PERSISTENT PRAYER
To the best of our knowledge, the authors of
the New Testament did not spend much time in
each other’s company following the Resurrection. They took their charge to go to the nations and spread the Good News seriously.
Paul and Luke are an exception to this, having travelled together on missionary journeys. It is no accident, then, that perseverance in prayer is a favorite theme of both authors. Luke’s
Gospel (which speaks most frequently about Jesus’ own
prayer), Acts and the Pauline Letters all exhort us to unceasing
prayer.
Paul’s personality was certainly tenacious; he most likely
would have admired the persistent widow in today’s Gospel
passage. The purpose of these passages is not to make us
think—as infants and toddlers do—that is we keep asking or
yelling or crying we will eventually get our way. No, the point
is that when true disciples believe in something, we will persist
in following that belief whether it is convenient or not, even
when we come up against seemingly insurmountable obstacles.

NOVENA AND VOTIVE MASS TO SAINT JOSEPH
It is a pious custom often followed by Catholics to write a petition to
St. Joseph and place it before his image. The Little Sisters of the Poor
who take care of the elderly poor received many favors after placing
their petitions before St. Joseph’s statue. This could be an opportu-
nity for us to receive needed favors.
You are invited to join us on Wednesday, Oct. 23 at 7:00pm for
Devotions and Mass. Members of the Basilica’s Lector’s minis-
try will carry the statue of St. Joseph from Our Lady of Czestochowa Chapel to the sanctuary before Mass.
As always we are grateful for the graces requested through
the intercession of St. Joseph and the offerings you place in the
petition box.
REMINDER: Our Annual Cemetery Procession will take
place on Sunday, October 27th at 2:00pm. This is a special day
to remember our deceased loved ones. Guided by the spirit of
love for our departed relatives and friends we ask all parishioners to notify their out-of-town relatives and friends to join us for
this traditional prayer service.
For your convenience an assortment of votive candles will
be available after Masses on Saturday, October 19th & Sunday,
October 20 at the front entrance to the Basilica and also on
Sun., Oct. 27th at the cemetery. These candles should be
placed at the cemetery on your family gravesite. Many candles
on the same grave is a sign of family unity and caring. The
memory of the departed should motivate each one of us to place
a candle as a sign of remembrance and prayer.
Across the world people are gathering at cemeteries on All
Saints Day afternoon for a prayer service in countries where it
is a national holiday. Other countries designate a particular day
around that time in the spirit of remembrance, love and prayer
to participate in a devotional service.
ALL SOULS DAY
On All Souls Day we observe a special day of remembrance
for our deceased loved ones. On November 2nd every priest
has the privilege to say three Masses—one for the intention of
the Holy Father, second for all the souls in purgatory and the
third in a particular intention. The most important prayer for
those who are on the other side of life is the Eucharistic sacrifice. For souls in purgatory, Nov. 2nd is like Christmas for the
living. They cannot help themselves but our prayers, acts of
charity on their behalf and above all the Mass offered for them
is of great importance and our sacred duty.
During the general intercessions we will read the names of
your loved ones that you submitted on the envelopes called
“wypominki”. The Masses will begin at 6:30am. Also during
the year we offer many Masses for the souls you recommended
to prayers of the Church in your wypominki envelopes.
Please print your names legibly on the envelopes included in
your monthly packet.
MEETINGS
Sacred Heart Society - Executive Board will meet on Sunday, Oct. 20th in the cafeteria after the 8:15am Mass.
Home School Association - will meet on Tues., Oct. 22nd in
the cafeteria at 6:30pm.
DIOCESAN FACULTY RECOGNITION
On Friday, Oct. 11 the Diocese of Worcester School System
held a Religious Enrichment Day for several hundred employees including teachers, principals and staff at Holy Name High
School. The day began with Mass celebrated by Bishop
McManus and included an awards program highlighting four
Worcester Diocesesan teachers who studied diligently and have
taken many challenging religious education course to become
Master Catechists over this past year.
Of the four award winners, three are presently teaching at St.
Joseph School. We are very proud of our three recipients; Lisa
Boguszewski (Gr. 1), Nancy Bush, (Gr. 2); and Denise Gionet
(Gr. 5). Congratulations to these dedicated educators!
KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS
The Knights of Columbus #12980 are pleased to announce
that Veronica Weeks was the winner of $800 from the September 50/50 drawing. Congratulations to Veronica and thank you
to parishioners and friends who supported this fundraiser.
Also, The Knights of Columbus annual Turkey Drive to help
those in need will be held during the weekend of Nov., 9 &
10th. We ask our parishioners to consider helping our less
fortunate as they have in the past.

