CATHOLIC RELIEF SERVICES
“For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and
you gave me drink, a stranger and you welcome me.” These
words remind us of the dignity of every person, created in
God’s image and likeness. It is for this reason that we join with
other parishes around the country in the Annual Collection for
Catholic Relief Services next weekend.
Please be generous as through your kindness we can help
ease the burdens of our brothers and sisters around the globe.
Stewardship Note: “You shall not carve idols for yourselves
in the shape of anything. . . .” Have you created idols for yourself in different shapes? An idol can be in the shape of money,
sports, fashion, travel, or anything else we value more than God
THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT
March 11, 2012
“I, the Lord, am your God . . . .
You shall not have other gods besides me.” - Exodus 20:2a, 3
TOTAL ALLEGIANCE
In previous weeks we have seen how the theme of covenant—as a preparation for the baptismal covenant celebrated at
Easter—occupies an important place in our cycle of Lenten
readings. The notion of covenant as a relationship between two
parties carries with it an expectation of mutual accountability
and fidelity to the terms of the covenant. When God forged the
covenant with the Jewish people on Mt. Sinai, it was a pledge
of God’s protection, and it would forever permit them familiar
access as the Chosen People. For their part, the Jewish people
were to observe the dictates of the law, summarized most succinctly here in the form of the Ten Commandments. To be in a
covenantal relationship with the Lord God requires an exclusive relationship, just as discipleship with Jesus—ritualized in
baptism—demands a total allegiance to him and none other.
Next weeks collection is designated
for Catholic Relief Services.

ST. JOSEPH DAY
On Mon., Mar. 19 we will celebrate the solemnity of St. Joseph the patron of the Universal Catholic Church and St. Joseph
Basilica and School. This solemnity occurs during our Lenten
Retreat and in our Jubilee Year. The solemn Mass will be celebrated at 6:30pm with the presence of local clergy in the intention for all those who participate in the Retreat. We will begin
a Tridium/Novena to St. Joseph on Fri. morning in our particular intentions. It has become increasingly popular across this
country for people to return to devotional practices like pilgrimages, novenas, adorations, etc. You cannot develop a personal
relationshjp with God without prayer, acts of charity and meditation and private devotions. We encourage, invite and anticipate that every parishioner will participate in this solemn concelebrated evening Mass on Mon., Mar. 19.

2012 ANNUAL PARTNERS IN CHARITY APPEAL
“Open wide the doors to Christ.” These words of Blessed
John Paul II call us to bring Jesus to the people we encounter in
our lives. We can do this through the Annual Partners in
Charity Appeal which supports 28 vital programs which comprise the charitable, educational and ministerial mission of our
Diocese. Our appeal is an opportunity to provide for the needs
of others who look to us for hope. Please review the flyers in
the bulletin and prayerfully consider how you can respond to
the appeal. It is our hope that every member of our parish community responds. We begin the Partners in Charity Appeal
next weekend, Mar. 17-18, 2012. You may use the envelope in
your packet or take one from the pew for your donation or
pledge.
I am pleased that Betty Sabaj and Carolyn Swierzbin have
once again agreed to serve as chairpersons for this appeal. This
important charitable drive is dedicated to Blessed John Paul II
who exemplified service and concern for others.
On behalf of those who will be served through this appeal,
Thank you! Blessed John Paul II, pray for us!

ACT TO PROTECT CONSCIENCE RIGHTS
It is important that we continue to keep our parishioners apprised of developments in our country as they occur and the
bishops urge us to contact our legislators to support the Respect for Rights of Conscience Act. Visit www.nchla.org to
send an email message to your elected officials. Flyers at the
entrances of our Basilica have information on how to contact
your legislators.
We refer to the ruling of the administration which overlooked
the first amendment of the Constitution of the United States
denying to the Catholics of our nation the fundamental freedom
of religious liberty. Catholics are not second class citizens. Our
parents and grandparents for all their efforts to build the cities
and towns and infrastructure of our community do not deserve
to be stripped of their God given rights. This is not only a
Catholic problem but other Protestant denominations join the
Catholic Church to stand firm in our struggle for freedom of
conscience.

celu swego życia, przylgnie do ziemi i utraci swoją godność.
