Stewardship Note: “Has none but this foreigner returned to
give thanks to God?” Most of us live “easy” lives. We have
food, shelter and clothing. We go on vacation every year and
own a car or two. Most of us take this all for granted. Did you
ever notice that people with the least amount of possessions are
usually the most grateful? Shouldn’t this be the other way
around? Take time every day and thank God for all He has
given you.
TWENTY-EIGHTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

If we have died with [Christ Jesus] we shall also live with
him; if we persevere we shall also reign with him.
GRATITUDE
Surely we can all recall at least a few days
in our lives when things were going so well
that nothing could put us in a bad mood.
Maybe it was the day a very special person
asked us to the senior prom, or perhaps it
was our wedding day. Maybe it was the day
we learned that we were expecting a longawaited child, or the day we got an overdue promotion. There
was elation in our hearts and lightness in our step, an
extraordinary vitality throughout the day. We probably got on
the phone right away to tell at least a few key people about our
good fortune.
This is surely how Naaman and the leper must have felt
when they were rid of their terrible diseases. They were hardpressed to contain their gratitude, and although they were both
unfamiliar with the customs of a foreign land, they had the
good manners to thank the people responsible for their cures.
The second collection this week
is for our Parish Obligations to the Diocese.
Next weekend’s collection is designated for the Catholic
League for Religious Assistance (Liga Katolicka).
KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS
We welcome the Knights of Columbus #12980 to the 4:00pm
Liturgy on Saturday, Oct. 8th as they install their slate of officers. Dinner for members will be served in the school cafeteria
following Mass.
Columbus Day - is a public holiday in the United States
which commemorates the voyage of Christopher Columbus to
the Americas in 1492. We will observe this event on Mon.,
Oct. 10th and St. Joseph School and the rectory will be closed
for this national holiday.
Please join us Monday-through Friday at 7:00pm for Rosary Devotions and after Sunday 11:00am Mass.
SPECIAL REMEMBRANCES
On Tuesday. Oct. 11th we prayerfully recognize the Elevation of St. Joseph Church to the status of Basilica by Pope John
Paul II in October of 1998.
On Sunday, October 16th we will observe the anniversary
of Pope John Paul II’s election to the Chair of St. Peter.

MUSICAL MINISTRY
Our organist, Robert Wójcik informed me that after a prayerful reflection and personal priorities he has resigned as organist at St.
Joseph Basilica and will return to his family in Poland. Although we are disappointed with his news, we must respect his decision.
We are grateful for his many years of service to St. Joseph Basilica and St. Joseph School. We wish him many blessings of God in
his professional career.
The position of Director of Music at St. Joseph Basilica is of great importance and we are beginning a search for an organist.
Jubilee Year of Mercy
This weekend, of the Jubilee Year we honor Mary under the
title “Mother of Mercy,” as suggested by Pope Francis. Recall
the Good Samaritan Gospel. Priest and Levite saw suffering but
showed no mercy. Recall the rich man, who never saw Lazarus
right before his eyes, and showed no mercy. Today, Jesus sees
ten lepers from afar and shows extraordinary mercy. Mary’s
entire life, declares Francis, was modeled on Jesus, “Mercy-Made
-Flesh.” Indeed, standing at the cross, Mary saw Jesus’ mercy
take flesh when Jesus showed mercy to the executioners. So Pope
Francis recommends we frequently pray the Salve Regina, Hail,
Holy Queen, asking her to ever look upon us with mercy, so that
we might be worthy to gaze upon the face of her merciful Son
Jesus. May we do so not only in eternity, but here and now,
opening our eyes to see Jesus in others, and our hearts to serve
Jesus in others by loving deeds of unconditional mercy.

