THE BAPTISM OF THE LORD

THE WATERS OF BAPTISM
When new sod is put in, it needs constant saturation
with water. Landscapers say that this “knits” the sod
to the soil. The same when a branch is grafted onto a
tree: the poultice that joins them at the splice must be
kept wet at all times. Water is the stuff that binds the
very cells of our bodies together. No wonder religions
throughout all times and cultures have used it so prominently.
When Jesus stepped into the Jordan for baptism, he “knit” himself to what had come before him. By going to the Jordan, he
made himself into the prophetic tradition that heralded the
coming reign of God. He had become fully human in the waters of Mary’s womb and by partaking in the rite of the baptism
of repentance, Jesus identified himself with our sinful, frail
humanity. It is through the waters of baptism that Christ continues to graft new members onto his Body, the Church;
through these waters we are cleansed from sin and filled with
the promise of grace, given our destiny for eternal life. For us,
as for Jesus, it is also the waters of baptism that inaugurate our
mission to proclaim the Good News.

for the Catholic University of America.
NATIONAL MIGRATION DAY-will be observed at our
Basilica on Sunday, January 11th at the 9:30am Family Mass at
the request of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. “We are one family under God” is this year’s theme.
At our Basilica this event is observed with great pageantry
and involvement of our St. Joseph School children. To signify
diversity, our students will join in procession at Mass dressed
in the garments/colors and carrying flags of their native countries.
A reception will follow mass in the school cafeteria where
you can sample tasty food from other cultures.
SUNDAY AFTERNOON CHRISTMAS CONCERT
On Sunday, Jan. 11th at 3:00pm at our Basilica, we will have
the opportunity to relive the Christmas spirit and enjoy the
melodies and lyrics we remember from the past. Choirs from
St. John Parish, Salem, MA; Our Lady of Czestochowa Parish,
Worcester, MA and Our Lady of Czestochowa Parish, South
Boston will join our Basilica choirs.
The concert is free, however donations will be appreciated
for a reception for our guests at the PAV following this special
program.

JANUARY MONTH OF FORGIVENESS
As we look forward to a new year, full of hopes and promises
-but also fears and challenges-we ask what God has prepared
for us. The family is our first school of forgiveness. The family prepares us to understand the meaning of God’s forgiveness.
“God proves his love for us in that, while we were still sinners,
Christ died for us”. To be Christian is to encounter Christ and
to receive his forgiveness. As Catholics we first receive this
forgiveness on the day of our baptism and we renew it through
the sacrament of reconciliation.
Forgiveness starts with those who are close to us: our
spouses, children, parents and siblings, as well as our
neighbors, co-workers and friends. The wounds made by those
we love are usually the most hurtful, but love also allows us to
heal these wounds. When we forgive someone, we offer that
person the possibility of starting again.
NOVENA AND DEVOTION TO ST. JOSEPH
As we celebrate the Christmas season we see the central role
St. Joseph plays in the Nativity Scene. As the foster father of
Jesus, he was the main provider, guide and defender of his family. The visits of the shepherds, Magi and the flight to Egypt
are proof of his essential leadership in the life of Jesus.
He is the patron of the Universal Church and provides assistance to a variety of human needs.
Every Wednesday, we come together as a community to receive his graces. On Wed., Jan. 14th at 7:00pm, we ask parishioners and friends to join us for this weekly service and reading
of your intentions. Members of the Knights of Columbus will
carry St. Joseph’s statue from Our Lady of Czestochowa
Chapel to the sanctuary. We appreciate your offerings.
CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY OF AMERICA
The Catholic University of America founded in 1887, is the
national university of The Catholic Church in the United States.
Located in Washington, D.C. it provides an academically rigorous education guided by Catholic intellectual tradition to nearly
7,000 students each year. More than 4,000 students directly
receive scholarship aid from this collection, including many
from our diocese.
It has a special responsibility to educate future leaders for our
Church and our nations. For example, five Cardinals and
ninety-five Bishops are among its alumni.
This collection will be taken at St. Joseph Basilica on the
weekend of January 17 & 18th. You may use the envelope in
your January packet to assist students across our country.
SAVE THE DATE - we will celebrate Catholic Schools
Week beginning with Liturgy at 9:30am on Sunday, January
25th. Msgr. James Moroney, Rector of St. John’s Seminary in
Brighton, MA will be our main celebrant and homilist.
This year’s theme is: Communities of Faith, Knowledge and
Service”. Our St. Joseph School students, faculty, staff and
Home School Association are planning many special events to
commemorate this week including Open House on Sun., Jan.
25th from 11:30am—1:00pm and Wed., Jan. 28th from 5:007:00pm. Shadow Day in all grades will be held on Thurs.
Jan. 29th from 8:00am—2:00pm. You must pre-register by

