The next religious education class will be held on September
29, 2012 from 8:00 a.m to 10:00 a.m. Please be on time.
We are in need of a catechist for the
2nd grade students in our Religious
Education (CCD) program. We meet
on alternate Saturday mornings for a
two hour session. We have 35 people
in our parish who took classes last
year and are certified catechists. You
now have the opportunity to volunteer your service and put into practice what have you
learned. If you are willing to volunteer for this ministry please call the rectory at 708-652-0948 Ex. 20
and leave your name and phone number.
Classes will begin on September 15, 2012 at 8:00 A.M

Twenty-Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time, Cycle B
Mark 8:27-35
Peter declares that Jesus is the Christ, and Jesus teaches
that those who would follow him must take up his or her
cross.
Background on the Gospel Reading
Today's reading is the turning point in Mark's Gospel. In
the presentation of the life and ministry of Jesus found in
the Gospel of Mark, the deeds of Jesus have shown Jesus to
be the Son of God. Yet many, including Jesus' disciples,
have not yet realized his identity. In today's Gospel, Jesus
asks the disciples for a field report by asking what others
say about him. He then turns the question directly to the
disciples and asks what they believe. Peter speaks for all of
them when he announces that they believe Jesus to be the
Christ.
The word Christ is the Greek translation of the Hebrew
word for Messiah, which means “the anointed one.” At the
time of Jesus, the image of the Messiah was laden with
popular expectations, most of which looked for a political
leader who would free the Jewish people from Roman occupation. Jesus does not appear to have used this term for
himself. As we see in today's reading, Jesus refers to himself instead as the Son of Man, a term derived from the
Jewish Scriptures, found in the Book of Daniel and in other
apocryphal writings. Many scholars suggest that the phrase
Son of Man is best understood to mean “human being.”
Now that the disciples have acknowledged Jesus as the
Christ, Jesus confides in them the outcome of his ministry:
he will be rejected, must suffer and die, and will rise after
three days. Peter rejects this prediction, and Jesus rebukes
him severely. The image of Christ that Jesus is giving is not
the image of the Messiah that Peter was expecting. Jesus
then teaches the crowd and the disciples about the path of
discipleship: To be Christ's disciple is to follow in the way
of the cross.
We can easily miss the fear that Jesus' words must have
evoked in his disciples. Death by crucifixion was all too
familiar as a method of execution in Roman-occupied territories. It was also an omnipresent danger to the Christian
community for whom Mark wrote. The path that Jesus was
inviting his disciples to share meant tremendous suffering
and death. This is the kind of radical commitment and sacrifice that Jesus calls us to adopt for the sake of the Gospel.

CATECHETICAL SUNDAY
This Sunday is designated Catechetical Sunday, and our
theme for this year is: Catechists– Agents of the New
Evangelization. Through the ministry of catechesis,
catechists provide a process of initiation and formation
for those in their care, introducing them to the truths of
faith, which they themselves have learned, lived, and
celebrated. Our Parish catechists and helpers are: Irene

XXIV Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario
En aquel tiempo, Jesús y sus discípulos se dirigieron a
las aldeas de Cesarea de Filipo; por el camino preguntó a sus discípulos: ¿Quién dice la gente soy yo? Ellos
le contestaron: Unos, Juan Bautista: otros, Elías, y
otros, uno de los profetas. Él les preguntó: Y vosotros,
¿quién decís que soy? Pedro le contestó: Tú eres el
Mesías. Él les prohibió terminantemente decírselo a
nadie. Y empezó a instruirles: El Hijo del Hombre tiene
que padecer mucho, tiene que ser condenado por los
senadores, sumos sacerdotes y letrados, ser ejecutado y resucitar a los tres días. Se lo explicaba con toda
claridad. Entonces Pedro se le llevó aparte y se puso a
increparle. Jesús se volvió, y de cara a los discípulos
increpó a Pedro: ¡Quítate de mi vista, Satanás! ¡Tú
piensas como los hombres, no como Dios! Después
llamó a la gente y a sus discípulos y les dijo: El que
quiera venirse conmigo, que se niegue a sí mismo,
que cargue con su cruz y me siga. Mirad, el que quiera
salvar su vida, la perderá; pero el que pierda su vida
por el Evangelio, la salvará.

Estamos en la necesidad de un catequista bilingüe para los estudiantes de 2º grado en nuestro programa de Educación Religiosa
(CCD). Las clases se reúnen cada otro sábado por la mañana por
una duración de dos horas. En el principio de este verano tuvimos
un total de 35 catequistas que recibieron su certificación, y los queremos a exhortar a que aprovechen esta oportunidad para poner en
practica los conocimientos adquiridos durante su preparación. Si

Potem Jezus udał się ze swoimi uczniami do wiosek
pod Cezareą Filipową. W drodze pytał uczniów: Za
kogo uważają Mnie ludzie? Oni Mu odpowiedzieli:
Za Jana Chrzciciela, inni za Eliasza, jeszcze inni za
jednego z proroków. On ich zapytał: A wy za kogo
mnie uważacie? Odpowiedział Mu Piotr: Ty jesteś
Mesjasz. Wtedy surowo im przykazał, żeby nikomu
o Nim nie mówili. I zaczął ich pouczać, że Syn Człowieczy musi wiele cierpieć, że będzie odrzucony
przez starszych, arcykapłanów i uczonych w Piśmie;
że będzie zabity, ale po trzech dniach zmartwychwstanie. A mówił zupełnie otwarcie te słowa. Wtedy
Piotr wziął Go na bok i zaczął Go upominać. Lecz
On obrócił się i patrząc na swych uczniów, zgromił
Piotra słowami: Zejdź Mi z oczu, szatanie, bo nie
myślisz o tym, co Boże, ale o tym, co ludzkie. Potem
przywołał do siebie tłum razem ze swoimi uczniami i
rzekł im: Jeśli kto chce pójść za Mną, niech się zaprze samego siebie, niech weźmie krzyż swój i niech
Mnie naśladuje! Bo kto chce zachować swoje życie,
straci je; a kto straci swe życie z powodu Mnie i
Ewangelii, zachowa je.
