SHARING OUR BLESSINGS - September 4, 2011
Weekly $6,579.25 (incl.$277.25 loose money); Diocesan
Obligations $2,192 (incl. $100 loose money); Fuel $390; Weekly
budget $7,500.
Stewardship Note. Stewardship is not optional! “None of us lives
as his own master and none of us dies as his own master,” says St.
Paul. “While we live, we are responsible to the Lord, and when we
die, we die as His servants.”
Word of life. In her concern for all human beings, in all their
dimensions, the Church keeps watch over their fundamental rights
in frank dialogue with all who help to make them effective and not
to restrict them. She watches over the right to human life from its
beginning to its natural end. Because life is sacred and no one may
arbitrarily dispose of it. She supervises protection and aid to the
family, and supports financial social and juridical measures, so that
the man and woman who contract marriage and form a family may
have the necessary support to fulfill their mission of being a shrine
of love and life.
TWENTY-FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
September 11, 2011
Forgive your neighbor’s injustice; then when you pray, your
own sins will be forgiven.–Sirach 28:2
FORGIVENESS
Nearly ten years before, a son and father had parted ways when
the business they shared went bankrupt. The son blamed the father.
They did not speak to each other again.
Then the father became seriously ill. The mother called the son
and told him he had better come soon. The son walked sheepishly
into the hospital room. The father motioned his son to him and
whispered: “Did you ever think you could do anything that would
keep me from loving you?”
Resentment and anger are foul things, the first reading from
Sirach tells us. Remember the last things. Stop hating. Live by
the commandments. As St. Paul writes to the Romans, we are to
live for the Lord and die for the Lord.
For us Americans on the tenth anniversary of September 11,
2001, forgiveness still does not come easily. Yet Jesus’ parable in
today’s Gospel reminds us of God’s compassion. The immense sin
of humanity has been forgiven and stricken from the record. We
are to forgive others in the same way.
The second collection this weekend is for Higher Utility and
Energy Costs.
PARISH COUNCIL BALLOTS
Voting for new parish council members is continuing this
weekend. If you did not return your ballot as yet, please complete
a ballot (placed in the pews) and return your choices in the
collection basket this week. Thank you for your participation.
REMEMBERING SEPTEMBER 11, 2001
On Sunday, September 11th we will commemorate the tragic
event of Sept. 11, 2001. St. Joseph School students, faculty and
parents will celebrate Mass at our Basilica at 9:30am. Following
Mass we will gather in front of the school for a short program with
Senator Richard Moore as the main speaker and invited guests. We
will plant a memorial tree.
All school children, parents and parishioners are invited to attend
this patriotic event which will be permanently etched into the
history of our country.
CATHOLIC SCHOOL APPEAL
Every year the Diocese of Worcester conducts their Fall Appeal
for Catholic Schools. Parishes that operate schools retain the
collection for their own use. Parishes that do not have schools,
send the collections to the Diocesan General School Fund.
This year, our parish designated the September School Appeal
to cover the cost of the new reading series and handbooks for K
through grade 5 students. This purchase was necessary to update
the 10 year-old resources. This series of books, which was
strongly recommended by the principal and faculty, costs
$35,000 and the children already joyfully utilized them on the
first day of school. This new series will accelerate the learning
of the students and above all they are connected with the
interactive smart boards.
Some parishioners have already responded to this cause and I
am grateful for their generosity, but I expect that those who have