At that same Mass, the 13th Annual St. Joseph School
“Partners in Education Award” will be presented to worthy
individuals. To date, twenty-one deserving contributors to St.
Joseph School education have received this outstanding award.
FRIDAY NIGHT BINGO
Join us for BINGO every Friday in the St. Joseph School
Cafeteria. Doors open at 5:00pm, games begin at 6:45PM.
Door prizes-food available and free coffee. On Friday, January 16th we ask members of the Parish Council to join our
enthusiastic players and assist on that evening. We invite parishioners to come for an evening of relaxation with new
friends and the anticipation of being a lucky winner. Proceeds
benefit the parish and school.
ST. JOSEPH SCHOOL NEWS
On Tues. Dec., 23rd our school children, faculty, staff and
special guests were treated to a Santa Christmas Lunch Feast in
the school cafeteria.
Everyone in attendance enjoyed the good food and camaraderie in anticipation of Christmas. Thank you to all the volunteers for their support and toil to make this repast a success.
SJS would like to thank Angela Enman and Linda Manna,
mother and grandmother of our Kindergartner, Bobbi Enman
for their donation of two new griddles for our school kitchen.
Also, thank you to John Hester who spent most of his
Christmas break putting a fresh coat of paint on all the walls
and replacing many of the games and activity supplies in our
after care room.

Congratulations! - to Justyna Sudyka who recently received
the 2014-2015 Massachusetts Association of School Superintendents Award of Academic Excellence. Justyna is presently
the highest ranked student in the senior class at Shepherd Hill
High School and has achieved High Honors in every grading
term since her freshman year.
As an alumnus of St. Joseph School we are very proud of all
of Justyna’s accomplishments and that the education she received at our School is a clear indication of what our students
may attain in vaulting them into future careers. Thank you to

BASILICA CHILDREN’S CHOIRS CD’S
The new Saint Joseph Basilica Children’s Choirs CD,
featuring SJS Choir and Bazyliszki will be on sale after Masses
this weekend. This CD is a collection of 20 traditional and
contemporary Christmas Carols performed by the children of
St. Joseph School and Parish.
Although the Christmas season is about to end the tradition
of caroling lasts until February 2nd. May this uplifting music
extend your Christmas time and may you experience that great
Mystery once again. The cost of the CD is $10.

„Wszyscy spragnieni, przyjdźcie do wody.” (Iz 55, 1)
DZIEŃ MIGRACJI
W łączności z całym Kościołem w Stanach Zjednoczonych
obchodzimy dziś Światowy Dzień Migracji. Na uroczystej
Eucharystii o godz. 9:30 zaprezentują się dzieci z naszej szkoły
w procesji z flagami i strojami krajów, z których pochodzą ich
rodziny. Tematem przewodnim tegorocznych obchodów
są słowa: “We are one family under God”.
Po Mszy św. odbędzie się spotkane w szkolnej kafeterii
powiązane z niewielkim poczęstunkiem.
Święto dzisiejsze jest także „epifanią”, to znaczy
objawieniem
Bóstwa
Jezusa,
szczególnie
uroczystym ze względu na bezpośrednią interwencję
nieba. Proroctwo Izajasza o „Słudze Boga”, który
jest figurą Mesjasza, jest wstępem do tego. Prorok
przedstawia go w imieniu Pana: „Oto mój Sługa... Wybrany
mój, w którym mam upodobanie. Sprawiłem, że Duch mój na
Nim spoczął”. To jest wielka charakterystyka Chrystusa; jest
On w całym tego słowa znaczeniu „Sługą Boga”, całkowicie
poświęconym na Jego chwałę i służbę. Przychodząc na świat
powiedział: „Oto idę... abym spełniał wolę Twoją, Boże”. Jest
pełen Ducha Świętego i pod Jego wpływem rozwija swoją
zbawczą działalność, Bóg zaś ma w Nim upodobanie.

