“The Medical Activity of the Moravian Missionaries in the Indian Himalayas (18531956)”

The article presents the history and determinants of the medical activity of the
Moravian Missionaries among the indigenous population of the Western Himalayas. Their
presence on this territory has been the focus of numerous publications in the English and
German literature of the subject, though remaining virtually unknown in Poland. However,
the medical aspect of their activity has not been studied thoroughly to date. To facilitate
further inquiry, I have included many details in my text, and much attention was paid to
precise references to the sources.
The Moravian Missionaries were the first ones to introduce European methods of
treatment in the high mountain districts of Northern India. This type of activity had serious
cultural consequences, as it meant a secularization of medical practices. Its effects were also
reflected in the local awareness and civic identity of the native inhabitants.

W artykule omówiono dzieje i uwarunkowania działalności leczniczej misjonarzy
morawskich prowadzonej wśród rdzennych mieszkańców zachodnich Himalajów. Co prawda
problematyka ich obecności na omawianym obszarze była niejednokrotnie poruszona w
angielsko- i niemieckojęzycznej literaturze przedmiotu, choć równocześnie pozostała niemal
nieznana w Polsce, jednak aspekt medyczny obecności morawian nie doczekał się dotychczas
wnikliwego opracowania. Z tego też powodu w tekście przytoczyłem wiele szczegółów, które
mogą stanowić pomoc w dalszych badaniach i precyzyjnie odwoływałem się do źródeł.
Misjonarze morawscy zapoczątkowali wprowadzanie europejskich metod leczenia na
terenie wysokogórskich rejonów północnych Indii. Ten typ aktywności miał poważne
konsekwencje kulturowe wynikające z procesu sekularyzacji lecznictwa, a także zmian
świadomości lokalnej i tożsamości obywatelskiej rdzennych mieszkańców.
