Do you prepare for Mass each week or do you just show up and expect to be entertained? SANCTUARY VOTIVE CANDLES For the week of December 20 through December 26 Blessed Mother Altar Candle I In loving memory of Henry Dowgiewicz and Komorek Family Given by Gladys Dowgiewicz and family Main Altar Candle I For all the faithful of St. Joseph Basilica. May the Savior bestow peace and joy on our families and Basilica Given by Msgr. Anthony Czarnecki FOURTH SUNDAY OF ADVENT December 20, 2015 O LORD of hosts, look down from heaven and see; take care of this vine, and protect what your right hand has planted. — Psalm 80:15–16 A NEW ORDER “O, Little Town of Bethlehem.” A Philadelphia clergyman named Phillips Brooks penned these popular words back in the mid -1800s, but the prophet Micah could have used them first. Micah knew that from small packages great treasures come. In today’s first reading, he knew that from tiny Bethlehem would come the Lord. The writer in Hebrews explains that Christ came to us to do the will of God by establishing a new order and by becoming our perfect sacrifice. And Luke tells us that Elizabeth and John, the infant in her womb, understand that great and wondrous things are at hand with the coming of the Lord. This is the Fourth Sunday of Advent. Soon we celebrate anew the fruit of Mary’s womb. As we are told in Hebrews, Jesus’ new order is being established even today. And as Micah proclaims, his greatness is reaching even now to the ends of the earth. The second collection this week is for the Retirement Fund for Religious. Please be generous. HOSPITALITY COMMITTEE - invites parishioners and friends to the school cafeteria on Saturday, Dec. 19th after 4:00pm mass for a supper of delicious hot soups, stews, chili, etc., including bread and pastry. There is no cost to join us to share companionship in the spirit of our common friendship. I-25 Club Winner for 13th week #160—David Dery Page 3 Boy Scout Pancake Breakfast with Santa - Sun., Dec. 20th 9:00am—noon in school cafeteria Pierogi pickup in school - Sat., Dec. 19th - 2:00—5:30pm Sun., Dec. 20th - 9:00 - 10:30am ADVENT CANDLES On this Fourth Week of Advent, we will light the last purple candle, oftentimes called the “Angel’s Candle”, which represents peace. According to tradition, on Christmas Eve, the white center candle will be lit. This candle is called the “Christ Candle” and represents the life of Christ that has come into the world. The color white signifies purity. Christ is the sinless, spotless, pure Savior. Also, those who receive Christ as Savior are washed of their sins and made whiter than snow. In this manner, Christian families keep Christ at the center of Christmas and parents can emphasize to their children the true meaning of Christmas. REMINDER - Reconciliation Service will be held on Monday, December 21st at 6:00pm at our Basilica. Clergy from various parishes will assist to facilitate reconciliation for your convenience. Jubilee Year of Mercy In proclaiming the Jubilee Year of Mercy, Pope Francis proclaimed his desire that this Holy Year be “steeped in mercy,” we as disciples “go out to every man and woman,” bringing the “balm of mercy” to “believers and those far away, as a sign that the Kingdom of God is already present in our midst!” (Misericordiae Vultus, 5). In her visitation of Elizabeth, Mary beautifully presents just such an image. Despite the perils of her pregnancy, not to mention her preoccupations as a young unwed mother, Mary instantly, unselfishly, “goes out” of herself, hastening far and over dangerous terrain, to “bring the balm of God’s tender mercy” in assistance rendered to her older relative. Last Sunday, Bishop McManus following Pope Francis’ proclamation opened the door to the Jubilee Year of Mercy in our Diocese and challenged everyone to take advantage of the merciful love bestowed in abundance for the faithful. The Bishop encouraged the people to undertake a pilgrimage to designated churches in the Diocese. St. Joseph Basilica was named as a holy site for Holy Pilgrimages with six other churches. Our day of proclamation of the Jubilee will be announced after Christmas. Novena to the Infant Jesus— began at devotions on Dec. 16th and continues until Dec. 24th following 6:30am Mass. We invite parishioners to participate in the Novena in a particular intention at our Basilica or in your home. Prayer cards are available at the entrances of the church . CHRISTMAS SHARING Thank you to our parishioners for their extraordinary giving and sharing through your donations to the “ANGEL TREE”. To make someone’s Christmas brighter is the purpose of this giving tree and once again we accomplished our goal. May every good deed we do for others, especially at this time of the year be rewarded by God. It is customary throughout our country that a Christmas gift to Jesus is equal to match your monthly contribution. ATTENTION: If you want to post an announcement into the Dec. 27th bulletin, information must be received at the rectory before Dec. 21 at 10:00am. St. Joseph Basilica Altar Guild - kindly requests your assistance in preparing the interior of our Basilica for Christmas. If you have some spare time, please call Fred and Sylvia Kitka at (508) 943-0201 for details. OUR ANNUAL CHRISTMAS PAGEANT It wouldn’t be Christmas in Webster if our St. Joseph School students did not open this special time of year with their Annual Pageant. This year, they again delighted their audience with an enthusiastic performance of “The Second Noel” at the Bartlett High School Auditorium. Thank you to the school administration, faculty, staff, parents and especially Play Directors, Kelly Bailey and Derek Sylvester for their involvement to showcase our talented students. Congratulations to all for a job well done! DEVOTION AND NOVENA TO ST. JOSEPH Please join us with family and friends on Wednesday, Dec., 23rd at 7:00pm for our weekly Devotion and Novena to our Patron. During this special time of the year we have the opportunity to ask for God’s graces to deepen our spiritual life through the intercession of St. Joseph. The Knights of Columbus will participate in this devotion. Prayer request forms for your personal intention are available in the Chapel. We appreciate your offerings. CHRISTMAS VIGIL (WIGILIA) According to tradition on the Vigil of Christmas, we share the blessed Oplatek with family during the Vigil supper. This custom unites the past with the present, heaven with earth. May your family be united in the spirit of joy, love and peace. Oplatki are available in the sacristy or rectory-suggested offering $3. Wejrzyj z nieba, zobacz i nawiedź tę winorośl; i chroń tę, którą zasadziła Twa prawica,.” Oto Zbawiciel przychodzi, aby odnowić nasze serca i uczynić nas synami i córkami Boga, braćmi i siostrami dla siebie nawzajem. Druga kolekta dzisiejszej niedzieli jest przeznaczona na Retirement Found for Religious. 18:00. Zachęcamy i zapraszamy do skorzystania z Sakramentu Pojednania przed nadchodzącymi Świętami Narodzenia Pańskiego. Nowenna potrwa do 24 grudnia włącznie.