OF JOHN PAUL II FOUNDATION
Last Saturday, October 1st, the Washington, DC Chapter
honored Msgr. Anthony Czarnecki at their annual Wadowice-onthe Potomac Banquet.
Each year the Friends of JPII select a prominent person who
promoted the legacy of our beloved late Pope John Paul II
through his teachings and pastoral works.
President Bozenna Buda presented Msgr. with a customdesigned, lighted-crystal image of himself with Pope John Paul II
and the Vatican Flag.
Congratulations to Msgr. Czarnecki for this well deserved
recognition!
PROMOTING CATHOLIC CULTURE IN
CATHOLIC SCHOOLS
Catholic Schools have many things in common. They are all
concerned with educational excellence and formation of character. Whenever you visit any given Catholic School for the first
time you quickly gain a global impression of the school’s overall
culture through the symbols such as the honor board, decorations,
the courtesy of welcome, behavior of the students and greetings
of the staff. Behind all of this lies a shared set of organizing principles called culture. In other words, it is a peculiar and distinctive way of life of the students which defines meaning, reinforced
values and ideas embodied in a given school, in social relations,
in a system of beliefs and shared customs.
What are the benefits of all of the above? Culture defines how
people act, fosters the truth, promotes freedom, encourages predictability and provides stability in the everyday world. Culture
enables students to feel better about what they do, so they are
likely to work more effectively. By communicating a sense of
belonging, culture gives enriched meaning and purpose to one’s
daily activities. When you walk through the halls of St. Joseph
School you not only see, but you feel, the Catholic Culture which
is a major part of the educational goal of this educational institution.
NOVENA AND DEVOTION TO ST. JOSEPH
On Wednesday, October 12th we invite parishioners and
friends to participate in our weekly devotion to our Patron.
Through your written petitions you have the opportunity to
ask St. Joseph to pray for us and help us to overcome evil, do
good and imitate him by being obedient and compassionate.

Lady of Czestochowa Chapel to be read during the Novena.
Your offerings are appreciated.
Members of the Parish Council will bring our Patron’s
statue into the sanctuary.
CANDLELIGHT PROCESSION
On Thursday, October 13th, we will pray the rosary in an
outdoor procession concluding the six-month devotion in
honor or Our Lady of Fatima. We kindly request parishioners, members or our organizations and ministries and especially the Children of Mary and Altar Servers to participate
and pray to Our Lady for needed graces.

ST. JOSEPH GARDEN OF PEACE
As temperatures dip and leaves begin to fall from trees our
thoughts turn to our loved ones who are interred at our cemetery.
We ask that you kindly remove faded decorations, flowers,
pots, clutter, etc. from your family lot by October 23rd. Remaining items will be discarded by cemetery personnel.
There are numerous lots with overgrown and untrimmed
shrubs and trees which on some lots cover the entire monument. We kindly ask family members to cut these bushes,
otherwise they will by uprooted by staff.
With your cooperation St. Joseph Garden of Peace will be
neat, tidy, well-groomed sacred grounds to welcome our visitors for the Annual Cemetery Procession to be held on Sunday, October 30th at 2:00pm. Votive lights are available in
the sacristy and also at the cemetery on the day of the procession.
Reminder: To have a lot at the cemetery for your final
resting place is a natural concern for every human being. Following tradition, we offer a significant discount on lots during
the months of October and November. We offer single grave
lots at a 10% discount and multiple lots at a 15% discount. If

“Jeżeliśmy bowiem z Nim współumarli, wespół z Nim i żyć będziemy. Jeśli
trwamy w cierpliwości, wespół z Nim też królować będziemy.” (2 Tym 2, 11-12a)
Syryjczyk Naaman i dziesięciu trędowatych na
pograniczu Samarii i Galilei – wszyscy oni zostali
uwolnieni od swojej choroby, która czyniła ich
nieczystymi w oczach ludzi. Trąd, którym byli
zarażeni, dotknął nie tylko ich ciał, lecz także dusz.
Człowiek jest całością, dlatego współcierpi w nim
wszystko. Trąd duszy to grzech niewiary w to, że
Bóg kocha, że może oczyścić. To przekonanie, że
moje grzechy nie zostaną zapomniane. To danie wiary podszeptom
złego, który zapewnia: Niechybnie umrzesz z powodu swej nieczystości.
Jezus mówi co innego: „Twoja wiara cię ocaliła”. Uwierz, zaufaj,
powierz się, aby wzrosło w tobie przekonanie, że jestem Bogiem, który
nie zachowuje pamięci o grzechach i dochowuje wierności.

