For the first four centuries or so, there seems not to
have been a sense of marriage as a church institution.
Christians followed civil law, which kept the wedding in
a family setting. Bishops wanted people to be good citizens insofar as possible, and so they recognized the government’s role in marriage. In general, they expected
Christians to know that marriage was good, that marriage
to other Christians was best, and to take it easy on the
wild wedding parties. They agreed that marriage was a
divine institution, that Christ blessed it especially, and
they loved referring to the miracle at the wedding feast of
Cana. Still, even when Christianity became the official
religion of the empire in 380, marriage remained a family
matter.
On wedding days people gathered in the bride’s
house, where the father would “give her hand” to her husband, draping a garland of flowers over the couple. There
were no official words to say, there was no blessing to be
given. Everyone walked in procession to the bride’s new
home for the concluding rites and the feast. In the Eastern
Empire, it soon became customary to invite a priest or
bishop to give a blessing at the meal or the day before. It
was a nice thing to do, completely optional, but had a
“photo-op” feel to it that was widely emulated. Before
long, at least in the East, it looked as if the priest were
joining the couple in marriage and blessing the union.

It is doubtful that Saint Paul, when he sat down to
write what we now know as the thirteenth chapter of First
Corinthians, knew that he was penning what was to
become one of the keystones of Christian ethics. In this
brief passage, he set down ideals about love that have
held fast through the centuries. Sometimes we may think
that because these are ideals to which we aspire, we are
excused from them in our daily living.
But what Paul was writing was a letter to his friends,
providing them with some sound advice about what it
meant - and still means - to live in love, day by day, as a
follower of Christ. We find in his words to his friends a
broadening of the great commands of Jesus to love God
and neighbor. Today we hear what this love must look
like in our own actions, and how it ought to guide our
relationships with others.

SAINT OF THE DAY - Saint Blaise (Feb. 3rd)
Blase was a well educated Physician who became
Bishop of Sebaste in Armenia. He was persecuted by
Agricola, The famous Roman general, who ordered Blaise
to renounce his faith. When Blase refused he was thrown
into prison where he helped sick prisoners and famously
saved a child who was choking on a fish bone. Blaise
refused to renounce his faith and was tortured by having
his flesh torn with wool combs. He was finally beheaded
on the orders of Agricola. Today, Saint Blaise is the
patron of Throat problems and the Wool trade. A
traditional blessing of the throats will take place on St.
Blasé’s Memorial Day (this Wednesday) at the 9:00 am
Eucharist.

Pan skierował do mnie następujące słowo: Zanim
ukształtowałem cię w łonie matki, znałem cię, nim
przyszedłeś na świat, poświęciłem cię, prorokiem dla
narodów ustanowiłem cię. Ty zaś przepasz swoje biodra,
wstań i mów wszystko, co ci rozkażę. Nie lękaj się ich,
bym cię czasem nie napełnił lękiem przed nimi. A oto Ja
czynię cię dzisiaj twierdzą warowną, kolumną żelazną i
murem spiżowym przeciw całej ziemi, przeciw królom
judzkim i ich przywódcom, ich kapłanom i ludowi tej

Począł więc mówić do nich: Dziś spełniły się te słowa
Pisma, któreście słyszeli. A wszyscy przyświadczali Mu i
dziwili się pełnym wdzięku słowom, które płynęły z ust
Jego. I mówili: Czy nie jest to syn Józefa? Wtedy rzekł do
nich: Z pewnością powiecie Mi to przysłowie: Lekarzu,
ulecz samego siebie; dokonajże i tu w swojej ojczyźnie
tego, co wydarzyło się, jak słyszeliśmy, w Kafarnaum. I
dodał: Zaprawdę, powiadam wam: żaden prorok nie jest
mile widziany w swojej ojczyźnie. Naprawdę, mówię
wam: Wiele wdów było w Izraelu za czasów Eliasza,
kiedy niebo pozostawało zamknięte przez trzy lata i sześć
miesięcy, tak że wielki głód panował w całym kraju; a
Eliasz do żadnej z nich nie został posłany, tylko do owej
wdowy w Sarepcie Sydońskiej. I wielu trędowatych było w
Izraelu za proroka Elizeusza, a żaden z nich nie został
oczyszczony, tylko Syryjczyk Naaman. Na te słowa
wszyscy w synagodze unieśli się gniewem. Porwali Go z
miejsca, wyrzucili Go z miasta i wyprowadzili aż na stok
góry, na której ich miasto było zbudowane, aby Go
strącić. On jednak przeszedłszy pośród nich oddalił się.

REFLEKSA NA TEMAT EWANGELII...
W dzisiejszej liturgii słowa, chwilę po Pawłowym
Hymnie o miłości, usłyszymy Jezusa przemawiającego do
mieszkańców Nazaretu. Początkowo „dziwili się [oni]
pełnym wdzięku słowom, które płynęły z ust Jego”, lecz
później zaczęli o Nim powątpiewać, a nawet unieśli się
gniewem i chcieli Go strącić ze skały... Można być tak
blisko Boga, słyszeć Jego słowo, a jednak nie wierzyć.
Wierzyć w Jezusa to rozpoznać w Nim Syna Bożego,
wcielenie Bożej miłości. Niestety, właśnie prawdziwa
miłość bywa często nierozpoznana, pogardzana

EL GRAN HIMNO AL AMOR
Cabe dudar que, cuando San Pablo se sentó a escribir
lo que ahora conocemos como el capítulo trece de la
primera carta a los corintios, supiera que lo que estaba
escribiendo se convertiría en una clave principal de la
ética cristiana. En este breve pasaje, ha consignado
ideales sobre el amor que se han mantenido firmes en el
transcurso de los siglos. A veces pensamos que porque
estos son sólo ideales a los que uno aspira, estamos libres
de no practicarlos en nuestra vida diaria.
Lo que Pablo estaba escribiendo era una carta a sus
amigos, dándoles buenos consejos sobre lo que
significaba – y todavía significa– vivir en el amor, día a
día, en seguimiento de Cristo. Encontramos en las
palabras a sus amigos una ampliación del gran
mandamiento de Jesús de amar a Dios y al prójimo. Hoy
en día escuchamos cómo este amor debe expresarse en
nuestras acciones, y cómo debe regir nuestras relaciones
con los demás.

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE
El día 3 de Febrero se celebra entre misas, mariachis,
fuegos artificiales y muchas expresiones de religiosidad
popular, la fiesta de Nuestra Señora de la Concepción de
Suyapa en Honduras. Es significativo que en este año la
fiesta cae un sábado, ya que fue un sábado del mes de
febrero, cuando Alejandro Colindres, un joven humilde
labrador, y Jorge Martínez, un niño de ocho años, la
encontraron.
Según la tradición estos llegaron cansados a la
quebrada del Piligüín. Acostándose sobre el suelo,
Alejandro sintió lo que le parecía una piedra en su
espalda. Por más que intentaba arrojarla lejos, cuando se
acostaba sentía la misma piedra. Por fin en lugar de
tirarla, la puso en su mochila y al amanecer descubrió que
no era piedra sino una pequeña imagen de María (6.5 cm.)
con rostro indígena tallada en madera.
En 1780 se le construyó un templo y en 1796 se
registró su primer milagro. El Papa Pió XII la proclamó
Patrona de la República de Honduras en 1925. En las
advocaciones latinoamericanas ella es nombrada como la
fortaleza de los humildes.
