Elżbieta Muskat-Tabakowska, professor emeritus at the Jagiellonian University of Kraków, founder and head of the UNESCO Chair for Translation Studies and Intercultural Communication at the Jagiellonian University in the years 2002-2012. Her research focuses on Cognitive Linguistics and Translation Studies. She is a practising interpreter and translator, specializing in historical narrative. She has authored numerous published translations, including monumental books by the British historian Norman Davies (among them God’s Playground: A History of Poland;, The Isles: A History; Rising ‘44: The Battle for Warsaw and Europe at War 1939-1945: No Simple Victory). Professor Tabakowska’s own publications include seven books devoted to linguistics and the theory of translation (Cognitive Linguistics and Poetics of Translation (1993), Język i obrazowanie. Wprowadzenie do językoznawstwa kognitywnego (1995), O przekładzie na przykładzie. Rozprawa tłumacza z Europą Normana Daviesa (1999), Tłumacząc się z tłumaczenia (2009), among others), as well as about 150 articles published in Poland and abroad. She has lectured as Visiting Professor at many European universities. She is also the author of an M.A. programme in Translation Studies, selected for the European Master’s in Translation Network of the European Commission.
