„Ombra mai fu” from the opera „Xerxes” and „Lascia
ch’io pianga” from the opera „Rinaldo” by G.F. Hendel,

„Angelic Oboe” by E. Moricone from the movie

KEEP PRAYING
LISTENING TO GOD
St. Monica, whose feast we celebrate in August, is
often known as “the persistent mother.” She watched her
oldest son, Augustine, turn his back on his Christian faith.
Monica was exasperated. For years she gave up
talking directly to her son on the advice of a local bishop,
who told her that it was better to talk to God about
Augustine then to Augustine about God.
The mother never gave up praying for her son.
Eventually Augustine gave up his wild ways, was
baptized, and later ordained and named bishop of Hippo.
St. Augustine went on to become one of the Church’s
greatest scholars.
Today’s readings address the importance of persistent
prayer. Abraham, in spite of trepidation that he is
bothering the Lord, continues to ask about the fate of
Sodom and Gomorrah. Jesus, in Luke’s Gospel, tells his
disciples to “ask and you will receive; seek and you will
find; knock and the door will be opened to you” (Luke
11:9). This is our charge: keep praying.
Familiarity, in the case of the Lord’s Prayer, probably
hasn’t bred contempt in most of us, but it certainly can
breed a kind of inertia. The words we speak in prayer run
the same risks as all our other human words: they can be
spoken hastily, thoughtlessly, carelessly. In a manner
parallel to the words we say in the Lord’s Prayer “forgive us as we forgive others”- today might be the day
to invite God to “listen to us as well as we listen to you.”
Today might be the day to listen to the Lord’s Prayer with
newly attentive ears.
Let us learn from the example of Luke’s Jesus, who
would not instruct others how to pray until he himself had
been a man of prayer. Moreover, listen carefully to the
follow-up Jesus gives for the prayer itself. In our quickfix society we must heed the call to persistence; in a
world that puts glib explanations on difficult situations we
must continue to seek and knock; in our all-toohumanness, we must be open to the patience, grace, and
wisdom of the will of God. Do we want the Lord to listen
to our voice? Maybe we can start by listening to God’s.

17 NIEDZIELA OKRESU ZWYKŁEGO
Bóg rzekł do Abrahama: Skarga na Sodomę i
Gomorę głośno się rozlega, bo występki ich
[mieszkańców] są bardzo ciężkie. Chcę więc iść i
zobaczyć, czy postępują tak, jak głosi oskarżenie, które
do Mnie doszło, czy nie; dowiem się. Wtedy to ludzie ci
odeszli w stronę Sodomy, a Abraham stał dalej przed
Panem. Zbliżywszy się do Niego, Abraham rzekł: Czy
zamierzasz wygubić sprawiedliwych wespół z
bezbożnymi? Może w tym mieście jest pięćdziesięciu
sprawiedliwych; czy także zniszczysz to miasto i nie
przebaczysz mu przez wzgląd na owych pięćdziesięciu
sprawiedliwych, którzy w nim mieszkają? O, nie dopuść
do tego, aby zginęli sprawiedliwi z bezbożnymi, aby
stało się sprawiedliwemu to samo, co bezbożnemu! O,
nie dopuść do tego! Czyż Ten, który jest sędzią nad całą
ziemią, mógłby postąpić niesprawiedliwie? Pan
odpowiedział: Jeżeli znajdę w Sodomie pięćdziesięciu
sprawiedliwych, przebaczę całemu miastu przez wzgląd
na nich. Rzekł znowu Abraham: Pozwól, o Panie, że
jeszcze ośmielę się mówić do Ciebie, choć jestem pyłem
i prochem. Gdyby wśród tych pięćdziesięciu
sprawiedliwych zabrakło pięciu, czy z braku tych pięciu
zniszczysz całe miasto? Pan rzekł: Nie zniszczę, jeśli
znajdę tam czterdziestu pięciu. Abraham znów odezwał
się tymi słowami: A może znalazłoby się tam
czterdziestu? Pan rzekł: Nie dokonam zniszczenia przez
wzgląd na tych czterdziestu. Wtedy Abraham
powiedział: Niech się nie gniewa Pan, jeśli rzeknę:
może znalazłoby się tam trzydziestu? A na to Pan: Nie
dokonam zniszczenia, jeśli znajdę tam trzydziestu. Rzekł
Abraham: Pozwól, o Panie, że ośmielę się zapytać:
gdyby znalazło się tam dwudziestu? Pan odpowiedział:
Nie zniszczę przez wzgląd na tych dwudziestu. Na to
Abraham: O, racz się nie gniewać, Panie, jeśli raz
jeszcze zapytam: gdyby znalazło się tam dziesięciu?
Odpowiedział Pan: Nie zniszczę przez wzgląd na tych
dziesięciu. Księga Rodzaju 18:20-32
REFLEKSJA NAD CZYTANIAMI NIEDZIELNYMI...
„Nie dopuść do tego, aby zginęli sprawiedliwi
z bezbożnymi” – prosił Boga Abraham, wstawiając się
za mieszkańcami Sodomy i Gomory. Sprawiedliwa
prośba. A jednak Bóg objawia nam w Chrystusie
sprawiedliwość większą: Jego Syn oddaje życie za
niesprawiedliwych, aby ich ocalić, i czyni ich swoimi
dziećmi, posyłając im Ducha Świętego. To daje podstawy
do niezachwianej ufności, pewnej Ojcowskiego serca
Boga, które w odpowiedzi na nasze prośby gotowe jest
dać nam nieskończenie więcej, niż prosimy czy
rozumiemy, i które nikomu nie odmawia miłosierdzia.

La familiaridad con que recitamos el Padre Nuestro
puede hacer que muchos no lo apreciemos y lo hagamos
por inercia. Las palabras que decimos en la oración corren
el mismo riesgo que todas nuestras otras palabras humanas:
pueden ser dichas con prisa, sin pensar y sin cuidado. De
modo paralelo a las palabras que decimos en el Padre
Nuestro –“perdona nuestras ofensas como nosotros
perdonamos a los que nos ofenden”– hoy puede ser el día
en que Dios nos invita a decir “escúchanos como nosotros
te escuchamos”. Hoy puede ser el día para escuchar el
Padre Nuestro con nuevos oídos muy atentos.
Aprendamos del ejemplo de Jesús en Lucas, quien no
instruyó a otros sobre cómo rezar sin haber sido antes un
hombre de oración. Más aún, escucha cuidadosamente lo
que Jesús dice sobre cómo orar. En nuestra sociedad de
arreglos rápidos, necesitamos oír el llamado a la
perseverancia; en un mundo que ofrece explicaciones
simplistas sobre situaciones difíciles, debemos continuar
buscando y tocando a la puerta; por ser meros humanos,
debemos estar abiertos a la paciencia, la gracia y la
sabiduría de la voluntad de Dios. ¿Queremos que el Señor
escuche nuestra voz? Tal vez debemos comenzar por
escuchar la voz de Dios.
