Stewardship Note: “Let us keep our eyes fixed on Jesus, who
inspires and perfects our faith.” The key to balancing the everyday demands made on us with the limited amounts of time,
talent and treasure we possess is PRIORITY. When we accept
Jesus’ priority, we do not squander our gifts.
TWENTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
August 18, 2013
[Jesus] has endured the cross, despising its shame, and
has taken his seat at the right of the throne of God.
-Hebrews 12:2
THE COST OF DISCIPLESHIP
Today’s responsorial psalm, Psalm 40, is
more familiar to us with the refrain “Here am I,
Lord.” This “Here am I” is Jeremiah’s great
prophetic response to God’s call. But today’s
story of Jeremiah and the refrain” “Lord, come
to my aid!” reminds us that there are always two
sides to following the call of God. The author of the Letter to
the Hebrews knew this, too. He reminded his readers that even
weighted down with burdens and sins, we can still persevere by
keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus, who himself knew the shame
and pain of the cross, but saw beyond it to the joy of sitting at
the right of the throne of God. Jesus himself gave the disciples
a “sneak preview” of a baptism that would not be as wondrous
as the one in the Jordan that inaugurated his ministry, but
would be one of fire and anguish. Today’s words from scripture may not be terribly soothing, but in their honesty and
strength we can acknowledge the difficulties of daily discipleship and take comfort in the assurance of our own salvation in
Christ.
This week’s second collection is designated
for the Church in Central and Eastern Europe.

“PRIDE OF POLONIA” AWARD
Adam Cardinal Maida’s office has announced that Zenon
Szlyk, M.D., of Dudley, MA will be the recipient of the 2013
“Pride of Polonia” Award on August 25th in Doylestown, PA at
Our Lady of Czestochowa Shrine. This miraculous icon attracts
thousands of people from various states of our country. At this
celebration, it has been a tradition to recognize an individual
who makes a significant difference in the life of the PolishAmerican community .
Dr. Szlyk is the son of Polish immigrants and a graduate of
Harvard University and Georgetown Medical School. He is a
charter member of the Quo Vadis Club, former Chairman of the
Board of Webster First Federal Credit Union, past President of
the John Paul II Foundation of New England and has been actively involved in the campaign for the Polish Home in Rome.
For many years he provided extensive community service as a
medical doctor in the region.
In addition, Dr. Szlyk’s personal integrity, loyalty to the
Church and adherence to religious and cultural values of our
Polish heritage is commendable.
On behalf of our St. Joseph Parish we extend Best Wishes
and Congratulations to Dr. Szlyk and his children!
END OF FISCAL YEAR
As the diocesan fiscal year ends on August 31 we want to
acknowledge your contributions throughout the year. If, for
any reason, you missed some of your contributions, especially
to Diocesan Obligations, we would greatly appreciate your support and generosity at this critical time of the year.
We would like to close the books and begin the new 20132014 year on a positive note.
NOVENA AND DEVOTION TO ST. JOSEPH
On Wednesday, August, 21st at 7:00pm the Sacred Heart
Society will join parishioners for our weekly Novena and Devotion to our Patron Saint.
St. Joseph has been an inspiration to many and is perhaps one
of the most beloved saints among Catholics today. Since his
appearance in the Bible is relatively brief and rather obscure it
leaves us with little knowledge of who he was and what drove
his devotion to and unwavering trust in the Lord. His life as a
husband, foster father, a craftsman, a traveler and a guide can
motivate us through his strength and grace to become a role
model for the universal Church.
Every Wednesday the Mass will be celebrated for the intentions placed in the petition box in the Chapel.
Please remember to write your intentions legibly on forms
available in the Chapel.
PILGRIMAGE TO POLAND
Our Pilgrimage to Poland is scheduled for June 24, 2014
through July 5, 2014 (10 nights & 11 days). We will depart
from Boston via Frankfurt to Gdansk and visit Warsaw, Czestochowa, Zakopane and Kraków. To assure your space please
make reservations early. Brochures are available at the entrances to the Basilica.
DEVOTIONAL LIFE
From time to time we hear the words devotional life, devotional times, devotions, etc. These words bring certain associations to our mind. Perhaps, we reflect on the religious practices
of our parents or reminisce on attending various devotions during childhood in church or participating in Para-Liturgical services at our Basilica. The purpose of all these devotions is to
build a stronger relationship with God. To get closer to God,
or to re-discover His will in our life, doesn’t happen accidently,
it requires a certain determination on our part.
We need a regular time and place to meet with God and reflect what God reveals to us through His scripture and through
the Church teaching.
For some, devotional time in church
seems to be inadequate. We need additional effort to focus on
the meaning of our spiritual growth and maturity in Christ. As
we foster our personal devotional life, our passion for a closer
relationship with God expands.
What are the ways to develop a deeper devotional life? (to
be continued).

To maintain the grounds of our Parish takes considerable
time and talent. We are very fortunate to have three volunteers
step up to this back breaking task. Thank you to Sylvia Kitka,

The last two wars changed the borders of Poland and many
Polish people who were born there had to stay there.
Germany and France are each home to about 1 million
people—Canada has 400,000—Brazil has 200,000—Australia
has 150,000—Great Britain 200,000 and 100,000 in Argentina.

KRONIKA PARAFIALNA
DWUDZIESTA NIEDZIELA ZWYKŁA
18 sierpnia 2013
"Jezus zamiast radości, którą Mu obiecywano, przecierpiał krzyż,
nie bacząc na jego hańbę, i zasiadł po prawicy tronu Boga." (Hbr 12, 2)
Święty Paweł zmagania na drodze ku
chrześcijańskiej
doskonałości
nazywa
„zawodami”. A zatem nie będzie lekko! Jezus
potwierdza to z całą mocą. Mówi: „Przyszedłem
rzucić ogień na ziemię i jakże bardzo pragnę,
żeby on zapłonął!”. Cóż to oznacza? Stary
porządek, zbudowany na naszych złych przyzwyczajeniach,
będzie musiał zostać zburzony. Czeka nas wewnętrzna walka
i przeorganizowanie dotychczasowej hierarchii wartości,
abyśmy osiągnęli „obiecane dziedzictwo, które przewyższa
wszelkie pragnienia”.
Dzisiejsza druga kolekta jest przeznaczona na pomoc
Kościołowi w Europie Środkowej i Wschodniej.

WARTO WIEDZIEĆ
Ktoś mnie kiedyś zapytał: ilu polaków żyje poza granicami
Polski? Największa liczba Polaków żyje w Stanach
Zjednoczonych - około 10 milionów. Druga co do wielkości
grupa Polaków żyje w byłym Związku Radzieckim - około 2,5
miliona na Białorusi, Ukrainie, Litwie Kazachstanie i Łotwie.
Ostatnie dwie wojny bardzo zmieniły granice Polski i wielu
Polaków pozostało w rodzinnych stronach, które teraz ni należą
do Polski.
Niemcy i Francja są domem około miliona Polaków w
każdym państwie. W kanadzie mieszka 400 tyś., w Brazylii 200
tyś., w Australii, 200 tyś., w Anglii 200 tyś. oraz 100 tyś w
Argentynie. Istnieje jeszcze całe mnóstwo innych krajów, gdzie
żyją pomniejsze grupy naszych rodaków. W całości poza
granicami Polski przebywa około 15 milionów Polaków. W
granicach Polski mieszka obecnie około 40 milionów Polaków.