ST. JOSEPH POLISH WOMEN’S CLUB
St. Joseph Polish Women’s Club welcomed Nancy Albysalh,

HOLY ROSARY SODALITY
On Oct. 18 we began the Nine-Day Novena to the Blessed
Mother of the Rosary. We encourage everyone, especially

LOTTERY SCRATCH TICKET RAFFLE
To promote our Lottery Scratch Ticket Raffle the Parish
Council will be mailing raffle tickets to our parishioners. A
letter and flyer will be included with the details mentioned in
last week's bulletin. The purchase of these tickets will insure the
success of this fundraiser. We are sincerely grateful for your
positive response to our fundraisers in the past and we have
faith that through your generous support we will once again be
blessed with a successful raffle.

There is still time to order a copy of our 125th Anniversary
Book at a cost of $30 using order forms at the entrances of the
Basilica. If you have pre-ordered your copy, you may remit
your payment to the rectory.
This special edition describes events and activities in which
many of us have participated in the past. This should be a “must
have” addition for every family.
PILGRIMAGE TO POLAND
An orientation program for all interested in the 125th
Anniversary Pilgrimage to Poland, scheduled for June 24-July
5, 2014 will be held on Tuesday, October 29th at 7:00pm in the

Commission for Women it will feature keynote speakers ValLimar Jansen, and Teresa Tomeo. Workshop sessions will provide additional opportunities to expand spiritual awareness and

Blessed John Paul II Parish Bazaar - to be held on Sun.,

DWUDZIESTA DZIEWIĄTA NIEDZIELA ZWYKŁA

"Wznoszę swe oczy ku górom: Skądże nadejdzie mi pomoc? Pomoc mi
przyjdzie od Pana, co stworzył niebo i ziemię." (Ps 121 1-2)
Na kartach Pięcioksięgu widać, jaką ochroną
cieszyły się wdowy w starożytnym Izraelu. Nie miały
oparcia, dlatego potrzebowały opieki od innych.
Wdowa z dzisiejszej Jezusowej przypowieści
naprzykrza się sędziemu, gdyż potrzebuje obrony.
Sama nie da sobie rady. I to jest sedno naszej relacji
z Bogiem: sami nie damy rady. Dlatego mamy Go
prosić, wołać do Niego, niekiedy krzyczeć. Bo jesteśmy jak ta wdowa
– aby żyć naprawdę, potrzebujemy Bożej łaski i obrony. Najpierw
jednak musimy się do tej potrzeby przyznać. Stanięcie w prawdzie
o naszej kruchości i niesamowystarczalności otwiera drogę ku
odnowie całego naszego życia.

WYPRZEDAŻ WYPIEKÓW
St. Ann Society organizuje wyprzedaż pieczywa w sobotę 19
października w godz. od 15:00 do 17:30 oraz w niedzielę od

UROCZYSTOŚĆ WSZYSTKICH ŚWIĘTYCH
Jak co roku z okazji Uroczystości Wszystkich Świętych
odbędzie się uroczysta Procesja. Wszystkich zapraszamy do
wspólnej modlitwy w niedzielę 27 października o godz. 14:00
na nasz parafialny cmentarz. Prosimy aby wszystkie
organizacje parafialne o udział w tej uroczystej procesji.
Kwiaty i znicze umieszczane na grobach naszych bliskich są
wyrazem naszej wiary i miłości dla tych, którzy już odeszli.
Znicze będzie można nabyć już w weekend 19 i 20
października przy wejściu do bazyliki. Ci, którzy mają swoich
bliskich zmarłych w innych miastach lub za granicą, będą
mogli zapalić znicz przy krzyżu na cmentarzu. Niech nasza
obecność, modlitwa i symbol światła będą świadectwem naszej
stałej pamięci.
Wypominki to bardzo ważny element naszej duchowej
łączności ze zmarłymi. Świadomość tego, że wszyscy na tym
świecie ulegamy słabościom każe nam również pamiętać o
duszach zmarłych, które odbywają czasowa karę w czyśćcu.
Dlatego też tuż po Uroczystości Wszystkich Świętych
obchodzimy tzw. Dzień Zaduszny, kiedy to modlimy się za
wszystkich zmarłych prosząc Boga o miłosierdzie nad nimi.
Tradycyjną formą tej modlitwy są „Wypominki”. Prosimy o
przekazywanie imion zmarłych, za których będziemy się
modlić w czasie specjalnych Mszy w Dzień Zaduszny, jak
również podczas Mszy w ciągu całego roku.