W najbliższy poniedziałek w całych Stanach Zjednoczonych
będziemy wspominali przybycie Krzysztofa Kolumba do Ameryki w
1592 r. Jest to święto ogólnonarodowe. W związku z jego obchodami
zarówno Szkoła św. Józefa jak i biuro parafialne będą zamknięte.

PODZIĘKOWANIE
Z wielkim smutkiem informujemy, że nasz organista Robert Wójcik, po długiej refleksji i modlitwie, w związku ze swoja sytuacją rodzinną,
postanowił zrezygnować z posługi w naszej wspólnocie i powrócić do swoich bliskich w Polsce.
Dziękujemy mu za niezmordowaną posługę dla nas wszystkich. Za dzielenie się swoim talentem, za piękno muzyki i śpiewów oraz za dobroć,
której doświadczaliśmy na co dzień. Rozstając się po długich i wielce owocnych latach pracy w parafii i w szkole, życzymy mu Bożego
błogosławieństwa zarówno wżyciu osobistym jak i zawodowym. Jednocześnie zapewniamy o pamięci w naszych modlitwach.
PACC
Specjalne spotkanie członków Klubu odbędzie się w niedzielę,
9 października o godz. 13:00 w Klubie. Bardzo serdecznie
zapraszamy do dyskusji na temat bieżących spraw, które dotyczą
między innymi funkcjonowania, a w konsekwencji również
przetrwania Klubu.
NABOŻEŃSTWO FATIMSKIE
W czwartek, 13 października, będziemy modlić się na różańcu
w czasie ostatniego już w tym roku nabożeństwa ku czci lub Matki
Bożej Fatimskiej. Uprzejmie zapraszamy do udziału parafian,
członków organizacji iarafialnych, a zwłaszcza Dzieci Maryi
i ministrantów.
JUBILEUSZOWY ROK MIŁOSIERDZIA
W ten weekend, z okazji Jubileuszu, czcimy Maryję pod tytułem
proponowanym przez papieża Franciszka: "Matka Miłosierdzia."
Ewangelia przypomina przypowieść o dobrym Samarytanie. Kapłan
i Lewita widzieli cierpienia, ale nie okazali miłosierdzia.
Przypomnijmy sobie bogatego człowieka, który nigdy nie zauważał
Łazarza leżącego u progu jego domu, i nie okazywał mu
miłosierdzia. Dzisiaj Jezus zauważa dziesięciu trędowatych już
z daleka i okazuje im niezwykłą łaskę.
Całe życie Maryi, mówi papież Franciszek, było wzorowany na
Jezusowym, "Miłosierdzie stało się ciałem". Rzeczywiście, stojąc
pod krzyżem Maryja zobaczył miłosierdzie Jezusa w działaniu, kiedy
przebaczył swoim oprawcom. W związku z tym papież zachęca do
częstszego odmawiania modlitwy „Salve Regina” prosząc, żeby
zawsze spoglądała na nas z miłosierdziem, abyśmy mogli być
godnymi patrzeć na miłosierne oblicze jej Syna Jezusa. Możemy to
zrobić nie tylko w wieczności, ale tu i teraz, otwierając nasze oczy
by ujrzeć Jezusa w innych, a nasze serca, by służyć Jezusowi poprzez
uczynki bezwarunkowego miłosierdzie.
LIGA KATOLICKA POMOCY RELIGIJNEJ
POLSCE I POLONII
Ofiara złożona 15 16 października będzie przeznaczona na:
- Stypendia dla polskich księży i Polsko-Amerykańskich studentów;
- Misyjne dzieła polskich zakonników na całym świecie;
- Pomoc charytatywną dla parafii i instytucji katolickich w Polsce;
- Programy formacyjne dla liderów świeckich posługujących dla
Polonii w USA.
Specjalne koperty na te zbiórkę znajdują się w ławkach.
FUNDACJA PRZYJACIÓŁ JANA PAWŁA II
W minioną sobotę, 1 października, Kapituła Fundacji
w Waszyngtonie uhonorowała ks. Prałata Antoniego Czarneckiego
na dorocznym bankiecie: Wadowice-on-the Potomac.
Każdego roku Fundacja Przyjaciół JP II wybiera wybitną osobę,
która promuje naszego ukochanego Papieża Jan Paweł II przykładem
życia, nauczaniem i pracą duszpasterską.
Pani Prezydent Fundacji, Bożena Buda wręczyła ks. Prałatowi
pamiątkowy kryształ z podświetlonym wizerunkiem ks. Prałata
i św. Jana Pawła II na tle flagi watykańskiej.
Gratulujemy księdzu Prałatowi otrzymania zasłużonego
odznaczenia.
ŚWIĘTOWAĆ KAPŁAŃSTWO
Zapraszamy do udziału w dorocznym spotkaniu, które odbędzie się
w czwartek, 13 października w godzinach od 17:30 do 19:30
w szpitalu St. Vincent. W tym roku uczestnicy spotykają się pod
hasłem: „Taste of the Diocese”.
Jest to doskonała okazja do okazania wsparcia kapłanom, którzy
przez lata troszczą się o nasz rozwój duchowy.
Przy wejściach do Bazyliki można znaleźć foldery ze
szczegółowymi informacjami.
NOWENNA DO ŚW. JÓZEFA
W środę, 12 października zapraszamy parafian i przyjaciół do
udziału w cotygodniowym nabożeństwie do naszego św. Patrona.
Poprzez modlitwy prezentowane w czasie Nowenny każdy ma
możliwość poproszenia św. Józefa, aby modlił się za nas i pomagał
nam przezwyciężyć zło, czynić dobro i naśladować go poprzez bycie
posłusznym i współczującym.
Intencje modlitewne prosimy zapisywać na kartkach znajdujących
się w kaplicy Matki Bożej. W procesji z figurą św. Józefa pójdą
Członkowie Rady Parafialnej.
CMENTARZ
Wraz z nieuchronnie nadciągająca jesienią, coraz niższymi
temperaturami i zmieniającymi swe kolory liśćmi, również i nasze
myśli kierują się do jesieni życia, a we wspomnieniach wracają ci,
którzy już odeszli do wieczności. Za kilka tygodni spotkamy się na
uroczystej procesji ku czci Wszystkich Świętych. Prosimy, aby zanim
to nastąpi, o usunięcie letnich, podniszczonych dekoracji, kwiatów
i wazonów z grobów swoich bliskich. Prace te prosimy wykonać
przed 23 października.
Przy wielu nagrobkach rosną mocno przerośnięte krzewy i drzewka.
Przypominamy, że dekoracja w jakiejkolwiek postaci nie powinna
zajmować więcej miejsca niż stopę od pomnika. Bardzo prosimy, aby
zbyt wielkie rośliny poprzycinać. W innym przypadku będą one
wycinane i usuwane przy okazji prac na cmentarzu.
Przypomnienie: Zgodnie z tradycją, w październiku i listopadzie
oferujemy znaczące zniżki na miejsca na cmentarzu: miejsce dla jednej
osoby 10% zniżki, miejsce dla wielu osób 15% zniżki. Osoby
zainteresowane prosimy o kontakt z biurem parafialnym,

