Dios pero vivimos una fe llena
de tentaciones. Queremos seguir las huellas de Jesús pero caemos con una cierta facilidad en nuestros propios errores. ¿Qué
hacer? ¿Tiene solución nuestro peregrinar mundano hacia Dios?
El Evangelio de hoy nos narra la solución que Jesús da a las tentaciones que aparecieron en su vida. No hay que confundir el pecado con la tentación. Son dos cosas distintas. Jesús no tuvo pecados pero sí tentaciones. Tuvo, como cualquier otro ser humano,
esa invitación al mal, a alejarse de Dios.
Al Señor se le promete en sus tentaciones ambiciones humanas.
La persona que espiritualmente es rica puede caer en las tentaciones que nos ofrece la miseria de nuestro yo. No es que nos despreciemos humanamente y no nos valoremos. Tenemos que valorar nuestros progresos y el amor que Dios nos tiene, desde ahí es
donde podemos hacer una fuerte defensa ante las tentaciones que
la vida nos pueda ofrecer.
Las tentaciones de Jesús son las mismas tentaciones a las que
había sucumbido el pueblo de Israel en el desierto. Jesús no se
deja engañar y no cae en lo que había caído el pueblo elegido. Su
actitud es segura y vigilante , es rápido en la respuesta, sabe lo
que quiere.
¿Cuáles son algunas de las tentaciones para los cristianos de
hoy?
- El eclipse de Dios:
Tenemos que estar vigilantes en este mundo donde la técnica y la
ciencia van al origen de la creación. La obra de Dios es buena, los
intentos del ser humano para crear no sabemos hasta dónde nos
puede llevar. No es que los católicos estemos contra la ciencia o el
progreso. Lo que sí tenemos claro es que todo ello tiene que estar
al servicio del ser humano y no contra él. La tentación es que podemos creer que Dios ha perdido presencia en nuestro mundo,
que se ha desentendido de él.
- Una espiritualidad sin Dios:
Hoy se habla mucho de espiritualidad pero de manera desencarnada. Es una espiritualidad abstracta, polimorfa, a la medida que
queramos ... La gente no quiere ni oír hablar de las exigencias de
Dios en nuestra vida; prefieren la espiritualidad anónima que pronunciar el nombre de Jesús como su salvador.
- La ausencia del prójimo:
Vivimos rodeados de personas pero no las identificamos como
tales. Muchas veces vamos a nuestros asuntos sin percibir la presencia del otro, en especial de los más débiles y necesitados de
nuestra sociedad. Cuando Dios se oculta en la existencia del ser
humano los otros se convierten simplemente en sombras que rozan nuestra vida. La gente termina hartándose de los demás y van
desde el odio hasta el indiferentismo absoluto. Esta tentación nos
lleva a olvidar el latido del corazón del otro, nos lleva a descuidar
la misericordia.
. Ante nuestras tentaciones ¿Seremos capaces de actuar con la
misma firmeza?

Hemos recibido noticias muy
preocupantes de parte de P.
Waldemar respecto a la situación financiera en que se
encuentra la parroquia. Si continuamos con el mismo nivel de
ingresos y gastos, la parroquia se encontrara aproximadamente en un deficiente de $77,000 al final de Junio, y de
$90,000 al final del ciclo fiscal, Junio 2015.
Como resultado de este deficiente, a partir de Junio 30 P.
Zbigniew ya no será uno de nuestros sacerdotes parroquiales, aunque el seguirá viviendo aquí. En caso de que necesitemos de su ayuda para celebrar alguna Misa, le tendremos
que pagar por cada Misa que el celebre.
También en la misma fecha nuestro organista, Witold Socha
ya no será un empleado de tiempo completo, perdiendo así
sus beneficios médicos, y se le pagara por cada Misa en que
el toque. Existe la posibilidad de que Witold nos decida dejar,
en búsqueda de un mejor trabajo.
Hay dos maneras en que podemos prevenir los deficientes en
el presupuesto. La primera es que todas las familias de la
parroquia aumente su contribución semanal por $2.00, y la
segunda es ayudándonos vendiendo por completo el libro de
boletos de la rifa anual, de esta manera nos podríamos encontrar en una situación financiera mas estable.

Otrzymaliśmy niepokojące wieści od Ojca Waldemar
dotyczące kondycji finansowej parafii. Jeśli nadal na tym
samym poziomie będą przychody i wydatki, to będziemy
mieli deficyt około 77.000 dolarów na koniec czerwca 2014
r. i 90.000 dolarów deficyt pod koniec następnego roku
budżetowego, czerwiec 2015 roku.
W wyniku tak dużego deficytu parafia będzie musiała
dokonać cieć w budżecie a więc z 1 lipcem O. Zbigniew nie
będzie na liście płac naszej parafii, będzie nadal mieszkał na
plebani gdyż jest członkiem Wspólnoty Redemptorystów.
Jeśli będziemy potrzebowali O. Zbyszka pomocy, będziemy
musieli zapłacić mu za każdą Mszę św.
Także od 1 lipca nasz organista, Pan Witold Socha nie
będzie już pełnoetatowym pracownikiem parafii. Pan Witold
straci ubezpieczenie zdrowotne i będzie otrzymywał
wynagrodzenie za każdą Mszę św. Nie będziemy już mogli
liczyć na niego, aby grał na naszych festiwalach i innych
wydarzeniach parafialnych. Pan Witold może podjąć decyzję
opuszczenia Parafii Matki Bożej Częstochowskiej dla
lepszej pracy.
Istnieją dwa sposoby, aby uniknąć tych strasznych deficytów
budżetowych. Pierwszy to, jeśli każda rodzina będzie w