KONCERT KOLĘD
Dziś, o godz. 15:00 w naszej Bazylice odbędzie się tradycyjny
Koncert Kolęd z udziałem zaproszonych chórów z innych parafii.
To niesamowita okazja, aby jeszcze raz poczuć ducha Bożego
Narodzenia i wsłuchać się w piękne melodie i sentymentalne słowa.
Chóry zaprezentują po kilka utworów ze swojego repertuaru. W tym
roku będziemy mogli podziwiać chóry z polskich parafii w Salem,
Worcester i Dorchester.
Wstęp na koncert jest bezpłatny. Wszelkie dobrowolne ofiary są mile
widziane. Zostaną one wykorzystane na pokrycie kosztów poczęstunku
dla gości w PAV.
ZADANIE NA STYCZEŃ
Kiedy patrzymy w przyszłość, w nowy rok pełen nadziei i obietnic,
ale również wyzwań i obaw, zastanawiamy się cóż też Bóg dla nas
przygotował. Jednym z głównych zadań stojących przed nami jest
rodzina. W jej szerokim spektrum funkcji warta zauważenia jest jej
rola w kształtowaniu umiejętności przebaczenia, a dzieje się to między
innymi poprzez odkrywanie w rodzinie przebaczenia płynącego
od Boga. Bóg pokazuje nam swoją miłość przez to, że Jezus umarł za
nas wtedy, kiedy jeszcze byliśmy grzesznikami. Bycie
Chrześcijaninem oznacza spotkać Chrystusa i otrzymać Jego
przebaczenie. Jako katolicy po raz pierwszy otrzymujemy
przebaczenie w momencie Chrztu św., a potem odnawiamy je
w sakramencie pojednania.
Przebaczenie rozpoczyna się pośród tych, którzy są nam najbliżsi:
małżonkowie, dzieci, rodzice, rodzeństwo jak również sąsiedzi,
współpracownicy i przyjaciele. Rany zadane przez najbliższych
zwykle są najbardziej bolesne, ale miłość pozwala te rany leczyć.
Kiedy przebaczamy komuś, dajemy szansą na rozpoczęcie od nowa
wspólnej drogi.
NOWENNA DO ŚW. JÓZEFA
Przeżywając czas Bożego Narodzenia widzimy jak ważna rolę
w całym tym wydarzeniu odgrywa św. Józef. Jako przybrany ojciec
Jezusa zapewniał swojej rodzinie bezpieczeństwo, przewodził jej
i bronił. Odwiedziny pasterzy, wizyta trzech mędrców, a także
ucieczka do Egiptu wydatnie podkreślają przywódczą rolę Józefa. Tak
jak niegdyś dla swojej rodziny tak teraz jest dla całego Kościoła
Powszechnego patronem i opiekunem, oraz niezawodnym
pomocnikiem w różnorodnych sprawach wypełniających ludzkie
życie.
Każdej środy, gromadzimy się, aby z tej pomocy i wsparcia
skorzystać. W najbliższą środę również zgromadzimy się jako
wspólnota tych, którzy poszukują Bożej łaski przez ręce świętego
Patrona. W tym tygodniu figurę św. Józefa niosą Rycerze Kolumba.
THE CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY OF AMERICA
Katolicki Uniwersytet Ameryki założony w 1887 roku jest narodową
uczelnią Kościoła Katolickiego w Stanach Zjednoczonych z siedzibą
w Waszyngtonie, gdzie zapewnia edukację oparta na chrześcijańskiej
tradycji dla blisko 7000 studentów. Ponad połowa z nich otrzymuje
wsparcie w postaci stypendium. Wielu z tych, którzy korzystają z
pomocy pochodzi z naszej diecezji. Na nas wszystkich spoczywa
odpowiedzialność z kształcenie liderów chrześcijańskich dla Kościoła
i narodu. W tym względzie Uniwersytet należy do nas wszystkich,
niezależnie od tego, w której części kraju żyjemy. Do tej pory pięciu
kardynałów i aż dwudziestu dziewięciu biskupów rekrutuje się spośród
absolwentów tej uczelni
Uprzejmie prosimy o hojne ofiary w najbliższy weekend 17 i 18
stycznia, w czasie specjalnej zbiórki na wsparcie Uniwersytetu. Bóg

TYDZIEŃ SZKÓŁ KATOLICKICH
Tegoroczny Tydzień Szkół Katolickich rozpocznie się Msza św.
o godz. 9:30 w niedzielę 25 stycznia. Głównym celebransem
i kaznodzieją będzie ks. prałat James Moroney, rektor seminarium
w Bostonie. Tegorocznym hasłem są słowa: ”Communities of Faith,
Knowledge, and Service”. W naszej szkole nauczyciele i uczniowie

GRATULACJE
Serdecznie gratulujemy Justynie Sudyka, która ostatnio otrzymała
Massachusetts Association of School Superintendent Award
of Academic Excellence. Justyna osiągnęła High Honors we
wszystkich znaczących przedmiotach jako uczennica senior class
w Shepard Hill High School.
Jesteśmy bardzo dumni z jej osiągnięć i cieszymy się, że należy do
grona absolwentów naszej szkoły. Jej osiągnięcia to również dowód
na to, jak wcześniejsza edukacja może przyczynić się do osiągania
późniejszych sukcesów. Dziękujemy również jej rodzicom za to, że
wiele lat wcześniej zdecydowali się, aby Justyna była uczennicą
Szkoły św. Józefa.

Nowa płyta zawierająca utwory w wykonaniu dziecięcych chórów
naszej Bazyliki, zapowiadana przed kilkoma tygodniami, jest już
