Today’s readings contain a striking contrast between the wrath of God in the Old Testament and the tenderness and mercy of Jesus towards sinners in the New. In the first reading, God says to Moses “Let me alone that my wrath may blaze up against them to consume them”. It was only after Moses’ pleading that “God relented in the punishment he had threatened to inflict on his people”. The Gospel presents us with two parables illustrating Jesus’ desire to reconcile sinners, the lost sheep and the lost coin. If the long version of the Gospel is read, we will also hear the parable of the Prodigal Son. What more tender story do we have to illustrate God’s desire for sinners to return to him? The transition between these two faces of God is given to us in the second reading. “Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners”. We are all sinners, but Christ has given us the wonderful sacrament of Confession to keep us close to him. In this parish, an amazing thing happens. So many people await the sacrament of Confession that the priest has a difficult time getting to the 5:00 PM Mass. One Saturday afternoon, some had to be asked to return after the Mass. If you have not frequented the Sacrament of Penance in a long time, it is vital to your eternal salvation that you do so. None of those souls who died on 9/11 expected to die that day. It is very wise to be ready to meet God at any moment of any day. Your eternal salvation depends on it. Forever is a long, long time! Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults
The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults is the process
for 1) those Non-Christians who are 18 years of age or
older considering the possibility of becoming Roman
Catholic; 2) for those 18 years of age or older, of other
Christian faiths considering the possibility of
embracing the Roman Catholic Church; 3) for baptized
Roman Catholics 18 years of age or older who have
not received either the sacrament of the Eucharist or
Confirmation - or both.
Time: 2 hours on Sunday afternoon which will include
Mass and class. Classes will begin in late October and
will be held either from 12noon until 2pm or 1pm until
3pm. If you have a friend or family member who
would be interested, please contact Deacon Mike or
Deacon Phil at the rectory. An interview must be
conducted before classes begin.
OPEN THE DOOR OF FAITH
Catechetical Sunday 2013
This year, the Church will celebrate Catechetical
Sunday on September 15, 2013, and will focus
on the theme "Open the Door of Faith."
Catechetical Sunday is a wonderful opportunity
to reflect on the role that each person plays, by
virtue of Baptism, in handing on the faith and
being a witness to the Gospel. Catechetical
Sunday is an opportunity for all to rededicate
themselves to this mission as a community of
faith.

OUTREACH PROGRAM
A couple of weeks ago, a Mother brought her young son
to the Outreach with a food donation. Cute, right? We
were happy to see that she was teaching him to give
to the poor; it doesn’t end there. It turned out that this
child received some money when he made his First Holy
Communion and wanted to spend some of it on food for
the hungry people in the parish. Obviously, his parents
nurtured this child from infancy and encouraged this
type of mindset. Not only do the parents and child
prosper but, once again, the Copiague Family has
another child to show off. Thank you, Anthony.
We thank you for your generous donation of book bags
and toiletries over the past couple of weeks; however,
we are back to asking for food this week. With the kids
back to school and the teachers stressing “healthy”
snacks, we are asking for just that. Suggestions are:
non-refrigerated jello and pudding cups, fruit cups,
small juice boxes, peanut butter crackers, nuts, fruit
roll-ups and anything else you can find and afford to
give.

Niedziela Katechetyczna 2013
W tym roku Kościół obchodzi Niedzielę Katechetyczną 15
września i koncentruje się wokół tematu: “Otwarcia drzwi
wiary”. Niedziela Katechetyczna jest znakomitą okazją do
zastanowienia się nad rolą, jaką odgrywa każdy człowiek
odrodzony przez chrzest, w kierowaniu się zasadami
wiary i dawaniu świadectwa Ewangelii. Niedziela
Katechetyczna jest dla wszystkich okazją do ponownego
poświęcenia się tej misji jako wspólnota wiary.
PROGRAM POMOCY SOCJALNEJ - Dziękujemy Państwu
za hojne donacje w postaci toreb wypełnionych książkami
oraz przyborami toaletowymi, które otrzymywaliśmy
poprzez ostatnie dwa tygodnie. W tym tygodniu prosimy o
zdrową żywność (desery) dla dzieci powracających do
szkoły, tj. np. galaretkę (jello) oraz pudding w kubkach niewymagające przechowywania w lodówce, sok w małych

Obrzęd chrześcijańskiego wtajemniczenia dorosłych jest
procesem dla: 1) osób nie będących chrześcijanami w
wieku lat 18 lub powyżej, rozważających możliwość
przystąpienia do Kościoła Rzymskokatolickiego, 2)
chrześcijan innych wyznań w wieku lat 18 lub powyżej,
rozważających możli- wość przystąpienia do Kościoła
Rzymskokatolickiego, 3) ochrzczonych członków Kościoła
Rzymskokatolickiego w wieku lat 18 lub powyżej, którzy nie
otrzymałi sakramentu Eucharystii lub Bierzmowania - lub
obu sakramentów.
Czas: dwie godziny w niedzielne popołudnia, które obejmą
Mszę św. oraz zajęcia. Zajęcia rozpoczną się pod koniec
października i będą odbywały się w godz: 12:00- 14:00 lub
13:00-15:00. Jeżeli ktoś z Państwa przyjaciół lub członków
rodzin byłby zainteresowany, to prosimy o skontaktowanie
się z Diakonem Mike’m lub Diakonem Philem w kancelarii
parafialnej. Przed rozpoczęciem zajęć należy umówić się
na rozmowę (interview).

“The Return of the Seventy‐two” The two months have flown by since we heard the Gospel reading of the seventy‐two disciples whom Jesus sent out to spread the kingdom of God. At that time some of us accepted the challenge to see ourselves as one of the seventy‐two, and to see if we could each find a way to do the same. “The seventy‐two returned rejoicing” . . . The following is a short summary of some of what has taken place. A caring e‐mail caused an estranged relative to consider returning to Confession and the Church. A letter to a Godchild, explaining the wondrous gift we have in the Eucharist, caused the Godchild’s mother to reconsider her relationship with the Church. Through a mother’s prayers and advice, a daughter is reconsidering a poor choice she was making. Many strangers were touched by the kindness of Christ. A harried supermarket customer was so happy that one of us let her go ahead in line, that she forced money on the generous shopper. The shopper used the money to purchase supplies for Outreach. Another young mother who was new to Copiague asked her way around IGA. A parishioner who had a bulletin in her car returned to the store and gave it to the woman, hoping she would register her child for religious instruction. A family touched by serious illness explained how they have for many years been strengthened through the intercession of Mary. They continue asking for God’s healing through the Sacraments, especially the Eucharist. Another parishioner attended an out of the country family wedding, and was the only Catholic at the ceremony. She represented the Catholic Church just by her presence. And it is a truly impressing event to see Eucharistic ministers leaving Church and bringing Holy Communion through the streets of Copiague to those who are homebound. We also have had prayers and encouragement from the retired sisters at Amityville. One sister spends her days teaching English to Spanish speaking women to enable them to relate better to their school age children and to the world around them. Now that summer is over, it would be a wonderful thing if everyone continued to bring Christ to Copiague. Many of us know that IGA is a great meeting place for parishioners, especially after Mass, both daily and on the weekend. Wouldn’t it be a wonderful thing if we all radiated such joy, happiness, and friendship as we came from Church that others were attracted to the source of our joy! Copiague’s IGA would soon be known as the friendliest supermarket on Long Island. How about we give it a try!
