If you do not pray you are just as sure to lose your soul. – St. Alphonsus Liguori SANCTUARY VOTIVE CANDLES For the week of July 31 through August 6, 2011 Blessed Mother Altar Candle 1 & 2 - In loving memory of Louis C. Kondek Given by Wife, Nellie & family EIGHTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME July 31, 2011 All you who are thirsty, come to the water! –Isaiah 55:1a Our Deepest Needs. The word of God serves up a tremendous feast for us today. Isaiah beckons all who hunger and thirst to come to the Lord for satisfaction. The psalmist cries out, “The hand of the Lord feeds us; he answers all our needs: (Psalm 145:16). Saint Paul tells us that nothing can separate us from the love of God. Finally, in the Gospel, we hear the story of the miraculous feeding of over five thousand people from a mere five loaves and two fish. Most of us have our material needs met on a day-today basis. These scriptures, nevertheless, have much to say to the contemporary believer. We must ask ourselves, “Where are my deepest hungers? Where are my thirsts?” After material needs are satisfied and, in some cases, oversatisfied, many people still experience a deep longing for spiritual balance and well-being. As the loaves and fish are multiplied in today’s Gospel, perhaps our prayer can be a longing for the satisfaction of the deepest needs that only God can fill. The second collection this weekend is for the Diocesan Mission Cooperation Appeal JULY CASH CALENDAR WINNERS July 25-$50 Frances Petrin, Webster; July 26-$50 Lisa Sabacinski, Webster; July 27-$50 Angie Walalis, Webster; July 28-$50 Betty Sabaj, Webster; July 29-$75 Norma Giroux, Webster; July 30-$50 Sylvia Kitka, Webster; July 31-$500 Leo Pedone, Worcester. Page 3 31 July 2011 - 31 lipca 2011 r. SCHOOL AND THE PARISH JUBILEE On Wednesday of this week, the Worcester Telegram printed a very nice personal reflection on the quality of liberal arts education written by a student from Assumption College. “Early education in the United States was rooted in the classical liberal education. It allowed people to be what they wanted to be.” Classical education, says Jonathan J. Bishop, helped him to be free from the prison of insidious ideologies. He claims that in his early years he was swept by the tides of television and considered its message as the gospel. Now, after obtaining a liberal education, he could easily navigate between right and wrong ideas which bring meaning and fulfillment to his life. Most likely, our forefathers also understood the value of classical and Catholic education when they established St. Joseph School over a century ago. People today, more than during early days, look for academic quality, better structure, safety, discipline and above all religious values integrated with the curriculum. And this is why they send their children to a Catholic school. Our parish was characterized by unambiguous support of the school throughout its existence. Catholic education became a mission not only of the parents but also the grandparents and every parishioner. Proper education and formation of young minds is indeed a project, not an individual one, but of the whole community. Looking back across the previous generations we see thousands of young people whose lives were deeply influenced by the solid doctrine and character formation practices in our school. As we prepare for the Jubilee Celebration, the school must be an integral part of its great story of St. Joseph Parish. STEWARDSHIP The scripture readings during the last few Sundays were very plain and yet challenging. They compel us to think seriously about life. What is indeed the treasure of our life to which we are ready to commit ourselves? What are the deepest longings of the human soul? The prophet Isaiah in today’s liturgy says, “ why spend your money if it is not bread and your wages for what fails to satisfy”? Participation in Sunday divine worship, acts of charity and kindness, have a positive and therapeutic influence on the life of a person. Needless to say, the Sunday offering expresses our attitude, generosity and faith. In addition, good Catholics feel the need to share with God extra-ordinary blessings such as income from investments, selling of the house, etc., in fact, these extra-ordinary offerings allows the Church to spread the Good News by various programs, radio and television messages. The majority of people are longing despite their wealth for a spiritual balance, well-being and healing. If only God can fill all human desire and fulfill all its dreams, then we have to reorganize our priorities, identify our goals and commit ourselves to Jesus Christ and His Church. I want to thank all parishioners for their support and extraordinary generosity, especially for the Diocesan Obligations. Due to an increase in collections, we are able to pay more towards our monthly obligation. Next Sunday’s collection is the last one for that purpose before the close of our fiscal year. I would appreciate your consideration of a generous offering for the month of August in the Diocesan Obligation envelope. ST. JOSEPH POLISH WOMEN’S CLUB The Executive Board will meet on Tuesday, August 2, 2011 at 6:30 p.m. in the Parish Conference Room. REFLECTION ON ST. ANNE CELEBRATION IN STURBRIDGE On Monday, July 25th Saint Joseph Basilica participated in a Polish Day at St. Anne Shrine in Sturbridge, MA as part of the celebration of the Feast of St. Anne. I was pleased with the presence of people from our parish including our choir, members of St. Anne Society, Altar Servers, children in Polish costumes and parishioners. This special day was part of a nine-days-long novena celebration in honoring St. Anne on July 26th. The Shrine is a church or other sacred place to which people make pilgrimages for pious religious reasons. Shrines are places in which the grace of God is available in a more readily way. Other shrines in the world are associated with miracles which happened there, e.g. Our Lady of Guadalupe, Fatima, Lourdes, etc. There are also shrines which are replicas of these famous shrines in different lands. The first shrine to St. Anne was built in St. Constantinople in the 8th century. Pilgrimage to a shrine is a very popular form of prayer. It involves leaving your home, your familiar environment, accepting the inconveniences and difficulty of travel in a particular intention which is dear to the individual. The walking pilgrimage is very popular in many countries of the world, including the United States. If God takes under consideration our personal sacrifice and endurance of a sometimes long journey to grant us the needed grace, then it is worth to make the pilgrimage. The destiny of the pilgrimage is always a shrine where the people usually go to confession, participate in the Eucharist and other devotional practices. Here at St. Joseph Basilica on Tuesday, July 26th members of the St. Anne Society and their friends also made a mini pilgrimage. During the celebration of Mass, Mrs. Genevieve Lariviere, President of the Society, introduced new members and at the same time, the children who received the Sacrament of Baptism, this past year, were enrolled into the protection of St. Anne. We welcome Christine Dudek, Pauline Fallon, Cindi Gardner, Patricia Hast, Patricia Mangen and Charlotte Plouffe to the St. Anne Society. May God bless all those who venerate St. Anne, Mother of Blessed Mary. POLISH SATURDAY SCHOOL DONATION On May 14th 2011 Polish Saturday School celebrated its 10th anniversary with a banquet that gathered more than 200 guests. The school was established in our parish with a purpose to teach Polish language, history, culture and traditions to the generations of young Polish-Americans. On the occasion of their Jubilee the school presented a gift of $300 to St. Joseph Basilica and $1,500 to St. Joseph School in appreciation for the use of the school facilities on Saturdays during the school year. We are most grateful for this gift and wish them many years of success. Otóó sanktuarium to koÑció», bdï inne Ñwi“te miejsce do którego udaj si“ pielgrzymi, gdyó tam w sposób szczególny Bóg obdarza wiernych swoj »ask. Sanktuaria powstaj w miejscach, gdzie Bóg obdarzy» wiernych »ask cudu albo teó innego rodzaju szczególnym darem s»uócym dla zbudowania i utwierdzenia wiary. Z istnieniem sanktuariów wióe si“ tradycja pielgrzymowania jako forma modlitwy i ofiary.
