BLESSING OF WALKWAY
Through the generosity of a number of parishioners, we
have been able to make improvements to the walkway between the church and rectory. A plaque inscribed with their
names will be displayed in the walkway. This plaque will be
blessed following the 5:00PM Mass on Saturday, July 21st.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
There are many times when we say, “Tell me what I
want to hear, and don’t confuse me with facts.” And we
don’t take kindly to someone who might be bold enough
to snuff out our expectations.
The biggest problem with such an attitude is not that
we miss out on the truth or the facts, but that we miss out
on the new and surprising gifts others can give us. Like
the townspeople in today’s Gospel story, we too often
refuse to allow others to display the talents that can be
good news for us.
Today’s readings call for hospitality and faith and
discernment. Hospitality opens the doors of our hearts and
minds to the “stranger” among us, no matter how familiar
he or she may seem to be. Faith enables us to accept the
gifts of others, no matter how alarming or “strange” they
may seem to be. Discernment helps us discover the
prophets in our midst, no matter how amazing they may
seem to be. Hospitality, faith, and discernment - cultivate
these. Then, nobody can bring bad news.
The American summer is officially underway, and
people are on the move. Signs of hospitality are
everywhere. In today’s Gospel, Jesus’ visit home is
hardly marked by hospitality. He goes up to the bema, the
elevated place for solemn public reading of the Torah,
and his message is poorly received. Today, we read from
the descendant of the bema, the ambo, almost an “altar of
the Word of God.” Many ancient ambos are preserved in
Italy, decorated with marble, ivory, precious metal, and
jewels. Six hundred years ago, the pulpit came into use,
meant for preaching rather than proclamation of scripture.
Before microphone systems, pulpits were often located
halfway down the church, amid the gathered people, and
not so clearly associated with the altar.
Today, the ambo (the plural is “ambone”!) is an
expected feature of our worship spaces because the Word
is once again proclaimed to the people. Before 1964,
typically the readings were done quietly by the priest at
the altar in Latin, and optionally repeated in English from
the pulpit. With the restored place of scripture in our
worship, a beautiful and worthy ambo, related in design to
the altar table, has once again become a prominent and
familiar feature of Catholic architecture.

13 NIEDZIELA OKRESU ZWYKŁEGO
Aby zaś nie wynosił mnie zbytnio ogrom objawień,
dany mi został oścień dla ciała, wysłannik szatana, aby
mnie policzkował - żebym się nie unosił pychą. Dlatego
trzykrotnie prosiłem Pana, aby odszedł ode mnie, lecz /
Pan/ mi powiedział: Wystarczy ci mojej łaski. Moc
bowiem w słabości się doskonali. Najchętniej więc będę
się chlubił z moich słabości, aby zamieszkała we mnie
moc Chrystusa. Dlatego mam upodobanie w moich
słabościach, w obelgach, w niedostatkach, w
prześladowaniach, w uciskach z powodu Chrystusa.
Albowiem ilekroć niedomagam, tylekroć jestem mocny.
2 Kor 12,7-10
Jezus przyszedł do swego rodzinnego miasta. A
towarzyszyli Mu Jego uczniowie. Gdy nadszedł szabat,
zaczął nauczać w synagodze; a wielu, przysłuchując się,
pytało ze zdziwieniem: Skąd On to ma? I co za mądrość,
która Mu jest dana? I takie cuda dzieją się przez Jego
ręce. Czy nie jest to cieśla, syn Maryi, a brat Jakuba,
Józefa, Judy i Szymona? Czyż nie żyją tu u nas także
Jego siostry? I powątpiewali o Nim. A Jezus mówił im:
Tylko w swojej ojczyźnie, wśród swoich krewnych i w
swoim domu może być prorok tak lekceważony. I nie
mógł tam zdziałać żadnego cudu, jedynie na kilku
chorych położył ręce i uzdrowił ich. Dziwił się też ich
niedowiarstwu. Potem obchodził okoliczne wsie i
nauczał.

REFLEKSJA NAD CZYTANIAMI NIEDZIELNYMI...
Jak pokazuje św. Paweł, nawet nasze słabości
i niedomagania mogą stać się dla nas szansą. Pan Bóg
nie chce naszej u dawa nej dos konałoś ci
i nieskazitelności, ale pragnie, żebyśmy doświadczając
własnych ograniczeń, ufnie zwracali się do Niego
o pomoc. Do takich właśnie ludzi: pogubionych,
przegranych i kruchych, Bóg kieruje swoje słowo.
Bylebyśmy się tylko nie okazali „ludem buntowników”,
o zatwardziałych sercach”, głuchych na słowo Boże.

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE
En los calendarios antiguos se celebraba la memoria de
san Cristóbal el día 10 de este mes. Pero, con la reforma del
Concilio Vaticano II este pobre santo se quedó sin trabajo
sólo por el hecho de no poder comprobar su existencia.
No fue que la reforma del Concilio Vaticano II quisiera
haber negado al pobre de Cristóbal ni a tantos otros santos
que fueron quitados del Santoral Romano. Sólo buscaba
hacer lugar para nuevos santos y beatos; y menos mal,
porque eventualmente el papa Juan Pablo II canonizó y
beatificó a más de mil personas durante su pontificado.
Muchos de estos santos no son tan bien conocidos como
nuestro amigo san Cristóbal.
Aunque ya no está en el calendario eclesiástico, Cristóbal
continúa en los tableros de muchos carros ofreciendo su
servicio de protección para los automovilistas. Esta chambita
la consiguió porque ayudaba a cruzar el río a personas en
camino, hasta que un día le tocó cargar con el niño Dios. Su
nombre significa “el que carga con Cristo” y es un desafío a
todos los que llevamos el nombre de cristiano.
LECTURAS DE HOY
Primera lectura - Ezequiel es enviado como el profeta de
Yavé a los rebeldes y obstinados Israelitas
(Ezequiel 2:2-5).
Salmo - Ten piedad de nosotros, ten piedad
(Salmo 123 [122]).
Segunda lectura - Pablo reconoce sus debilidades y se
gloría de ellas, para que la fuerza de Cristo habite en él
(2 Corintios 12:7-10).
Evangelio - Jesús predica en la sinagoga de su pueblo
natal, dejando a los habitantes atónitos. (Marcos 6:1-6).
NO MALAS NOTICIAS
Hay muchas veces cuando decimos: “Dime lo que
quiero escuchar, y no me confundas con datos”. Y no
vemos con buenos ojos a alguien que podría ser lo
suficientemente audaz y acabe con nuestras expectativas.
El mayor problema con esa actitud no es que nos
perdemos la verdad o los hechos, sino que nos perdemos
los regalos nuevos y sorprendentes que otros nos pueden
dar. Al igual que la gente del pueblo en el relato del
Evangelio de hoy, nosotros también a menudo nos
negamos a permitir que otros muestren los talentos que
pueden ser una buena noticia para nosotros.
Las lecturas de hoy piden hospitalidad, fe y
discernimiento. La hospitalidad abre las puertas de
nuestro corazón y nuestras mentes a los “forasteros” entre
nosotros, no importa lo familiar que él o ella puede
parecer. La fe nos permite aceptar los dones de los demás,
no importa cuán alarmante o “extraños” nos puedan
parecer. El discernimiento nos ayuda a descubrir a los
profetas entre nosotros, no importa lo increíbles que
puedan parecer. Hospitalidad, fe y discernimiento –
cultívalos. Así, nadie podrá traerte malas noticias.