RYCERZE KOLUMBA
Organizowana co roku akcja wsparcia potrzebujących
przeprowadzana z okazji Święta Dziękczynienia przez Rycerzy
Kolumba odbędzie się w weekend 9 i 10 listopada. Prosimy
naszych parafian o pomoc dla tych, którzy potrzebują wsparcia.

RELIGIA
Zajęcia katechetyczne odbywają się w każdy poniedziałek,
od 17:30 do 16:30.
Bierzmowanie - Najbliższa spotkanie odbędzie się w
niedzielę, 20 października o godz. 8:30. Wszyscy, którzy chcą
w tym roku przystąpić do Sakramentu Bierzmowania, bez
względu na to, czy uczęszczają do szkoły publicznej czy
prywatnej, muszą uczestniczyć w tych zajęciach.
ZNACZENIE NIEDZIELNEJ MSZY ŚW.
Niedziela jest dniem zmartwychwstania, to nie tylko pamiątka
wydarzenia, ale także jako świętowanie żywej obecności
Zmartwychwstałego pośród wierzących. Jednakże aby
właściwie przeżywać obecność Chrystusa ważnym jest by
gromadząc się wyrażali w pełni tożsamość z Kościołem.
Ponadto powinny stać się one „jednym” w Chrystusie. Ta
jedność staje się widoczna, wtedy gdy chrześcijanie gromadzą
się we wspólnocie.
Rzeczywistość życia Kościoła znajduje swój wyraz

Kościół. Dzięki tej żywotnej więzi z Sakramentem Ciała i Krwi
Pańskiej właśnie w Eucharystii można tę tajemnicę Kościoła
najdoskonalej głosić, doświadczać i przeżywać. Istota
Eucharystii urzeczywistnia się za każdym razem, gdy jest ona
odprawiana. Jednakże znamienne jest stwierdzenie Katechizmu
Kościoła Katolickiego, że „niedzielna celebracja dnia
Pańskiego i Eucharystii stanowi centrum życia Kościoła.
Bowiem podczas niedzielnej Mszy św. Chrześcijanie
szczególnie mocno przeżywają to, czego doświadczyli
apostołowie wieczorem w dniu Paschy.
Eucharystia niedzielna nie różni się znaczeniowo od Mszy
św. odprawianych w dzień powszechny. Niemniej Eucharystia
niedzielna, która wiąże się z obowiązkiem uczestnictwa całej
wspólnoty i odznacza szczególnie uroczystym charakterem,
właśnie dlatego, że jest sprawowana w „dniu, w którym
Chrystus zwyciężył śmierć i dał nam udział w życiu
wiecznym.” Każda wspólnota gromadząca wszystkich swoich
członków na „łamaniu chleba” uświadamia sobie, że w ich
obecności urzeczywistnia się największa misterium Kościoła.
Pośród różnych form działalności parafii „żadna nie ma tak
żywotnego znaczenia i tak silnego wpływu na wspólnotę, jak
niedzielna celebracja dnia Pańskiego połączona z Eucharystią.”
Z tą właśnie myślą Sobór przypomniał, że należy rozwijać
„poczucie wspólnoty parafialnej, zwłaszcza w zbiorowym
odprawianiu niedzielnych Mszy św.” W tym samym kierunku
zmierzają także późniejsze instrukcje dotyczące liturgii,
skoordynowane z celebracją sprawowaną w kościele
parafialnym, a to właśnie po to by „rozwijać poczucie
przynależności do kościelnej wspólnoty, które umacnia się i
wyraża w szczególny sposób przez wspólnotowe świętowanie
niedzieli, zarówno w obecności biskupa, zwłaszcza w katedrze,
jak i w zgromadzeniu parafialnym, którego pasterz zastępuje
biskupa.” Oczywiście naturalnym jest, że podczas niedzielnej
Mszy św. sprawowanych w parafii spotykają się różne grupy,
ruchy, stowarzyszenia, a także małe wspólnoty zakonne
istniejące na jej terenie.