Dziecięca Grupa Taneczna PIAST po wakacyjnej przerwie wznawia
swoją działalnosć. Chętnych do udziału zajęciach zapraszamy w każdy
wtorek o godz. 17:30 do Szkoły sw. Józefa.
RELIGIA
Katecheza – W związku z obchodami Columbus Day
w poniedziałek, 10 października zajęcia katechetyczne są odwołane.
Bierzmowanie – Pierwsze spotkanie z kandydatami
Bierzmowania w poniedziałek, 17 października w szkole.

UWAGA! W roku roku katechetycznym postanowiliśmy zmienić
nieco formę przygotowania do Sakramentu Bierzmowania. Spotkania
przygotowawcze będą odbywały się w wyznaczone poniedziałki
w szkole. W SPOTKANIACH PRZYGOTOWAWCZYCH BĘDĄ
BRAĆ UDZIAŁ ZARÓWNO UCZNIOWIE KLASY 11 JAK I
KLASY 10. Uczniowie klasy 10 będą uczęszczać na normalne zajęcia
katechetyczne w poniedziałki, a w wyznaczonym czasie, razem
z kandydatami z kasy 11, będą uczestniczyć w przygotowaniu
do Bierzmowania i na wiosnę wspólnie przystąpią do tego
Sakramentu.
